I tried a different bend water experiment.
I blew up a balloon and then rubbed it with my hands. Then I put the balloon close to the thin flowing stream of water. The water bent towards the balloon. My Mum took some photos and a video to show you what happened. The static electricity from the balloon pulls the positive force of the water towards it. |

Suggested Daily Timetable
A daily routine is helpful when home learning. The pupils are familiar with a daily structure in school. A daily timetable can be helpful so that everyone knows the expectations for the day and helps to make learning time productive. Below you will see a suggested timetable document which you can use or adapt. I hope that it will be helpful.
I'll put posts on our Year 3 blog over the next few weeks where the children can share how they are helping around the house, being creative, what they are doing for exercise etc so that they can encourage each other. We're working together to help each other.

END of YEAR REPORTS
Parents - please collect your child's end of year report on Tuesday 30th June from the school office.
They will be available to collect between 10.00am and 1.00pm.
Please return any school textbooks/reading books when you come to collect the report. It would be appreciated if you could put the books into one of the manilla folders from the pupil packs or a plastic bag with your child's name on it.
We really need to get these books back as there are many hundreds of pounds worth of books, that we can't afford to lose.
Thank you.

Friday 26th June
Good morning Year 3! I hope that you are all keeping well. Today's post will be that last one on the Year 3 class page. Monday and Tuesday can be days were you finish off any Year 3 work but I'm hoping that you've kept up with your work and are able to enjoy a well earned break! Mums and dads too! Well done everyone!
Try to visit the school website occasionally during the break in case there's an update for you.
Today we will focus on:
- Numeracy - Handling Data
Squares, Rectangles and Triangles - Today we will focus on Venn Diagrams.
The first activities involve sorting the numbers into two or three groups with no overlap (page 30).
- Firstly, sort the numbers into odds and evens. Remember to look at the units digit when deciding if a number is 'odd' or 'even' e.g. 17, 7 is odd therefore 17 is odd.
- Secondly, sort the numbers depending on the tens digit e.g. 39, this number has 3 tens.
The next two Venn Diagrams involve an overlap (page 31).
- On first Venn Diagram we are sorting the numbers into 'Even numbers' and 'Two-digit numbers'. Make sure you know which numbers are even and which numbers have two digits before you begin. Explain what this means to an adult. Here are a few reminders:
- On the second Venn Diagram we are sorting for 'Multiples of 2' and 'Multiples of 5'. It may be helpful to write out the multiples of 2 and 5 before beginning the task e.g. multiples of 2 - 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 etc, multiples of 5 - 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 30 etc. Use these to help you to complete the Venn Diagram.

- Remember, once again, that it's the units digit that is important when recognising even numbers.
- If a number is even but doesn't have two digits, write it in the circle on the left.
- If a number has two digits but isn't even, write it in the circle on the right.
- If a number is even and is a two digit number, write it in the middle where the two circles overlap.

Circles - Today we are finishing our work on bar graphs. Your activity shows a bar graph which displays the food some children have eaten. Look at the bar graph and tell an adult about the information shown in the graph before completing the written task.
- How many children ate fish, pizza, salad or burger?
- Which food was most popular?
- Which was least popular?
- How many children had lunch?
- How many more children had fish than burger?
Literacy - Comprehension
Blue, Green and Purple Groups - Today our comprehension is called 'How to Make Storybooks'. This is a lovely activity to finish with. You may be finding that you've read lots of the books in your house. What about making a storybook of your own. Today's task is all about instructions and being able to understand the sequence of steps in order to complete a task. Read the instructions carefully two or three times and discuss with an adult. Answer the questions to show understanding of the text. If you were to make a storybook of your own, what would it be about? If you make a storybook, maybe you could send me a photo. I'd like to see it!
Lexia Group - 20 minutes of Lexia activities.
- Purple Mash
Today's activity is a painting task. I'd like you to paint a picture to show something that you've enjoyed doing in Year 3. I'll post them on our display board to show the rest of our class. Enjoy being creative.
- Let's Celebrate - Memory Book
How are you getting on with your 'Memory Book'? I hope that you've been able to draw and write about your memories. You may need an adult to help with memories from when you were very little. Have fun talking about special times and maybe even enjoy some funny stories!
I'll finish with a couple of reminders!
- Reports can be collected on Tuesday 30th June from the school office. They will be available between 10:00am - 1:00pm.
- Return the following books:
- Summer homework
Keep reading over the summer and record books you've read on the Readathon sheet. I'll have prizes for readers with completed sheets when we return to school.
Write a diary entry for one day of the summer break (you could photocopy the page if you'd like to do more!). I'll have prizes for writers too!
Complete the other activities in the pack when you are getting ready to return to school. Have another go at some of the activities and games we've played to help us with our learning.
- Libraries NI Digital Summer Reading Challenge - sign up to the challenge and keep reading over the summer.
Finally, you're a super group of children and I've loved getting to know you all. Well done to all of you for the learning you've done this year. You're a great class and I've enjoyed being your teacher. I have missed you so much over these last months but it's been great to talk to you on the phone, receive photos and see your work and posts on Purple Mash.
Laura, Jennifer and I would like to wish you all a lovely summer break and we look forward to seeing you when you are in Year 4. You already know your new teachers. Maybe you could tell a grown up their names, something you know about Year 4 and something that they have taught you in afternoon class or at gymnastics.
Have a great summer,

Wednesday 24th June
Hello everyone. I hope that you are keeping well. Great to see lots of 'Alerts' on Purple Mash again this week. I'm so pleased that you are continuing to complete your tasks during these last few days of Year 3. I have enjoyed talking to you on the phone over the period of time where we haven't been in school and will be getting in touch this week to see how you are.
Our focus for today:
- Numeracy - Handling Data
Squares, Rectangles and Triangles - Today we are reinforcing our understanding of Carroll Diagrams. We'll begin with two Carroll Diagrams were we are sorting for one criterion (page 28). Firstly, even and odd. Read each number and write it in the correct place. Then cross out the number, as has been done with the first number. Secondly, sort the numbers into two groups, those 'less than 25' and those 'not less than 25'.

Secondly, sort the numbers into two groups, those 'less than 25' and those 'not less than 25'.

Then we will move on to sorting for two criteria. Remember the read the headings carefully and read each number, one at a time, and write it onto the Carroll Diagram using the headings.
Let's look at the first one that been done for you. Number 31.
- Is 31 an 'even' number or an 'odd' number? Yes, it's 'odd' so it goes in one of the boxes on the right.
- Is 31 'less than 25' or 'not less then 25'? That's right, 31 is 'not less than 25' so it goes in the bottom right box.
Follow the same strategies for the second Carroll Diagram where you are sorting for multiples of 5 and whether a number is on a blue shirt or not. It may be helpful to write out the multiples of 5 before beginning the task. e.g. 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 etc.

Circles - Today we are learning about bar graphs. We are sorting the names by counting the number of letters in each name.
- Count the number of letters in each name.
- Write it onto the chart.
- Tick the name when you have finished, before moving onto the next name.
- Then colour the bar graph to show the number of names which have 3, 4 and 5 letters.
- Where would Salma's name go on the graph?

Literacy - Independent Writing
Today I would like you to write a book review about a book that you have read recently. Begin by writing the book review in your 'My Own Writing' book.
- Your title will be the book name.
- Write the author's name underneath the title.
- Begin your writing by explaining what the story is about. Pretend you are talking to someone who hasn't read the story.
- Explain who the main characters are, where the story is set and what the main parts of the story are.
- Then write about what you think of the story. What are your thoughts?
- Conclude by explaining whether you'd recommend the book to a friend or not.
Purple Mash
Log on to Purple Mash and click on today's '2Do'. Complete the book review task.

Tuesday 23rd June
Good morning Year 3. I hope that you are all keeping well.
Firstly, well done to everyone who has completed the Mashcam activity about special memories. It was lovely to see your photos too. I know that a couple of you are adding a little more to your piece of writing but well done to Ross, Zach, Nathan, Niamh, Eva, Reuben, Gemma, Amelie and Joel for sharing your recount. There’s still time to complete this, if you haven’t had a chance yet. Also, great wrapping paper designs and special mentions to artists Georgia, Ross, Zach, Nathan, Niamh, Amelie, Reuben and Joel. Great artistic ideas.
Our focus for today:
- Numeracy - Money
Squares, Rectangles and Triangles - Today you are completing some revision work of concepts covered this year but with larger amounts of money so that we can finish with some challenges. The concepts are the same - making amounts of money, adding coins and ticking coins to make an amount. Use the strategies that you’ve been using to complete these tasks. We’ll finish our work on money with two fun tasks! Can you create a creature of your own using any of the coins we’ve used this year? Finally, the Coin Challenge. Colour the following numbers of the hundred square:
47, 34, 26, 84, 64, 25, 56, 44, 57, 27, 54, 37, 55, 74, 24.
Can you work out which letter is uncovered? Why do you think this letter was the hidden letter? What’s the connection between this letter and money?
Circles - Complete your 1p and 2p activities today, if you can. Practise using the 1p and 2p coins to make amounts or maybe an adult could give you some of these coins and you could tell them the total.

