30th June 2020: Our last day in Year Two!

Good Morning everyone!
Tuesday 30th June 2020 is 'Outfit of the day' day...but more importantly it is your last day in Year Two- now that is something worth celebrating!
So to finish the year in celebratory style, I would like to sum up my top highlights from this year,  share some of your coolest 'Outfit of the Day' choices and messages, introduce some very special one-off Year Two Awards...and finish with a final story!    Lets get started!

First of all, some highlights: can you remember these special days?
  • Dressing up like WILD ANIMALS!
  • Our amazing CHRISTMAS PLAY
  • Our FIRST DAY in Year Two
  • The fabulous sunny SPONSORED WALK
  • The day you all became the teacher and had to teach the WHOLE CLASS!
  • 80s day and THE LOCOMOTION!
  • BOOK DAY when the older pupils came to read to us!
  • Our POST OFFICE trip!
  • The HALLOWEEN PARTY and amazing Hallowe'en Hampers!
  • The SNOWIEST DAY of the year!
  • NUMBER DAY!
Coming more up to date: some amazing OUTFITS OF THE DAY and end of term messages!
Look how grown up you all are!
As it is the last day of term, there won't be any more work related updates on this page so you can have a well-deserved rest, but our page will stay over the Summer in case you would like to access and of the online games, links, or stories, or to check out all of the amazing photos and art!

I've missed our Friday prizes so wanted to do something a little different to finish off the year: so here is a special video awards ceremony to celebrate all of your hard work during the year and the school closure and a story to finish.

Click for the Year Two awards and "Oh the places you will go" story.

Everyone: stay safe, keep smiling.
Miss Briggs.

END of YEAR REPORTS
Parents - please collect your child's end of year report on Tuesday 30th June from the school office.
They will be available to collect between 10.00am and 1.00pm.
Please return any school textbooks/reading books when you come to collect the report. It would be appreciated if you could put the books into one of the manilla folders from the pupil packs or a plastic bag with your child's name on it.
We really need to get these books back as there are many hundreds of pounds worth of books, that we can't afford to lose.

Thank you.

Friday  26th June

Good Morning everyone!
It is Friday 26th June 2020, which is National Cream Tea day!

Since school has been closed the grown ups at home have been very busy looking after you and helping you to learn. Today you could say thank you by colouring the little 'Thank you' card in your home pack and making sure that they take some time to have a rest and very nice well-deserved cuppa from you and me!

Today's update will be the last 'school work' update on our page, you've worked so hard and its time to properly wind down towards the Summer holidays.
You still have some fun activities in your Seashore Topic Book to continue with if you wish on Monday and Tuesday, and if you are lucky you will be able to get out to the beach over the next little while to complete the 'My Trip to the Seaside' booklet!

I have one more video to share with you on Tuesday so please check back in for that and in case there is any information or updates to share with you regarding the end of term.

A few quick reminders:
*Photos:  Tuesday would have been our final day together in Year Two and we would usually have a dress up end-of-term celebration.  Unfortunately we can't be together for it, but it would be AMAZING if you could send me a photo in your favourite costume or outfit: the more colourful, the better.
I can make it into a special collage to post on our page along with a final little video for you :)
If you could send your to the office before Sunday evening that would be amazing- please remind any friends who may not see this so we can get as many end -of- term pictures as we can! info@dromaraps.org
*Reports: Will be ready to pick up on Tuesday(See Mr Armstrong's update above). Please return reading books/comprehension textbooks/grammar&punctuation textbooks/lclass library books
*Phone calls: I am continuing to do phone calls for a catch up cheerio and will get in touch with everyone whether its tomorrow, Monday or Tuesday.

For the last time in Year Two: here are my suggestions for today's activities.  As always, please just do what you can: happy pupils learn best and you've all done so well to get this far!
Literacy:
If at all possible, try to log in to purple mash and complete the 'Selfie' Mash cam with an end -of-term message to everyone in the class. Remember, you don't need a webcam to do this: just click on the image rather than the camera. Type your message and save in the folder- I will pop them on here on Tuesday for your friends to read.  You can see my example below!

Purple Mash-click classroom door - dressing up box - scroll to selfie cam - complete activity- save

If this isn't possible, please look in your Topic Booklet to find the page with a Rock Pool drawing.
Look at the pictures and see if you know what the are, then try to sound out each word and write it in.
I was at Tyrella Beach yesterday and there were some very cool rockpools with lots of tiny shells, seaweed and living creatures in! I took this photo for you!

Literacy: Sight Words Day 10 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOiadOM4GEk
Mrs Irvine will be so happy with her readers and spellers next year!

Numeracy:

Please work towards completing those Numeracy booklets!
If you would like an online activity, you can try this
https://www.ictgames.com/mobilePage/shiftingShapes/index.html
You have to guess what the shape is my moving the peephole around.
You can click on the eye to discover the correct shape! The Octagon is so tricky!

World Around Us

Look in your Seashore Topic Book.
You will find a page about 'Beach Habitat Sorting'.
Can you complete the sorting activity so that the beach birds, mammals, plants and minibeasts are in the correct sections? Have a go!
Picture
And finally: your last Golden Time in Year Two!

Art Choice:
Draw or paint a colourful octopus or jellyfish. You can see some examples below.
Show that your octopus or jellyfish is swimming in the sea by adding a background.

Craft Choice: Use the funky materials you gathered on 'Upcycling Day' to create a crafty jellyfish - ideas below, but you always have the coolest ideas yourselves!
As always, I love to see what you are up to!

That's all for now! Have a brilliant weekend.
I will be back for a final post on Tuesday, so please check back for that and for any additional information there may be.

Stay safe and keep smiling!
Miss Briggs

Thursday 25th June

Arrrrrr, Mateys!
Thursday 25th June is 'World Seafarers Day'!
When you have completed today's written work I will be leaving you a 'Seafarer'-related investigation activity.

I absolutely LOVE all of the excellent Pirate activities on Purple Mash this week: I am so excited to check in each day to see what you have been up to!
Please check in and have a go if you have time.

Picture
Things to remember:

> End of term photo challenge: funky outfit edition! (Please see yesterday's post)
> When picking up reports on Tuesday, please return class library books, reading books, grammar/comprehension textbooks- as noted in Mr Armstrong's post above, it would be very helpful if these were placed in a labelled folder or plastic bag. Thank you!

On to today's tasks: as always, please just do what you can!

Picture
Literacy: a choice of activities today as we are so close to the end of term!

Either

Try the final suggested Grammar and Punctuation activity from your home pack: you will find it on pages 48 and 49.

Or
In your Topic book you will find a section about holidays which is entitled 'Class Discussion'.
Sadly we won't be able to have the discussion with our whole class together, but you could chat to someone at home about holidays. You can fill in why you think people go on holiday to the beach, and whether you have ever been on a family holiday- if not, where would you love to go?

If you turn the page there are two maps. Could you colour one in? Remember our Year Two Map work: green colouring pencil for land, blue for sea and lakes.
Literacy: Sight Words Day 9: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOiadOM4GEk
Keep going: nearly there!
Numeracy: Please keep working towards completion of any of your Numeracy booklets.

If you would like an online activity, here is my suggestion for today: https://www.ictgames.com/mobilePage/payForIt/index.html
Science Investigation

In your Seashore Topic Booklet you will find an S.T.E.M investigation named 'Float your boat'.
In this activity, you make two boats: you can use any two containers for this rather than exactly what is suggested in the booklet.  Guess which will float best and then test them out.  Please ask an adult before using the sink or bath!
I had a go at this today with little boats shaped from blu tak! It worked really well. I experimented with whether rounded or flat boats worked best.  Then I added a cocktail stick mast- but it made a hole in the blutak boat!  What do you think happened?

Have a go and see how you get on: as always, I wou.d love to see any pictures.

Stay safe and keep smiling!
Miss Briggs

End of Term Photo Challenge

Tuesday would have been our final day together in Year Two and we usually have a dress up end-of-term celebration.  Unfortunately we can't be together for it, but it would be AMAZING if you could send me a photo in your favourite costume or outfit: the more colourful, the better.
I can make it into a special collage to post on our page :) If you could send it to the office before Sunday evening that would be amazing- please remind any friends who may not see this so we can get as many pictures as we can!

It has been so nice to get a chat to some of you already on the phone this week.
I will be doing some more calls on Thursday and Friday, and trying to reach anyone who hasn't been able to answer, please be aware the number may show as 'unknown'.

Picture
Literacy: a choice of activities today as we are so close to the end of term!

Either

Try the final suggested comprehension 'Bart the Shark'.   You will find it on page 39 of your textbook.
You will be reading a story and then answering some questions.  Remember, full sentences and capital letters.

Or

In your Topic book you will find a section titled 'History of seaside holidays'.
Ask an adult to read the writing and the table with you, then test your understanding and recall of the information by completing the 'Seaside Comparison' Past and Present cut and stick on the next page.

Group 3: Please keep up the work on Lexia as we approach the end of term :)

Numeracy: again, a choice of activities!
Either
Choose to continue with working towards completion of your Numeracy Booklets

Or
In your Topic Book, complete the page titled 'What's in the rock pool' and 'Seaside Block Diagram'; you will be able to complete these all by yourself!
If you would like an online activity, this one is super for helping you to revise odd and even numbers:

I have pinned a final Topic in your Purple Mash homescreen.

I would love it if you could draw me a pirate map (and write what the treasure is!) or complete the pirate mashcam.

Squawk! Squawk!
23rd of June is Pink Flamingo day!
When you have completed today's work I am going to leave some instructions for how you can draw a pink flamingo using a number 2 and a number 4!

It is also 'Play Catch' day, so for your 'Get up and Go' I am going to suggest a throw and catch challenge for you.

Here are my suggestions for today's activities: we are nearly at the end of term, so anything you can do from this or to work towards completing your booklets is fantastic.
Literacy- Linked to Topic: Writing a report

This year you have written brilliant reports about nocturnal animals and about people who help us in the community. Today I would like to you to try to write about a creature that lives under the sea.
Perhaps you have a favourite creature:
A clown fish?      A shark?      A star fish?      An angel fish?      An Octopus?

Or maybe you would like to find out about something new...even a little bit crazy!
I've been reading about sea creatures this week, and made you this list of some of the most weird and wonderful ones that I found. I think some of them sound like they are characters in a Roald Dahl story!
There is a gallery below so you can check them out.
  1. Spider crab
  2. Feather star
  3. 'Glaucus Atlanticus' - stinging sea slug!
  4. Mantis shrimp
  5. Yeti crab
  6. Flying fish
  7. Blob fish
  8. Polka Dot Nudibranch
  9. Tasseled Wobbegong
  10. Dumbo Octopus

In your Seaside Topic book you will find a section named 'Writing a report'.
Find out about an Under the Sea animal that interests you and try to fill in the report.
Remember, reports have real facts and information. I'd love to know what you write about!
Literacy: Sight Words
Sight word rap day 7:
You are going to be the coolest spellers in our school! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrbfwBEuAzg

Numeracy
As we get closer to the end of term each day: please work towards completing your Numeracy booklets and on your Mental Maths skills.  Maybe today you could choose the booklet you would like to work on.
Get a grown up to set a timer, and when you have completed your work, you can try our 'Get Up and Go!'
Get up and Go!
As it is National 'Play catch' day, you could have a go at these catching activities:

- Throw a ball against the wall and see if you can catch it. Count how many times you can do this without dropping, then try to beat your score
- Throw a ball against the wall, clap, and then see if you can catch it. Try to set your own record
- Throw a ball against the wall, let it bounce once and then see if you can catch it. How many times can you do it?
- Challenge a brother, sister, mum or dad to beat your records!
Play somewhere safe and mind the windows!

And finally! A quick doodle club activity:
How to draw a flamingo for Pink Flamingo Day! Can you spot the '2' and the '4'?
Give it a go :)

Monday 22nd June 2020

Good morning gang!
Our final full week in Year Two!
I was looking at some photos of you all from the start of Year Two at the weekend.  If you have time, scroll to the beginning of this page for some nice memories- I hope it makes you smile as much as I did:
you have all grown and learned so much this year :)

Did you know that June is audiobook month?
Audiobooks are a great way to listen to stories: I always listen to a book in the car on the way to see you in school, you could try it too!
You can download and  listen to audiobooks on NILibraries for free: you just need your purple library card to get set up. What a treat!

Speaking of treats: not one but TWO celebration collages this week!
FANTASTIC!  Craft, reading, Purple Mash, Selfie Cams, reading, writing, real life pizza making and special lighthouse visits!

Well done: be sure to say thank you to all of the grown ups who have made this possible for you :)

Remember: capital letters, full stops, and read your sentences when they are complete to make sure that they make sense.

Numeracy
As we are approaching the end of the year, please work towards completing your number work booklet and on your Mental Maths skills.  As before: everyone will be at different stages with this and that is okay - take the time to work on anything you have found tricky.

Friday   19th June 2020

Good morning team!

Friday once again! Another busy week with lots of great photos and purple mash activities: I've started to put together our weekly Monday celebration collage (including a picture of an amazing minion card craft!) so pop back on Monday to see that! :)

Today it is National Flip Flop Day!
Do you have your very own pair of flip flops? Maybe you could wear them while doing your work today!

Here are my suggestions for today's tasks!
As always, please just do what you can.
Picture
Today we are going to be thinking all about Lighthouses! I bumped into some older pupils from our school in the village and they said they had visited St John's Point lighthouse this week. Have you ever seen a lighthouse before? I hope you get to visit one, they are just fascinating! I've recorded a lighthouse story for you to listen to, in it you can see Hmph's very own hedgehog sized lighthouse!

Literacy: Spellings and Sight Words

If you have been learning sight words as spellings this week, please have a go at them and see how you get on.
Remember you have your Sight Word Book to continue with in preparation for Year Three.
Its also Day Five of the Sight Word Raps: I've had great reports of some tricky sight words being 'rapped out' already!

Literacy: Writing
You have a choice of two activities today:

Either:
Talk to a grown up about how Mr and Mrs Grinling tricked the naughty seagulls, and write your own sentences explaining what they did on the Lighthouse writing page in your home pack
Or
Look in your Seaside Topic Book and find the page about 'Lighthouses'.  Fill in what Lighthouses are for, and draw some different types of lighthouse. Super information here -https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/t-t-2548178-ks1-all-about-lighthouses-differentiated-differentiated-reading-comprehension if you would like to find out more.

Numeracy

Friday is always a great day for finishing off!  Please take some time today to complete any Numeracy activities you have not yet been able to complete this week. If you are all up to date, either choose a Numeracy booklet that you would like to work towards completing and set your timers for 10-15 minutes, or have a look at the Foundation Stage Mental Maths progression you received and work on some counting and quick recall skills. You can revisit your favourite online activities from this week if you wish.

Adding - https://www.mathplayground.com/galaxypalsto20.html
Taking Away - https://www.mathplayground.com/math_monster_subtraction.html
And finally for today: Golden Time!

