This time capsule is an additional activity that Year 4 can complete as and when it suits them. It is not compulsory to complete this activity but it is there for anyone who feels like their child requires more work. It is an enjoyable activity that can be completed over a a number of weeks/months as we all live through Covid 19. We are living though history.

END of YEAR REPORTS
Parents - please collect your child's end of year report on Tuesday 30th June from the school office.
They will be available to collect between 10.00am and 1.00pm.
Please return any school textbooks/reading books when you come to collect the report. It would be appreciated if you could put the books into one of the manilla folders from the pupil packs or a plastic bag with your child's name on it.
We really need to get these books back as there are many hundreds of pounds worth of books, that we can't afford to lose.
Thank you.

Friday 26th June
So this is our last day of Year 4 on the website! We can't believe we have made it to the end of June without seeing you all since March! We have really missed you all! We hope you have enjoyed using our class page and the links we have provided to help with your learning. This page will remain here over the summer if you need to look back at anything in particular. Please try your best to complete any booklets, especially your summer revision booklets, over the next number of weeks. We hope you have engaged with the learning we have sent home as this is important in preparation for Year 5.
We will be giving you all one last phone call over the next few days but if we don't get to chat to you we will maybe see you on Tuesday when you are collecting your report as we will both be in school that day.
So here we go, last day of Year 4 school work!
Spelling, mental maths and reading - you know what to do by now.

Also BBC Bitesize was information on prepositions.
Prepositions tell us the position of something.
The last page in your Literacy revision booklet is on prepositions - underline the proposition in each sentence. Don't worry about rewriting the sentence as it's Friday!
E.g. The cat was sitting on the chair.

Wednesday already! You are nearly there Year 4. Well done to everyone who has been over on Purple Mash and completed the activities. We got some new training on Purple Mash today so we will maybe try a few new things on there before the end of term, so keep your eye peeled for the alerts.
You know the score by now - spellings = HFW, mental maths = game of your choice and reading.
Here is a link to a quiz on Libraries NI if you are interested QUIZ
Let's do numeracy first today, for a change, as I always write literacy up first.
NUMERACY
Let's focus on length, weight and capacity. Practical activities are great for all of these!
LENGTH - for measuring worksheets click here
Use a ruler or tape measure and have a go at measuring some things from around your house.
Here is a link to a game on length - Measuring in Centimetres
Check to make sure you have completed NHM Textbook Pages 89-92.
CAPACITY - for capacity worksheets click on the files below.
It is really useful to carry out practical capacity activities, such as filling containers and pouring into a measuring jug to find out how much they hold.
Here is a link to a game on capacity - Capacity Countdown
Check to make sure NHM Activity Book Page 33 is completed. Also Pg 95 and 96 in NHM Textbook

Speech marks go around the spoken words.
E.g. "Can we go to the shop and get ice-cream?" begged Jody.
Helen asked "When will it be lunch time?"
"Stop that at once!" demanded Mrs Vaughan, "You will get hurt!"
Remember that PUNCTUATION MARKS GO INSIDE THE SPEECH MARKS!

Tuesday morning so let's get moving - Just Dance waka-waka
You have had a couple of weeks with no tasks set on Purple Mash but log on again this week as there are new tasks on your alerts. We'll start a blog there too so you can tell us about what you are reading and let us know your favourite author.
Spellings - High Frequency Words. How many do you know?
Mental Maths - Mixed tables today Hit the Button or try any other mental maths game if you would prefer.
Reading - If you want a day off reading why not listen to this story instead, it's one of my favourite to read with my family - Shaggy Dog and the Terrible Itch
What are you all enjoying reading at home? Do you have a favourite author? The boys and girl in my house are enjoying Michael Morpurgo, David Walliams, JK Rowling and Jeff Kinney at the moment. Pop over to the blog on Purple Mash to let us know what you are reading.
Literacy - Complete anything that needs finished off in your pack.
Otherwise here is some revision for your summer homework:
13. Conjunctions
A conjunction is a joining word - because, but, so, if, yet, as , if etc. A conjunction is a word used to join small sentences together.
E.g. We have missed the bus so we will have to walk.
Complete the page 'Conjunctions' then have a go at 'Test 5'. Test 5 is revision of homophones, conjunctions, alphabetical order and prepositions.
Conjunctions 1
Conjunctions 2
Conjunctions 3
You can also have a go completing the worksheets below orally with an adult or print off the pdf files on conjunctions underneath the pictures.

Time
Telling the time is a really tricky, but important, skill to learn. You should be able to tell o'clock, half past, quarter to and quarter past times in analogue (words) and digital. Most of you will also be confident on the 'past' side of the clock for analogue and digital. If you are a real clever clogs you may also know the times on the 'to' side of the clock.
Here are some links to games to help you tell the time - Stop the Clock (Unfortunately you do need Flash for this game)
NHM textbook has some useful pages on time they include page 98-104. Some of these pages are about duration of time which is very tricky but we know some of you like a challenge!
Also you have pages on time in your NHM Activity Book (the one you write in) - Page 34-36 (again this are tricky but have a go if you wish).
Or you may have some of your time booklet (from your pack) to complete - especially those mixes times at the back of your booklet.

Monday 22nd June
We can't believe that we have made it to the final week of term. We never could have guessed that the 18th March would be the last day that all you guys would be in our class! We are extremely proud of all your hard work. We know home learning has been difficult and stressful at times for you and your family, but well done for all you have accomplished! You are all super stars!
So here we go - last week of work. If we had been in school we would have been doing filing, tidying up and plenty of fun art and craft activities, so this week you won't have as much work as previously. If you work hard, less than an hour should complete all your activities each day. Remember to take time to play outside, try some arts and crafts, do some baking or learn a new skill.

We use past tense to show things happened in the past e.g. Paul walked to school.
To make many verbs into past tense you just need to add 'ed' . Remember Old Uncle Ed
If a verb ends in 'e' e.g. skate - you take off the 'e' and add 'ed' = skated
We also have irregular past tense words. These words change completely!
E.g. eat = ate
swim = swam

Friday 19th June

Hi there Year 4 parents. We are looking for your help. Maddison's last pack and all his school work has been collected from the hall by mistake by someone else. Please check that you haven't accidentally lifted Maddison's work. If you discover you have, please return it to school and let the school office know. Many thanks.
Hard to believe it's Friday again and we are almost at the end of the term and the academic year.😱 I want you to remember that 'not all learning takes place in a classroom'. It's very important that you remember this and make good use of your time away from our classroom. Perhaps you are planting seeds or building things. Baking cakes and helping to organise dinner and keep your home clean and tidy. These are all important skills we need to learn as we grow up. Can you help your family write a shopping list and plan meals? Set the table and unload the dishwasher ? Can you chat about how much you have to spend on the weekly food shop and discuss and stick to a budget?
If you can't tie your shoe laces yet ? Now is the perfect opportunity to learn. So so many things you can learn that don't have to be written down 😍
and some that do 😜

When adding ing to a word ending with a consonant with a vowel before it e.g. wr a p - double the p and add ing
so
wrap becomes wrapping skip becomes skipping sit becomes sitting
If a word ends in e - take off the e and add ing
so
drive becomes driving dance becomes dancing smile becomes smiling
If a word ends in ee - just add ing
so
see becomes seeing flee becomes fleeing agree becomes agreeing
Some words you just add ing

8. Contractions
Contractions are when two words are joined together to make a shorter word - an apostrophe is used in place of the missing letters. It is really important that you put the apostrophe in PLACE OF THE MISSING LETTERS.
E.g. do not = the 'o' is removed so the apostrophe goes in place of the 'o' = don't
There are two sheets in your revision pack linked to contractions.