Literacy - Grammar
Blue and Green Groups - Today we are finding out about another use of the apostrophe. Last week we learned about how the apostrophe can be used for omission. Examples of this would be in words like it’s, can’t and aren’t. I wonder could you make a list of the words you know that use apostrophe for omission?
Today we are learning about how an apostrophe with the letter ‘s’ can be used to show possession e.g. Rachel’s jumper, Peter’s football, Mrs Irvine’s Desk. Click here for a BBC Bitesize clip to help you. Can you complete the activity on apostrophe for possession in your vocabulary textbook?
You’ll have noticed that there are review tasks in your textbook. If you’re looking for activities to check your understanding of Year 3 vocabulary, grammar and punctuation, complete these tasks. It’s up to you.

Purple Group - Today we are learning about punctuating sentences. We know that sentences begin with a capital letter and finish with a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark. How do you know which punctuation mark to use if you are completing your own writing task? Tell an adult the answer to this question and see if you’re right. Complete the punctuation activity in your textbook.
Your textbook contains three review tasks. These are great activities to check your understanding of the concepts covered. You could complete these tasks, if you would like to test your understanding of vocabulary, grammar and punctuation.
Lexia Group - 20 minutes using Lexia.

Tomorrow you’re going to be writing a book review. Is there a book that you’ve enjoyed reading during lockdown. Maybe you’ve told us about it on the Year 3 blog on Purple Mash. Firstly, think about what the story is about and then what you thought about the story. Would you recommend it to a friend?

Monday 22nd June
Hello Year 3. I hope that you are all well and have had a lovely weekend.
Please continue to visit the class page every day this week to read about the activities the pupils are working on. I will be posting up until Friday. Next week you can check that you have completed all the tasks and use the last two days of June to complete any work that is unfinished. Let's make this last full week a great week of learning.
Remember ….
Daily Check List
- Check the Year 3 Class Page
- Read every day
- Spellings and number facts
- Mental Maths and Literacy Practice
- Numeracy and Literacy tasks
- Purple Mash
Today we will focus on:
- Literacy - Phonics
Blue and Green Groups - This week our sound is 'h/wh'. Complete the activity in your Phonics Booklet. We don't normally do spellings on the last full week of term but you could try to learn to spell some of the words on your phonics activity, if you would like to.
Purple Group - This week you are beginning Stage 5 sounds. Well done! This is very exciting! You've made great progress. Stage 5 sounds are sounds that can be written in different ways. We say that they have different representations. The 'ee' sound or long vowel e sound can be written 'ee', 'ea', 'e' or 'y'. (There are some other ways that you'll learn about in Year 4. You'll see some of them in the scaffolded text in your booklet.) Today I would like you to read the scaffolded text first. It's the story of Weird Pete Bradley. All the 'ee' sounds are written in blue to help you to read the text. Read the text several times to develop understanding. Then complete the next task which is a word sort. The word sort table has four columns. Write the four representations as the heading for each column (see the photo). Sort the words at the bottom of the page into the four columns by recognising how the 'ee' sound is written. I've done the first four to show you what to do. Tick each word once you have sorted it. Next, complete the 'ee' spelling activities for today (also in this booklet).
Red Group - This week you are continuing to develop your understanding of spelling CVC words. You'll notice that I'm starting to mix up the medial sounds in your new booklet. Stretch the words out when you are saying them so that you can hear the sounds clearly.
- Number facts
We don't normally practise number facts on the last full week of term but, if you wish, (Blue and Green Groups) you can practise x10 tables or (Purple and Red Group) you can practise making 12.
- Numeracy - Time
Squares and Rectangles - Today you are completing ordering activities and putting three times in order starting with the earliest time. Write the time underneath each clock first, then order the times. There's a word search for you to complete at the end of your booklet with some months of the year and days of the week to be found. Enjoy!
Triangles - I hope that you have nearly completed the quarter to activities in your booklet. Could you ask a grown to call out o'clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to times for you to show on your paper clock? It's important that you know these times before you learn about the 5 minute intervals on the clock in Year 4. Complete the quarter to activities in your booklet.
Circles - You have been working on o'clock and half past. I hope that you've got a good understanding of these. Could a grown up call out times for you to show on the clock? It's really important that you have a good understanding of these times before moving on. Complete the half past activities in your booklet.
- Purple Mash - Numeracy
Squares and Rectangles - You are focusing on x10 tables this week. Log in to Purple Mash. Click on 'Mathematics', then under 'Times Tables' click on '2Simple Table Toons'. You can choose the folk singer, gospel singer, robot or rock singer to sing the x10 tables to you! Enjoy!! Lots of great work on x2 last week but if you need to practise the x2 tables, you can click on the x2 video of the gospel, opera, robot or rock singer!
I've set some alerts for you. Complete the x2 and x10 'Recall game' first. Then complete the 'Mulitplication' 2Do. Try to be as accurate as you can. I've sent a x10 'Multiplcation' 2Do for you for later in the week to see how you are managing x10 tables.
Triangles and Circles - Your activity is the Bond Bubbles game. Try to be as accurate as you can. Remember you can have several goes at the game and see if you can improve your score.

In your Summer Homework pack I mentioned the Libraries NI 'Big Summer Read'. Click here or on the picture 'Silly Squad' picture to sign up to this summer's 'Reading Challenge'. It's a digital challenge this year and a great way to encourages the children to read during the summer.
Have a great day Year 3!

Friday 19th June
Hello everyone! I hope that you are keeping well. Are you enjoying Science Week? It's the last day already! I hope that you have found it interesting to learn about forces. Now you know how they can change objects and are involved in making objects move. I've another activity for you today! Keep reading!
Today we will focus on:
Spellings and Number Facts Test
I hope that you have been working hard on your spellings and tables / number facts so that you're ready for your Friday Test.
Literacy - Comprehension
Blue, Green and Purple Groups - Today we are reading and understanding a comprehension called 'A Letter to New Zealand'. Before you begin, could you find a map or globe to see if you can find out where New Zealand is and think about why someone might want to send a letter to New Zealand. Do you know anyone who lives in New Zealand? The comprehension text is a recount. You've written recounts during your independent writing tasks and have been writing recounts recently. This recount tells us about the journey of a letter to New Zealand. Read the text a couple of times and complete the activity.
Lexia Group - 20 minutes of Lexia.
Numeracy - Handling Data
Today we are all learning about bar graphs. We've completed some activities on bar graphs already in Year 3 so this should be a revision task today.
All groups - The first activity asks you to collect the data first (page 25). How many dogs, cats and fish can you see? Show this information in the bag graph underneath. The next activity is the tricky bit. How many more dogs than cats? How many dogs take away number of cats.
Squares, Rectangles and Triangles - Complete the next two pages of bar graph activities. Collect the data and record using the table. On the third page of bar graphs, you are showing that you can understand a bar graph. Read the graph carefully and show your understanding.
Purple Mash - Art
Today's challenge is to decorate a present. Be as creative as you can!
Art - Fathers' Day - Sunday 21st June
Remember that it's Fathers' Day on Sunday and a great opportunity to show Dads and Grandads how special they are. Did you see the Fathers' Day craft in the previous pack? I gave it to you a little early to give you time to make it. I hope that you have had fun making the craft and enjoy sharing it with someone very special on Sunday.
Let's Celebrate - Memory Book
There is a Memory Book in your last pack. This is an independent task for you to complete. Draw and write about the memories you have of the various events in your seven years to date. Be creative with your drawing and try to write a sentence about each memory. Remember capital letters, punctuation and adjectives to make your sentences more interesting.
Science Week / STEM
Were you able to make a chair or bed yesterday with a piece or two pieces of paper? Was it able to hold a glue stick. By folding a piece of paper, we are able to create a structure that holds the glue stick up off the table and add strength to the paper. By changing the shape of the paper and adding folds, we can make the paper stronger.
Your final Science Week task is to make a paper aeroplane. I've included a picture here showing how to make an aeroplane but there are lots of ways. You could make one using the instructions here or do your own research to find another way to make the plane. When you've finished you can decorate and test your aeroplane. Hopefully you will discover that folds make the page more aerodynamic. Once you've made your plane, can you finds ways to make your plane fly further?
I hope that you've enjoyed our Science Week / STEM activities. I love Science Week and have missed enjoying these activities with you in our classroom. If you can, send a photo of your experiments to the school email to share with our class. We'd love to see them.
Well done for all the learning you have done this week. Take a minute to tell a grown up what you have learned this week. Here's a few things to get you started!
- 'j/g' sound / ng and qu / CVC spellings.
- How to understand and work out time problems.
- x2 tables or 11- number facts.
- Apostrophe for omission e.g. it's, can't, here's / using I to refer to yourself / phonics on Lexia.
- Calculate sale prices if you know the discount amount / adding 1p and 2p coins.
..... and there's a lot more! That's only some of the learning from Monday and Tuesday! Well done, Year 3!
Have a great weekend and see you back here on Monday. Let's make the last full week of learning a great one.