You can either draw a Lighthouse picture in Purple Mash (Log in > Go outside> Drawing and Painting> 2 Paint a picture)
 or
Get those crafty thinking caps on to build your very own lighthouse (this can be done over the weekend instead if you wish!) Amazing ideas below! I would love to see what you get up to, so as always please feel free to send to the office :)

Thats all for now: I will be back next week for our final week in Year Two.
Stay safe and keep smiling!

Thursday 18th June 2020

Good morning Year Two!

I hope everyone is having a super week, looking after those sunflowers and trying your best to fill up the reading challenge cards with your new stampers!

Today it is 'National Go Fishing Day' so I have recorded a story for you, it is about a little fish named Tiddler!
There is no work associated with this story, so you can just relax and enjoy it like we would in school!

On to today's tasks! As always, please just do what you can: short bursts may work better at this stage, or having a little 'to do' lists of tasks followed by a treat activity might be a good incentive.

Literacy: Sight Words

Sight word rap 4! Have a go: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WG7RIx3ivzs&t=

Literacy: Comprehension

Group 1: Comprehension
Today I would like you to try the next activity in your comprehension book 'The Rainforest at Night'
You will find it on page 47 of your textbook.
You will be reading a report today, then answering some questions. Remember, full stops, capital letters and try to write whole sentences. You do not have to write the questions out.  There is an activity on p48 which reminds me of our 'Light and Dark' topic!
Group 2: Please select a Literacy or phonics activity from your home pack

Group 3: Please complete a handwriting sentence or phonics activity from your home pack.

Numeracy

This week you are working towards completing your Numeracy Topic Books - Money/Time.
This work will get you ready for Year Three!
Creative

This Sunday is Fathers Day. In school we normally make a card or write a note to Dad or someone you would like to celebrate this weekend. In your home pack you will find some navy card and some yellow card. Could you use these to make a special 'One in a Minion' card? I would love to see what you come up with: some ideas below!
Have fun everyone!
Stay safe and keep smiling!

Wednesday 17th June 2020

Good Morning Team!

I hope everyone is having a good week so far!

I know it is hard to keep going when it is sunny outdoors and you have been learning at home for a long time, but there are still some learning adventures ahead!

Some amazing Science pictures coming in- The ice glove/balloon investigation is one of my favourites out of the whole year and I can see you had lots of fun with it at home too.  Isn't it fascinating that the water (a liquid) turns to ice(solid)? Did you notice what the ice turns into when it melts? Thats right- straight back to water!
If you didn't get a chance to complete the investigation, you can check out my results below. I set a timer and checked on the icy hand every fifteen minutes.
Something interesting happened to the water level as the ice melted. Can you talk to a grown up about what is happening?
Today we will be continuing to celebrate National Safety week in our World Around Us work.
(I didn't want to break our lockdown tradition of celebrating a completely new event each day- it is also 'Eat your Veggies' day -eat up those peas at tea time!)

On to today's tasks! As always, just do what you can :)
Literacy: Grammar and Punctuation
Spelling group one and two: for today's Literacy, you will be thinking about using a capital letter for names of places. Remember 'Capitals for People, Places, Days and Months'!
You can find this activity on page 40 of your Vocabulary, Grammar and Punctuation Book.
You are welcome to complete the tasks on page 41 if you have time and are able.

Spelling group 3 - Please log in to Lexia and select a written Literacy skills activity from your home pack.

Literacy: Sight words Day Three!
Day three of the sight word raps!  Listen, rap along with Jack. Can you read, write and spell the words?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ebGBO3mBwM

Numeracy: Taking Away

Like yesterday, today you will be working towards completing your taking away booklet.
Set a ten or fifteen minute timer and see what you can get done!

This activity is SO MUCH FUN! Use a number line if you need to complete the sums - https://www.mathplayground.com/math_monster_subtraction.html
Time for a brain break (we usually take a number of these each day at this stage of term!
Click for Fidgety Fish with Miss Briggs and Hmph!

And finally: World Around Us

Yesterday you thought about staying safe in the sea, today I would like you think about being safe in the sun!
Talk to a grown up about how we can stay safe and happy on sunny days.
You can think about wearing sun cream, your sunglasses, and playing in the shade when it is really sunny.
Write a message and draw a picture.

On Friday we will be thinking about lighthouses! If you would like to complete a lighthouse craft, please keep an eye out for a toilet roll tube, kitchen roll tube, pringles can or similar :)

Thats all for now!
Stay safe and keep smiling!

Tuesday 16th June 2020

Good morning team!

I hope you were able to get your packs yesterday.  It was nice to put together your books from this year, it made me smile to see just how much you have learned!  You will spot a new reading challenge in your home pack, this time with your own stamper so you can be the teacher!

I was so proud to see these full reading challenge cards. I am so proud of you girls!
There are two sections in your new pack: one with activities to keep us busy and learning until the end of term, and one with some activities that will help you to get ready for Year Three. Tuck that one away safely for now :)

Speaking of Safety: did you know that June is National Safety Month? You will be thinking about some Summer safety today in your World Around Us work!

Lets get started on today's tasks: as always, do what you can and keep trying your very best!
Picture
Literacy: Sight words
Day two of the sight word raps!  Listen, rap along with Jack. Can you read, write and spell the words?
You are going to be able to read so many words when we get to number ten!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=boSwtN7RWtU

Literacy: Handwriting

In school and over the last few weeks we have been working on upper case/capital letter formation:
we have reached the end of the alphabet!
Just letter Z to do: its a lovely easy one, the same formation as small letter z, but larger in size.

I was thinking of a nice way to finish off the alphabet: you've worked so hard on your formation.
What about making a lovely piece of letter art to celebrate this milestone?

I used my favourite post it note pad and wrote the letters in a rainbow pattern. I really had to focus to make sure that the letters were the correct sizes and in the correct position AND to keep the colour pattern going. Do you think you can do it? If you want, write in pencil first then use your colours to write over it.
If you are struggling with letter size, ask an adult to help you rule some faint lines to guide you (see my example) - these can be rubbed out at the end.

If you have an spare/old picture frame in the house, you could pop your writing inside, or pop it in a memory box - you could even write the date. When you are grown up you will remember this unusual time learning at home and the grown ups that helped you!
Numeracy: Adding

Today you will be working towards completing your addition booklets. You will all be at different stages with this and that is absolutely okay. Maybe you could set a ten or fifteen minute timer and see what you can get done?

A quick youtube search will let you find some very fun timers: I like this one, linked to our topic:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3Y18hH8Wac (10 mins)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OoxiSi_ebZ4 (15 mins)

If you would like an online activity, Galaxy pals is a fast paced and fun choice for number bonds:
https://www.mathplayground.com/galaxypalsto20.html. It gets tricky quickly, so dont be afraid to refesh and keep it simple if needs be.
Time for a brain break: lets get up and go!
Mums and Dads - I think you might remember this one: it was one of my favourites around 1989!
Try it once to get the hang of the moves then see if you can get someone at home to join in - or with a grown up supervising you could even share your moves with nana and papa or a friend on whatsapp, skype or facetime!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83aUaYQF4NM

And finally: some World Around Us Topic Work.

Look in your Seaside Topic and Investigations booklet for the page entitled: Keeping Safe in the Sea.
Have a chat about how you will stay safe in the sea this Summer.
Will you look out for flags at the beach which tell you if it is safe to swim?
Will you make sure that Mum or Dad know you are going into the water?
Maybe you will make sure that you do not use a Lilo or inflatable without a trusted grown up close by.
Draw a picture and write a message.
Thats all for today!
I will be back tomorrow with more suggestions.

Stay safe and keep smiling!
Miss Briggs :)

Monday 15th June 2020

Good Morning everyone!

Oh my goodness! Can you believe we are in the last two weeks of term?
Your final home pack is ready to collect in school today at the times noted above. There is a seashore Topic Book, a Trip to the Seaside activity book and some interesting bit and pieces in there to keep you busy as we reach the end of Year Two! You have worked very hard through a difficult period, and while I will of course still be making suggestions here, th
ere will be a little less formal work these last two weeks.  Lets make them count: try to keep reading and completing at least one piece of written work each day!

We always love to start the week by looking back at some of the previous week's highlights.
This is what you got up to in the week that we celebrated Best Friends Day, Oceans Day, Ballpoint Pen day, Make Life Beautiful Day, and National Camping Month.  Look at those busy, happy faces!

We have not one, but TWO birthdays to celebrate today!  Happy Birthday to this special brother and sister team!  We will all be thinking about you today!
On to today's activities!
Today it is National SMILE POWER day!
What is making you smile at the moment?
For today's Monday writing activity, please write one or two sentences about what makes you smile.
I would love it if you could pop on to Purple Mash and access the Selfie Cam, add a picture and let me know there! (Picture Guide to accessing activity and a my example below!)
Literacy: Sight Words
You will see in your new home pack that we have reached the end of the spellings we need to complete for Year Two. If the routine of having new words each day has worked for you, you will find some sight words in the pack to keep you going until the end of term.

I am going to share a sight word video each day: lets build that sight word vocabulary reading for Year Three!
Sight words Day 1:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zJJ1S6-rMc
Picture
Literacy: Topic Linked Literacy
Please see new 'We do love to be beside the Seaside' Topic Book.

In your new home pack you will find your final Topic Book.
Today, please have a go at the 'Seaside Labelling' cut and stick - you will find the words you need in the stapled cut and stick pack just inside your topic book.  Then turn over and find the page labelled 'Class discussion'. Can you have your own discussion at home and fill in why you think people might like to go on holiday to a beach?

Numeracy: Topic Linked Number work
Flick forward through your booklet until you find the seaside 'I spy and count'
Complete the counting activity and fill in the numbers.
Then try to complete these activities:

How many things are there altogether in the picture? (hint: put a pencil dot on each one as you count it so you don't accidentally count twice!)
Draw or write sums which shows these stories:

Number of boats add number of sandcastles equals?
Number of crabs add number of seagulls equals?
Number of kites add number of beachballs equals?
Number of postcards add number of lighthouses add number of buckets equals?

Can you create two sums of your own?

ICT /Topic Work
Please have a look in Purple Mash at the new 'Pin' for this week, named 'Weekly Activities'.
Please have a go at the 'Sea or Not' quiz.
Lovely video about marine litter/plastic pollution here for a discussion starter

Good morning everyone!
Its the end of the school week: lets do our best to make it a FAB FRIDAY!

I was missing you all today and was having a look at your amazing photographs.
They always make me smile!

One of the things I miss most is getting to do Science with all of you (you know it is my favourite subject!).

I am so happy to see that as well as completing your Literacy and Numeracy, you are still experimenting, observing and recording at home.

Keep up the great work, scientists of the future!
Picture
Did you know that June is National Camping Month?
We have not been able to get out and about camping and caravanning as normal this last little while, but maybe this weekend or before the end of June you could create a den under the table or in the living room, or put up a tent in the garden to read or have some snacks in?
Let's get started on today's tasks!

First:prepare for today's golden time.
In your home pack, you will find a balloon.
If you have lost it, you can use a plastic glove for this activity ( I used a glove and it was even more fun!)
Pop a little plastic toy (like a small dinosaur or a toy from a kinder egg inside it.
Rather than blow it up, fill it with water.  Ask a grown up to tie it for you,
Pop it in the freezer and then make a start on your tasks.
You can check in on it each time you see an 'o'clock time on the clock.
More on this later!
Spellings/Sounds/Number Stories/Numbers

As it is Friday, please have a go at this weeks spellings or sounds.
Can you get them all correct? As we always say in school: take your time and do your best!

 Literacy: Writing a postcard
You have learned to write stories, poems, lists, instructions, reports and letters this year, and the next thing I would like you to think about is how to write a postcard.  Postcards are different to the other types of writing we have complete this year and have some special features: I hope that the pictures below will help to explain them.
You will find a postcard template in your home pack: have a go at writing your own postcard!
You could write your postcard from somewhere you have visited in the past, or use your imagination and write the postcard from somewhere you would like to write it from.
Remember to draw a colourful picture on the other side of your postcard!
Picture
Numeracy: Practical Numeracy

For a practical 'Time' Activity, please play 'Toss and Tally'.
-You will need a timer (stopwatch, mobile phone, clock with a second hand)
-a 50p coin
-paper and pencil

Draw a line down the middle of a piece of paper, diving it in two. Label one side 'heads' and the other 'tails'
You are going to 'tally' how many heads and tails you will toss in one minute!

Ask an adult or older brother or sister to time one minute.
Start to flip the 50p. Catch it, and look to see if it lands on heads or tails.
Record it by making a mark on your chart. You can use 'tally marks' like we used in school for our table points.
Continue this for one minute.  Count up your tally marks. Did you get more heads or more tails?
Try it again. Did you get the same result?

If you wish, you can revist the online activities from this week:

Friday is a brilliant day for finishing off!
-complete any activities you have not had a chance to do yet this week:
-add stars to your reading challenge chart
-visit the Purple Mash topic and complete some art or a Mash Cam
-don't forget to water your sunflower!
Picture
Golden Time

Hopefully you had an opportunity to freeze your balloon or glove this morning and afternoon!
After a few hours in the freezer, it should be frozen solid.
Ask an adult to help you to peel off the balloon or glove: you will be left with a frozen globe or hand with a small toy trapped inside! Your challenge is to free the toy!
How will you melt the ice quickly? Carefully chip the ice away? Will you warm it in your hands? Run it under warm water?
It is worth repeating this experiment, but this time you can add glitter or even food dye.
Do you think warm water or cold water would freeze quickest.
As always, I would love to see your photos or read about your learning adventures.

Have a lovely weekend everyone! I will be back with more activities on Monday :)
Stay safe and keep smiling!
Miss Briggs

Thursday  11th June 2020

Hello everybody!
I hope you are all continuing to work hard at home and are looking after yourselves and your families.
11th of June is 'Making Life Beautiful day'.  I think this would be a good time to 'make life beautiful' through some acts of kindness. I have made this 'Kindness Bingo' card for you! How many of these do you tasks do think you could do?
Picture
On to today's tasks. As always, please just do what you can.

Literacy: Grammar and Punctuation
Spelling group one and two: for today's Literacy, you have a punctuation activity to complete.
You can find this activity on page 46 of your Vocabulary, Grammar and Punctuation Book.   You are welcome to complete the tasks on page 47 if you have time and are able.

In school we learned some 'Kung Fu Punctuation' to help us identify and remember different punctuation marks. This is a reminder of some of the moves we learned - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGx8KPhzS8A
When reading today, try to show an adult some 'kung fu punctuation' moves!