Today we are going to talk you through plurals and homophones
5. Plurals
Singular means one while plural means more than one.
Remember all the plural rules we have learnt.
1. Many nouns become plural simply by adding 's'. E.g. dog = dogs
2. If a noun ends in ch, sh, s, ss or x to become plural add 'es'. E.g. fox = foxes
3. If a noun ends in a vowel and then a 'y' (vowels = a,e,i,o,u) they become plural by just adding 's'. E.g. monkey = monkeys
4. If a noun ends in y with a consonant before it (not a vowel) they become plural by 'change the y to an i and add es'.
E.g. daisy = daisies
5. If a noun ends in f or fe they become plural by 'change the f or fe to v and adding es'. E.g. knife = knives
Try some of the plural page in your revision booklet.
Watch here to remind you of some of the rules: Plurals

Numeracy
If you have anything to finish from previous packs then please work on that. Otherwise let's do some revision on 'money notation' and 'money - change
Money notation
Counting real money at home is a great way to learn about money. Get you child to write down the amount they have counted. Remember 2 numbers come at the point e.g. £6.05
Giving change
In school we have learnt the 'shop keeper' method of giving change. That is counting up to the next multiple of ten and then counting up to 100p (£1)
For example: Change form £1 if you spend 33p
33p to 35p = 2p
35p to 40p = 5p
40p to 50p = 10p
50p to £1 = 50p
So change is 2p+5p+10p+50p = 67p
A brilliant way to learn about money is to play money games. Here are links to a few:
Money Games:
Top Shop - counting money and giving change
Coins Game - counting money
The Change Game - Giving change
Coin Cruncher
You will find a selection of other games relating to money on Top Marks.

Monday 15th June
Good morning Year 4! Today is the day to pick up your new pack, your final pack of Year 4! We can't quite believe we are down to the final 2 weeks of Year 4 work. You have worked so hard and we are extremely proud of all you! You have been used to our weekly timetable but you will see this pack is slightly different. These last two weeks are for finishing off and reinforcement.
Spellings
Most of you will have completed your weekly spelling lists (if not, don't panic, continue to work through them until they are completed). We would like you to work on spelling the 1st 500 high frequency words. All of you are in different places with this, some on the first hundred, some the second hundred and so on, so just work on at these. It would be extremely beneficial to be able to spell the first 200 HFW in preparation for Year 5. It is useful to get an adult to call out approximately 25 spellings at a time - see which ones you get correct, then work on the ones you didn't. Write out the spellings you need to work on twice, or complete a spelling activity from the sheets we provided you with in another pack.

Reading
Reading is one of the most important, and enjoyable, things you can do at home! Please try you best to read daily or a minimum of ten minutes four times a week. Remember you can download ebooks and audiobooks from Libraries NI using your library card number which you got on the front of your first pack. You will see we have provided you with a Summer Readathlon sheet in your pack. This is to encourage you to read throughout the summer. Remember to record your books on the sheet and return to us in September for a certificate and small prize. Normally the library will provide a reading challenge over the summer, but we are unsure if this will be happening this year due to the situation we find ourselves in.
If you completed Lexia in school then you will have your log in details. If for any reason you are having problems with accessing Lexia or have misplaced your log in details please contact the school office immediately. NOT ALL CHILDREN HAVE LEXIA ACCOUNTS SO IF YOUR CHILD DOESN'T, DON'T PANIC!
It has been great to see how well some Year 4 are doing on Lexia! A huge well done to you! Please make sure you continue with Lexia over the next two weeks and over the summer months, in preparation for Year 5.

Mental Maths
All groups: You have all the links to the different mental maths games at the top of this page. Spend time working on multiplication tables, division facts, making 100 or addition and subtraction within 100.
Group 1: You have learnt 2,3,4,5,6,8,9 and 10 times tables!! Wow!!! That's fantastic! If you are confident, and only if you are confident, with all these facts you may wish to do the 7 times tables this week. These are the tricky ones, but you will find the only fact you need to learn is 7X7 because you have learnt the rest while learning other tables! Confused? Well don't be. You see you know 7X3 = 21 so 3X7 = 21 or 7X9 = 63 so 9X7=63 - easy!!!
7x7=49
Here is the 7 times table song
Have a go at counting backwards and forwards in sevens. Do it with a partner. You say one number, they say the next. Try making groups of seven. Then as the week progresses have a go at the games such as Hit the Button, Eggs on Legs, Multiple Wipeout etc. Links at the top of the page.
Group 2+3: Make sure you are confident and have QUICK recall of 2,5 and 10 times tables.

You will see that we have provided you with Literacy: Year 4 Key Concepts in your pack. This is summer homework - revise over all the concepts in this booklet. If you are up to date with you packs, over the next two weeks we will take you through this booklet and you can start the revision book linked to these concepts (with a bee on it).
1. Capital letters add full stops
You need to remember when to use capital letters. The first page in your revision booklet (one with a bee on it) has two capital letters and full stop activities. Your child can complete this on the page, orally or write it out.
Be careful with the second activity. You have to spilt the one longer sentence into two shorter sentences, therefore using two full stops.
E.g. 1. yesterday ross and Peter were playing football they won the game
Yesterday Ross and Peter were playing football. They won the game.
Check out this video to remind you when you use CAPITAL LETTERS.

Numeracy
Today make sure you have completed you area and function machine booklets.
If you have you will find worksheets here to revise adding and subtracting mentally.
Remember the strategies we have learnt for adding within 100.
PARTITIONING: Split into tens and units
Partition one number
34 + 42 =
34 + 40 + 2 =76
Partition both numbers
34+42
30 + 40 = 70. 4+2. = 6. so 70+6 = 76
ROUNDING AND ADJUSTING
29+35 =
29 is close to 30 so 30 +35 = 65 then minus 1 = 64
USING PRIOR KNOWLEDGE
36 +32 = We know 6+2 = 8 so 36 + 32 = 68
USE DOUBLES or NEAR DOUBLES
Remember the strategies we have learnt for subtracting within 100
Keep the first number intact, then partition the number you are taking away - take away the tens, then take away the units.
E.g. 87 - 43 =
87 - 40 = 47 then -3 = 44
Try no bridging and bridging with addition. For subtraction just do no bridging. If you fancy a challenge then try bridging with subtraction, but be careful!
E.g. 64 - 36 =
64 - 30 = 34
34 - 6 = 28 (we go back into the twenties here!)

It's FRIDAY!!! Turn your sound up and click here 😎
Good morning year 4, last day of schoolwork before the weekend and a well deserved rest for you all ( and mummies and daddies too!)
Spelling test
Ask an adult or older sibling to call out any 10 of this week's spellings. If you have been keeping up with your spellings since lockdown then this should be week 34 and your last list. If you're a little behind , just keep working through your list, one sound a week.
Next week we want you to concentrate on reading and spelling the first 500 words. Don't panic! We don't want them all done at once. Most of you can already read and spell the first hundred. When you know these, move onto the second hundred and so forth. You can read through all 500 words but please do remember to go back through them in order and learn to spell them. Being able to spell these words accurately will be a huge advantage to you, as you move on to year 5 next year.
Dictation
The corresponding dictation sentences for your spellings are attached to your sheet. Do as many of these as you wish. You could be the teacher and mark these yourself.
Mental maths
All groups - choose your favourite games from this week and try to improve your score. Scroll down for links.

If you missed yesterday's video and pp the links are here video pp
Today we are going to calculate the area of some rectangles and squares by measuring each side. Before you begin you will need a cm ruler. Yesterday, you were calculating the area of rectangles and squares by multiplying the length by the width. However, the numbers were written on the shape to make it a little easier for you. Today I want you to carry out the same calculation but this time you have to use your ruler to measure the length of each side for yourself first.
In the first example I measured the length and width as 6cm and 3 cm. To calculate the area we multiply the length by the width
area = length x width
so in this example
area = 6 x 3 = 18cm 2 ( see photo 2 below)
The next example I've done for you is in photo 3 . It looks like a square so we can assume all the sides are equal ( always double check this just in case)
remember area = length x width
so in this example
area = 4 x 4 = 16cm 2 ( see photo 3 below)

Complete pages 12- 14.
Note to parents When drawing out exact lines it can be difficult to get them perfect as the photocopier can alter the measurements ever so slightly. If the length of one side is almost 4cm or just slightly more than 4 , please use the nearest whole number. So 3 cm 8 mm becomes 4 for ease of multiplication as does 4 cm 2 mm. I hope this makes sense 🙏
If you enjoyed doing your maths today and would like to try some trickier questions, have a look at the next and last 2 pages your booklet. These are an introduction to compound shapes and (very much) an extension activity . They are not compulsory but we have some fabulous little mathematicians in year 4 who may enjoy the challenge. The notes at the top of each page explain exactly what you have to do.
Literacy
We're feeling very generous today so we're not going to set anymore work ( I know you already know this as it says so on your timetable). Take today to finish off anything you didn't get completely finished( or started 😱 ) during the week or spend some time curled up on a comfy chair reading a book .
Books Glorious Books
From J.K. Rowling
"I had the idea for The Ickabog a long time ago and read it to my two younger children chapter by chapter each night while I was working on it. However, when the time came to publish it, I decided to put out a book for adults instead, which is how The Ickabog ended up in the attic. I became busy with other things, and even though I loved the story, over the years I came to think of it as something that was just for my own children. Then this lockdown happened..........."
click here to read The Ickabog.
We've missed a couple (or 27) of chapters but I'm sure it wouldn't take you too long to catch up. If it's a little tricky for you to read by yourself , perhaps you could ask a parent or older sibling to read it to/with you.
Art Competition
Calling all budding artists! J.K. Rowling is inviting you to help illustrate The Ickabog for her. Every day when chapters of the story are uploaded, she will be making suggestions for what you might like to draw or paint to illustrate the story as it goes along. You should let your imagination run wild!
Enter here
We have some very talented artists in year 4 so if you would like to see your artwork in a book by a very famous author , then this is your chance.
PS if you do get published I'm going to require a signed copy of your drawing. ( make that 2, one each!)
Have a lovely weekend everyone! If you're out and about during the weekend, please take care on the roads and when crossing the streets. Cars don't have to be going very fast to really injure you.