Thursday 18th June
Good morning Year 3. It feels like such a long time since I last said that to you in our classroom. Well done for moving forward with your learning at home.
I hope that you had fun doing the Mashcam activity yesterday. I enjoyed reading your stories. There's still time to complete the task if you haven't had a chance yet.
Today we will focus on:
- Numeracy - Number
Squares and Rectangles - Well done to everyone who has completed the multiplying by 2 activity on Purple Mash. Great answers and great accuracy. Today we are going to focus on multiplying by 10. Think of the Multilink cubes that we use in class. Can you imagine a tower of 10 cubes. 1 set of 10 cubes. That's 1 x 10. How many cubes do you have altogether? That's right, 10. If you have 2 towers of 10 cubes, how many cubes would you have altogether? That's right, 20. Continue with this until you get to 100 (10x10). Use the picture to help. There are some activities in your new pack to help you to understand x10. When you think you understand x10, you could return to the multiplying games we played last week.
You can play these games to work on x10 tables.
- Maths Magician - Type your name in the box, click on x10 and then click on Start.
- Hit the Button - Click on Times Tables and then on x10.
Triangles and Circles - You're all working within 10 or 20. Once you've complete your work you could play Hit the button. This week, click on Doubles and then Doubles to 10.
- Literacy - Reading
Enjoy some time with a book of your choice today. Do you like finding somewhere quiet to read or reading with someone in your family? Have fun!
Blue, Green and Purple Groups - If you would like to begin your comprehension today, it's called 'A Letter from New Zealand'. Read the recount carefully and use the guidance material in your pack to help you.
Science Week / STEM
Yesterday we made a helicopter using paper / card and a paper clip. I hope that you had lots of fun! What did you notice? Did the helicopter fall to the ground when you let it go? Why did that happen? Have you heard of the word 'gravity'? Gravity is the force that makes objects fall towards the ground. Click here to watch a video about gravity. You'll learn more about gravity in the future.
On Tuesday we discovered that forces can change the shape of play dough. Yesterday we discovered that forces can make objects move (fall). What will you discover today?
Challenge: Today I'd like you to make a chair or bed using 1 or 2 pieces of A4 paper. It needs to be strong enough to hold the weight of a glue stick. Clue: Folds make paper stronger.
Have a great day, boys and girls,

Wednesday 17th June
Hello Year 3. I hope to see lots of you on Purple Mash today. We are thinking about a favourite memory in connection with our 'Let's Celebrate' topic. Today's activity is a Mashcam where you get to pretend to be Santa! Think about Christmas time! Do you have a favourite memory?
Today we will be focusing on:
- Literacy - Independent Writing
Our piece of writing today is all about a favourite memory from Christmas. Can you retell a story from Christmas time? A special memory which makes you smile! Why was it special? What did you do?
Blue and Green Groups - Remember to use our grammar from yesterday. If you write a short version / a contraction like it's or can't, remember to use an apostrophe.
Purple Group - Remember that you need to write capital 'I' if you are writing about yourself.
Try to include details to help to explain why the memory is so special and to make your recount writing enjoyable to read.
- Purple Mash
Today you are pretending to be Santa as you write about your Christmas memory. Take a photo of yourself for the Mashcam, if you can. Then type out your story in the speech bubble. I can't wait to read about your memories.

- Numeracy - Measure - Capacity
Squares, Rectangles and Triangles - Today we are learning about capacity. Capacity is the term we use when measuring how much liquid fits in a container. We use measuring jugs in Year 3 to measure capacity. We start by measuring in litres. In our kitchen we have a measuring jug like the one in the photo. Our measuring jug holds 1/2 litre. So if I fill it twice, I can measure 1 litre of water. Do you have a measuring jug? It will be helpful today. Could you measure one litre of water so that you can see what it looks like? Now complete the tasks on pages 15 and 16 of your workbook. Compare a litre of water to: a drawer in the kitchen, a mug, a jar, a canister, a bottle and the sink. Then estimate the capacity of the items at the bottom of the page before using a measuring jug to see if you're right! Try to be careful not to make a mess!!! Finally, complete the activities which involve adding litres together. Circles - Today we are learning about the 3D shape called a sphere. Look at your workbook to find out what a sphere looks like. A sphere is the shape of a ball. Can you find spheres in your house and complete the shape activity in your workbook? |

Yesterday you used a piece of Plasticine or Blu Tack and applied forces to it using the forces cube. What did you notice? Did you notice that every time you applied one of the forces, the play dough changed shape?
Today's Challenge: Can you make a helicopter with a piece of card / paper and a paper clip?
Your challenge is to make a helicopter using the instructions in the picture below.
When you've made the helicopter, hold it up high and notice what happens. Can you describe what happens to an adult?

Tuesday 16th June
Good morning everyone. I hope that you have enjoyed getting your new pack and your work from earlier in the year. See note above re new packs. If you brought two red folders home, please return the extra one to school.
Today we will focus on:
- Numeracy - Money
Squares, Rectangles and Triangles - Today we will focus on discount. Sometimes the price of an item in a shop may be discounted by a certain amount and it's helpful to be able to work out the new cost mentally. The items on your task today have been discounted by 13p. Subtract 13p mentally by subtracting 10p then subtracting 3p. Accuracy is very important, as always.
Circles - We are continuing to work on using 1p and 2p. Remember to have some fun with real money as well as completing your task.
All groups - Have a look at the photograph of the money shield. See if you can watch out for the coins needed to make the shield.
- Literacy - Grammar
Blue and Green Groups - Today you are learning about the apostrophe ('). We've already talked about this in school. Remember that the apostrophe can be used for omission e.g. isn't is short for is not, we've is short for we have.
Purple Group - Today we are learning about how 'I' is capital when we are writing about ourselves.
Lexia Group - Spend 20 minutes working on Lexia.
- Science Week / STEM
Forces
In your new pack you'll have noticed a cube net with the words 'push', 'pull', 'roll', 'twist', 'stretch' and 'squash'.
Cut round the outside of the net and make a cube or dice. Do you have play dough, Plasticine or Blu Tack? Roll the cube and see which force it lands on. Apply that force to your play dough. What happens when each force is applied to it? We'll talk about what happens on the class page tomorrow.
Have you had a look at the Science Week leaflet in your new pack? Which experiment would you like to try?
Tomorrow you are going to be writing about favourite memories. I'd like you to focus on memories from Christmas (instead of birthday as written in pack). Your Purple Mash activity allows you to pretend to be Santa as you write about your memories. Use the writing frame to help you. Enjoy thinking back to your memories of Christmas.
I hope you have a good day.