Spelling group 3 - Please log in to Lexia and select a written Literacy skills activity from your home pack.
Picture
Numeracy: Topic Work
Today I would like to to focus on Time work.
If you have completed your Time Booklet, please try one of these time activities.
1) 'How long is a minute': You are going to guess how long a minute is. Ask an adult to time 'one minute'. Close your eyes. When you think one minute is up, open your eyes. Were you close? Try this a few times.  Talk with an adult about how you can make it easier to guess when a minute is up (clue: a minute has 60 seconds).
2) Time Tower: Get some building blocks or bricks. Ask an adult to time one minute. What is the tallest tower you can build in a minute? Can you beat your own score?
3) Work out Ask an adult to time five minutes in total. For one minute, jog on the spot. Rest for 30 seconds. Jump on the spot for 30 seconds, rest for 30 seconds.  Rub your tummy and pat your head for 30 seconds. Rest 30 seconds. Hop on one foot for 30 seconds. Rest 30 seconds.  Hop on the other foot for 30 seconds. Task complete!
4) Two minute tidy: One your marks, get set....go! Ask an adult to time two minutes.  How many toys can you tidy? You will have to act fast! Good luck!
Sight Words
Please continue with your 'Sight Words' Booklet.

World Around Us
Tomorrow we are going to be writing postcards in Literacy.
Have you ever received or written a postcard? Maybe you even have one at home!
Talk to a parent or someone at home about a holiday you have been on or a place you have visited that you really liked. Could you find a photo of the holiday or trip? This will help you with your writing tomorrow. You could display the photo somewhere in your bedroom to remind you that there are lovely things to look forward to in the future!

Remember:
>Fantastic new topic in Purple Mash this week! Lots of lovely art trays already and I spotted this awesome Mashcam today!
>the deadline for the Art competition (details in Tuesday's post) is Friday morning if you wish to enter.

Good Morning everyone!

Half way through the week already, and today we are celebrating National Ballpoint day!

When you have finished today's written work I am leaving some instructions for how you can make a submarine out of a pen lid!

Lets get started on today's tasks: as always, just do what you can :)
Picture
Literacy - Phonics

As we have been thinking about syllables in phonics work this week, this is a fun activity with the 'Blazer Fresh' team.
It gets very tricky at the end- so many syllables - you may end up giggling more than you clap!
Give it a go once or twice and see how you get on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=psUPYR235O8

Literacy: Comprehension

Group 1: Comprehension
Today I would like you to try the next activity in your comprehension book 'The Lonely Penguin'
You will find it on page 37 of your textbook.
You will be reading a story and then answering some questions. Remember, full stops, capital letters and try to write whole sentences. You do not have to write the questions out.  There is an activity on p38 which reminds me of our 'Story Maps'. I wonder what Penguin's map would look like?

Group 2: Please select a Literacy or phonics activity from your home pack

Group 3: Please complete a handwriting sentence or phonics activity from your home pack.

Numeracy:

Please focus on subtraction/taking away today - complete the next few pages in your book.
Please revisit the subtraction activities on 'Daily Ten' today: do you think you have become more skilled in the last few weeks? Could you try a trickier level this time?   https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/daily10
Picture
ICT - Purple Mash

I have pinned a new topic for you to explore on Purple Mash. It relates to our 'Seashore' Topic.

If you have time, log in and have a look at the 'Paint Projects'.  Could you design a funky fish and type a sentence.
Think about adding a capital letter at the start of your sentence and a full stop at the end.
I drew Nemo for my paint project!
Science Time!

The next in our series of Science activities uses a pen lid (as it is ball point pen day).
Remember it is important that you never put a pen lid in your mouth, especially when you could do a fun activity like this instead. Watch the video and then see how to create your own submarine in a bottle!
Have fun - and as always, if you have a go, snap a picture so we can share it with the class!

Tuesday 9th June 2020

Good morning team! I hope everyone is well today.

In this week in June 'World Oceans Day' is celebrated! Today when you have finished your written work I have recorded a video for you which shows a science/craft  activity relating to the ocean.

Lets get started on today's tasks!
As always, please just do what you can (and don't forget to keep watering your sunflower and adding stars or stickers to your reading record card).

Literacy: Handwriting

In school, we have been working on upper case/capital letter formation.
Please revise capital and lower-case letters Aa- Ww, paying careful attention to formation, position and proportion.
This week, I would like you to work on capital X and capital Y.

Capital X- A nice easy one shape-wise!  Very similar to lower case letter x- but please emphasise the height difference as it is essential to show this when writing.
Capital Y - This one is a little trickier- this video shows it clearly:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WeajaDaZXEU
Look carefully the placement of the short diagonal down stroke and the longer diagonal down stroke.
This takes some practice so it doesn't look like its falling over and is quite different to this capital > Y< that we see on computer fonts so please spend some time on this one.

Literacy - Dictation
Spelling Group 1 and 2: you could have a go at dictation: the first is easy, the second is trickier.
Ask and adult to read out loud slowly for you and see if you can sound out and write the words.

Easier: 'Hot chips from the shop. A can of pop from the shop. Hot chips and pop. MMMMM!'
Trickier: 'Have you seen three sheep? Three green sheep asleep? Three green sheep asleep on the street'.

Spelling group 3: please complete a phonics activity  and don't forget to keep logging in to Lexia.

Numeracy
Today I would like you to focus on adding.
Please complete the next 2/3 pages in your addition booklet.
If you would like to complete an online activity, this one is very fun! I would recommended the settings shown in the picture to the right (but please feel to try to speed up the timer or try different combinations if you wish.

 Art competition: Deadline 12th June

As we have some many great artists in our class, I thought you may be interested in a local art competition run by the Ulster Teacher's Union.

The challenge is to create/design a picture or model based on these two topics:
>"My Lockdown Hero" or
>"My Favourite Day in Lockdown".

The closing date is Dinner time on Friday 12th June, so if you wish to enter please send entries to the school office (info@dromaraps.org) by Friday morning we can forward them to the competition for you.  There are prizes for different age groups and a chance for the pictures to be featured on the website. I will be popping a certificate into Purple Mash trays for anyone who enters too!
Science/Craft (can be done at any time as you need a few materials for this one!)
I have recorded a Science/Craft activity for you to try out at home.  This is great fun: I have been experimenting with mine, and found that it works best if you shake it very gently to begin with. Have fun!

Stay safe and keep smiling!

Monday 8th June 2020

Good Morning everybody!

A brand new week in our virtual classroom!
I hope you had a lovely break at the weekend and are ready to start afresh this week!

A special hello to this special pupil - now six year old!
I hope you had a brilliant birthday at the weekend!
Picture
As usual, I'd like to start the week on a high by celebrating some of the brilliant home learning that took place as we celebrated Caught Reading month, Hot Air Balloon day, Running day, and Outdoors day! You have all been very busy indeed!

Throughout this year I have felt very proud of the Year Two pupils -people often comment on their great attitude and enthusiasm for learning.

It is wonderful to see this continue at home: thank you everyone for your outstanding efforts!

I will be phoning over the next few days to check everyone is safe, well and happy and to see if anything is needed for the next pupil packs: please be aware that the number may appear as unknown or withheld.

On to today's tasks!

Picture
Monday 8th of June is 'Best Friends Day'.
I have recorded a story for you to listen to about some friends who share a shell.

Sharing a Shell story:
Picture
Literacy: Writing
On Monday we develop our independent writing skills.

Today, you can either:
  •  Write two or three sentences about your best friend or friends. Are they kind? Funny? Helpful? Maybe they like the
same things as you or maybe they encourage you to try new things?
OR
  • Have a go at the 'Sharing a Shell' activity from your home pack. Think about the story and fill in the setting, characters, and what happens in the story.

Literacy: Phonics

This week, rather than thinking about a new phonics sound we are thinking about syllables in words.
Identifying syllables is a really useful skill as you progress towards more tricky spellings in Year Three.

This video may be helpful - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9S7DY2lgJlU

And here is a 'get up and go' here which is terrific for identifying syllables and 'clapping them out'.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vlBc703kYMg
Numeracy
Today, please focus on Number work, completing the next few pages in your number book.

If you would like an online number activity, try: https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/paint-the-squares
You can choose a number square and create number patterns - count in 2's, 3's, 5's or 10s, or perhaps colour all the numbers 'bigger than' or 'smaller than' a given number
.
Picture
Other
On Tuesday, I will be offering a Science/Craft activity which uses blue food dye, glitter, cooking oil, and an empty bottle (just in case you are at the shops- although this could be completed at any time throughout the week :)

Creative

As promised in today's video, here are some step-by-step guides to drawing the little seashore creatures from 'Sharing the shell'. These would be a super way to be busy when Mum or Dad need to get some of their tasks done too. You could even draw a seashore background for the friends.
Stay safe and keep smiling!

Friday 5th June 2020

Good Morning team!
It is Friday 5th of June today, and looking on the calendar of special days, I can see that it is 'Hot Air Balloon day' today.
Have you ever seen a hot air balloon? They are fascinating! Maybe an adult can help you to find out how they fly (and who the first passengers in a hot air balloon were - the answer will surprise you!)

Today you will be listening to a story, working on your story writing skills, doing some Practical Numeracy and finishing off the week with some lovely Science Golden Time.

Let's get started!
Picture
Spellings/Sounds/Number Stories/Numbers

As it is Friday, please have a go at this weeks spellings or sounds.
Can you get them all correct? As we always say in school: take your time and do your best!

Literacy: Listening
Hmph and I have recorded message and a funny story for you to relax and listen to today! I hope you like it.

Literacy : Story Writing

As it is Hot Air Balloon day I would like you to have a go at writing your own Hot Air Balloon story.
It will be an imaginative, 'made up' story rather than a recount of a hot air balloon ride that you have been on, so  try to think of a character name rather than using your own name. What will your character see on their hot air balloon ride? How will your story start? How will it end?

Here is my example:
'On a sunny morning Max wanted to go on an adventure in his gigantic rainbow coloured hot air balloon.  The hot air balloon rose high up into the sky.   Max looked down and saw rivers and fields.   He flew over the zoo and saw all the animals.  When he landed he had an ice lolly!'.

Group 1 and 2 - your story can be shorter or longer than mine. Try to sound out tricky words and write words you already know all by yourself.   At the end, read your story to someone at home and draw a 'wow' picture.
Group 3 - You can tell an adult your story and they will write it for you. You can copy the sentence or sentences and draw a 'wow' picture.
Picture

Numeracy

Friday is normally our Practical Numeracy day in school.
Today I would like you think about capacity.
This will help to explain capacity: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zt9k7ty/articles/zp8crdm

You can get some cups or containers and use them to show that you understand the different maths language of capacity - empty, half full, half empty, nearly empty, nearly full...maybe even overflowing!

You can revisit any of this weeks online Numeracy activities if you wish :)

Golden Time
Wee Hmph had some bubbles in his bath last night, he looked very funny when one landed on his nose!
For Golden Time today, you can have some bubble fun!

In your home pack you will find some bubbles:
Here are some challenges you can try:

Use the pipe cleaner to see if you can make your own bubble wand.
  • Can you make a circle bubble wand?
  • Can you make a triangle bubble wand?
  • Can you make a square bubble wand?
  • Can you make a heart shaped bubble wand?
  • Do the bubbles always come out the same shape?
Can you blow a tiny bubble?
Can you blow a BIG bubble?
If you spin round holding the wand can you make the wind create bubbles?
Blow lots of bubbles. How many can you pop?

Have fun and remember to send my pictures of any of your home learning adventures!

I will be back next week with more ideas and suggestions, until then: stay safe and keep smiling!

Thursday   4th June 2020

Picture
Good morning everyone!

I have possibly the funniest celebration yet to tell you about today.
June 4th 2020 is 'National Hug your cat day!'

This made me smile; I wonder who thinks of these things?
If you have a cat (or other pet) be sure to give them a hug today.
If not, I have a very fun 'Give a hug' craft to share for when you have completed today's written work!

Picture

A big well done and thank you for the 'Caught Reading' photographs! They are just fantastic.

I have left certificates in your Purple Mash trays, you will see them when you log in :)

On to today's tasks: as always, just do what you can.

Literacy

Spelling group one and two: for today's Literacy, you have a grammar activity to complete.
You will be learning to use a capital letter for 'I. You can find this activity on page 44 of your Vocabulary, Grammar and Punctuation Book.   Remember, you still use a capital letter at the start of sentences, for names, place names and days of the week.

There is a basic and more advanced capital letter activity here -
https://www.roythezebra.com/reading-games-capital-letters.html

Spelling group 3 - Please log in to Lexia and select a written Literacy skills activity from your home pack.

Numeracy
Please focus on Topic Work (Money or Time today)
Complete 2/3 pages in your home pack.
You can find an online Money activity about giving change here - there are a lot of options for making this challenging: please start at the most basic level initially (change from within 10p) https://www.topmarks.co.uk/Flash.aspx?f=howmuchleftv2

Sight Words
Please continue to work through your sight words booklet.

Art - Send a Hug Craft

At this very strange time, we haven't been giving as many hugs as usual, so I thought this craft would be a super one for you to complete.  You could even send it in the post as a lovely surprise for someone that you haven't been able to hug for a little while.

You will need:
-Paper (plain, coloured, or fancy wrapping paper)
-Scissors
-Sellotape or stapler
-Colours
-Pencil
-Ribbon, string or wool

1.  Choose your paper. You can either draw around your hands, carefully cut them out and decorate, or use paint to make two hand prints, let them dry and cut them out carefully. Draw or paint on plain paper or fancy wrapping paper.

2.  Next, attach the hands you have made to your ribbon, wool or string. An adult can help you to measure the string so it is the same length as your arms for an extra special touch!

3. You can add hearts or other cut-out shapes to the string.

4.  You can add this little message if you want:  "Here is a hug with a handmade touch, it will remind you I love you so much'

5. If you want, you can post the hug in an envelope (remember how much fun we had on our post office trip!)

Thats all for today!
Stay safe and keep smiling

Wednesday 3rd June 2020

Picture
Good Morning team!
It is Wednesday 3rd June today which is Global Running Day!
In school at this time of year we would normally be running lots of races to get ready for Sports Day: I hope you are continuing to get lots of fresh air and sunshine as you develop your running, jumping, throwing, catching, bouncing, hopping and skipping skills at home.

For your 'Get up and Go today' you could have a go at this running game. You have to run, bend, stretch and jump to catch the gumballs! Have fun!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Li2qwdUsxU

On to today's activities! Each day is different, but when possible, aim to:
-Read for ten minutes (and add a star to your reading challenge card!)
-Look at Spellings/Sounds/Number facts

-Complete a Literacy activity from your home pack
-Complete a Numeracy activity from your home pack
-If there is time and your child is interested: A World Around Us/Art activity as suggested

Literacy

Group 1: Comprehension
Today I would like you to try the next activity in your comprehension book 'Zog and Zebra'.
You will find it on page 35 of your textbook.
You will be reading a story and then answering some questions. Remember, full stops, capital letters and try to write whole sentences.
You do not have to write the questions out.