NUMERACY: All Groups
Today we are going to move on from counting squares to calculate area, to using the length of the sides of each shape to calculate its area. To do this we multiply the length by the width. To calculate the area of a square or a rectangle watch this video
This is an excellent interactive powerpoint which could be completed first with the grids and then without the grids. Some of you will be able to skip the grid section and move straight to multiplying the sides.

Today's pages are 9-11.
Page 9 you can count the squares. Page 10 and 11 you should use the given measurements of each shape to calculate its area. On page 11 you have a table to complete at the top of the page.

Staying Safe on our Roads
It's important to notice whilst there has been less traffic on our roads (especially early on in the lockdown), many more people have been out walking, running and cycling. Sadly, during this time, collisions on our roads have still been occurring with some resulting in serious injuries and fatalities. This is likely to continue as lockdown further relaxes and we enter the summer months when children and young people have more time to be out and about.
With this in mind, I would like to share the following information on Pedestrian Safety from the Department for Infrastructure ‘Safe and Accessible Travel’ .
https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/articles/road-safety-seven-11-year-olds
Please talk to your child/children about and practise the following safe pedestrian habits:
The Green Cross Code – children are generally considered to be ready to judge speed and distance of traffic from the age of eight years. Knowing and being able to use the Green Cross Code is an essential life skill for all children:
o First find a safe place to cross;
o Stop with your toes behind the kerb (or grass verge on a country road);
o Look and listen in all directions for any traffic;
o If any traffic is coming, let it pass;
o When the road is clear, walk straight across the road;
o Keep looking and listening for traffic as you cross.
· Walking on the footpath (on the inside of the footpath with the adult closest to the roadside);
If practical, walk the normal route to/from school and decide upon the safest places to cross the road. Then, when school resumes, use this route each time you walk your child to/from school (or if your child walks without a parent then encourage them to use the same crossing points if at all possible). Focus on:
· Use of any pedestrian crossings in place (including where the Crossing Patrol normally stands);
· Good sight lines in any direction that traffic may come from;
· Any potential dangers along the route (e.g. cars reversing out of driveways, road works)
For further information on pedestrian safety: https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/articles/be-safe-pedestrian
To view the road safety calendars issued to schools: https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/articles/road-safety-teaching-aid-calendars
Enjoy going for walks with your child and remember to use the GREEN CROSS CODE

NUMERACY: All Groups
This week we will be learning about area. So what is AREA? Area is the amount of shape an object takes up.
Please watch these videos and powerpoint before you begin.
INTRODUCTION TO AREA BY COUNTING SQUARES
AREA WITH FULL AND HALF SQUARES
AREA POWERPOINT from Twinkl
If you require additional area work you will find some more on Twinkl by clicking here.
Today we would like you to complete the first 3 pages in your FINDING THE AREA booklet.
Page 1 - to work out the area you need to count the squares. It is useful to make a mark in each square as you count it so you don't forget one or count one twice.
Page 2+3 - On these pages the unit cm2 is introduced. This is the unit we often use for measuring area. Again you need to count the squares to work out the area.

Good morning year 4. Friday again ! I can imagine you are all missing your friends and family terribly ( maybe even your teachers a little bit) so you may want to send them a virtual hug to let them know you miss them and are thinking about them.
I needed to buy a new printer at the start of lockdown for L for schoolwork so when they sent me this in an email I thought of you all .
Send a virtual hug postcards

, , This one is from us both to you all. We are missing you all so much and wish we could be back in school to finish the school year properly with you. We've been writing reports the last few days and remembering all the lovely times we have experienced with you all , the laughter , all the wonderful learning, your amazing reading ( D reading orthodontist- proud teacher moment) ) and the sheer look of joy on your little faces when something just "clicked". How could we forget A's wonderful dabbing when he got a great result on the white board or D's impromptu singing of "Today"? which still makes me giggle. Anyway.... last day of the week and there's not too much to do today.
Spelling test
Ask an adult or older sibling to call out any 10 of this week's spellings.
Dictation
The corresponding dictation sentences for your spellings are attached to your sheet. Do as many of these as you wish.
Mental maths
All groups - choose your favourite games from this week and try to improve your score.
Numeracy
Next two pages in your function machines booklet. Scroll down for links and photographs to help .
Can you make your own rule for each function machine? You could do an example and ask a parent or sibling to complete them . Of course then you will have to mark them so don't think you won't have to work out the answer. You can stick with adding and subtraction or you may want to try to write some using multiplication and dividing rules. Can you make them trickier by giving the output so your 'student ' has to complete the input? Whichever you decide to use , you get to be the teacher today. Perhaps you could email them to us and we can have a go too .
Literacy
Use yesterday's planning sheet to write a letter to an adult asking for a pet of your choosing.
An informal letter looks like this, can you ignore the year written on a line by itself and write it all together.

Use the blank letter template provided to write your letter. Use the pictures below to help you with the layout. Remember you are using the information in your planning sheet to write a letter to an adult asking for a pet( persuasive text) so it's not a thank you letter. Ps You can write that when you get a pet!😃😇
When you have completed your writing please read over it to check it makes sense and you have included all the correct grammar, punctuation and spelling. If you need to rewrite it you can download another copy of the letter template here or you can just use a new page. Perhaps you have proper writing paper at home which you could use?

Good morning year 4. We hope you have all had a good week so far and been enjoying the lovely weather. It has been lovely to speak to you all over the last few days and hear what you've all been getting up to. If we haven't managed to speak to you yet, we will have left a message if possible and we promise to try again today and tomorrow.
Note for parents: I was very kindly sent a link to download the answers to the Prim- ed daily numeracy and daily literacy booklets by a teacher friend earlier today. I thought they would be appreciated by some of you. We don't have these in school or we would have included them before now.

Group 3 - You are going to have a go at halving numbers today. Your game is Topmarks Halves. Click on multiples of 10 . Up to 100. Try to do the first one in the multiples of 5 too.
NUMERACY
Let's continue to work on FUNCTION MACHINES today. There are links further down the page if you haven't already watched the clips.
Function Machine Booklet
Today we will look at pages 7 and 8 , subtracting and adding within 100.
REMEMBER if its a two digit number add or take away the TENS then the UNITS e.g. +12 = +10 then +2
or -25 = -20 then - 5.
Group 3: If you need help please use your hundred square. If you don't have one you will get one here.
The photographs below explain the first one on each page to you

Literacy
Group 1 and 2- The independent writing task you begin today is for today and tomorrow . Today I'd like you to read through the example of a persuasive text in your folder.
Remember A persuasive text is a text which argues a point of view to convince the reader to agree with the author. You will notice that a persuasive passage or letter will consist of three main parts and is organised into paragraphs to make it easier to read.
1. An introduction To explain the main point you want to make/ your point of view
2. Arguments State your point of view and reasons for each argument
3. Conclusion Summarise your arguments and repeat your point of view
Tomorrow you are going to write a letter to an adult asking for a pet so today I'd let you to complete the planning sheet in preparation. Before you begin you will need to decide what kind of pet you would like to ask for . It's probably a good idea to ask for one which you know a little about, as it will make your argument more realistic. e.g. I know that O would ask for a dog( if he didn't already have one) as he loves to play outside and would enjoy taking a dog for long walks on our farm. L would ask for snake or a horse as she loves to ride ( horses not snakes 😂)
Once you have chosen which animal you are going to ask for, you're ready to begin completing your planning sheet .
Note: persuasive texts are always written in the present tense.
Introduction Mention your chosen animal and give 3 arguments why you should be allowed to get one as a pet.
Argument 1 Include your first argument in this box giving two reasons why you would like one.
Argument 2 Include your second argument in this box giving two reasons to support your request.
Argument 3 This is where you will include your third and final argument with statements to support your point of view
Conclusion Summarise your arguments again and restate your point of view . (Summarise means to write something in a shorten form)
When you have completed your planning sheet, can you read over what you've written to check it makes sense. I will give you some more information about writing a letter tomorrow and remind you how to set it out.
Heres a video of some animals which DON'T make good pets. Can you guess what number 1 might be before you watch it? here
Group 3 - Yesterday you started Unit 16: Bart the Shark from your comprehension skills textbook. Today I'd like you to complete the last section called " Now Try These".
To answer question 3 can you discuss what they might be saying with a sibling or a parent? Perhaps they're having a conversation about what happened when the shark appeared at the end of the story. Perhaps they're just really happy to see each other again. Remember to use speech bubbles to show what they say. Like these :