Monday 15th June
Hello girls and boys. I hope that you've enjoyed the weekend. The new packs are available for collection today. There's also a summer homework pack for you to use when getting ready for Year 4. Last week, Laura, Jennifer and I gathered up all your school work that was in our classroom. We were getting it ready for your parents to collect. We were a little bit sad by the time we'd finished (maybe a big bit!) but it was lovely to remind ourselves of activities you'd done during the year.
Today we will focus on:
- Literacy - Phonics
Blue and Green Groups - Today you are learning about the j/g sound. We'll learn about three ways it can be written - j, g or ge. Complete your Phonics Booklet and spellings activity. Just one sound today!
Purple Group - Today you are working on 'ng' and 'qu'. These are the last sounds of this stage. Well done everyone! Complete your Phonics Booklet and spellings activity.
Red Group - Today you are working on CVC words from the new booklet in your last pack. We are going to revise the medial sounds you've covered (a, o, i, u and e). Stretch the words out to hear all the sounds.
Lexia Group - 20 minutes of Lexia.
- Numeracy - Time
Squares and Rectangles - Today you are completing problems relating to time. Read the problems carefully and underline the important details.
Triangles - Today you are reinforcing your understanding of quarter to. Use your paper clock to practise times you already know, just like we do in class. You could ask someone to call out times for you.
Circles - Today you are reinforcing your understanding of half past. Use your paper clock to practise o'clock and half past. You could also ask someone to call out times for you.
- Numeracy - Number Facts
Squares and Rectangles - You are working on multiplying by 2 this week. Try to practise these tables with someone. It's important to be able to say the answers quickly. I hope that you enjoyed the times tables games last week. Have another go at them, if you can. Your Purple Mash game today is also about the x2 tables. I would like you to know these tables really well!
Triangles and Circles - You are taking away from 11 this week. Remember that your knowledge of how to make 11 from last week will help you this week.
Purple Mash - Numeracy
Log into Purple Mash to access the Numeracy activity for your group. Have fun!
Science Week / STEM
Did you get your new pack today? The pack contains some Science Week and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) materials. We normally have a Science Week during the month of June in Year 3 and complete STEM activities earlier in the year. We'll put these together this week. Find the Science Week leaflet in your pack and try to plan to do at least one of the experiments. From tomorrow, I'll post an activity each day that the children can have a go at if they can. Send in photos if you would like to share your Science with us!
There are a few little treats in your new pack for you. Enjoy!

Friday 12th June
It's Friday! Can you believe it? In your pack you've probably noticed the party hat template. When you finish your work today, you could design a party hat for a celebration of your choice. Be as creative as you can! Maybe send in a photo. I'd love to see it.
Super 'My Favourite Birthday' recounts sent in through Purple Mash. Well done to Harrison, Nathan, Niamh, Ella-Rose, Reuben, Ross, Zach, Gemma, Eva and Joel who have already sent theirs in. I really enjoyed hearing about your celebrations. There's still time to get yours in, if you haven't been able to do it yet.
Today we will focus on:
- Spellings and Number Facts Test
You know what to do! Try your best!
- Literacy - Comprehension
Blue, Green and Purple Group - Today our comprehension is called 'If'. Read the poem and answer the questions with full sentences and remember to use punctuation. These comprehensions are becoming more difficult but I hope that you are able to take on the challenge. There's a guidance sheet in the pack to help you.
Lexia Group - 20 minutes on Lexia.
- Numeracy - Number
Squares and Rectangles - Today you are completing the multiplying by 2 activities. When you have completed the written work, could you write out the x 2 tables using the picture to the right to help you. See if you can write the answers by yourself and then check to see if you are right!
When you think you know the tables, you can play games to check that you know them well.
- Maths Magician is good fun! Type your name in the box, click on x2 and then click on Start.
- Hit the Button is fun too! Click on Times Tables and then on x2. Off you go!
Triangles and Circles - You're all working within 10 or 20. Once you've complete your work you could play Hit the button. Click on Number Bonds and have fun!
Purple Mash - Art
Today your Purple Mash activity it to design an outfit for a celebration. Drag the labels to each clothing item. Time to be creative. Enjoy!
Art - Party Hat
As I mentioned above, you have a party hat template in your folder. Can you decorate the hat for a particular celebration? Once you've done that, cut it out and glue it together. Hope you enjoy being creative.
Have a great day, everyone! I hope you have a lovely weekend and see the post above for details about collection of the last pack, summer homework and school work.

Thursday 11th June
Hello everyone. It's been great to see some new jokes on our class blog. Thank you Zach, Georgia, Ross, Eva, Gemma, Isabella, Joel and Ella-Rose. Your jokes made me laugh. I've enjoyed reading your posts about having fun with your family, doing exercise and being creative. If you get a change, put up a post on the blog. It would be great to hear from you.
Today we are focusing on:
- Numeracy - Number
Squares and Rectangles - Today we are beginning to learn about multiplying. When we multiply by 2 ( __x2), we are doubling a number e.g. 4x2 = __ is the same as 4+4= __ . There are some activities in your pack to work on today and tomorrow to help you to understand x2 tables. Click here to watch some short BBC Bitesize videos to help you understand. There's an activity too.
Triangles and Rectangles - Today you are continuing to work on your understanding of number. Your two groups have now become four! Some of you are working on the number story of 5, there's a group using and applying skills within 20, a group is adding within 10 and a group subtracting from 14 and 15. You're all working well. Super!
- Literacy - Reading
Today we focus on enjoying reading. In a few weeks time we are going to be writing a book review so think about a book that you have enjoyed reading. Would you recommend it to a friend? We didn't get to finish reading our class novel 'Fantastic Mr Fox' in school. If you're looking for a book for an adult to read to you, there's an idea. You might even be able to read some parts by yourself!
Some of you have started to do part of your comprehension task on a Thursday. Our comprehension is about a classic poem called 'If'. Maybe you'll complete section 1 today. See what you would like to do. Remember there's guidance material in the pack to help you.
I hope you have a lovely day.

Wednesday 10th June
Good morning boys and girls. I'm wondering if you have any new jokes to share. Please share them on our blog. Also, is there an activity that you've enjoyed doing with your family. Could you share it on the blog under the 'Fun with Family' post. Great to share ideas with each other. The blog has been quite quiet for the last week or so. It's important to keep in touch. I miss seeing you in school and love to read your posts on the blog.
Today we will focus on:
- Literacy - Independent Writing
Today we are thinking about our birthdays. Your birthday is a very special day for you and your family. A celebration of the day when you were born and of the age that you have become. You are all 7 years old now. Very exciting. Think back to the birthdays that you can remember. Which one was you favourite? When was it celebrated? How was it celebrated? Why is it your favourite? I will be looking forward to reading about your celebrations. *Remember to (all groups) use punctuation accurately, (Purple Group) begin days of the week with a capital letter and (Blue and Green Groups) use adjectives.
- Purple Mash
When you've written you 'My Favourite Birthday' piece in your My Own Writing book, log in to Purple Mash to access today's 'Alerts'. Type up your piece of writing. Blue, Green and Purple Groups, you may want to improve your writing and make changes when you are typing it. Editing is an important skill. I look forward to 'Alerts' coming through to my computer!
- Numeracy - Measure - Weight / Shape
Squares, Rectangles and Triangles - Today we are learning about 1 kilogram and 1/2 kilogram. Can you find something in your house that weighs 1 kilogram and something that weighs 1/2 kilogram (500 grams)? We'll use these as our weights. Maybe a full bag of flour, bag of sugar, box of cereal, pasta or butter. Check the cupboards and read the labels. It needs to be a full container of the food. Now find 4 objects for comparison. Label them blue, yellow, red and green. Compare them to the kilogram and 1/2 kilogram weights (Complete SMDH page 13). Use both hands to compare e.g.lift the blue object in one hand and the kilogram object in the other hand. Which feels heavier? Complete page 14 to become familiar with weighing using scales. Record answers to the nearest kilogram.
Circles - Today we are learning about cuboids. Can you find out what a cuboid is using your 'My Shape Booklet' and then show an adult some of the cuboids in your house? You could send me a photograph of the cuboids you find.
I hope that you enjoy finding out about kilograms and 1/2 kilograms. Also, thinking about your birthdays and the special celebrations you've had. I'll look forward to reading your finished writing.

Today we are focusing on:
- Numeracy - Money Squares, Rectangles and Triangles - Today we are thinking about subtracting. You are taking 20p away from each amount. Remember to write down the amounts carefully, as in the picture. Also, when doing tens and units, always start with the units. Circles - We are continuing to work on using 1p and 2p. Try making some amounts of money using real coins. Maybe an adult could give you some 1ps and 2ps and you could add them together. - Literacy - Grammar Blue and Green Groups - Today we are continuing think about adjectives by expanding noun phrases. Remember that adjectives are words that describe nouns. Purple Group - Today we are thinking about capital letters being used to start the days of the week. Lexia Group - 20 minutes of Lexia time. Keep accessing Lexia to make progress with your learning. |

Tomorrow you're going to write about your favourite birthday. Think about the birthdays you've celebrated so far. Everyone in our class is 7 now. Was your favourite birthday your 7th birthday or a different birthday? Discuss the celebrations with someone in your family. What do they remember? Is there a funny story you could recount? When was it celebrated? How did you celebrate? Why is it your favourite birthday? Birthdays are very special. Enjoy remembering your celebrations.