Group 2: Please select a Literacy or phonics activity from your home pack

Group 3: Please complete a handwriting sentence or phonics activity from your home pack.

Numeracy
Today I would like you to focus on subtraction/taking away.
Please complete the next 2/3 pages in your subtraction booklet.
If you would like to complete an online activity, this one is useful to learn about the relationship between adding and taking away: https://www.starfall.com/h/addsub/addsub-ladder/?sn=math1--math0
World Around Us

We are starting out on our final Year Two Topic, 'The Seashore'.
In school at the start of a new topic, we talk about what we already know, and what we would like to know.
You could have a look at this video at home for some ideas, then write a list of things you can see at the seaside.
How many can you think of?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6qO0mu6YJW8

Remember, our new topic is up on Purple Mash - well done to James, William, Susannah, Jessica and Harley - great art and story sentences saved in your trays already this week!

Tuesday 2nd June

Picture
Good morning everybody!

I hope that everyone was able to pick their new home pack up and you have checked out the information (and treats!) inside. We will be doing some fun ice and bubble science over the next two weeks and there is a reading challenge for you to have a go at too.

Did you know that June 2020 is 'Great Outdoors Month?
There are lots of activities that can be enjoyed outside at this time of year: I did my 'get up and go' and reading outside in the sun near 'Windy Gap' today:  aren't we lucky to have such lovely places near our school?

If you are outdoors today you could snap your
'Caught reading photo' (some lovely pictures already): don't forget to add a star to your reading challenge card too.

Here are my suggestions for today's activities: as always, just do what you can.

Literacy: Handwriting

In school, we have been working on upper case/capital letter formation.
Please revise capital and lower-case letters Aa- Uu, paying careful attention to formation, position and proportion.
This week, I would like you to work on capital V and capital W.

Capital V - A nice easy one shape-wise!  Very similar to lower case letter v- but please emphasise the height difference as it is essential to show this when writing.
Capital W - Another lovely easy one! Again, please point out the height difference.
Literacy - Dictation
Spelling Group 1 and 2: you could have a go at dictation: the first is easy, the second is trickier.
Ask and adult to read out loud slowly for you and see if you can sound out and write the words.

Easier: 'Mum get up! Dad get up! Sam get up! The sun is up!'
Trickier: 'May I play in the sun and spray Dad? May I stay in a tent at the end of the day?"

Spelling group 3: please complete a phonics activity from your pack and don't forget to keep logging in to Lexia.
Picture
Numeracy

Please focus on adding today.  Please complete the next 2/3 pages in your addition booklet. If you would like an online activity to build your skills, try these:

Adding to 20 (Recommeded for spelling group 1)
https://www.mathplayground.com/number_bonds_20.html

To play the game, choose a number. You then have to form pairs of marbles/orbs that add to make that number (clue - if you cannot find a pair, fire the orb into space rather than adding it to the 'train' of orbs. Its tricky, but really fun!

Adding within 10 (Recommended for spelling group 2) https://www.topmarks.co.uk/addition/addition-to-10

Adding within 10 (Recommended for spelling group 3) https://pbskids.org/curiousgeorge/busyday/ten/

ICT

I have added a new topic to your Purple Mash homepage - it is called 'Under The Sea'.
Please log in and if you have time,  complete an art activities (don't forget to write a sentence!) or even use the diver mash cam: I love reading your clever messages!

Monday 1st June 2020

Good morning everyone!
Welcome to a new week and a new month in our virtual classroom!
May really flew in as we celebrated so many funny days together.
I am missing you all a lot but can tell from your photos that you are learning so much at home!

As usual, I'd like to start the week by looking back at the week in which we had a Bank Holiday, celebrated Paper Airplane day, Sellotape day, paperclip day and Water your flower day!   Thank you for sharing your photos with me!
Remember our 'Caught reading' photo challenge from Friday! I am going to try to get my own caught reading photo today too. Please send to the office as usual, I will put them together on Tuesday evening and see what ideas we have all come up with!
Picture
I would also like to mention two very special six year olds!
I picked up my diary when I was leaving your new packs in school and spotted two birthdays in our class!
I hope you both had lots of yummy cake and plenty of fun on your birthdays :)
Literacy

Today's new sound is '-ve'. You will often find this sound at the end of words.

You can watch Mr Thorne and Geraldine:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QN90XtjV_4k

This also explains the sound in a lovely visual way - great for making it 'stick'.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1VN7PLrvzk

  • Could you have a  '’ve' hunt like Geraldine? Look around the house or in your own books and see if you can find  the sound or objects that have the sound 've’ in their name. You could write a note and finish it 'with love'
  • Build 've’ words in lots of fun ways - magnetic letters, flash cards, chalk, paint... be creative!
  • Spelling group 1 and 2 - please complete a written phonics activity.
  • Lexia group, please complete a Literacy activity from your pack and a Lexia session today - Mrs Burns will be very pleased to see you logging in and working hard!
Picture
Numeracy
As it is Monday today, we are focusing on Number work.
Please complete 1/2 pages in your Number booklet.
For an online activity, click https://www.splashlearn.com/number-games-for-1st-graders and choose the first game: count groups of ten.  When counting forwards, we often hear a pause as pupils think of the next 'decuple' (eg 29...30, 49...50) so familiarity with counting in tens is very helpful.

Picture
Once you have finished your work, its time to celebrate Table Top Game day!
In your new home pack you will find a blank game board on which you can design your own game.
Maybe you will design a superhero game, or decorate it with your favourite animals or cartoon characters?
(Spelling Group 1 and 2, if you would prefer there is also a printed game in your pack- of course you can complete both if you want or save one for another day!)
If you come up with a great idea for your game, I'd love to see it!

Have fun everyone,  I will be back tomorrow with some more suggestions.
Stay safe and keep smiling!

Friday 29th May 2020

Picture

Good morning team! Friday at last - always our nicest day in school so lets make it a good day for home learning too!
This is the last Friday in May, so I am going to set you a weekend challenge!
May was 'Get Caught Reading' Month and also 'Photography Month'. We can combine the two for our challenge.
This weekend, choose your favourite book and ask an adult to 'catch you' reading it somewhere at home and take a picture. Maybe you will be reading to your teddies or a brother or sister? Maybe you will wear a funny costume? Maybe it will be dark and you will have to use a torch! Maybe you will be reading UNDER the table rather than at the table.
I can't wait to see your brilliant ideas - you can send them to the office info@dromaraps.org.

Here are my suggestions for today's activities: as always, please just do what you can.

Spellings/Sounds/Number Stories/Numbers
As it is Friday, please have a go at this weeks spellings or sounds.
Try your very best and see how many you can get correct.

Literacy - Writing Instructions

Today I would like you have a go at writing some instructions for 'How to grow you a sunflower'.
I have recorded a big book for you to listen to which might help to give you ideas: you can see it just below:

Click link for video - 'How to grow a sunflower'
Read by Miss Briggs
Picture
Spelling Group 1 and 2
Please try to write your own instructions for how to grow a sunflower.
Start with a list of what you will need, then try to write the instructions in order.
Take a new line for each instruction and remember to put a number at the start of each new instruction.
At the end you can draw a sunflower picture or diagram.
Group 3: Tell an adult the instructions for how to grow a sunflower.
Draw pictures to show the sequence and with adult help, label your drawings.

When you have finished, plant the sunflower seeds from your home pack (don't worry if you have planted them already!)
You can keep track of your sunflower growth in your sunflower diary.
Tomorrow is 'Water my plant' day, so don't forget to do just that!
Picture
Numeracy
On Friday we focus on Practical Numeracy.  You can work on with your Shape, Measure and Data Handling booklet or complete a measuring activity using the instructions below.  Could you create a table for your results?
If you wish, you can catch up on any of our online games from this week:
  • Hot air balloon activity - https://www.ictgames.com/mobilePage/balloon/index.html
  • Hit the button Halves -  https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button
  • Money game - https://www.doorwayonline.org.uk/activities/cashing-in/cashing-in.html
Friday is a great time to finish any activities from earlier this week so we can start fresh on Monday.

Golden Time
For Golden Time today, you could create some sunflower art or craft to celebrate planting our sunflowers!
There are some ideas below or you could create your own sunflower art: as always I would love to see what you come up with!
Don't forget our 'Caught Reading' photography challenge this weekend.

I will be back next week with more suggestions for you :)
Stay safe and keep smiling,

Good Morning Team!

I hope everyone is happy and healthy this morning!
Some fantastic paper plane, art and gardening pictures arriving this week: I am already looking forward to adding them to this weeks collage hall of fame!

In this week in May, as well as 'National Sellotape Day', people also celebrate 'National Paperclip day!'
I have recorded a special paperclip Science activity for you to try whenever you have completed your written work.
I think you will like it!

On to today's activity suggestions:  as always, please just do what you can.

Literacy- Vocabulary, Grammar and Punctuation

Please look at page 42 of your Grammar and Punctuation textbook. It is about using a capital letter for days of the week.
Remember the little ditty: you should use a capital letter for 'p
eople, places, days and months'.
Please complete the tasks in your home writing book. If you are feeling really clever, you can have a go at page 43.

Numeracy
Today I would like you to work on 'Money': complete 2/3 pages in your Money booklet.
If you would have completed your money booklet or would like an online activity, this is great: an adult can help you to set it up as there are quite a few choices- start with coins up to 10p. If you find this easy you can try the trickier levels.
https://www.doorwayonline.org.uk/activities/cashing-in/cashing-in.html
Picture
Sight Words
Please continue to work through your sight word book to increase reading fluency and confidence.

World Around Us: Paperclip Science
If you have time, I have recorded a video to help you celebrate Paperclip day this week!
It is a Science investigation.  To complete the investigation you will need
  • Paperclips
  • A dish, cup or bowl of water
  • Kitchen roll or tissue paper.
Have a go and see how you get on!

Good Morning everyone!
Wasn't the weather yesterday absolutely beautiful?
I hope you were able to get outside to test your paper airplane creations!

Another stationery celebration today: it is Sellotape day!
I have added a very sticky Sellotape day story for you below.

Picture
Click to listen>    "Stuck"  read by Miss Briggs

What a funny story!
I would love it if you could add an ending to the story: how would you help Floyd to get all of the people, animals and things out of the tree? Would you throw your paper airplane up? Would you climb up a rope? Maybe you would shake the tree! Could you write a sentence and draw a colourful picture to show what happens or tell an adult your idea?

On to today's activities! As always, just do what you can.
***note for parents: I am preparing the next home packs - if you require new booklets or activities to reinforce a particular area please email the office before 11am so I can include these in the new pack: everyone is completing activities at different rates so I want to ensure everyone gets what they need- Thank you***

Picture
Literacy: Comprehension
Comprehension group: Today I would like you to try the next activity in your comprehension book 'The Lion and the Mouse.'  You will find it on page 31 of your textbook.  You will be reading a  traditional story and then answering some questions. Remember, full stops, capital letters and try to write whole sentences.
You do not have to write the questions out.
Spelling Group 2: Please choose a Literacy or phonics activity from your home pack to build 'sounding out' skills.
IEP/Lexia group: Please complete a Lexia session and work on an alphabet activity from your home pack.

Numeracy
Today I would like you to focus on subtraction.  Please complete the next few pages in your subtraction book.
Please have a go at the 'Halves' option on hit the button.  We have worked hard on 'doubles' so hopefully this will help you!
https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

Good morning Year Two team!
Today is is National Paper Airplane Day!  Have you ever made a paper airplane before?
If not: get excited as there is a treat in store for you when you have finished today's written work!
Let's get started!

***note for parents: I am preparing the next home packs - if you require new booklets or activities to reinforce a particular area please email the office today or tomorrow morning so I can include these in the pack***
Literacy - Phonics

If you were having some time out for Bank Holiday yesterday, please have a look back for the activity relating to 'soft g' and have a go.  If you have already completed the activity, it would be helpful to do a little phonics revision today.
We would usually have completed some tests around this time in school so would have been looking over any sounds you were unsure of in school together.

Spelling group one - get an adult to call these sounds out and see if you can write them down.
Then get an adult to write them and see if you can read them. If there are any you are unsure of, revise them together by reading or writing them, using Purple Mash - (Log in to Purple Mash. Click on the teacher’s easel ‘Reading and Writing’, Scroll to Phonics phase 3 Cloze) or use 'Forest Phonics' for reinforcement (those highlighted appear on Forest Phonics.
Picture
Picture
Spelling group two - get an adult to call out these words and see if you can write them down.
See if you can sound out and read the words.  If a particular middle sound is proving difficult, focus on revising it - there are some games here that may help! https://www.topmarks.co.uk/Search.aspx?q=cvc

Sounds group - try to read/write all of the intial sounds a-z.  Try again but with letter names this time.
Please revise any that are proving difficult and keep reinforcing correct letter formation.
I hope that the games you will find here will prove helpful - https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zf2yf4j

Literacy: Handwriting

In school, we have been working on upper case/capital letter formation.
Please revise capital and lower-case letters Aa- Ss, paying careful attention to formation, position and proportion.
This week, I would like you to work on capital T and Capital U

Capital T - Please emphasise that this letter musy be tall - compare the size to lower case letter r and remind your child that it is essential to show the height difference when writing.
Capital U - A nice easy one shape-wise!  Very similar to lower case letter u- but again, emphasise the height difference.

Try to make up your own letter pattern, or an adult could make a capital/lower case letter pattern for you to copy. It is fun to use felt tips, twistables and chalk to practice too!
Can you spy capital letter T or U in any of your books at home? Can you remember when we use capital letters?
Numeracy
Today I would like you to focus on adding.
Please complete the next 2/3 pages in your addition booklet.
If you would like to complete an online activity, this one is very grown up and will test your skills as you have to add not two, but THREE numbers together! There are three levels - start with the easiest and see how you get on!

STEM/Technology and Engineering
Picture
As it is National Paper Airplane day I would love it if you could learn to make a paper airplane!
Some Mums and Dads and DEFINITELY some big brothers and sisters will have their own way to do this. Some will be experts!
There are lots of different methods and designs you can learn-this one is a classic design named 'The Dart'
 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6yw1qQNf8_4
You can experiment with using different sized and thicknesses of paper and see if you can make very sharp creases. Test to see how far you can get your plane to fly.
You can decorate your plane too!
As always, I would LOVE to see your creations - info@dromaraps.org
Have fun, stay safe and keep smiling!

Monday  25th May 2020

Good morning everyone!
I hope you had a fun weekend, whether it was cosy indoor fun due to the high winds with brothers, sisters and pets (hello, Fluffy the hamster!) or out and about for local adventures- imagine climbing all the way to the top of Slieve Croob! WOW!
Thank you for the wonderful pictures, they always make my day :)

It is Bank Holiday Monday, so I will not set a full day's work, but instead am going to suggest a few short tasks. If you are having a day off you can catch up on these later in the week.

Here are my suggestions!