Let's continue to work on FUNCTION MACHINES today. There are links further down the page if you haven't already watched the clips.
FUNCTION MACHINE booklet
Today let's look Page 5 and 6 pages. Again these are either adding or subtracting function machines. The numbers are getting harder though as we are adding and subtracting within 100.
REMEMBER if its a two digit number add or take away the TENS then the UNITS e.g. +12 = +10 then +2
or -25 = -20 then - 5.
Group 3: If you need help please use your hundred square. If you don't have one you will get one here.
MAKE SURE YOU ARE ACCURATE WITH YOUR ADDING AND SUBTRACTING.
Group 1: You may wish to have a go trying the function machines that have the missing INPUT. These are REVERSE OPERATION function machines. This means you have to do the opposite FUNCTION. So if the rule is add then you have to take away or if the rule is multiply you must divide and vice versa.
So to work out the first one you need to think ___ + 10 = 20 so you can reverse the function from adding to take away:
20 - 10 = 10 therefore the INPUT is 10
Look at the last one on the page ___ divide by 4 = 12. Well to get the answer you need to reverse the FUNCTION so instead of dividing you need to multiply. So 12 X 4 = 48 so the answer is 48.
I hope that makes sense to you Year 4. You do not need to complete this section. It is an extension activity.

Group 1+2 Today we will be thinking about ADVERBS again.
It would be really useful to watch these before starting if you haven't already done so.
Adverbs 1
Adverbs 2
BBC Bitesize - this is useful to play games etc.
Adverbs describe verbs and often end in 'ly' which can make them easier to spot in a sentence.
You have an adverb worksheet in your pack to complete today so have a go at that.
GROUP 3: You will be working on your comprehension today: Unit 16 - Bart the Shark. Just complete the 'Get started' section and 'Try these' section. The last section is for tomorrow.
An ADVERB is a word that gives more meaning to a VERB by adding details about how, when or where something happened.
Below are some adverb games you may wish to print and play.
Also you will find online games linking to verbs on TopMarks.

Tuesday 2nd June
Good morning Year 4. We hope you all got your new packs yesterday. The weather has been fantastic so we know it is difficult to think about doing work but try to do some each day so that you don't fall behind. It is particularly important to keep reading and learning your number facts and tables. Why not take a book outside and enjoy it in the nice weather. Practice your multiplication tables by counting in 8s or 3s (whatever you are learning) while jumping on the trampoline. There are lots of ideas to keep active and keep learning.
Here is a little Body Boogie to get you moving this morning before starting school work! Enjoy!
MENTAL MATHS
Group 1 - Please revise over all your tables so far if you need more work on these.
If you are happy and confident with these then try the 8 times tables this week.
Today have a go at counting forwards and backwards in 8's again. It may also be useful to listen to 8X Tables song again. If you are confident with these have a go at our 8 times table game which is Hit the Button today
Group 2 - Please revise over 2, 5 and 10 times tables (and 4 for some of you).
If you are happy and confident with these then try the 3 times tables this week.

NUMERACY
This week we will for focusing for all groups on FUNCTION MACHINES. Watch the video if you didn't yesterday.
Remember a function machine is simply a number goes in (INPUT) - something happens the number - add, subtract, multiple or divide (the FUNCTION or RULE) - and then a number comes out (OUTPUT).
E.g. Input Function Output
5 +4 9
In your pack you will all have a FUNCTION MACHINE booklet.
Today let's look Page 3 and 4 pages. Unfortunately the print quality of these two pages was very poor (sorry!) Therefore we have put a photo of them below.
Page 3: You will see they are called 'In-Out machines' this is just another name for FUNCTION MACHINES. The function this time is at the bottom of each set and is called the RULE. In question 1 you will see the rule is add 7 so you must add seven to each INPUT (on the left) to get the OUTPUT (on the right). The second one has the RULE subtract 2 and so on
Page 4: Input/Output Tables again another name for FUNCTION MACHINES. This time the FUNCTION or RULE is in the middle. All the tables on the left have an addition rule while the tables on the right have a subtraction rule.
MAKE SURE YOU ARE ACCURATE WITH YOUR ADDING AND SUBTRACTING.
Group 1: You may want to try the other two step function machines at the back of your booklet - CHALLENGE pages.
Make sure you do the first function first and then the second one.
Here are the answers from yesterday if you wish to mark your own.

Get an adult or sibling to say one number and you say the next (counting in 8's) It would be useful to listen to our Youtube song first (we know you love these little songs) 8X Tables

Group 2 - Please revise over 2, 5 and 10 times tables (and 4 for some of you). If you are happy and confident with these then try the 3 times tables this week. Today have a go at counting forwards and backwards in 3's. Write down the numbers in order. Get an adult or sibling to say one number and you say the next (counting in 3's) It would be useful to listen to our Youtube song first (we know you love these little songs) 3X Tables
Group 3 - You are going to be thinking about ordering numbers. So have a go at Primary Games: Eggs to Order. Click here to go straight to the game.
NUMERACY
This week we will for focusing for all groups on FUNCTION MACHINES. Watch the video.
A function machine is simply a number goes in (INPUT) - something happens the number - add, subtract, multiple or divide (the FUNCTION or RULE) - and then a number comes out (OUTPUT).
E.g. Input Function Output
5 +4 9
In your pack you will all have a FUNCTION MACHINE booklet.
Today let's look at the first 2 pages.
The first page focuses on addition within 20.
If you look at the first robot you will see its FUNCTION (or rule) is +4. That means you must add 4 to all the input numbers to get the output so 5 + 4 = 9
7 + 4 =
9 + 4 = and so on.
Remember when adding 12 you add 10 then add 2 and the same for adding 13 - add 10 then add 3.
To add 9 easily - add 10 and take away 1.
The numbers on the left of the robots are the INPUT (the number going in). The numbers on the right of the robot are the OUTPUT (the numbers coming out after the function has been applied).
The second page is all about subtraction within 20 so the FUNCTIONS are all take away. Again the INPUT is to the left and the OUTPUT (after the function is applied) is on the RIGHT.
I'll post answers on this page tomorrow.
Remember to take away 9 - take away 10 and add 1. To take away 12 - take away 10 then take away another 2.
Group 1: If you have found that extremely simple and want more of a challenge there are CHALLENGE pages are the back of your booklet. You may want to try the two step function machines. Make sure you do the first function first and then the second one.
CHALLENGE page:
1) INPUT FUNCTION 1 FUNCTION 2 OUTPUT
5 +4 X2
so 5+4 is 9 9 times 2 is 18 so 18 is the OUTPUT

Friday 29th May
Friday morning again which means one thing. Friday Spelling test and the weekend 😍 BUT before we start some work let's have a little song "Wake up"
The lyrics are here and the dance moves are here. Get mum and dad to join in too.
This one is just because I love it and it makes me smile Just Sing. Feel free to sing your heart out and don't forget your funky dance moves.
Ask an adult or older sibling to call out any 10 of this week's spellings. Don't worry if you've missed a week. Just move through them as you can.
The corresponding dictation sentences for your spellings are attached to your sheet. Do as many of these as you wish. Even one is better than none at all.
Remember to read it back to yourself to check it makes sense. You could have a go at marking these yourself using the sheets provided. Give yourself a big star if you get them all correct and a pat on the back for trying your best if you didn't.