Monday 8th June
Hello everyone. I hope that you had a lovely weekend with your family. Are you ready to begin a new week of challenges? Parents, I hope you are too! You're doing great work at home. Keep it up!
I hope that you are enjoying the activities linked to our 'Let's Celebrate' topic. Did you get a chance to make some bunting on Friday? I hope you enjoyed using your art skills.
Today we will focus on:
Literacy - Phonics
Blue and Green Groups - Today we will work on two sounds again. Our main sound for the week is 't' but we'll also learn about the 'n=kn' sound. Complete your activities in your Phonics Booklet as well as your spellings. I hope that you're doing well in your Friday test. Try to work on the spellings each day so that they are really secure in your memory. The 't' sound can be written 't', 'tt' and 'ed'. There are more ways that this sound can be written and you'll learn about those in Year 4. The 'n=kn' sound can be written 'n' or 'kn'.
Purple Group - Today we are working on the double letter sounds 'sh', 'ch' and 'th'. Can you think of words that begin with these sounds. Find a spare piece of paper and write them down under the headings 'sh', 'ch' and 'th'. How many can you think of? You could send me a photograph of your words, if you like. Now that you've completed the brainstorm, complete the activity in your Phonics Booklet and your spelling activity too.
Red Group - Today we continue to work of words that have middle sound 'e'. We're focusing on words ending with '_eg' today. Can you think of any words that rhyme with leg. Can you try to write them down by yourself on a spare piece of paper? You can send me a photograph of your words, if you like. How many did you think of? Complete your spelling activity.
Lexia Group - 20 minutes of Lexia.
- Purple Mash
I've set a different phonics game for all the groups, as usual. Log in to Purple Mash to click on your 'Alert'.
- Numeracy - Time
Squares and Rectangles - Today we are thinking about passing time in our Numeracy. We are focusing on 1 hour before and 1 hour after. If I showed you 9 o'clock on your paper clock, could you move the hands on the clock to show me what time it was an hour earlier? That's right, 8 o'clock. If I show you 9 o'clock again and asked you what time it will be 1 hour later, could you show me the answer? That's right, 10 o'clock. Do a few more of these with an adult. In your Time Booklet you are going to complete two pages about passing time. Use your paper clock to make each time and to find the answer. If you think it's tricky, go back to practising on your paper clock until you understand what to do.
Triangles - Practise making o'clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to with an adult. Keep working through your Time Booklet to reinforce quarter past and quarter to. (We'll leave SMDH - Page 19 to another time.)
Circles - Can you practise making o'clock and half past times on your paper clock? Complete the next page in your booklet.
- Number Facts
Blue and Green Groups - List 33 - Number doubles - Practise 0+0 to 10+10 as well as those on List 33.
Purple and Red Groups - List 9 - The story of 11 - Adding to make 11.
I hope that you have a great day and make progress with your learning. Well done, everyone! You're doing a great job.

Friday 5th June
Good morning! I'm sure you are glad that it's Friday! I hope you have a good day moving forward with your learning and then a lovely weekend. There's a craft for you in your pack linked to our 'Let's Celebrate' topic. I'll tell you about it later but it's for you to enjoy as a well done for getting your work done this week. There's a topic craft in your pack for next Friday too! Making a celebration hat! I hope you have also enjoyed the little treats in your packs! They are to say well done too!
I have really enjoyed reading you 'Achieving Goals' pieces. Wow! Well done everyone! You've lots to celebrate and you know what you need to do to achieve your next goal. Great writing, use of punctuation, content and great adjectives too. (You know that I like to see you use our grammar skills in your writing.) Great writing Ross, Harrison, Zach, Isabella, Niamh, Gemma, Ben, Eva and Joel. If you haven't had a change to do it yet, there's still time!
We're using our technology a lot more at the moment and it's important that we use it safely. At Year 3 stage, pupils are often using devices with supervision but it's important at this stage to teach the children how to stay safe. As they become more independent, this is more important. We use the 'Think You Know' website in school and there are activities available for teaching children at home about online safety. Click on the website image to access the resources.

Have a look at your spellings and number facts for this week. Are there any tricky ones you'd like to practise? Now it's time for your Friday Test. Do your best!
- Literacy - Comprehension
Our activity is called 'Mountain Mona'. This is an example of a contemporary tale. Read it carefully two or three times and then show your understanding by answering the questions. Remember there's a guidance sheet in the pack.
Lexia Group - 20 minutes of learning on Lexia. Well done to those pupils who have just completed a level! You know who you are!
- Numeracy - Number
Squares and Rectangles - You have a task to show your understanding again today. You know what to do! Today it's out of 30.
Triangles and Circles - You are working on your number booklet and following on from yesterday's learning. Keep up the hard work.
- Purple Mash - Art
Today you are designing a vehicle. It could be a vehicle to take you to a celebration of your choice. Be as creative as you can. Watch what happens to the net and 3D vehicle as you add details. I'll be looking forward to the 'Alerts' on my computer tomorrow!
- Art - Topic - Let's Celebrate
Have you found some paper in your pack with triangles printed onto it? I'd like you to make some bunting for a celebration of your choice. Decorate the triangles, cut them out, attach them onto a piece of string, ribbon or wool and hang it up somewhere, if you can! You can make extra triangles if you need to by using blank paper and by drawing round one of the triangles. Send in a photo of your bunting, if you can. I would really like to see your art. Some of you have celebrated birthdays while we've been off school. Beth, Jack (C), Jack (H) and Rio are all now 7 years old. I hope you enjoyed your special birthday.
Have a lovely weekend everyone. See you back here on Monday!

- Friday Test - Spellings and Number Facts Test
Have a look at your spellings and number facts for this week. Are there any tricky ones you'd like to practise? Now it's time for your Friday Test. Do your best!
- Literacy - Comprehension
Our activity is called 'Mountain Mona'. This is an example of a contemporary tale. Read it carefully two or three times and then show your understanding by answering the questions. Remember there's a guidance sheet in the pack.

Thursday 4th June
I hope that you are all well. I have really enjoyed catching up with most of you on the phone. Hopefully I'll get chatting to everyone else tomorrow. Great to hear you're keeping well and moving forward with your learning. Well done! Today we will focus on: - Numeracy - Number Square and Rectangles - Today you are completing a subtraction task. Just like last week, can you find somewhere quiet place to complete this independently. Remember that you can use a 100 square if you need it. Today's task is out of 19. Focus on trying to be as accurate as you can. If there's something you're not sure about, try and get an adult to go over it with you. Triangles and Circles - You're all working away at different activities. One group is subtracting from 12 (page 27), one group is adding with 20 (page 13), one group is adding within 10 (page 1) and one group is working on the story of 4. You'll all doing really well. Keep it up! - Literacy - Reading Today we will focus on reading. If you're finding comprehension a bit challenging, you could do section 1 on Thursdays to split it over two days. It's up to you. We've talked about Oxford Owl on our class page previously. Some of you mentioned on the phone that you needed more books to read and we talked about the resources available when using this website. Click here for the Oxford Owl for Home website to access books. Remember that this is an English website so resources for our class are labelled 'Year 2'. There's plenty to choose from! I hope you really enjoy reading some new books. Time to get started! Off you go! Mrs Irvine |

Wednesday 3rd June
Hello everyone! It's been great to see lots of you continuing to log on and complete tasks on Purple Mash. I love to see 'Alerts' when I log in! Great jokes on the blog this week. I shared them with my family and they made us all laugh! Thank you!
Today we will focus on:
- Literacy - Independent Writing
Today we are going to write about achieving goals. I hope that you've had some time to think about this. It's easier to complete a writing task if you've taken some time to think about the topic first. Use the writing frame, from the writing frame booklet in your first pack, to write about your achievements and to write about goals that you'd like to achieve. I will be looking forward to reading your pieces of work. Remember to use punctuation accurately, form sentences with good structure and see if you can include adjectives in your writing. I hope you now know what an adjective is having completed yesterday's grammar activity and see that adjectives can make our stories more interesting. It's important to use our grammar learning to help us to improve our writing.
- Purple Mash
After writing your piece about achieving goals, log in to Purple Mash to type out your piece of writing and hand it in to me. I can't wait to read your work.
- Numeracy - Measure / Shape
Squares, Rectangles and Triangles - Today you are finding the weight of some objects. In school we would use balances but maybe you could use kitchen scales with the help of an adult. Find something that you have lots of to compare the weight. (In school we use multi-link cubes.) Each one needs to be the same. e.g. Lego pieces that are exactly the same, marbles (although they'll roll!), teaspoons or pieces for a board game. Something that isn't heavy but they all need to be the same. Weigh a pen, record the weight and then see how many Lego pieces (roughly) have the same weight. When you've weighed the four item, use this information to complete the comparison task at the bottom of the page.
Circles - Today we are learning about the cylinder. Have a look at the next page in your booklet to see what a cylinder looks like. Can you find any cylinders in your house? A tin of beans, coffee jar, a tube of Pringles, Smarties? I'm sure you can find more! Could you send me a photograph of the cylinders you find? Send it to the school email address, if you can.
Have a good day celebrating your achievements in your writing. There's so much you can do that you weren't able to do when you were 5 years old! Lots of achievements! Maybe you've learned to do something during lockdown. I'd like to read about that too! Let's celebrate your achievements!