Get up and Go!
For your 'Get up and Go' today, have a go at this 'Zumba' dance.  I think you will recognise the music!
This song is usually in the playlist for our Sportathon in school so I really enjoyed having a go at it at home and thinking about how fun it is when the whole school is out dancing in the sun!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymigWt5TOV8

Literacy - Phonics: Soft 'g' sound
Please focus on the soft 'g' sound - this is new and quite tricky so please don't worry if it doesn't stick straight away.

Please watch Geraldine and Mr Thorne’s phonics programme.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xL4WykIuCRw

I thought this song was very helpful (there are exceptions to every rule, of course!)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKNTOpHOmtg

>Spelling Group 1/2: There is a soft/hard 'g' sorting game in your home pack to complete
>Lexia group, please choose a phonics activity from your home pack and log in to complete Lexia session today.
Numeracy- Number
As it is Monday, we are focusing on Numbers today. No written task as it is Bank Holiday- but Mental Maths is just as important.    I would like you to try some counting challenges!

> How far can you count in 1s?  In 2s? In 5's? In 10s?
> Try the above, but this time start at different numbers eg: 'Count in 5s from 15' etc
> Can you count down from 10? 20? 50? 100? .....400?
> Count up and down from given numbers eg: 'count forwards from 15 to 40' 'count backwards from 60 to 30'
> Play 'what is the number before' 'what is the number after' and 'what is the number between - make the numbers as big or as small as needed.
> Play 'guess my number' with a grown up.  The grown up has to think of a number and write it down then cover it. You have to ask questions to try to guess the number.  Eg - is it bigger than 5? Is it smaller than 20? Is it an odd number or an even number?
Start with a small range first- for example guess the number between 0 and 10, then make it as tricky as you like. Switch and the grown up has to guess your number too!
(Clue- if you find this challenging, keep the range small and write out a number line, then cross out 'eliminate' numbers as you ask questions to find the answer.

You can do these counting activities when out in the car or on your daily exercise- keep those bodies and brains healthy!
AND RELAX!

If you would like a creative activity to stay busy with, maybe you would like to try one of my absolute favourite hobbies - rock painting and decorating (you might have spotted my hedgehog rock in the 'Things to look forward to' picture last week!)

We often find colourful pebbles that children and adults have decorated when we are out and about on our bikes in Belfast - we found this beautiful one at Hazelbank at the weekend when out cycling!

You can use paint, felt tips, markers or sharpies, chalk or even bright crayons to decorate rocks.
If you coat them in PVA glue or clear varnish they become really shiny too. You can even add wiggly eyes and make your own pet rock! There are some examples below - you just need a pebble and your big imaginations.
Stay safe and keep smiling!

Friday 22nd May 2020

Good Morning everyone!
Friday at last! Always our nicest day in school: lets make it a fun learning day at home too!

22nd of May is 'Maritime Day'. 'Maritime' means anything to do with the sea.
This is perfect timing as we will be starting our new topic 'The Seashore' very soon.
To celebrate Maritime day you will have a Maritime themed activity to complete in  'Golden Time' when you have finished today's work.

Here are my suggestions for today's home learning (Remember our checklist and as always, just do what you can) :)

Spellings/Sounds/Number Stories/Numbers
Have a go at this weeks spellings or sounds. Try your very best!

Literacy- Listening
I have recorded a story for you today, it is called 'The Train Ride'.
Listen carefully as it will give you some ideas for today's written Literacy.

Picture
Click to listen>
"The Train Ride" read by Miss Briggs

Literacy - Writing
In the story the child goes to see their Grandmother at the seaside.
I would like you to have a go at writing your own Train Ride story today.
It is a 'made up' story rather than a recount of a train ride that you have been on, so you will have to think of a character name and where you would like your character to go on the train. What will they see?

Here is my example:
"One day a girl named Abbie went on a train ride.  She was going to the fairground to meet her best friend Katy!  She looked out of the window and saw forests, rivers and lakes.  When the train stopped at the fairground, Abbie met Katy. They had the best day ever".

Group 1 and 2 - your story can be shorter or longer than mine. Try to sound out tricky words and write words you already know all by yourself.   At the end, read your story to someone at home and draw a 'wow' picture.
Group 3 - You can tell an adult your story and they will write it for, you can copy the sentence or sentences and draw a 'wow' picture.
Picture
Numeracy - Data Handling

For todays Numeracy activity, please log in to Purple Mash and scroll to find the '2count' activity.
There are three choices for graphs to make - you can choose one or make all three.
It might help to write the information on a piece of paper so you don't have to keep switching between screens.

Favourite Colour Graph.
There are 18 pupils in the Year Two class. The pupils did a survey about their favourite colours. Here are the results.
Use the results to make a graph.
What are the most and least popular colours?
Check that the results add up to 18 and don't forget to save your work!

Blue -  3 children   Gold - 1 child   Green - 2 children   Orange - 0 children
Pink - 4 children  Purple- 3 children  Red -  5 children Yellow - 0 children

Other
Friday is great day for 'finishing off' so we can have a fresh start on Monday.
- Check your Senses Investigation booklet to see if anything needs completed before we start our new Topic
- Complete a page in your Sight words booklet
- Catch up on any online activities you did not get a chance to try or that you would like to revisit :)

GOLDEN TIME!

As it is National Maritime Day, I thought I would offer you a maritime themed craft activity today.
You will be able to make a hat for a Ships Captain, or a Pirate hat using just newspaper and colours.
Here is a video that shows you how to do it- an adult can help with the tricky folds.

https://youtu.be/0_tDKdXhv0g

Decorate with crayons or felt tips - use a ruler to draw blue stripes to make it a Captain's hat, or use markers and cut out shapes to make it a pirate hat.
It also makes an excellent hedgehog tent!
Don't forget to send your pictures to the office.

Have a wonderful weekend: stay safe and keep smiling!

Good morning everyone!

A special day today! It is National Notebook day!
In your home pack you will find your own little notebook.
You can decide what to use it for, here are a few ideas:
  • * Writing short notes to say Thank you or I love you to someone at home
  • * Practising your doodles
  • * Doing fancy writing - dotty, curly, capitals or bubbles
  • * Or use the pages when making a  'Things to look forward to jar'. (we are  doing this in my home- its great for discussion and a real mood-booster!)

Instructions

*   Find an old jar- one with a lid is best.
Make sure it is clean and dry.
*   Make a label saying 'Things to  look forward to' and stick it on your jar

*  We aren't getting out and about as much as usual at the moment, so each time you think of something you would like to do in future, write in on a page from your notebook and put it in the jar. You will soon have a collection of lovely things to look forward to!
* Decorate your jar with cut out shapes or stickers.
* Brothers and sisters, Mums and Dads can add ideas to the jar too.

Maybe you could do this when you have completed today's work or over the weekend :)

On to today's tasks!
As always, just do what you can.

Comprehension group: Today I would like you to try your next comprehension, ‘It was a Cold, Dark Night’.
You will find it on page 25  of your Comprehension textbook.  I've been looking forward to this comprehension - I bet you will be able to guess why when you read it!

Don’t forget: sentences, capital letters and full stops: you don't have to write the questions out.
If you feel able, have a go at the activities on page 26.

Group 2: Please choose a Literacy or phonics activity from your home pack to build 'sounding out' skills.
Lexia group
: Please choose a Literacy or phonics activity from your home pack to build 'sounding out' skill and complete a Lexia session.

Numeracy
Please complete some Numeracy Topic work today (Money or Time, 1 or 2 pages in booklets).
If you would like to complete an online activity, I recommend this: lots of options to make it trickier or easier!

Wednesday 20th May 2020

Good morning gang!

Today's date is 20th of May 2020 - International Weights and Measures day!

Weighing is one of our favourite things to do in school and I can see from the photos that have been sent in that its a favourite thing at home too, as it allows you to build, investigate...and even bake cakes!

Today I am going to be offering you some activities related to weighing for when you have finished your written work.  Lets get started! As always- just do what you can.
Literacy: Handwriting

In school, we have been working on upper case/capital letter formation.
Please revise capital and lower-case letters Aa- Qq, paying careful attention to formation, position and proportion.
This week, I would like you to work on capital R and capital S

Capital R - Please emphasise the importance of starting this letter from the top and remember it must be tall - compare the size to lower case letter r and remind your child that it is essential to show the height difference when writing.
Capital S - A nice easy one shape-wise!  Very similar to lower case letter s- but again, emphasise the height difference.

Try to make up your own letter pattern, or an adult could make a capital/lower case letter pattern for you to copy. It is fun to use felt tips, twistables and chalk to practice too!
Can you spy capital letter R or S in any of your books at home?

Literacy: Phonics

Spelling group 1 and 2: Online 'ew' activity.
Forest phonics: https://www.ictgames.com/mobilePage/forestPhonics/index.html
Absolutely excellent for revising so many of our sounds- one to bookmark!  If you scroll to the right you will find the activity for 'ew'
Group 3/sounds - Viking phonics - building CVC words: https://www.ictgames.com/mobilePage/viking/index.html

Phonics Dictation:
Spelling Group 1 and 2: you could have a go at dictation: the first is easy, the second is trickier.
Ask and adult to read out loud slowly for you and see if you can sound out and write the words.

Easier:'Sip a cup of milk. Sip a cup of pop. Sip a cup of mud.'
Trickier: 'Wink wink, clap my hands. Blink blink, bang the drum! Wink clap blink bang!'

Numeracy
Today I would like you to focus on subtraction.  Please complete the next few pages in your subtraction book.
If you would like a subtraction mental maths game, this one is fun- adjust the settings as required.

I hope you are well and had lots of fun doing your Popcorn World Around Us activity yesterday, thank you for sending such lovely photos. It was a bit of a trick as the popcorn was sweet AND salty!

The third Tuesday in May is International dinosaur day! If you have time when you have finished your work you will be able to follow instructions which will help you learn to draw dinosaurs.

Lets get started with today's tasks- as always, just do what you can!

Literacy - Listening Activity
I have recorded a story for you today. It is called 'The Lonely Beast'.
Relax and enjoy! :)
Literacy - Phonics

Monday 18th May 2020

Good morning team, welcome to a fresh new week in our online classroom!
Your new home learning packs will be available to collect from the office today (Monday 18th) 3:00 - 3:15pm

I would like to start the new week by looking at some highlights from the week that we celebrated 'Eat what you want day', 'Share a Story Month', 'International Nurses Day', 'Chicken Dance Day' and 'World Shades Day'. I've popped some of the highlights into the collages below, I hope you love them as much as I do! Thank you for all of the wonderful photos and for taking the time to email with requests for materials for your new packs.

Picture
May 18th is National 'No Dirty Dishes Day!' ( I wonder if a Mum or Dad invented that one!)
Today, ask Mum or Dad if they would like you to help to wash or dry some dishes.  Its a really grown up skill and would be a very kind thing to do. Remember: kindness costs us nothing and means everything :)

Picture
On to today's tasks! As always, just do what you can!

On Mondays we like to develop recall and writing skills by writing about our weekend adventures.
As we have been staying safe at home, we haven't been out and about as much as normal, so instead I would like you to write about a time you remember feeling really happy.

You can write one, two...or more sentences. Here is my example.

"A time I felt really happy was when Year Two won class of the week in Assembly. Everyone cheered and we got to keep a trophy in the classroom.  The pupils had a night off homework. It was brilliant!"

Literacy: Grammar and Punctuation

We normally do our phonics and spelling work on a Monday, but as you will not have your new home pack until later  today, let's switch things around a little this week.

Please look at page 38 of your Grammar and Punctuation textbook. It is about using a capital letter for names of people.  When I was in school my clever teacher always said you must use a capital letter for 'people, places, days and months': we said it over and over again and I have never forgotten that rule!
Please complete the tasks in your home writing book. If you are feeling really clever, you can have a go at page 39.
Maybe you could write a list of your friend's names being sure to use capital letters.

Numeracy
Please complete some number work today - one to two pages in your home pack.
Mental Maths activity here if you wish – I love this one!
https://www.ictgames.com/mobilePage/whackAMole/index.html

You can set the game to count forward or backwards in 1s,2s, 5s or 10s. (its a good one for big brothers and sisters too!)

World Around Us/ICT

In your new home pack you will find a Popcorn World Around Us activity.
To complete it, open the bag of popcorn I have sent for you.
Use all of your senses to find out about  and describe the Popcorn: how does it LOOK, SMELL, TASTE, SOUND, FEEL? Try to fill in the page about popcorn. On the blank side you could draw yourself enjoying the popcorn! I'd love to see a photo - Info@dromaraps.org

I have pinned a new topic to your 'Purple Mash' homepage, it is all about colours!
There are some very cool art effects which will be new to you in this topic: if you do a drawing please click on the ABC and write a sentence below. Later this week I will be giving you the information you need to complete the 2Count Colour, Eye colour and Hair colour graphs.

If anyone is having trouble logging in or saving work, please let me know by emailing the office as I will hopefully be able to assist with instructions. 😊

Stay safe and keep smiling!

Friday 15th May 2020

Fridays are always our most fun day in school, so lets make it a brilliant home learning day too! :)

15th of May is World 'Shades' day! Did you know 'Shades' is another word for sunglasses?
I made these funny pictures of Hmph in some funky shades for you.
If you like, you could use the 'Selfie' cam in Purple Mash to snap a pic of yourself in your Shades and write a message to tell me which of his sunglasses you like best! (Log in to Purple Mash> click classroom door> click dressing up box>click selfie option and don't forget to save in your tray :)
Here are my suggestions for today's activities (Remember our checklist and as always, just do what you can) :)

Spellings/Sounds/Number Stories/Numbers
Have a go at this weeks spellings or sounds. Try your very best!

Literacy
I have recorded a story for you today, it is named The teeny Weeny Tadpole:

Click to listen>  'The Teeny Weeny Tadpole' read by Miss Briggs

Picture
In the story, the Teeny Weeny Tadpole grew into a big strong frog!
In real life, this would be called the Life Cycle of a frog.
You can see two pictures showing this below, one is more detailed than the other.

I have included an example of 'Explanation writing' too. This is what you are going to have a go at today!

Spelling Group 1 and 2 - You are going to write an explanation of the Frog Life Cycle.
Talk with an adult about the sequence of how frogspawn turns into a tadpole, froglet then a frog.
Explanation writing is different to stories, poems or instructions as it has these features:

-A title
-Factual information written in order to explain something
-Specific language (in this case, things like frogspawn, tadpole, froglet...)
-A diagram or picture with captions which helps to clarify the explanation

Write some sentences in your home writing book to explain the Frog Life cycle. You can sound out tricky words or use the words in the pictures below. Try to draw and label a picture. You can do it!

Sounds group/IEP group - look at the pictures below.  Discuss the frog life cycle with an adult.  You can copy sentences scribed by an adult or draw pictures to explain the life cycle.  Please complete Lexia session.
Numeracy
Friday is our practical/Topic Numeracy day. In your home pack you will find the 'Shape, Measure and Data Handling' booklet. You have likely almost completed it! If not, please do so or work towards completing it today.
When finished, you can revisit any of this week's Numeracy ICT games if you wish!