More division by 3 and 10 for groups 1 and 2 today.
(I have just cut and pasted yesterday's link because they are the same. However, I will add some new links to worksheets and additional activities below the main paragraph. These are additional to your mm activities and therefore optional)
Introduction to division is here if you haven't already watched it.
Group 1 - you are continuing with dividing by 3 today . Choose hit the question today instead of the answer.
Group 2 - you are continuing with dividing by 10. Choose hit the question today instead of hit the answer.
Group 3 - your game is Top Shop Game: Giving Change again. Make sure to go to mixed coins. Start at 'up to 20p' then work up the levels. Who can give change from £1? Remember £1 is 100p.
When you've finished can you get some real money and practise with a parent or sibling? Make sure to wash your hands well afterwards as money can be very dirty. Your parents may have told you that the shops are all encouraging everyone to use contactless cards to pay for their shopping because of how many germs money can carry.
Optional / useful for reinforcement of this weeks theme
Dividing by 3 game sheet, match the number name to the question ( scroll down to divide by 3), various online games and worksheets
Division by 10 game sheet, poster, multiplying and dividing by 10 worksheet
Giving change these are a range of worksheets which would help to consolidate this week's learning.

Time - all children to work on their time booklet. The new one we'd like you to introduce today is 25 minutes to the hour
Explain that we count back in 5's from the 12 ( it's to the hour on the left side of the clock), so 5,10,15,20,25 and that takes us to the 7. Probably best not to mention that '25 minutes to' is the 7 too much, as we want them to think of the numbers on the clock face as hours not minutes. At this stage just focus on repetition so they get used to the placement of the hands. Complete both pages in your booklet.
Blank clock sheets are available here to download.
Parents :If you're still with me then you might appreciate this
Please note : Time is an incredibly difficult concept for some children and if your child is struggling please do not panic. In order to reach a level 2 at the end of year 4 ( where we want them to be) they should know the 4 main times of the clock in both analogue and digital format. These are o'clock/ :00, half past /:30, quarter past /:15 and quarter to /:45 Quarter to is the tricky one for a lot of children.
If they need to, take the time to reinforce and recap these before moving on. Your child isn't behind if that's the case

Well done on all your hard work with vertical subtraction. Here is another link to help show exactly what is happening when regrouping happens for hundreds and tens! TRICKY VERTICAL SUBTRACTION EXPLAINED. You do not have to do these pages yet as we will be coming back to these trickier sums in a couple of weeks but if you are very keen to do more this should allow you to get started.
Also if you didn’t watch the video yesterday make sure you have a watch it today starring Mrs Vaughan! - You may have to scroll down and click on the link for this in Thursday as it doesn't seem to be working here - sorry. VERTICAL SUBTRACTION VIDEO
We will be revisiting vertical subtraction and addition in two weeks time so keep your booklets and there will be more videos of us talking you through the progress. Hopefully by now you will be confident with subtraction with no regrouping and subtraction regrouping the tens. Grouping hundreds will be our next challenge!

Group 1 - you are completing your ice-cream booklet today. Page 65-67
Group 2 - you have a sheet called ' Improve your writing" . Use the picture and the prepositions you have learnt so far to make the sentences more interesting.
Remember : a preposition is a word that tells you the position of one thing in relation to another.
e.g.Instead of ' I can see a dustbin' you can use your prepositions to tell me exactly where it is
" The dustbin is behind the wall"
There are only 6 more to do so it shouldn't take too long.
Group 3 - I've just realised that I put today's literacy up yesterday. No you can't have a day off , I hear you ask. I'd like you to do the writing I should have put up yesterday instead.
Today you're going to have a go at writing a shape poem . These are some of my favourites:

Looking at the units column first we are now saying to ourselves " more on the floor , go next door and get ten more"
You exchange one ten for 10 units so now you have 10units, 10 units take away 4 units = 6 units. Now you move to the tens column. 4 tens take away 3 tens = 1 ten. Your answer has 1 in the tens column and 6 in the units column = 16
Group 3 - you are continuing with your addition booklet. Aim to complete at least two pages a day.

Group 1 - complete page 62-64 of your ice cream booklet. You can email photos to the school email address.
Group 2 - you are going to revise the sounds a 'soft c' and a 'soft g' make. We talk about these a lot in year 4 so it isn't a completely new concept.
A quick recap of the rules are below (You have a phonics sheet with this on it too)
Soft 'c'
Listen to the sound the letter c makes in the following sentence
Mice were recently seen eating celery in the cellar
You will notice that every c makes the sound we normally associate with the letter s. The rule is : c followed by i,e,or y says: 's'. The words in the sentence above are all c followed by e words.
Here are some where the c is followed by i : circus acid cider civil decimal Can you read them all?
and when the c is followed by y: cycle cygnet Cyril cynical This are trickier but there aren't as many of them . Remember to use our vowel, consonant, split approach.
Now read the words on your sheet and write the ones with a c as in kite in one column and c as in ice in another.
Can you remember which letters change the sound of c?
Soft 'g'
Listen to the sound the letter g makes in the following sentence
Gerald went to Germany to see the magic gypsy.
You will notice that every g makes the sound we normally associate with the letter j. The rule is : g followed by i,e,or y says: 'j'. The same letters as the soft c.
Note: there are a few exceptions to this rule , the most common ones being girl and give
Can you read these words ? gent gem digger Gemma gorilla finger You will have noticed that those with an er after the g don't make a soft g sound.
Group 3 - your plurals sheet is in your pack for today. Please read over the soft g and soft c rules above with an adult too.

So today we would like you to try something a little different and have a go at our 'Speed Maths'. We hope you remember doing this in school. If you scroll down you will see a video for 'Speed Maths' so please join in with me!
Can't quite believe we are on Week 8 of home learning! We so miss seeing all your faces each day in class which is why we love seeing all your comments over on our blogs on Purple Mash and the photographs you send in.
MENTAL MATHS
Group 1 and 2
This week we will be focusing on division again. Remember to divide you must share evenly. Use practical materials from around your house to practically divide. Try sharing objects like marbles/cars/dolls evenly between 10 people (Group 2) or 3 people (Group 1).
For example: 40 marbles shared between 10 people means each person will get 4 marbles each. We can say 40 divided by 10 equals 4.
:21 Lego bricks shared between 3 people means each person will get 7 Lego bricks each. We can say 21 divided by 3 equals 7.
See if you can spot the link between multiplication and division facts!
If you know your multiplication facts your division facts will be easy.
In your pack there is a booklet on the multiplication/division facts:
Group 1. - This week focus on 3 X table booklet
Group 2 - This week focus on 10 X table booklet
After you complete your daily maths each morning spend 5-10 minutes completing a page or two of these booklets. Work through them at your own pace. We will work on a booklet for a week but don't worry if it isn't completed you can revisit these booklets at any time.

PURPLE MASH PENGUINS!
Oh Year 4 this has really brightened up my morning! I loved looking at your pictures of penguins. I am making a new blog about penguins over on 'sharing' on 'Purple Mash' so why not find out something interesting about penguins and pop a comment up so everyone can see. Well done to all our Year 4 artists! Can you spot your penguin? I can't wait to see the rest! No panic on these Year 4 as I think we left you two weeks to complete this activity.

An interactive activity to revise minutes past and to the hour is here
If you don't already have a watch perhaps you could ask for one for your next birthday or save up your pocket money. Devices tend to have digital clocks ( as do cookers and cars) but you need to know how to read an analogue clock too. This is especially useful when you learn about duration of time and times later /earlier than as you can visually divide the clock face into sections.
If you look at the clock face below its relatively easy to tell the time 1/2 later because you look at the number directly across from the 10, making the time in 1/2 hour '20 minutes past 2'

Today's lesson is on speech marks ( they are sometimes called inverted commas)
Speech marks show us when someone is speaking. The words they say are inside the speech marks.
The speech bubble in the picture below shows you that Lucy is saying that she loves her book. To write this sentence using speech marks we use these " ". The computer makes them look like little dashes but when you're writing them you want them to look like this >>>>
We call them 66 and 99 s in school
The 66 goes before the first word and the 99 goes after the last word.
Her speech bubble becomes
" I love this book," said Lucy.
Can you work out where the speech marks should go in the sentences below?
When you do these orally, have a go at today's sheet. You can write on the sheet !