Tuesday 2nd June
Good morning. Great to see that lots of pupils are completing the phonics games accurately. Well done! I also enjoyed seeing the art from last week. Great party poppers, Joel, Amelie, Ella-Rose, Gemma, Niamh, Nathan, Zach, Ross and Georgia! That task is still available if you haven't had a chance yet.
Today we are focusing on:
- Numeracy - Money
Squares, Rectangles and Triangles- Today you are completing a change activity and a problem solving activity. When completing problems, underline or highlight the important details.
e.g. Jane had 20p to spend. She spent 9p on a pencil and 5p on a rubber. How much change did she get from 20p? Reading carefully and accurate working out are very important.
Circles - Continue to work through your booklet and try to make amounts of money, practically, using coins too.
- Literacy - Grammar
Blue and Green Groups - Today we are learning about adjectives. Remember that an adjective is a word that describes a noun. Click here to watch a video about a scary yeti (it's not very scary!) and there's a quiz to check your understanding too. The word 'scary' is an adjective as yeti is a noun. So scary (adjective) describes the yeti (noun). We can use adjectives in our independent writing to make it more interesting and to add description. I'll be looking out for adjectives in your writing tomorrow and from now on!
Purple Group - Today we are learning about capital letters and how we use a capital letter at the start of place names. Think of Dromara, Banbridge, Lisburn...
Lexia Group - 20 minutes on Lexia.
Tomorrow the independent writing task is called 'Achieving Goals'. What are you able to do? Have you been practising something and now you've got it? I'd like to read about this! Is there a skill that you haven't quite mastered? How are you going to get it? Tomorrow you are going to write about your achievements and what you'd like to achieve. Have a think about this today to get ready for your writing tomorrow.
Hope you're enjoying this lovely weather.

- Purple Mash
Our focus today:
- Literacy - Phonics
Blue and Green Groups - Today we're thinking about two new sounds, 's' and 'k'. We'll focus on 's' when working on spelling. Remember that we are continuing to learn that these sounds can be represented (written) in different ways. 's' can be written 's', 'ss', or 'ce' and 'k' can be written 'k', 'c' and 'ck'. We don't cover all the representations for these sounds in Year 3. You'll develop this knowledge next year in Year 4. Complete your scaffolded text and word sort activities in your Phonics Booklet as well as the spelling activities in your smaller booklet.
Purple Group - Today we're focusing on double letters 'ff', 'll', 'ss', 'tt' and 'zz'. Just like last week's sounds, these sounds are represented by two letters. Complete the activity in your Phonics Booklet and your spelling activities in your smaller booklet.
Red Group - Today we're continuing to work on words where the middle sound is 'e' and we're focusing on words ending with '_ed'. Complete your activities to reinforce this sound.
Purple Mash - Literacy
Today the activity is a phonics game linked to your group's sounds work. Great to see lots of pupils completing the activity and scoring well too.
- Numeracy - Time
Squares and Rectangles - Today we're reinforcing your understanding of quarter intervals and 5/10 past.
Triangles - Today you're working on quarter past or quarter to.
Circles - Today you're working on o'clock or half past.
- Number Facts
Blue and Green Groups - List 32 - Subtracting from 15.
Purple and Red Groups - List 8 - Subtracting from 10.
I hope you have a great day. Get your work done, do your best and get out to enjoy the sunshine!

Friday 28th May
So it's Friday and the next time I send you a message we will have begun the month of June. Can you believe it? I hope that you are enjoying the good weather. Maybe you try and get your school work done in the morning and get outside in the afternoon. It's important to get outside and have fun! Keep sending in your photos. It's great to see you!
I'm so impressed with the celebration reports that have been handed in so far for our literacy task this week. Well done to Georgia, Rylee, Ross, Harrison, Zach, Isabella, Niamh, Gemma, Ella-Rose, Ben, Eva and Joel.
Today we will focus on:
- Friday test - Spellings and Number Facts Test
Look over your spellings / number facts and then do your best.
- Literacy - Comprehension
Today's comprehension is called 'Gerbils'. Have you seen a gerbil or you know anyone who has one? I know that we have lots of animal lovers in Year 3. Today's task is based on a factual piece and it's written as a report. Notice the headings used. There's a guidance sheet in your pack to help.
Lexia Group - 20 minutes of Lexia. Well done to everyone who is logging in and using Lexia 3 times (20 minutes each) per week! Brilliant!
- Numeracy - Number
Squares and Rectangles - Complete the task on page 16 of your workbook. Try to do the same as yesterday. Complete the task without help and use a 100 square, if you need to. Today's score should be out of 37.
Triangles and Circles - you're working on your number workbook. Continue to follow the timetable in your pack.
- Purple Mash - Art
We're continuing to think about our topic of 'Let's Celebrate' today and your ICT / Art task is to design a party popper. Please remember to include a sentence at the bottom of your work.
I hope that you all have a lovely weekend.

Thursday 27th May
Hello everyone. I hope that you are keeping well. You shared great jokes when we first set up our class blog. There's a new post on the blog for you to share jokes. Can you think of a joke that would make us laugh?
Today we will focus on:
- Numeracy - Number
Squares and Rectangles - Today you are completing a task which covers skills you've been developing in Year 3. Try to complete this task without any help (use your 100 square , if you need it) and ask an adult to mark it for you. Try to be as accurate as you can. You should get a mark out of 25. Have another go at any that you found tricky and make up a few of your own too.
Triangles and Circles - Today you are either focusing on subtracting from 11, making 16, 17, 18 and 19, adding within 10 or making 3.
- Literacy - Reading
Find some time to enjoy reading today. Are you enjoying a good book? Let us know on the blog. Maybe you'll give one of our class an idea, especially if it's a book you've accessed digitally.
Have a good day.

Wednesday 26th May
Good morning everyone. I hope that you are enjoying the good weather.
Today we will focus on:
- Literacy - Independent Writing
We are going to write a report about a celebration of your choice today. Firstly, can you research a celebration that you don't know about yet? Find out when it is celebrated, where it is celebrated, who celebrates and why it's celebrated. Use the writing frame from the writing frame set contained in the first pack. Writing a report is quite new for us. Remember to use headings and to underline each heading. Try to include as much detail as you can. Remember to use punctuation and add detail to your sentences to make them more interesting.
- Purple Mash
Once you have written your report, log in to Purple Mash and access today's 2Do. You will be able to type your report and hand it in. I'll look forward to reading your reports.
- Numeracy - Measure
Squares, Rectangles and Triangles - We are continuing to learn about centimetres. Before you begin today's task, find a ruler and remind yourself of how long a centimetre is. Today we are estimating and measuring using centimetres. Estimate the length of the flower, bird etc. Then measure to see how accurate you were. Can you draw a 9 cm (centimetre) worm. Measure your worm to see if you were close!
Circles - We are learning about the 3D shape, a cube, today. A cube has 6 faces. They are all square shaped. Think of a dice. Can you find any cubes in your home. Complete the cube activity in your booklet.
I hope that you have a good day. I'll be looking forward to seeing 'Alerts' on my Purple Mash.

Tuesday 26th May
I hope that you enjoyed the Bank Holiday weekend with your family. The weather was lovely. Coming up soon on the blog will be a new jokes post as our first one was so popular. I hope the jokes made you laugh although just reading your posts makes me smile! I really enjoy hearing from you.
Our focus for today:
-Literacy - Phonics
Blue and Green Groups - This week we are learning about the 'oy' sound.
Purple Group - We have finished with the blends we planned to cover. We are continuing to work on sounds that are written with two letters. This week we will focus on 'ar' and 'ck'. A single sound represented by two letters. e.g. far f-ar. The word 'far' just contains two sounds but is written with three letters. Back to your Phonics Booklet for activities for these sounds.
Red Group - This week we continue to learn about words with 'e' as the middle sound. We're focusing on '_en' this week. Ben, den, hen....
-Literacy - Grammar
Blue and Green Groups - You are learning about a type of sentence called a command. A sentence that tells someone what to do.
Purple Group - You are focusing on using capital letters at the start of a person's name. Remember, you know that every time you write your name, you start with a capital letter and we do that for other people's names too.
Lexia Group - 20 minutes of Lexia time. Great to hear about pupils who are regularly using Lexia.
-Numeracy - Money
Squares, Rectangles and Triangles - We are making amounts of money using the fewest number of coins. Now that we are getting more proficient with money, we need to develop our skills.
Circles - We are working on making amounts of money and I hope that you are finding these activities are a good challenge.
You could have another go at the Toy Shop game to see if you can get a better score. If you get 10/10, challenge yourself by trying the next level. Click on the Toy Shop Money game picture to play the game.
Number Facts -
Blue Group - Making 15 by adding two numbers together.
Red Group - Making 10 by adding two numbers together.
-Purple Mash - Literacy
Go to Purple Mash to access the 2Do for your group. It's a phonics activity today. Have fun!
Have a good day everyone!

