Drama: Lost and Found Cat
Year 5 have started a new Drama unit linked to the book, 'Lost and Found Cat'. Today, they used freeze-frames (a Drama strategy) to act out scenes from the first part of the story. They also used thought tracking to speak aloud and share the thoughts and feelings of their characters. Well done, everyone!
RE: Amazing Journey!
It was wonderful to have Amazing Journey in school this afternoon to teach us lots about the Bible! We had the opportunity to dress up and try food from biblical times, and even meet some key characters from the Bible stories!
PE: Cricket!
It has been lovely to get outside in the warmer weather to practise our batting skills as part of our new 'Kwik Cricket' PE unit! Everyone participated very well in their first batting session and will continue to work on grip, stance and swing over the next few weeks!

Easter Competitions!
Congratulations to our 'Design an Easter Egg' competition winners! It was very difficult to choose a winner; we thought all of the entries looked fabulous! Congratulations also to our Year 5 pupil who guessed the bunny's name correctly - we hope Lulu enjoys her new home! Wishing everyone a lovely Easter break. -Mr. Bovis & Mrs Cairns.
World Around Us: The Celts
In their World Around Us lessons, Year 5 have been learning about the Celts and the Romans. Did you know that the Celts used a blue dye to stain their skin, in order to make them look more fierce in battle? All of our pupils had a go at creating their own Celtic war paint designs!
NICHS Chester's Challenge Week 3
Year 5 had their final session with NICHS this morning where they discussed screen time, ways to relax and food labelling. A huge THANK YOU to NICHS for organising these sessions for us; we have really enjoyed unlocking the '10 Gems of Knowledge' through all of their fantastic interactive activities!
Forest School Day 2
On 5th March We had our second day of Forest School activities, organised by the Northern Ireland Forest Schools Association. We learned a lot about fire safety, including how to create and manage small fires using tools such as firesticks. It was tricky but some of us were successful in igniting small amounts of cotton wool. Our reward was the smores cooked over the fire and eaten at the end!
World Book Day 2024
As part of their World Book Day celebrations, Year 5 thoroughly enjoyed a visit down to Foundation Stage to read with the Year 1 pupils!
One of our Year 5 pupils wanted to read a poem to the class as part of World Book Day. He chose 'My Teacher's Going Crazy!' by Bridget Hilinski.
NICHS Chester's Challenge Week 2
Did you know that children should get an average of 60 minutes of moderate to intense physical activity every day? Year 5 do, as they had their second session from NI Chest, Heart & Stroke today! They had an active session in the assembly hall as the theme was, 'Move More, Sit Less!'
February
NICHS Chester's Challenge Week 1
Over the next three weeks, Year 5 will be participating in 'Chester's Challenge' activities delivered by NICHS. Today, they had their first session where the theme was 'Eat a Balanced Diet'. They played games to help them remember important information, e.g. it is recommended that we drink 6-8 glasses of water every day. We were very impressed with our pupils' knowledge and understanding of a balanced lifestyle!
Numeracy: 3D Shape
In Numeracy this week, Year 5 have enjoyed experimenting with different nets to support them with their 3D shape knowledge and understanding!
Children's Mental Health Week: Art Lesson with Sinead McDermott
As part of Children's Mental Health Week, Year 5 had a virtual art class with Sinead McDermott. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the session and we were blown away by the children's beach landscape creations!
Safer Internet Day: Board Game Competition
Year 5 have worked so hard on designing their own board games as part of our Safer Internet Day competition. Well done everyone - they look fantastic and raise awareness of important online safety tips!
PTA Movie Day!
We had a fabulous Movie Day in Year 5 today! Thank you to the PTA for organising it and for our popcorn and drinks!

Dairy Council Visit
Year 5 enjoyed their talk from the Diary Council this morning! We learned about the main food groups and the importance of having a healthy, balanced lifestyle.
World Around Us: Fairtrade
As part of their Fairtrade topic in World Around Us, Year 5 have enjoyed learning about the journey of a banana! Everyone was able to sequence events in the journey, from growing on banana farms near the equator to our local supermarket shelves.
As part of World Around Us, Year 5 have been learning all about Fairtrade and the history of Fairtrade logos. The children had lots of fun designing and presenting their very own Fairtrade logos as part of Show and Tell. Well done, everyone!

Christmas and 'Festive Friday' Activities!
Merry Christmas from Year 5! We have really enjoyed our final week of term. We'd like to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who donated food for our Christmas Party, and to the PTA for their Christmas craft activities and treats!
Enjoying Christmas themed group work and practising Makaton sign language for our Christmas assembly.
We had an amazing final Festive Friday with our campfire surprise! We wrote Christmas wishes, toasted marshmallows and sang Christmas songs!
Christmas has arrived in Year 5! We had a great first 'Festive Friday' today with lots of fun, games and sports activities!
Fire Safety Talk from Ballynahinch Fire Station
Did you know you should be checking your smoke alarm once a week? Year 5 do as we had a fire safety talk from Ballynahinch Fire Station this morning! Everyone partipated very well in the session and, as you can see, had a lot of fun trying on the uniform!

Forest School
Year 5 started Forest School training recently. We used our locality to find and use natural materials to create some artwork. Thankfully the sun was shining!
Numeracy: Exploring Angles
We have been exploring angles in Numeracy this week and have been using our Right Angle Finder to check different right angles around our classroom!
Anti-Bullying Week 2023
As part of Anti-Bullying Week, we had an excellent interactive workshop led by HIP Psychology. All of our Year 5 pupils listened and participated extremely well. Thank you to Mr. Armstrong for helping organise this for us - a very improtant workshop, indeed!
Numeracy: Measuring
This week, we have had very practical Numeracy lessons as we have been exploring measurement! On Friday, we used the measuring tapes to measure our heights. We were able to represent our measurements in metres and centimetres.

Hallowe'en Hamper Winners
Congratulations to our Hallowe'en Hamper winners! Thank you so much to everyone who donated prizes. Wishing you all a happy and safe half term break; see you in November!
PDMU: 'Myself and My Attributes'
As part of our P.D.M.U. topic 'Myself and My Attributes', our Year 5 puils took part in a roleplay activity where they interviewed different members of the class to find out interesting facts about each other! They then presented their findings to the rest of the class. Well done, Year 5!
Numeracy: Fractions
Our Year 5 children thoroughly enjoyed exploring fractions through a delicious Smarties activity! They had to count how many Smarties were in their tube altogether (the denominator) and then record how many of each colour there was (the numerator). We love our hands-on learning activities!
Literacy: Haiku Poetry
Year 5 have been inspired by the beautiful colours of Autumn and, after exploring descriptive vocabulary, created their own Autumn Haiku poems!

World Around Us: Holidays and Journeys
As part of their Holdays and Journeys topic, Year 5 have enjoyed creating their own Wacky Racers! Their designs will be used to inspire a Magical Journey narrative account in Literacy. We have had some amazing designs and can't wait to read about the adventures they go on!
Goals for Year 5
The children have had a lovely first week in Year 5 and, on Friday afternoon, enjoyed reflecting on their goals for the year ahead!