The next two weeks will will be focusing on division. Remember to divide you must share evenly. Use practical materials from around your house to practically divide. Try sharing objects like marbles/cars/dolls evenly between 2 people (Group 2) or 4 people (Group 1).
For example: 10 marbles shared between 2 people means each person will get 5 marbles each. We can say 10 divided by 2 equals 5.
16 Lego bricks shared between 4 people means each person will get 4 Lego bricks each. We can say 16 divided by 4 equals 4.
See if you can spot the link between multiplication and division facts! Group 2 look out for the link between dividing by 2 and halving. Group 1 dividing by 4 is like halving and then halving again!
You will also receive in your pack a booklet on the multiplication/division facts we are working on.
Group 1. - This week focus on 4 X table booklet
Group 2 - This week focus on 2 X table booklet
After you complete your daily maths each morning spend 5-10 minutes completing a page or two of these booklets. Work through them at your own pace. We will work on a booklet for a week but don't worry if it isn't completed you can revisit these booklets at any time. The booklet look like this:

Friday 15th May
It's Friday! Yippee!
Spellings
After today you'll have two days off to have a rest and enjoy the 'hopefully' good weather .
Friday test day but it's up to your family how you want to do this. Get an adult (or if you have a sibling you could call these out for each other) to choose 10 of the week's spellings . In school I usually choose the ones which I think you are most likely to use in your writing.
Dictation
There are sentences provided which use this week's spellings and some words from previous weeks. Get an adult to read these to you and you write them down. Remember to use the correct punctuation. Please read over your sentence to check it makes sense , missing words can be inserted using an upside down v. This is the beginning of you learning how to edit your writing. You will benefit hugely from being able to spot your own mistakes before handing work in to be marked.
Mental maths
Group 1 and 2 : choose any fraction games you enjoyed this week and see if you can improve your scores. I still can't access fraction flags.
Group 3 : Rocket rounding Choose the 'up to 99 to nearest 10 'option with a number line . Then try it without a number line. You may want to try the next level too.
Numeracy
Group 1 : NHM Word problems Page 14.
You may find that a little sketch will help you to answer these. For the first one you could draw a stick man called Gary and write 53 beside him. Emma scores 10 more runs that Gary so you know that her score will be higher than his . Draw a stick lady and write 53 + 10. The final part is to add your numbers together to work out how many runs Emma scored.
Remember :When you read more than you add or multiply, when you read less than you either subtract or divide.
Page 15 is an extension activity so only do this if you feel able . To work out the fraction you need to divide e.g. one third of 30 is 30 divided by 3. One quarter of 8 is 8 divided by 4 and so on. To double a number you multiply by two.
Group 2 : Test 3 :Money When adding coins, remember to add the coins with the highest value first
e.g. 10p + 2p + 20p Think of the 20p first then add the 10p and lastly add the 2p so your sum now looks like this 20p + 10p +2p = 32p
You can try to do this in your head or write them out in the new order if you wish. Games
Test 4: 2 D shapes . Look at the links to recap the main 2 d shapes we need to know in year 4.
Do you remember how to recall the names?
A hexagon has six sides ( there's an x in both six and hexagon) , we also talked about hexbugs and how all bugs have 6 legs.
An octagon has 8 sides and an octopus has 8 tentacles.
A quad has four wheels and a quadrilateral is any shape with 4 sides. So a square and a rectangle are also quadrilaterals.
A regular pentagon reminds me of a house and its roof and the top floor in an appartment is a penthouse. Any shape which has 5 sides is also a pentagon but we call them irregular pentagons. There are three irregular shapes in the picture in your book. Can you spot them? They don't look like the regular shapes which is why we describe them as irregular.

Literacy
Group 1 and 2 : Today's literacy is very straightforward. Please complete the Habitat Fact File sheet in your folder. We would love you to email a picture of it if you have time .
Group 3 : Can you please focus on the Lexia sheets in your folder today and remember to try to get onto Lexia on at least three separate occasions throughout the week. Mrs Burns is keeping us updated on all your efforts. If you're not getting on very often could you please try to do it more often in the coming days and weeks?

Wednesday 13th May
It's Wednesday! That means we are half way through the week again. We hope you learnt lots of new and interesting facts about polar bears yesterday. Why not share some of these facts on our blog on Purple Mash.
MENTAL MATHS
Group 1+2 : Continued focus on fractions. TopMarks (this game does require Flash. If you do not have Flash please choose another fraction game from TopMarks).
Group 3: Focus today is on subtraction. TopMarks (Make sure you push yourself and try the trickier levels too).
NUMERACY
Group 1: Last fraction worksheets for this week. Please complete fraction search and if you can the non-unit fractions worksheets.
Fraction search is very straight forward and will not take you long at all so everyone please complete.
Non-unit fractions worksheet is a bit trickier. If you find it too difficult just leave this sheet as it is very an extension activity. Question 1 is the most straight forward part. However, when you come to question 2 you need to count the total number of balls/cars/sweets then divide them by the bottom number (denominator) then multiply by the top number (numerator). If you struggle to divide in your head (use your tables) then try using counters/toys/marbles etc and practically divide.
Question 3 is an extension question so don't panic if you can't do it.
a) 3/4 of 100cm = 100 divide by 4 then multiply by 3
b) 3/5 of 400g = 400 divide by 5 (think of 40 divided by 5 to help you) then multiple by 3
c) 2/3 of 150ml = 150 divide by 3 then multiple by 2
This is a good link to watch before completing the tricker worksheet - Fraction of a number
Group 2: Some more revision activities. Please complete Taking Away worksheet and Numbers to 100 worksheet.
Group 3: Complete the next page of your time booklet. If you have finished the first booklet focusing on past times and you are confident with all the times on the past side of the clock then start the 'to' booklet. I will put more time game links up tomorrow. Use the below clock to help you.

Tuesday 12th May
It's Tuesday already! We hope you got on well with yesterday's work.
We hope you are trying to read every day. Try to spend 10-15 minutes per day reading (longer if you want). Talk to an adult about what you have read. We may even complete a book review in a few weeks. Here is a link to Libraries NI where you can download books using your library card number. Remember your number was on the front of your first pack folder. I have a boy that is eight at home with me and his is really enjoying reading Tom Gates, Frankie's Magic Football books by Frank Lampard, Michael Morpurgo books, Books by David Walliams and Diary of the Wimpy Kid. These are just a few suggestions but I know there are hundreds of other books and authors available to children. Also try to read some non-fiction books. Why not look at animal fact books to link to our topic or do some research on a topic that's of interest to you. In my house that is space and flags!

Friday 8th May
Happy VE Day everyone. It's 75 years since the celebrations marking the end of WW2!
I was delighted when I logged on to Purple Mash last night as all your work came through for the games I set last week (the ones I thought weren't work as nothing was appearing on my computer). Reading the lovely messages you are leaving us shows us you are enjoying these activities. Most are fun activities to complete after all your hard work doing literacy and numeracy. Hope the reports on the platypus went well. We look forward to seeing them if you send them through to the office.
It is the official bank holiday today so Mum or Dad will decide how much (if any) work to complete today. Why not spend some time doing some art relating to VE Day or watch the links or powerpoint that we put up yesterday. If it's sunny get outside and play or explore, if the weather isn't so good why not do some art or baking (practise all the weighing we have been doing this week).
Have a lovely weekend and we will see you here again on Monday.

Thursday 7th May

Good morning Year 4 .
It's hard to believe it's already Thursday. Tomorrow is a bank holiday. We set work but please only complete the work in the planner if you wish (we completely forgot this was a four day week). Parents and children all deserve a day off now and again. 😃
LITERACY
Yesterday you were all doing some research on quite a peculiar animal. We hope you found out lots of interesting facts about 'the duck billed platypus'. There are links to some videos in yesterday's notes if you haven't already looked at them.
Group 1 and 2 your job today is to complete the report on the sheet provided in your pack. When you have your report completed we would love you to email us a copy or a photo of it. Don't worry if you can't, we realise that it takes time to do this. Perhaps save up a few photos and send them all at the same time?
Group 3: Today you will be working on descriptions. Remember to use adjectives (describing words). When you complete the description of a family member why not email a photo of it in to school so we can see it. Don't forget capital letters and full stops.
MENTAL MATHS
Group 1 and 2: Eggs on legs
Group 3: Hit the button: halves
NUMERACY
All groups:
We've covered all the 'past' times so are going to introduce the 'to' times. '5 to' means there are '5 more minutes to go' until it is the next hour.
e.g 5 to 6 / five minutes to six
Simply put means that in five minutes it will be 6 o'clock ( As long as the hour hand is pointing at the 6 and not vastly after or before it I wouldn't worry too much about positioning just yet).
The accompanying worksheets ( you always fly through these in school) are quite repetitive to help reinforce the position of the hands . Remember : the long hand shows the minutes and the short hand shows the hours. Please don't draw your clock hands the same length.
These may be useful time games.
Parents : please remember that telling the time can be a very tricky concept for lots of children to grasp. Some take longer than others. They will all be able to do it when they're ready as long as we continue to teach them and encourage them. In other words don't panic :)