Good morning boys and girls. Lots of great work has been happening again this week. Well done! I've enjoyed reading the stories already handed in on Purple Mash. Great work Zach, Ross, Niamh, Nathan, Isabella, Harrison, Georgia, Gemma, Joel, Eva and Ben. I'm sure there are more stories to come and I'll be watching out for them. Keep it up!
It's Friday so that means it's time to test your spellings and number facts for this week. Do you're best!

Today we will focus on:
- Numeracy - Number Squares and Rectangles - Today you are learning about two concepts. First, learning about the position of numbers on a number line. Scroll down to the end of today's post to watch a video before completing the activity. The second activity is about rounding to the nearest ten. Mark each number on the number line and record which tens number it is closest to. e.g. 53 - mark it on the number line. It is closer to 50 than 60 so write 50 in the box. Click here or on the 'Rocket Rounding' picture to play a game to practise your skills. Choose 'Up to 99 to Nearest 10' and 'With Number Line' to begin with. If you're really accurate, have a go without the number line. For those who are ready for a challenge, try 'Up to 999 to Nearest 10' and 'With Number Line'. Have fun! |
|
Triangles - Your activity is either subtracting from a teens number or adding within 10. Have another go at one of our Purple Mash games to practise your skills.
Circles - Your activity is either making 14 and 15 or making 2. You could visit Purple Mash if you have time and try to get a better score in one of the Numeracy 2Dos.
- Literacy - Comprehension
Today's comprehension is called 'Seeing the World'. See pack for the guidance sheet to help.
Lexia Group - 20 minutes of Lexia.
- Purple Mash - Art
Today you're making a special certificate for someone special. Enjoy thinking about the special people who help you in your house and celebrating how they help you.
Monday is a Bank Holiday so I'll be back in touch here on Tuesday. Have fun and have a lovely weekend too!

Wednesday 20th May
Good morning everyone.
Today we are focusing on:
- Literacy - Independent Writing - 'Celebrating Difference'
Use the writing frame to write about activities that you like to do. What do you enjoy doing? Are there any activities that you do that are unusual? What makes you unique? Today in our writing we want to celebrate how we are all different and have different interests. Yesterday in our grammar work we were learning about exclamation marks. Can you use some in your writing today?
- Purple Mash - Go to Purple Mash to type the story you've written. I look forward to reading your story.
- Numeracy - Measure
Squares, Rectangles and Triangles - Today you are learning about centimetres. Find your ruler and find out how long a centimetre is. Compare the length of a centimetre with the width of your index (pointer) finger. Use your ruler to measure the items on page 10 of your Shape, Measure and Data Handling booklet. Then complete the estimate and measure activity further down the page. Can you find something that measures 14 centimetres?
Centimetre facts:
100 centimetres = 1 metre
cm is short for centimetres e.g. 5 cm is 5 centimetres
Circles - Today you are checking to see if you know all the 2D shapes. Complete the next activity in your Shape Booklet.
I'm looking forward to reading about your interests.
Have a good day.

Hello boys and girls. I hope that you are all keeping well.
Lots of great Numeracy work yesterday on Purple Mash. Great start to the week! Good to see that you're often getting a better score when you have another go at a Numeracy activity. Great to see improvement.
Today we will focus on:
- Numeracy - Time (Remember we swapped Time and Money yesterday.)
Squares and Rectangles - This week we are moving on to 5 and 10 past on the analogue clock. There are some sheets in your new pack to help you to understand this. Watch out for 5 and 10 past times on analogue clocks in your house. Complete the pages on 5 past and 10 past.
Triangles and Circles - Continue to work through your workbook.
- Literacy - Grammar
Blue, Green and Purple Groups - Today you are learning about exclamations and the exclamation mark. Exciting! Click here for a BBC Bitesize video on exclamation marks.
Lexia Group - Complete 20 minutes on Lexia.
Tomorrow our independent writing task is called 'Celebrating Difference'. Today I would like you to think about what you like to do. Think about hobbies, interests and sports you enjoy. Then, is there anything that makes you unique or are there any interests that you have that are unusual? Finally, why is it good to be different? Wouldn't it be boring if we were all exactly the same! What do you think? I'll be looking for exclamation marks in your writing since we are working on them today!
See you back here tomorrow!

Hello boys and girls. You've been very busy on Purple Mash this week. Great to see super story writing and lots of Numeracy activities completed. I'm delighted to see that some boys and girls have been having another go at Numeracy activities and getting better scores! Wonderful! It's an art activity today which I know you'll do well. Don't forget to write a sentence underneath your completed work.
Today we are focusing on:
- Numeracy - Number - Squares and Rectangles - Today you are finding numbers between. Read the instructions carefully. At the bottom of the page, use the number lines on the page to help you. Put a finger on the first and last numbers on the line (10 and 20) and walk your fingers in at both sides, one number at a time. Triangles and Circles - Today you are working on your individual tasks - subtracting from teens numbers (page 23), adding to make 12 (page 8), adding within 10 or the number 20.
- Literacy - Comprehension - 'Be a Snake Charmer' (Remember to use the information sheet in your pack) or Lexia (Have you completed 3x 20 minutes on Lexia this week?).
- Purple Mash - Design a party hat. Use the tools and colours to be creative. Write a sentence under you party hat to explain which celebration your party hat is for.
Have a good day and a lovely weekend.

Hello everyone! I hope that you are all well. I have really enjoyed reading all the 'My Favourite Celebration' work you have posted in Purple Mash already. Great research, memories and writing by Georgia, Ross, Harrison, Zach, Isabella, Niamh, Gemma, Ella-Rose, Eva and Joel. I'm sure there are more stories to come and I'll be watching out for them. Great use of capital letters, punctuation and of your research. I'm really impressed!
I hope you enjoyed estimating during your Numeracy activity yesterday, Squares, Rectangles and Triangles. Here are the answers! The window is 2 metres wide, the classroom is 8 metres wide, the classroom door is 2 metres high and the Assembly Hall is 11 metres wide. How did you get on? That was a hard challenge since we aren't in school at the moment.
Our focus for today is:
- Numeracy - Number - Squares and Rectangles - you are using your strategies to add amount and find change (Page 27). Triangles and Circles - you are working on your individual tasks. Some subtracting or adding or looking at the number 20.
- Literacy - Reading - Today it's all about taking time to read. Maybe you're enjoying reading a book or enjoying being read to. Maybe you're reading a book, an ebook or a book from a website. All good and helpful. Keep it up! Thank you to everyone who has shared books that they are reading on the blog. More suggestions on there today.
I'm making your new pack at the moment. See the note at the top of the class page for collection details.
That's all from me for now.

Hello Year 3. I hope you are having a good week. Thank you to Gemma and Ella-Rose for telling us about books they're enjoyed on our blog. Great to read about how Zach, Nathan, Georgia, Gemma and Ella-Rose have been keeping active at home. Well done everyone! Would be great to hear more ideas if you get an opportunity. I hope that you are continuing to remember that it's important to help at home doing jobs around the house and to have fun with your family.
Today we are focusing on:
- Literacy - writing about a celebration that you have researched. Use the writing frame to write your piece. Remember capital letters, use punctuation accurately and read your work to check it.
- Purple Mash - Go to Purple Mash to type your story and hand it in. I really look forward to reading your work. You're doing a great job!
- Numeracy - Square, Rectangles and Triangles Groups - Today we continue to think about 'a metre'. Can you remember how long a metre is? Stretch out your arms and check with a measuring tape to see if you're right! Can you estimate the length of the window in our classroom (the one at our Reading Area), the width of our classroom (from the Table Point Chart to the Reading Area), the height of the classroom door and the width of the hall (the shorter distance - not the length). Record the answers in your booklet. I'll post the answers tomorrow. Circles Group - You are learning about the rectangle today. Can you describe it to someone in your family?
There's a birthday in my family today so we're hoping to have some birthday cake. Would love it to look like the cakes you created in Purple Mash. They looked delicious!!! Well done everyone!
Take care everyone and missing you so much.