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/subtraction-grids
https://mathsframe.co.uk/en/resources/resource/116/telling-the-time

Other:
Friday is a great day for 'Finishing off':
-Complete remaining Sight tasks in Senses booklet
- If you have not yet had a chance, check in with the Topic on Purple Mash. There will be a new topic next week.

Golden Time

Craft choice: follow the instructions to make a Toilet roll frog:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WosGNLvs_Gc
Or
Art Choice: cut and stick to make your own Frog party! I drew around a cup, a glass and a pritt stick lid to make my circles. If you do not have coloured paper you can cut out the shapes from white paper and colour them instead. I had a lot of fun drawing the bodies!Whatever you get up to, remember you can send your pictures to the office :)

Have a lovely weekend!

 Good Morning everyone!

A busy week so far!   Whether you have been working on your booklets, website tasks or a combination of the two, thank you for your efforts! I am currently putting your new packs together. If you have completed any booklets or need reinforcement of a particular area, please could you contact the office info@dromaraps.org so I can enclose the next booklet in your child's pack (if possible, send a photo of the front cover of the completed booklet to ensure I provide the next one in sequence as everyone is working at their own pace!)

Have you ever done the Chicken Dance before? It is brilliant fun!
When you have finished today's work, you can learn it!
 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npp1z32idrc
If you are on Facetime or Skype with Nanna and Papa you could teach them it too!  :)

Picture
Literacy: Grammar and Punctuation

Please have a look at the grammar/punctuation work in your textbook p36.
It is about using an exclamation mark.  You can complete the work in your Home Writing book. Remember neat writing, capital letters and try to use the exclamation marks! If you want to have a go at p37 please feel free -
if you are feeling really clever, why not the third section: I would love to read your ideas for two shocking sentences!)

Sounds group/Lexia group- please have a go at sounding out and writing these CVC words: an adult can call them out one slowly sound at a time. Complete a written phonics task in your home pack.

Wednesday  13th May 2020

Picture
Good Morning everybody!
Wednesday already! Half way through a busy week - and almost half way through the month too!
Did you know that May is National Share a Story Month?
I hope you have been sharing lots of stories at home together, its one of our favourite things to do in school!
Maybe before bed tonight you could find some time to read a favourite story together- a PJ reading party! Remember that as we grow up, familiar stories are just as important as new stories (even grown ups have their favourites: mine is Matilda!)

(a little note for Mums and Dads/guardians: please, please try not to feel overwhelmed - home schooling and distance learning are new for all of us and everyone is spinning a lot of plates just now!
For some families, the booklets will be best, for some the variety of the online activities will work, maybe a mixture of the two works for you.
Some days it may be enough to just read and count in a relaxed way together.   We are all in this together.
As always, just do what you can)

Here are my recommendations for today's activities:
I have recorded a video for you to watch today. It is a big book called 'Senses in Living things'.
Listen carefully! When you have finished today's work, there is a quiz for you to have a go at!
Get up and Go!

For today's Get up and Go, try this awesome dance activity!
There are some tough moves in it, but we are DANCE EXPERTS!
I recommend that you try it twice- you'll find it easy the second time round:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQ9q4U2P3ig

Literacy

Comprehension group: Today I would like you to try your next comprehension, ‘Your Nose’. You will find it on page 23 (not 22! Oops!) of your Comprehension textbook. Today you will be reading a report. This comprehension relates to our Senses topic.
Don’t forget, full sentences, capital letters and full stops: you don't have to write the questions out. If you feel able, have a go at the activities on page 24.
Middle group: Please choose a Literacy or phonics activity from your home pack to build 'sounding out' skills.
IEP/Lexia group: Please choose a Literacy or phonics activity from your home pack to build 'sounding out' skill and complete a Lexia session.
Numeracy
Today I would like you to focus on subtraction.  Please complete the next few pages in your subtraction book.
This online game is great for skill-building- choose 'subtraction' and then your level of difficulty.
https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/subtraction-grids
And finally: THE QUIZ!

Think about the information you saw in the Big Book video and have a go at The Quiz below! GOOD LUCK!

Good morning gang!
Amazing work yesterday on our 'Eat what you like day' Purple Mash task!
I would definitely visit a restaurant opened by these chefs! Lots of healthy and sweet treat ideas. Well done!

Picture
12th of May is International Nurses day.  Nurses have been in the news a lot recently as they have been working very hard to keep everyone safe and happy. Some of the Mums and Dads in our class and school are Nurses. We are grateful for everything they do for us!

To celebrate International Nurses day, people are being encouraged to shine lights and torches from their windows at 8:30pm (this might be past bed time so it is okay to do it earlier if you need to!)

You might remember in our 'People Who Help Us' topic we learned about a famous nurse, Florence Nightingale who was known as 'The Lady with the Lamp'.  The shining lights will commemorate Florence and thank all of the Nurses for their hard work.  Maybe you could tell someone at home about how Florence Nightingale made sure hospitals were clean and safe.

On to today's tasks: as always: just do what you can.

Literacy: Handwriting

In school, we have been working on upper case/capital letter formation.
Please revise capital and lower-case letters Aa- Oo, paying careful attention to formation, position and proportion.
This week, I would like you to work on capital P and capital Q.

Capital P - Please emphasise the importance of starting this letter from the top and remember it must be tall - it stands on the line (unlike lower case p which extends below the line- it is helpful to write both so size and placement can be compared)
Capital Q - Remember to start tall, at the top.  Compare the size and placement of upper and lower case Q/q.
Try to make up your own letter pattern, or an adult could make a capital/lower case letter pattern for you to copy. It is fun to use felt tips, twistables and chalk to practice too!b
Can you spy capital letter Ps or Qs in any of your books at home?

Literacy: Phonics
In Purple Mash, there are some excellent Phonics games which can help you to work on this week’s sounds.
Group 1 – Log in to Purple Mash. Click on the teacher’s easel ‘Reading and Writing’, Scroll to Phonics phase 3 Cloze, click ‘oi/er' activity.
Group 2 - Log in to Purple Mash. Click on the teacher’s easel ‘Reading and Writing’, Scroll to Phonics phase 2 Cloze, click 'ck', ‘ck/e' 'ur' or 'ck e u r' activity.
Group 3/sounds - Please complete a lexia session.

Phonics Dictation:
Spelling Group 1 and 2: you could have a go at dictation: the first is easy, the second is trickier.
Ask and adult to read out loud slowly for you and see if you can sound out and write the words.

Easier:'I am a cat. I am wet. Let me in!'
Trickier:"Bring three things said the King! A cat that can sing. A dog with two wings. A rat that can spring!"

Good morning team, welcome to a new week in our online classroom!
I would like to start the new week by looking at some highlights from the week that we celebrated Star Wars Day, Bike to School(!) week, Doodle Day and a Bank Holiday!
There were so many amazing pictures and pieces of work  I had to make two collages! You have all been very busy. Thank you to the Mums and Dads for taking the time to send photos: its so good for us to see you happy, healthy and learning at home 😊

11th May is National ‘Eat what you want day’ (Honestly!)!

In school we talk about how important it is to eat food that helps you to grow, feel good and stay healthy.  We are sensible about the amounts of different types of food we eat because, like cars, you’ve got to have the right type of fuel to make your body and brain run and play well! 😊

One of my favourite authors wrote a story about a boy who ate some things he really should not have!
You can watch and read the story here:    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXymkLXR6VQ

I hope you do not eat any books on 'Eat what you want day' (maybe you could have a small treat to celebrate though!)

On to today's tasks - as always, just do what you can.

On Monday we take time to work on our writing skills. I have a Purple Mash writing challenge for you today!
I would like you to write about what you would eat if you could have ANYTHING on Eat what you want day.  You can see my example below.

To access this activity:

Log in to Purple Mash
In the main classroom, click on the door to go outside.
Click on the dressing up box.
Scroll to find the ‘Chef’ Mash Cam.
You can use a webcam to add a picture (click on the camera), or you can upload a picture already stored on your computer or device (click on the landscape icon) both at the top middle of the screen.
Type what you would like to eat. Remember to save it in your tray so I can read it

Friday 8th May 2020

Good morning team! Happy Bank Holiday Friday!

As it is a Bank Holiday today we will not be setting our usual work tasks.
I know everyone is doing their very best to stay at home to stay safe and to keep others safe too, I wanted to leave you a fun art challenge!

First, watch the story "The Day the Crayons Quit" on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=489micE6eHU

Then you can choose an art activity:

Either - use as many colours as you can to create a very bright and colourful 'Wow' picture like Duncan's.  Maybe a rainforest with many animals? A circus? A wildflower meadow? Or an undersea scene with many different coloured fish? See if you can use every one of your colours!

Or

Colour Scavenger Hunt and Flatlay art challenge.
Pick your favourite colour.  You have ten minutes to find as many things in the house that are your chosen colour!
Now the fun bit - arrange them in a creative way on a white or coloured background to make some 'flatlay art' (a few ideas below - I had a go using my favourite colour, purple: you can see the picture below- it was so much fun!).
Get an adult to take a picture of your colour collection creation.
Big brothers and sisters are very welcome to have a go too: I'd love to see what you come up with!
Photos can be emailed to Info@dromaraps.org as always.

Stay safe and keep smiling :)

 Thursday  7th May 2020

Thank you to the Mums and Dads for everything you are doing to support our amazing pupils in a strange and busy time- we know everyone is doing their best.
Wednesday 6th of May is right in the middle of 'Bike to School' week!
We can't be in school together at the moment but if the weather is nice outside when you have finished today's work you could go outside on your bike, scooter, or Flicker. (remember to be very safe!)

On to today's tasks - as always, just do what you can :)

Literacy

Good Morning everyone!
5th May is International Doodle day!
Drawing is one of my favourite hobbies and I know you love it too.

I have left you a really fun outdoor activity to do for when you complete today’s work: there is a clue in the picture to the right ->

On to today's tasks - as always, just do what you can :)

Literacy: Dora's Eggs

Listen to the big book 'Dora's Eggs'. Pay careful attention to the animals that Dora visits in the story.

When you have finished the story, please have a go at drawing a ‘Story Map’.
You might remember doing this for the story ‘The Jolly Postman!’

Spelling Group 1: Try to write a sentence to tell each part of the story on the map(see my example below)
Spelling Group 2: Try to write a caption to label each part of the story map eg ‘Dora’s hen house’ ‘Doffy Ducks pond’ ‘Pennys Pig pen’.
Spelling Group 3/IEP group: A grown up can help you to label the different animals or places in the story.
You could cut out a picture of Dora and move it around your map. Tell someone at home the story.

On Monday we take time to work on our writing skills by writing about the things we have been up to. Think about what you did over the last week. Did you have superhero afternoon or do some Science? Maybe you drew a rocket or played outside?
Could you write some sentences about your favourite memory? Remember to sound out tricky words, use capital letters, finger spaces and full stops and to draw a ''wow' picture.  Read your writing to someone at home.

Literacy – Phonics

Please focus on sound 'aw'
Maybe you can show everyone at home Geraldine the Giraffe's phonics programme?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xvdbR6g060

You could try blending your new sound to read these words:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPbWOUqdnjs

  • Could you have an 'aw' hunt like Geraldine? Look around the house or in your own books and see if you can find the sound or objects that have the sound 'aw' in their name. Write a list of 'aw' words.
  • Build 'aw' words in lots of fun ways - magnetic letters, flash cards, chalk, paint... be creative!
  • Twinkl have some very good resources for the 'aw' sound if you require extra practice:
https://www.twinkl.com/resource/cfe-l-526395-aw-sound-activity-stations
  • Lexia group, please complete a Lexia session today

Numeracy
Please complete some number work today - the next few pages in your Number book in the home pack.
Mental Maths activity– you can make it easier or trickier as required!
https://www.ictgames.com/mobilePage/countingCaterpillar/index.html

ICT
I have pinned a new topic to your 'Purple Mash' homepage, it is all about 'Feelings.'
You will see it as soon as you log in in the top right hand corner of the screen. The activities this week are slideshows, jigsaws, pairs, a selfie cam (try to write a sentence for me to read!) and art activities.
If you have not completed any Purple Mash activities yet please have a go this week.
If you are having trouble logging in or saving work, please let me know by emailing the office
😊

And as promised – if you have time, you can have a go at drawing Baby Yoda when you have completed your work.
Keep smiling!

Friday 1st May 2020

Picture
Good morning everyone!
Its Friday 1st of May, which is 'International Space Day!'

The planet Venus has been in the news this week because you can see it in the night sky even if you do not have a telescope. When there is a night with no clouds, ask an adult to help you to find the direction 'West' and look up to the sky just after sunset.  You will see what looks like a very bright star, but it is actually the planet Venus!
When you have finished your work today there is a Space art/craft activity.

Here are my suggestions for today's activities (Remember our checklist and as always, just do what you can) :)

Spellings/Sounds/Number Stories/Numbers
Have a go at this weeks spellings or sounds. Try your very best!

Literacy
The book I would like to share with you today is called ‘Lets Have fun together’.  It is set in Northern Ireland!
You can read it online here:

You can listen to the story here if you prefer:
http://www.nicurriculum.org.uk/curriculum_microsite/TSPC/dep/media/listen_and_think/year2/4_Lets_Have_Fun/index.html

In the book the children play lots of games together. Think about your favourite games to play with your friends. In your home writing book please write sentences about what you like to play and who you like to play with, for example: 'I like to play outside. My favourite game is 'catch'. I like it because we all get to join in'.

Numeracy
Friday is our practical/Topic Numeracy day. In your new home pack you will find the 'Shape, Measure and Data Handling' booklet. Please have a look at pages 23 and 24: this is about digital times.
Complete the pages and have a look around your house to see if there are any watches, clocks or devices that show digital times.  You can revisit your favourite online Numeracy games from this week if you want.

Other:
Friday is a great day for 'Finishing off':
-Complete remaining 'Taste' tasks in Senses booklet
-Finish off any 'Superhero Tasks'
- If you have not yet had a chance, check in with the 'All About Me' Topic on Purple Mash. There will be a new topic next week.

Friday  Golden Time!

Have fun and remember you can send photos to the office if you wish! :)

Thursday 30th April 2020

Good morning!
I have found a very funny celebration for today - it is National Raisin day! (Honestly!)

This made me think of my all-time favourite Science experiment: dancing raisins!
You can see how it works here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mEGCvj977_A

Later this term we will be working on 'Explanation writing'. This is new for us.
When you have watched the video, try to explain to someone at home why the raisins dance.
Maybe you can try it out when it is a little easier for Mums and Dads to get to the shops!

Terrific work coming in this week: poems, superheroes and real life science! Well done gang!