Monday 4th May
It's the start of another next teaching week. As the weeks go on we are miss all of you more and more! This is the fifth week that you have been learning at home so you are looking at Week 5 on the timetable.
To clear up any confusion please follow the mental maths on the timetable (not on the spelling sheets as these have ended up out of sync). Sorry for any confusion caused regarding this. You are very welcome to do the mental maths on the spelling sheets as addition learning if you feel you require more work.
LITERACY
This week's literacy focus will be on our Bugs, Birds and Beasts topic for most groups.
Group 1 - You have a cloze procedure to complete today that links to animals. It is 'All About Giraffes'.
Here are some links to learn more about giraffes before you begin.
Giraffes
Giraffes 2
Be careful with spelling as all the words are spelt correctly on the sheet. Remember neat handwriting and place letters correctly on or under the line. Read the passage through first to get an idea what it is about before starting to fill in the missing words. There is an extension activity to try at the bottom of the page which will require you doing a little research to find out e.g. what weighs the same as 34kg or which other animals live in Africa. Record this in your classwork book.
Group 2 - You are completing an animal report today. The sheet is in your pack. You need to choose a favourite animal and write a report on it. In the box, on you page, draw or print out a picture of your animal and try to write three interesting facts. Underneath the box you can write the animal name and a short description of what they look like. Remember reports include FACTS.
Group 3 - You are continuing on with your Collins English 1 Workbook and completing page 5 and 12. Use the wordbooks below to label the objects. Careful with spelling and handwriting. If you wish you could also draw or print a picture of your favourite animal and write a few facts about it.
NUMERACY
This week's focus is WEIGHT (also known as MASS)
ALL GROUPS: It is very important to carry out practical activities before completing written activities on weight.
Today carry out some practical work using scales with an adult. Find objects in your kitchen which are heavier than 1kg, about 1kg and lighter than 1kg. Objects to use e.g. an apple, tin of beans, bag of sugar, jar of Nutella (my favourite!), bag of flour etc. Look at packages and see if you can see what weight they are. Weight is measured in grams and kilograms.
Below are links to introduce weight and measuring:
Weight 1 - Balance scales
Weight 2 - Using a scale: Kilograms
Weight 3 - Measure weight in grams and kilograms
You need to learn :
- There are 1000grams in 1kilogram
- There are 500 grams in 1/2 kilogram
Other good things to know:
- there are 250grams in a quarter of a kilogram
- there are 750grams in three quarters of a kilogram
ALL GROUPS: Have a look in your kitchen cupboards at different items and write down the weight of them e.g. a bag of flour weighs 750g. (compare these weights to 1 kilogram and half kilograms.
CHALLENGE: Can you five 5 objects of different weights and order them from lightest to heaviest? Take a photo and send it into school.
Group 1: After practical work complete Pg 86 and 87 in NHM textbook
Group 2: After practical work complete Pg 86 in NHM textbook
Group 3: After practical work on weight please record the weight of five different objects you found in your kitchen and then complete NHM Addition and Subtraction Booklet Pg 19
Why not do some baking with an adult by helping weigh out different ingredients. It will help your weight work and reading recipes linking to our instructional writing. The bonus is you have yummy treats to eat at the end!
MENTAL MATHS
Group 1 - Recap of 4 and 6 time tables - Play Hit the Button and record your best score. Can you beat 20/20?
Hit the Button
Group 2 - Recap 2,5 and 10 times tables (extend to 4 X if possible)

Wednesday 29th

So this week saw some of us learning about facts and opinions. You had a printed out powerpoint in your pack but the actual powerpoint can be found by clicking here if you wish to view it. Many of you will be doing some more fact and opinion work on Friday so make sure you look again at the powerpoint and watch the YouTube videos from Monday to remind you what they are. For a fact and opinion game click here (you don't need to worry about them talking about sending things to your teacher on see saw).
Tomorrow is independent writing day. I would like you to focus on punctuation! Remember capital letters and full stops. Also remember the other things we use when writing - 7 up rule, starting sentences in different ways, using adjectives, use conjunctions to join sentences.
Group 1 will be writing a comic strip. The outline is provided in your pack. Today you read a story about Peter Rabbit but tomorrow it's your turn to be creative and make up an adventure for Peter and his friends. It may be good to watch an episode of Peter Rabbit to get some inspiration. Click here to view an episode of Peter Rabbit.
Here is a link to an introduction to writing a comic strip.
Things to remember:
- When characters speak in a comic strip we use speech bubbles - YOU DON'T USE SPEECH MARKS INSIDE SPEECH BUBBLES.
- We write a caption below the picture to tell the reader what is happening e.g. Peter and Cotton Tail ran quickly towards Benjamin's house.
- We draw the characters in the box and use speech bubbles. For example: In the speech bubble you could have Peter saying - Quick Cotton Tail! We need to find Benjamin. In Cotton Tail's speech bubble she could be saying - Slow down Peter! I can't keep up. REMEMBER - don't use speech marks inside speech bubbles.
We hope you enjoy making your own comic strip. Please take a photograph of it when you finish and email it to the school office so we can see them and put them up on this page!`
When you finish why not watch the Peter Rabbit movie, if you have access to it.
Group 2 - You will be thinking about The Great Chapatti Chase again tomorrow. You will have to come up with a different kind of food and complete the story sheet. It is important to then retell your story to an adult. Why not try recording yourself. Then it's time to think about the woman in the story and how she is feeling. Use the thought bubbles to write what she would be thinking at different stages of the story.
Group 3 - You will be writing a set of instructions for washing your hands. This is very important especially at the moment due to Covid 19. Today's comprehension was about simple instructions.
Click this link to watch washing your hands video - listen careful to the verbs used - rub, wet etc
You need to include three sections for instructions.
Section 1 - title (to tell what the instructions are for)
Section 2 - what you need section. Use bullet points to list the things you need.
Section 3 - method. Use numbered instructions to tell the reader what to do. Remember instructions start with a bossy verb e.g. Turn on the tap.
Remember capital letters and full stops. We don't use 'then' in instructions, instead start a new instruction.
Take a photograph of your work when you finish and email it to the school office.

Monday 27th April

Good morning Year 4.
Week 4 of home schooling! We are missing you all so much! Hope everyone had a lovely weekend and enjoyed the beautiful sunshine, especially on Saturday. Why not pop over to our Purple Mash blog and tell us what you got up to over the weekend. Also we have a blog for interesting animal facts you have learnt. Thank you Sam and Abbie for putting one up already. Thanks to all that have completed the butterfly art activity and the classification games on Purple Mash too.
NUMERACY
In numeracy this week we will be focusing on money. If possible, it would be good to count real money from around your house (remember to wash you hands after touching money).
Remember that 100p equal £1 and that we draw the pound sign first. Also we don't use a 'p' if we use '£'sign
Remember how we counted on to give change. Count to the next multiple of ten then count up to 50p then to the next pound. See below method to remind you.
Remember to you the TopMarks website to play games to help with money and change (you can click here to go to the website). Remember to start easy and then as you become more confident try the harder levels.

LITERACY
In literacy this week we will be learning about prefixes. Below are links to help explain prefixes before you get started on the work from your pack. A PREFIX is a group of letters that can be added to the beginning of a word to change its meaning.
Prefixes 1
Prefixes 2
We will also learn about facts and opinions this week. Check out the below links before trying the work from your pack.
Fact and opinion
Fact and opinion with Arthur (you can watch this and answer the questions orally but as it is on YouTube you can't click to play the actual game).

Good morning Year 4!
It's nearly the weekend and another week completed of school work from home. We hope everything is going well. Last night I was able to approve all the lovely comments on our Purple Mash Home Learning 2020 blog (I'm learning new things too! ) and it was so fantastic to hear from lots of you. Please feel free to pop onto the blog and share what you are all doing at home.
Also we set up a new blog focusing on Bugs, Birds and Beasts (our new topic if you have time to research it). If you know or have learnt a new and exciting fact please pop it up on this new blog so we can all see it! We have one already there!
The picture below shows what you are looking for in Purple Mash.
There are also a few Purple Mash activities set up for you all, connected to this topic, if you wish to do them. They should appear for you as a new 'to do'. They are sorting games and an art activity.
Stay safe and we will see you all soon.
P.S. This is a super live wildlife channel if you want to check it out Africam. You can watch different waterholes etc in Africa and see so many amazing animals in the wild. I saw elephants last night!