Hello everyone! I hope that you had a lovely weekend with your family. Did you do some research about VE Day? I'm sure you know that VE stands for Victory in Europe and VE Day is a celebration of the end of World War II. In Year 4, you will learn all about World War II and I know that pupils really enjoy this topic. One of the many things you can look forward to doing in Year 4.
Our focus for tomorrow:
- Literacy - Phonics - Blue and Green Group - your new sound is 'i'(i/ie) eg chip, miss, lit. Check out your Phonics Booklet and your spelling booklet for more examples of words with this sound. Purple Group - you are focusing on words with blends beginning with s eg st, sm, sl. Complete the activities in your Phonics Blends booklet. Red Group - you are working on words that finish with 'ut' eg but, cut, hut, nut. Work on your spellings for this week.
- Numeracy - Time - See your pack for today's activity. Squares and Rectangles - you are making sure that you know all the quarter intervals (o'clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to.) so that you are ready to move on to new times. Complete two pages of your booklet. Triangles - you are working on quarter past. Circes - if you have completed all o'clock activities, you are ready to move on to half past.
- Purple Mash - check Purple Mash for the Alert that takes you to your group's Numeracy activity. Also, this week on the blog you can share activities that you like to do to get some exercise.
I hope that you have a good day.

Good morning boys and girls! I hope you are looking forward to your day off tomorrow. Tomorrow we are off for the first Bank Holiday in May but we're also off tomorrow to celebrate VE Day. Can you find out what VE Day is about? Why will we celebrate it tomorrow?
Today we will be focusing on:
- Numeracy - Number - See your pack for your group's work. Squares and rectangles, remember to use our strategies to subtract 11, 21, 9, 19. (to subtract 11 with your 100 square or mentally …… subtract 10, then subtract 1). Triangles, and Circles, you are either subtracting 8, adding within 10, or thinking about the number 19.
- Literacy - Reading - Some of you are finding Oxford Owl is a great resource (details were in your first pack). Please remember to click 6 - 7 years and that resources for our class are labelled Year 2 (not Year 3) as this is an English resource and our class is called Year 2 in the English education system. Click on the 'Reading' tab and then on the 'Which Stage' link to find out which stage to begin on. (Move down a level if books are too challenging./ move up a level is they are very easy. We want to focus on the enjoyment of reading.) If you read a book that you particularly enjoy, write the title on our Year 3 blog. Click here or on the owl to access the website.
I hope that you have a good day and enjoy your day off tomorrow. Have a lovely weekend too. Well done everyone and enjoy the break.

Firstly, in your new pack you’ll have noticed that I’ve referred to Week 3 or 4 sometimes instead of Week 5 or 6. I noticed when I started to make your next pack yesterday. I don’t know what week I’m on!!!! Third and fourth weeks after Easter holidays but Weeks 5 and 6 of home learning! Sorry.
Today we are starting to think about measures and learn how we have standard units for measurement of length. We begin with a metre and so today I’d like you to find a tape measure or something that can help you to work out how long a metre is. If you stretch your hands out wide, is this more than a metre or less than a metre? Can you try to remember how long a metre is by using your stretch?
In Literacy we are thinking about our birthdays. What a special day! I hope that you had time yesterday to chat to someone about your special day.
Today we are focusing on;
- Literacy - My Birthday - See writing frame and Purple Mash activity.
- Numeracy - Measure - Length - Metre. Circles Group, you are thinking about triangles today. See your pack.
I’m really looking forward to reading about how you like to celebrate your birthday and the special memories you have. Don’t forget - capital letters, punctuation and read over your work before you hand it in.
Take care,
Mrs Irvine

Tuesday 5th May
Good morning everyone! Great to see lots of helpful boys and girls sharing how they help their family by posting on our Purple Mash blog. Well done Hannah, Niamh, Georgia, Joel, Zach, Ross, Eva, Joel, Gemma and Ella-Rose. As you know, this week we are thinking about fun activities that we can do with our family. This is really important when we're spending lots of time together. Please share ideas to help others.
Today we will be focusing on:
- Literacy - Grammar - See pack for your group's activity. We are learning about words that can be used to join two sentences together. Blue and Green Groups - you are learning about 'Subordinating Conjunctions'. Words like because, if, when and that. Purple Group - you are using and to join sentences. Red Group - you are completing your Lexia activities.
- Numeracy - Money - Squares, Rectangles and Triangles - you are adding amounts up to £1 - 2 pages ('How much does each have?' Anya, Ben, Carol etc and 'Count each row of money and put the amount in the empty box'). Circles - you are using 1p and 2p to make amounts. If you have some extra time, click here for the Toy Shop Money Game. Click on 'Mixed Coins' and then 'Up to £1 (Squares and Rectangles) or 'Up to 20p' (Triangles) or 'One Coin' and 'Up to 10p' (Circles).
Tomorrow you will be writing about how you like to celebrate your birthday. Today you could think about what you like to do, a favourite present you've received and discuss birthday memories with your family.
Remember you can share your knowledge of celebrations on our class blog.

Start with Level 2, Addition, Up to 100 - Ten More. Are you ready for challenge? - Literacy - Comprehension / Lexia. Today’s comprehension is called ’Eletelephony’. Enjoy being creative! Take care and hope you’re all keeping well. Mrs Irvine |

At 11:30am each day you can listen to the Libraries NI Storytime. See the link below for more information. You can also choose a story to listen to from a selection that have already been told. Enjoy!
Today we will focus on:
- Numeracy - Money (See your pack. Squares, Rectangles and Triangles - you are finding different ways to make 50p, Circles - you are using 1p and 2p to make amounts).
- Number Facts (Blue Group - subtract 10 and Red Group - make 8 by adding two numbers).
- Literacy - Blue and Green Groups - you are learning about how verbs can be in the past or present tense e.g. play (present tense) and played (past tense), Purple Group - you are building sentences and Red Group / Lexia Group - you are completing 20 minutes of Lexia.

Today could you find out about the life of Florence Nightingale and how she made a difference for the soldiers she cared for during the Crimean War?
Florence Nightingale was born on 12th May 1820. We were going to have a special birthday party for her in our class as it would have been her 200th birthday! She was alive many years ago and yet we still learn about her today. Why do you think that is? Enjoy researching this amazing lady. Click here to view a video clip about Florence Nightingale that may help you with your writing.
Have a good day and I look forward to reading your speech bubbles tomorrow.

Happy Easter Everyone!
Firstly, well done for keeping your learning going at home. What about a big hug for your teachers at home who are helping you with your learning? You’re all doing a great job.
If there are any activities that you haven’t had a chance to do, try and get them done this week but it’s been great to hear that many of you are up to date. Check Purple Mash and see if you’ve done all the ‘Alerts’.
It’s time to have a break for Easter. Enjoy time with your family and think about some activities you can do. Maybe make a fun list of things to do over Easter. Do you like drawing, making crafts, playing games, baking.... I’m sure you’ll think of great ideas. I wondered if you could make a ‘Number Hunt’ like the one we did on Number Day. This time you could hide the numbers for someone in your family. (Record where you hide the numbers in case you hide them very well!!!) Keep sending in your photos to the school email address.
I hope that you have a lovely Easter. Happy Easter from Laura, Jennifer and I.

As you are hopefully aware, we have prepared home learning packs for the children in order for our pupils to continue to learn during the next weeks. There are information sheets at the front of the pack to help with this. The pack contains Numeracy and Literacy activities - one of each per day. Take it a day at a time.
I’ll set Purple Mash activities too so the pupils can check for alerts when they log in. Please encourage the children to click on the ‘Sharing’ tab’, then ‘Shared Blogs’ and finally the ‘Year 3’ link. Here, the pupils can write posts to keep in touch. I would love to hear from the children.
Take care, Mrs Irvines

On Tuesday we got involved with Safer Internet Day. We discussed the technology that we use in school and at home and the importance of keeping safe on our devices. The children were able to discuss how to use technology safely and what to do if something happened that they knew wasn’t ok. We watched some animations which gave advice on watching videos, sharing photographs and playing video games. Keep safe everyone.

We’re enjoying our Practical Numeracy sessions which are helping us to understand missing number sums.
One of this week’s activities involved pupils working with a partner. One pupil put a number of counters under their hand and then put some extra counters under their hand. They then told their partner the new number of counters and challenged their partner to work out how many were added.
For example, I’ve 6 counters, I’ve added some more and now have 10 counters. How many extra did I add to make 10 altogether?