Picture

Here are my suggestions for today's activities (Remember our checklist and as always, just do what you can) :)

April 29th is 'World Dance Day.'

You are all brilliant dancers and we have had so much fun learning cool new moves this year:  Scottish dancing in the P.E, our Christmas play dances (remember 'We're going shopping?'), Irish dancing in our classroom on St Patricks day and 'The Locomotion' on 80's day!
Here is a link to a dance that I think you will love! You could try it as your 'Get up and Go' when you finish today's work.

You could discuss these questions together:
- Which part of your body do you taste with? Think carefully!
- What are your favourite and least favourite tastes?
- Can you name something that is sweet? salty? bitter?

***If one of your booklets have run out please let me know by emailing the office today or tomorrow morning so I can ensure to include some more resources for that particular area in your next home pack***

Tuesday 28th April 2020

Picture
Good morning team! I hope you are well today.

28th of April is SUPERHERO DAY!
There are all sorts of superheroes: the ones we see in cartoons and films, the ones we read about in stories, and the real-life superheroes who look after us so well, like doctors, nurses and our lovely Mums and Dads!
At the bottom of today's post I have added some suggestions for superhero activities you could have a go at when you have completed today's work (including a very cool Mash cam!)

Here are my recommendations for activities to complete today: as always, please just do what you can

Literacy
Handwriting

In school, we have been working on upper case/capital letter formation.
Please revise capital and lower-case letters Aa- Ll, paying careful attention to formation, position and proportion. We have already completed letter M in school: its a tricky one as pupils tend to start at the bottom rather than the top - please reinforce this at home before focusing on todays letter - Nn (short video showing formation here-
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ib6h2AiLxFs)
Please emphasise the importance of starting at the top.
Try to make up your own letter pattern, or an adult could make a capital/lower case letter pattern for you to copy. It is fun to use felt tips, twistables and chalk to practice too! Can you spy capital letter N in any of your books at home?

Purple Mash Phonics

In Purple Mash, there are some excellent Phonics games which can help you to work on this week’s sounds.
Group 1 – Log in to Purple Mash. Click on the teacher’s easel ‘Reading and Writing’, Scroll to Phonics phase 3 Cloze, click ‘ar /or’ activity.
Group 2 - Log in to Purple Mash. Click on the teacher’s easel ‘Reading and Writing’, Scroll to Phonics phase 2 Cloze, click ‘s a t p I n m n g' or 'c k' activity
Group 3/sounds - Please complete a lexia session.

Phonics Dictation:
Spelling Group 1 and 2: you could have a go at dictation: the first is easy, the second is trickier.
Ask and adult to read out loud slowly for you and see if you can sound out and write the words.

Picture
Numeracy
Addition
Today I would like you to focus on addition activities – please complete one or two pages in your addition book.  If you would like to complete an online activity, please try 'maths magician addition' - options for making the sums easier or more difficult.
https://coolsciencelab.com/math_magician_addition.html

Other
As it is superhero day, maybe you could choose one of these ideas:
> dress up as a superhero
> use the mashcam in purple mash to take a picture (instructions below)
> draw your own superhero and add captions showing their superpowers
> make some kitchen roll tube superhero cuffs (see picture)

> design a mask -template here if needed https://www.twinkl.com/resource/t-t-9305-design-a-superhero-mask

As always, I would love to see your creations.
Have fun, stay safe and smile.

Good morning everyone! I hope you had a very nice weekend and were able to get outside in the sunshine.
Mums and Dads - I have added some information about reading below this post which might be helpful for you.

I thought it would be nice to start by looking at some of the highlights from the week that we celebrated World Picnic day and Earth day.  I have loved looking at your photos and Purple Mash activities: great work, team!

"One day I woke up and realised I could fly! This is what I did that day..."

Literacy
Please focus on sound 'or'
Maybe you can show everyone at home Geraldine the Giraffe's phonics programme?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TKWxjU0UgQ

Information for parents : Reading

Picture
Over the last few weeks I have been looking at resources that could be used at home to continue with the excellent reading progress the pupils have been making in school.  I've been really impressed by the e-books available for free online from Oxford Owl - there are hundreds of levelled books available online, you just need to set up an account: the process is very straightforward.
https://home.oxfordowl.co.uk/books/free-ebooks/

On the website, look for free 'e-book library', then browse by Oxford level (see pictures below).

These levels relate closely to the Rigby reading books we have in school, though will have some different words and sounds so you may wish to start a level lower to build confidence and work up from there.

Clouds group: Yellow/Light blue level
Icicles group: Red/Yellow level
Rainbows group: Red Level
Snowflakes group: Pink/Red level
Sunshine/IEP group: Pink level

I noticed this helpful article on the website too: https://home.oxfordowl.co.uk/blog/learning-at-home-learning-to-read/

It might be helpful to mix things up on occasion: https://www.teachyourmonstertoread.com/is currently free to use and worth a look.

There is a lovely quote that says "children are made readers on the laps of their parents" and this is more true than ever just now: whether this is sharing a favourite story together at bedtime, tackling a new reading book with an older sibling or reading to younger sibling, it will all count.  Aim for ten minutes a day and as with everything else, please try not feel overwhelmed.

Friday  24th April 2020

 Good morning!

This is a special Friday: 24th April is National Skipping Day!
Today for your 'Get up and Go' you could show someone at home the skipping skills we have been learning in school.
We learned how to skip forwards, had a go at backwards skipping and even tried some 'French Skipping':
Here is a rhyme you can use. How many skips can you get?

Hippity Hop,
Hippity Hop,
How many skips
Before I stop?
1,2,3,4,5…

Here are my suggested activities today: as always, please just do what you can :)

Spellings/Sounds/Number Stories/Numbers
Have a go at this weeks spellings or sounds. Try your very best!

Literacy
I would love you to have a go at writing a 'Spring Senses Poem.'
First, think about the things you can see, hear, smell, touch and taste in Spring time.
Then see if you can write out your own 'Senses Poem' (see attached for an idea for layout).
You can have a go at sounding out the words, or an adult can write the ideas for you to neatly copy in your home writing book.
Numeracy
Friday is our practical/Topic Numeracy day.
In your new home pack you will find the 'Shape, Measure and Data Handling' booklet.
Between pages 17 and 20 there are 'Capacity' activities. Give them a go!
If you are not able to complete the practical activities, revisit your favourite online Numeracy games from this week.

Other:
World Around Us/Art/ICT

Friday is a great day for 'Finishing off':
-Complete hearing investigations in Senses booklet
-Finish off any 'Earth Art' (such a fantastic example below!)
- If you have not yet had a chance, check in with the 'Growing' Topic on Purple Mash. There will be a new topic next week.  Hmph and I have enjoyed seeing your saved pictures and drew this picture for you. We hope you like it.

Have a lovely weekend!

Good morning everyone!
April 23rd is National Picnic Day.
If the weather is nice, you could enjoy a breakfast or lunch picnic outdoors: bring a rug and your toys onto the step or the garden.  Hmph and I will be having coffee and biscuits in the sunshine this morning.

I've loved seeing snapshots of your work and checking out your ICT skills. A super animated drawing from Charlie (and a top class senses poster!), beautiful mask art from Jessica and Susannah, terrific robots from James M, an animal graph from Reuben and a very cool Purple Mash selfie from Jessica S!  You are all working very hard, and I am proud of you!

Welcome back everyone!
I hope you have had a wonderful Easter break. It's time for us to get back to learning!

Did you know that today is the start of National Stationery week? This week kids all over the UK will be picking up their favourite pens and pencils to do all sorts of writing and drawing. We will be working on writing and drawing skills too!

I would like to say a very Happy Birthday to Kurtis and James who had their birthdays at the weekend! I hope you had lots of cake and that six years old is even more fun than being five was!

Picture

Here are my recommendations for tasks to complete:

On Monday we take time to work on our writing skills by writing about the things we have been up to. Think about what you did over the Easter Break. What were your favourite memories? Could you write a sentence (or sentences) about them? Remember to sound out tricky words, use capital letters, finger spaces and full stops and to draw a ''wow' picture.  Read your writing to someone at home.

Literacy
Please focus on sound 'oo'
Maybe you can show everyone at home Geraldine the Giraffe's phonics programme?

Keep Calm and Craft on!

Hello Everyone! I hope the Easter break has been fun for everyone!
I know that we haven't been able to get out and about as usual, but I also know that you are all very creative and have great ideas so you'll have come up with lots of ways to spend the time.

This time of year always makes me feel creative: I'd like to share some ideas that you have a go at this weekend before we get back to work on Monday. Thank you Mums and Dads for continuing to send photographs: as I said on the phone, I miss all of the sunny smiles very much and it is lovely to see them!

Stay safe and keep smiling!
Picture
Idea 1:

When my sister and I were little, we loved to get chocolate eggs. Once we had eaten the eggs, the fun really began as we transformed the boxes into houses for our toys: I remember adding curtains and furniture. I think Hmph likes his new barn. Maybe you could make a new home for one of your toys?

Idea 2
At Easter people often paint and roll eggs- but what happens to the boxes left behind? Perhaps you could turn your egg box into a 'nature treasure box' and fill it with interesting things you find? How many colours from nature can you include?
Picture
Idea 3: Snail Craft

You will need:   White card or thick paper
Green card or paper (you can colour the white paper)
                        Felt tips or colouring pencils
                        Ruler
                        Scissors
                        Glue
                        Wiggly Eyes (Optional)

1. Line up your ruler with the long edge of the card/paper and draw a straight line
2. Draw a small rectangle at the top of the strip you have drawn. Make sure it touches the top of the page
3. Draw a smiley mouth and colour
4. Carefully cut out the strip of paper and the small rectangle at the top
5. Decorate the strip of paper - make it bright and colourful!
6. Roll up the paper to make a snail shape.  Draw or stick on some eyes. You can use a dab of glue to hold the snail together
7. Draw and cut out a leaf.  You can use green paper or colour your own design
8. Give your snail a name. Well done!

Picture
Idea 4: Nature Crown

You will need:   White card (or card from a cereal box!)
                        Felt tips or colouring pencils
                        Ruler
                        Scissors
                        Sellotape

                        Glue
Flowers, grass or other items from nature

1. Line up your ruler with the long edge of the cardboard and draw a straight line. Do this again so you  have two strips.
2. Carefully cut out the two strips of card.
3. Sellotape the strips together to make one long strip
4. Decorate the strip using your favourite colours
5. Now for the fun bit! Use sellotape or glue to add flowers, grass, buds or seeds to your crown.
6. Ask an adult to stick the two ends of the crown together so fits you nicely.
7. Smile and enjoy wearing your new crown! (Don't forget to take a picture if you try it!

Happy Easter everyone!
I hope you are having a very nice Easter weekend and a lovely break from working hard.
Maybe you got some Easter eggs today or had an Easter egg hunt at your house?
Here is a fun craft idea that you can use - you can put plastic or chocolate eggs in (until you eat them all up!)

You can be really creative and use any art or craft materials you like:
I used an egg box, flowers, 'grass' made from shredded green paper and some small Easter decorations from around my home. Enjoy!

Egg-cellent  Investigations!

Picture
I hope you are all having a lovely break! I had the most wonderful surprise today when some post arrived from school!
A handmade Easter card with a hedgehog sticker on.   I absolutely love it: Thank you Jessica!

Even though we are on holidays, I wanted to share some of my favourite Easter STEM activities. If you have time you could have a go at one (or more!) of them!

Easy Easter Egg Float and Sink Experiment

In this investigation you will see what will make the eggs float or sink
You will need:         Plastic eggs or small plastic capsules : (capsules from Kinder Eggs are great!)
A dish of water (see through works well)
Small items to put in the eggs
  1. Make sure that any holes in the eggs are sealed with sellotape.
  2. Make sure one plastic egg is empty: this is your ‘control'.
  3. Think carefully: If you put it in water, will it float or sink? Try it out.
  4. Next, think about different things you can put in the eggs: mini pom poms, pennies, marbles, Rice Krispies- be creative!
  5. Time for predictions: do you think the eggs will float or sink?
  6. Test your predictions!
  7. If you would like to investigate further, see if you can find ways to make the ‘floaters’ sink, and the ‘sinkers’ float. Could you add or take away some of the items inside?

Grow a Carrot Top!
In this investigation you will use the Easter Bunny’s favourite food to grow your own ‘Carrot Top’.
You will need:    The top of a carrot (2-3 cm from stem with some green on top)
                              A shallow dish
                              Cotton Wool
                              Water
                              A sunny windowsill
  1. Add a layer of cotton wool to your small dish
  2. Add a light dribble of water (not too much!)
  3. Press the carrot top into the wet cotton wool balls and place on a sunny windowsill
  4. Check the cotton balls each day: they need to stay wet (but not flooded)
With a little lucky, your carrot will start to grow some leaves and will ‘shoot up’ quickly!
If you enjoyed this, it can work with other vegetables too! https://wakeup-world.com/2012/10/15/16-foods-thatll-re-grow-from-kitchen-scraps/

Egg Race!

Do you remember the day we did our ‘People Who Help Us’ vehicles on a ramp investigation?
You can do a similar investigation with plastic, chocolate or hard boiled eggs!
You will need:                        Cardboard
Plastic, chocolate or hard boiled eggs
  1. Fold the edges of the card to make ‘bumpers’ to keep your eggs safe as they roll down the ramp
  2. Show a grown up how we set up our ramp for the investigation in school
  3. Set your egg at the top and roll it down
  4. You can investigate:        How to make the eggs roll faster, or slower                                                                                      What rolls faster: big or small eggs?
What rolls faster: light or heavy eggs?
If you put things inside the eggs, do they speed up or slow down
Racing and egg against a brother, sister or grown up!
Remember to predict and give your ideas first!

Have fun everyone!

Easter Doodles with Hmph!

We have been decorating our home for Easter and have been enjoying doing some art together - its very relaxing and a great way to spend time when we can't go to the park or the beach just at the moment.  I can see Ava, Susannah and James have been busy on Purple Mash and have saved lovely artwork to their trays. Well done!
We are having a break from our normal lessons at the moment but I am thinking about you and thought you might like to have a go at drawing your own Easter bunny and chick. Can you follow the instructions? When you are finished, you could cut them out and use them to make a card for your family, or stick them on a pencil with blu-tac to make Easter puppets.

Egg and Pebble Painting

Egg decorating is a tradition at Easter, and this year maybe you could have a zoom or WhatsApp egg decoration session with your friends or cousins?  Big brothers and sisters and adults can join in too! If you don't have or don't eat eggs, you can decorate white or light coloured pebbles. You can use Sharpies, paint, felt tips and you can even stick bits on. I love the ideas below!
I have Easter Science and a craft activity to share with you just in case you are feeling bored, but want to make sure you are having a break too, so will be back later in the week with those.
Keep smiling and stay safe!

As it is now the Easter holidays, we will be taking a break from our formal Literacy and Numeracy work and from our website updates.