Wednesday 22nd April
Good afternoon Year 4. We hope you all got your new packs yesterday and are settling back into a daily routine of work and play! It is important to set up a good routine. An idea of a daily timetable could be:
8.45 - Check our web page
9am - PE with Joe
9.30 - Daily literacy and daily numeracy booklets
9.45 - Spellings and phonics activity
10.00 - Break
10.30 - Literacy - task from pack
11.15 - Games or outdoor play
11.30 - Mental maths
11.45 - Numeracy - task from pack
12.30 - Lunch
1.15 - Purple Mash time - either complete activity set or free choice
1.45 - BBC Bitesize (see link below)
2.05 - Be creative with art, music, drama or dance or why not do some World Around Us and discover things out about bugs, birds and beasts.
This is only an idea and we are aware that every family may wish to set up their own routine, it must work for you. It is important that pupils get the opportunity to carry out tasks around the house like make their bed, sort washing, set the table, they could also help in the garden or with cooking/baking.

There are very good programmes on BBC Bitesize each day covering a range of topics including numeracy, geography, history and literacy. You can access BBC Bitesize by clicking on the above link or go through iPlayer app on a smart TV. They last approximately twenty minutes each.
Bugs, Birds and Beasts

If we had been in school together we would have been starting our new topic - Bugs, Birds and Beasts. This is my favourite Year 4 topic so I thought I would put up some videos, games and activities relating to animals here. There is no pressure to complete these WAU activities but they are here if you wish (especially on a rainy day!)
Animals can be divided into two groups vertebrates or invertebrates. Watch the video in this link to find out more:

Monday 20th April
Welcome back Year 4. We hope you had a lovely Easter and enjoyed spending time with your family in the beautiful sunshine. Thanks to all that have sent in photographs. It is so lovely to see your happy smiling faces as we are missing you a lot! Please keep emailing the school office with photographs.
To start us all into routine again try to do a page from your daily literacy and daily numeracy workbooks today. Also use Hit the Button to revise all the multiplication facts you have learnt for your mental maths. It is important to try to read everyday so let's do some reading today. Also for anyone on Lexia, get logged on today and spend 20 minutes on your phonics.
You you won't be receiving your packs until tomorrow but they will follow the same format as the last timetables. You have your spelling lists for this week at home so you can do your Monday phonics activity. Also today for literacy try to complete the next comprehension in your comprehension textbook. For numeracy complete the pages on '25 past 'in your time booklet. Remember when working on the past side of the clock you count in fives.
Keep stay and see you soon xxx

Easter Holidays
Well done to everyone as you have now completed two weeks of home learning! We hope that things have been going well. Thank you to everyone that completed the activities on Purple Mash (sorry the speech marks activity was so tricky!). We will not be setting work over the next two weeks as it is the Easter holidays. We would however like you to continue to read daily and revise your number facts and tables (Hit the Button). Please spent some time over Easter being creative, playing board games or spending quality time with your family.
Happy Easter to you all. Please stay safe and remember to email your photographs to the school email and they will appear on our page. It's great to see a photo already up - loving your little garden! We have started a blog on Purple Mash if you want to add something to this too it would be great to hear from you.

We really missed all your April fool tricks and jokes yesterday. I wonder did you play tricks on anyone at home? 🤔🙈 There were lots of tricks going on in my house!!!
We hope you are getting on well with the work we have set for you. Please just try your best and have a go!
We know how much most of you love art so we have put a Purple Mash activity on to design an Easter egg! 🐣 You will see this in your alerts when you log in to Purple Mash. The hand in date for this one is after Easter so hopefully you will all get a chance to complete it.
Well done to everyone who has tried the speech marks activity. It’s very tricky!!! So well done for giving it a go.
Stay safe Xx

Tuesday 31st March
Hi Year 4! Can you believe it’s the last day of March!! Tomorrow starts a new month.
If you managed to be in school two weeks ago you will have learnt about speech marks. Remember speech marks go around direct speech (the words people actually say). Don’t forget to include punctuation before closing speech marks.
If you missed this teaching try to get an adult to go over it with you please. There is a PowerPoint on Twinkl (which is free to all at the moment) that will help explain speech marks (also known as inverted commas). It talks about using single or double inverted commas. In Year 4 we use the double inverted commas so please use these in your work.
Here is the link to Twinkl and just search speech marks PowerPoint https://www.twinkl.co.uk/
This week I have set a Purple Mash activity on speech marks if you want to have a go sign in to your Purple Mash account.
Well done to Rhea, Daniel, Charis and Gabby for completing the time activity last week and achieving such fantastic scores 👏
The picture below shows the Purple Mash task - enjoy 😉

Monday 30th March
Good morning Year 4. How are you all doing? We really hope you and your family are keeping well. We are missing you loads! We miss your smiling faces, your stories, your laughter and even sorting out your squabbles!!! 🙈
This is such a strange time for us all. It’s really hard to set you all work without teaching it to you first but just try your best and if you can, get an adult to help you. If you can’t complete all the written activities, discuss the questions with an adult and answer them orally.
You will have another week’s work in your pack so just follow the timetable as best as you can.
It is really important to read everyday. Try to read a few pages (at least) out loud to an adult and discuss what you have read with them. Also use Hit the Button to revise multiplication facts and continue to read and spell high frequency words.
PE
As the weather has been so lovely we encourage you to spend time in the garden (if you can). Have fun and get some well needed fresh air. Try throwing and catching, running, skipping, jumping. Or remember our circuits lessons - sit up, star jumps, high knees etc. Work hard for 30 seconds then rest of 20 seconds.
Why not try Joe Wicks PE lessons on YouTube every morning at 9am as this is what has been happening in my house and we are loving it. Get Mummy and Daddy to join in too 😃
ART
Don’t forget to try some art activities relating to our WW2 topic if you wish. You could design a child’s gas mask based on a cartoon character, make a ration book, name tag or an identify book.
WAU
Remember you can finish watching Spy Watch on YouTube as I know we were all enjoying watching that!! Also research information on Anne Frank.
Remember these are all extra ideas! We don’t expect you to complete them all but they are ideas if you need them.
We hope you have a good week and please stay safe. We miss you all.

Hi Year 4. Hope you are getting on ok at home with the work we have set for you.
We have set a little Purple Mash task. It’s a game to help with time so have a go if you can. Remember your log in details are in the front of your homework diary and reading diary. The hand in date is Monday. Enjoy 😉

Good evening Year 4.
We hope you are all keeping well and are staying safe. We have been very sad not to get to see you all but we hope you are enjoying spending time with your family at home.
By now you will all have collected your pack from school. We hope that you are trying your best to do some of the work we have set for you but we understand it may be difficult at the moment so just try your best.
It’s so important to keep reading everyday and to have a go at Hit the Button to help with tables and mental maths.
Keep an eye out on Purple Mash as we will try to put up some activities later in the week,
Keep safe and keep washing your hands!!! 😃

The children and staff thoroughly enjoyed our recent sponsored walk. It has been fantastic to see the support we have received by many pupils sending in their sponsorship money. This money directly impacts the resources we can provide for the pupils therefore your support is essential and very much appreciated. Any outstanding sponsorship money should be sent in as soon as possible please.
Once again thank you for your continued support.

Our PE lessons throughout September have focused on gymnastics - Jumping and Landing. The pupils have worked hard perfecting their jumps and landings. Last week we got out our 'Gym Time' apparatus and the pupils had a great time experimenting with jumps and different ways to travel. Check out the photographs below. Lots of happy, smiling faces!
Welcome to Year 4. It is fantastic that all pupils have settled in so well and are already working hard in Year 4. Your child is adapting well to new routines and we appreciate your support.
A few helpful reminders to help with the smoothly running of Year 4:
Please ensure you child is in school in good time in the mornings. Lessons will start promptly at 9.10am so it is essential the pupils are ready for this time.
It is also essential that all pupils have the necessary books and equipment they need for the day. We have introduced 'home folders' this year and these are proving very successful. Please help your child by ensuring they have everything they need in these. (see check list below).
Please do not send your child into school with toys from home (unless requested to bring in a toy for Golden time - once a month) as they can be a distraction during teaching time and they may be lost or broken which will cause upset for your child. We have a wide variety of educational toys in school which your child will have the opportunity to play with during our activity based learning sessions and golden time.
Your assistance with this is much appreciated.