I hope you have a very nice Easter with your family at home. Easter is a really special time - baby animals, chocolate eggs and time to be grateful for how lucky we really are (even when times are so very strange!)

I am missing you all very much, and was thinking about you over the weekend so put together a list of Easter activities for you: please see below!

I have also pinned some 'Easter' activities in Purple Mash/Mini Mash for you (you will see them when you log in, and can save them to your 'tray' -  picture instructions below)
As always, keep smiling and stay safe!

Instructions for Purple Mash Easter Activities

Friday 3rd  April 2020

April 3rd is International 'Spot a Rainbow day'. I loved spotting these amazing rainbows from two of our Year 2 artists (I spotted a beautiful pussycat in one of the photos too!)

Here are my suggestions for activities to complete today:
Literacy
Please complete a grammar/punctuation activity.
Spellings Group 1 and 2 - Please have a look at the grammar/punctuation activity in your textbook P24/25. It is about writing sentences.
You can complete the work in your Home Writing book. Remember neat writing, capital letters and full stops.
Sounds group/Lexia group- please log in and complete a Lexia session (Mrs Burns will be proud of the good work you are doing on this!)

Numeracy
Friday is our practical/Topic Numeracy day.
Please  complete 2/3 pages of Time or Money work in booklets, then either play a Numeracy board game (dominoes, snakes and ladders) or revisit your favourite online activity from this week - some great new games coming your way next week!)

I found this fun lesson and game about our senses. Listen carefully and use your ICT skills to answer the questions.
https://www.turtlediary.com/game/the-five-senses-kindergarten.html

Get up and Go!
To get moving today, you could have a go at this fantastic 'GoNoodle' Dance. Its a song from the 80's and made me think about all the fun we had together on our 80's day (you could wear your legwarmers! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJPvEs8qpQc

Keep smiling and stay safe. I miss you a lot and have really loved seeing your photos this week - thank you!

Thursday 2nd April 2020

Did you know that 2nd of April is International Children’s Book day? How exciting!

In school, we read and listen to lots of stories, so it is very strange that the only pupil I have to read to today is ever so small and spikey!  He doesn’t listen nearly as well as the Year Two Pupils do.

Picture
To celebrate International Children’s Book Day, please find time to read a favourite book together.
In my family we have been spending lots of time on Skype and Facetime: Nana and Papa could read you a story, or you could read to them?

Remember to use the daily checklist for activities to complete (Reading, Spellings and Number Facts, Literacy, Numeracy, Get up and Go!)
Here are my suggestions for activities to complete today:

Literacy
The book I would like to share with you today is called ‘Name That Place’.
You can read it online here:
http://www.nicurriculum.org.uk/curriculum_microsite/TSPC/doc/think_pack/storybooks/listen_and_think/year2/3_Name_That_Place.pdf
You can listen too (It’s a good one for the tablet!)
www.nicurriculum.org.uk/curriculum_microsite/TSPC/dep/media/listen_and_think/year2/3_Name_That_Place/index.html

Time to get creative – use the book or your own ideas to create a new place name. You can draw and write one or more sentences about the new place (remember we use neat writing, labelling and colours to show our skills!) and how it got its name.

There are lots of other brilliant ideas for discussion and activities in the back of the book if you wish! (p42/43)

Numeracy
Today I would like you to focus on Money work.
In school we would have a little grocery shop set up. Could you set up a shop in the kitchen at home and use 1p, 2p, 5p and 10p coins to buy some groceries?
Please complete 1 / 2 page in money booklet.
https://www.topmarks.co.uk/money/toy-shop-money - You can test your skills out here!

Other
Please have a look at your Sight Words today and continue to work through your booklet.

Art
In school we learned about rainbow colours and painted beautiful rainbows. I would love it if you could create some Rainbow art or craft. I know lots of kids have been putting rainbows in their windows at home!
https://www.thejoysharing.com/2020/02/rainbow-formation-paper-plate-craft.html
This is what I had planned for us to do together, but feel free to get creative.
Lots more ideas here too: maybe you could send a photo of what you have created to the school office?

Keep smiling and stay safe,
Miss Briggs

Wednesday  1st April 2020

Picture
Its 'April Fools' day today! Have fun... but not TOO many tricks on the busy Mums and Dads please!

Remember to use the daily checklist for basic activities to complete each day
(Reading, Spellings and Number Facts, Literacy, Numeracy, Get up and Go!)

Here are my suggestions for activities to complete today:

On a Wednesday we normally have assembly – one of the best bits is when we get together to sing. This week I have been singing along to one of my favourite songs. I thought you might like to try it too? Maybe you could sing it with your family or phone Nana and Papa and sing it to them!               (Three Little Birds Karaoke) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4sNi2PUiWM

PE
After assembly we love P.E. You could work out with Joe Wicks today! https://www.youtube.com/thebodycoachtv

Literacy
Comprehension group: Today I would like you to try the next comprehension, ‘King of the Forest’.
Read carefully and try the activities. Don’t forget, full sentences with capital letters and full stops: I know you can do it!
Spelling Group 2: Please choose a Literacy or phonics activity from your home pack.
Spelling Group 3: IEP/Lexia group: Please complete a Lexia session, revise using your flashcards and work on lower case letter formation.

Numeracy
Today I would like you to focus on subtraction.  Please complete one/two pages in your subtraction booklet.
You can try an online challenge to test your skills
https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/daily10
This game allows you to set the level (we’ll be revisiting this over the next few weeks as it’s a really versatile resource).

World Around Us
We are thinking about our Senses. You could look at this Powerpoint together –
https://www.twinkl.com/resource/t-tp-5240-eyfs-all-about-me-my-senses-powerpoint?sign_in=1
Can you name the five senses? Maybe you could make a picture or poster showing the five senses?
If an adult could email a picture of it to the school office I would love to see it!

Stay Safe and Smile!

Tuesday 31st March 2020

Picture
Happy Tuesday everyone!
Remember to use the daily checklist for basic activities to complete each day (Reading, Spellings/Number Facts/Literacy/Numeracy/Get up and Go!)

Here are my suggestions on what to complete today:

Literacy
Handwriting
In school, we have been working on upper case/capital letter formation.
Today, think about formation of letter K – here is a video to sing along with!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdI2ad0lNpA

Please revise capital and lower-case letters Aa- Jj, paying careful attention to formation, letter position, proportions (a lot of pupils find this tricky) then focus on letter Kk.

I took at picture of some letter patterns I have written. Maybe you could copy my letter patterns, or an adult could make a capital/lower case letter pattern for you to copy? It is fun to use felt tips, twistables and chalk to practice too!

Purple Mash Phonics
In Purple Mash, there are some excellent Phonics games which can help you to work on this week’s sounds.
Group 1 – Log in to Purple Mash. Click on the teacher’s easel ‘Reading and Writing’, Scroll to Phonics phase 3 Cloze, click ‘ai /ee’ activity.
Group 2 - Log in to Purple Mash. Click on the teacher’s easel ‘Reading and Writing’, Scroll to Phonics phase 2 Cloze, click ‘s a t p i n’ activity
Group 3/sounds - Log in to Purple Mash. Click on the teacher’s easel ‘Reading and Writing’, Scroll to ‘Alphabet pairs 8 cards’.

Numeracy
Addition
Today I would like you to focus on addition activities – please complete one or two pages in your addition book.  If you would like to complete an online activity, Funky Mummy is great fun! You can make it easier or trickier to suit your skills!    http://www.ictgames.com/funkyMummy/index.html

Science
Why not try a ‘Senses Scavenger Hunt’? Design your own as a family, or you can try this:
https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/au-t-3745-five-senses-scavenger-hunt-worksheet

Stay safe and smile!

Hello everyone! I hope you are well. It is sunny and breezy here in a very quiet Belfast.

Today, please try to find time to:
-Read for ten minutes
-Complete a Literacy activity from your home pack
-Complete a Numeracy activity from your home pack
-Get up and Go!

I was thinking about our normal Monday morning routine in school.
We always like to write about something fun that we did at the weekend and share it with our friends.
Maybe you have had a movie night with popcorn? Or maybe you were able to Skype with Nana and Papa?
Could you write a sentence about this and read it to someone at home? Maybe you could start a diary or scrapbook of some of your home adventures? I would love to read it when I see you again.

Literacy
This week we are thinking about phonics sound 'ai'. Did you know that sometimes 'ay' makes the same sound?
Maybe you can show everyone at home Geraldine the Giraffe's phonics programme?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LnXaN-CvR9s
htps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTCP8i4Nwgc

The Alphablocks did a brilliant job of explaining this too!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROKNNvuGpEo

  • Could you have an 'ay' / 'ai' hunt like Geraldine? Look around the house or in your own books and see if you can find it?
  • Build words in lots of fun ways - magnetic letters, flash cards, chalk, paint.. be creative!
  • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5rSw9mATGo This song is lots of fun!

Numeracy
Please complete some number work today - one to two pages in your home pack.
Count forwards, count backwards, count in ones, twos and fives...even tens!

WAU
Our new topic is 'Senses'
Here is a fun video to introduce the topic!

Sunday 29th  March 2020

Normally at this time on a Sunday I would be ensuring everything is ready for a busy week of work and play in school with the Year Two pupils, but with everyone's health and safety the main consideration at the moment things have been rather different for us all.

I hope that you are finding lots of activities to keep you busy and learning in your home packs.
I am going to endeavour to update our webpage regularly with ideas to keep you learning so that when we all meet again you will be even more clever and talented than before: please keep an eye out! :)

I am thinking about all of the Year Twos and missing them very much, we always have so much fun in school together! I was looking at some photos that were taken in the last few weeks and would like to share them with you: they made me smile today and I hope they make you smile too!

Our Book day buddies!

Thank you so much to the Year Six Pupils for visiting us and to Mrs Price for organising!

Pancake Day

In Year Two we are always on the lookout for reasons to celebrate, and Pancake Day was no exception to this!
We celebrated in style by listening to a range of traditional and international stories about pancakes and finding out information about why people make pancakes on this particular day. Then we had our own pancakes, with the challenge of cutting a special shape - heart, flower, star, or dinosaur and adding the spread ourselves! Great job, everyone!

Post Office Trip

In Literacy we have been learning about different genres of writing, and have been learning about the different features of a letter.  What better way to make this 'real' than writing letters to our families and posting the in the village post office! Everyone worked very hard to write their letters, which were full of great ideas and very neat writing! The pupils were very well mannered and showed excellent road safety knowledge as they walked through the village. All pupils were able to ask and pay for their own stamp and posted their own letter - even though it was a stretch to reach the letter box for some! With all of our 70p stamp money spent, there was £1 left - just enough for a big bag of sweets as a treat to round off the trip. Well done everyone, I felt very proud of you!
Picture

Number Day!

One of our favourite days of the year, 'Number Day' was held on the 14th of February. On this day, the pupils are able to come to school in 'onesies' or clothing with numbers on and take part of a range of fun activities relating to number. We really enjoyed teaming up with our friends in Year Three to complete all sorts of challenges!

Counting Cars

We've been working hard on our Data Handling skills, using tally marks, block graphs, Venn and Carroll diagrams and sorting. To give our learning real life context, we took advantage of a sunny Friday to carry out a 'traffic survey'.  We had to use quick thinking and observation in addition to our data handling skills to record the traffic as it passed by our school. Everyone did a great job!
Picture

A very happy  snow day!

With an unusually mild and wet winter nearly behind us, we were all surprised to wake up to a covering of snow one morning!  The roads proved treacherous for many, but a few brave souls were able to make it into school!
The weather outside was definitely frightful, but the fun inside was quite delightful as we played with the disco dough to make our own snowmen!  We used magic science powder mixed with real snow from outside to make our own snow to play with...and with careful supervision were able to spend a little time outside making our own mini snowmen decorated with buttons and sequins!  The row of thawing coats and gloves on the radiators were a sign of a really different day well spent together.

Happy Birthday, Dromara Primary School - 80 years  young!

This year marks Dromara Primary School's 80th anniversary, and we celebrated in style as the term drew to a close!
Thank you  to all the Mums and Dads for entering into the spirit of our 80s day and providing such colourful costumes!
The pupils marked this important event with an 80s disco, lots of cake and reflection on how the school has grown within the community over the past 80s years! a very fun day for all involved!

Lights, Camera, ACTION!

After weeks of rehearsals we were finally ready to present our Christmas Musical 'Countdown to Christmas' on the 10th and 11th of December.
While parents, family and friends took their seats there was a flurry of activity, face painting and glitter 'backstage' as the pupils eagerly waited to take to the stage.  What a show they put on!
Top-class acting, enthusiastic singing, dance moves worthy of 'strictly' were all on display - the pupils did a brilliant job of showcasing their talent and hard work. Well done everyone!

Its beginning to look at lot like Christmas!

The Year Two elves have been very hard at work preparing our Christmas Musical 'Countdown to Christmas'!
We are looking forward to welcoming everyone to our shows on Tuesday 10th and Wednesday 11th December.

"If you truly understand it, you can teach it"

As part of our 'Light and Dark' topic, the Year Two pupils have been finding out about Nocturnal animals.
The pupils were able to choose the animal that interested them most, and then were encouraged to ask questions and to use the internet and books to find out lots of factual information.
Each pupil was then able to become the 'teacher' to tell their peers about their chosen animal. Even the grown ups in the class learned some new facts! Well done, everyone!

Halloween Hamper Winners!

Congratulations to our Year Two Hallowe'en Hamper winners!
The pupils were delighted to receive their treats - thank you to everyone who contributed!
Picture

Book Day Book Buddies!

Our older pupils proved to be fantastic role models to the Year Twos as they visited to model reading as reading buddies during book week. Reading some of our favourites and some new titles, we had a wonderful afternoon together.
Thank you to Mrs Price for organising a fun event! Keep reading, everyone!

The Sponsored Walk!

One of our favourite events of the year!
Thank you to everyone who was able to come along to join us on our annual sponsored walk! We had a terrific afternoon with lots of great chat along the way!
Picture

The BIG   alphabet challenge!

Mums and Dads may have heard the Year Two pupils talking about 'The BIG alphabet challenge'.
This challenge builds on the fantastic progress the pupils made in Year One, when they learned their initial phonics sounds.
It is important that the pupils understand that each sound has an alphabet letter name; over the next few weeks they will be completing a series of activities which will build alphabet letter name and order knowledge and corresponding lower and upper case letters.
We were very excited when Mrs Price came to visit the first pupils to complete the challenges: hopefully she will return soon to congratulate the next group!
Picture

There's  a rumble in the Jungle!

Our first class Topic is 'Wild About Animals'.  We have been learning all about Wild Animals, Farm Animals and Pets. The pupils have had lots of fun playing in our class 'Vets' Role Play.
During writing activities, we have been researching and writing Animal Reports.  The Year Two pupils really enjoyed dressing up as animals and logging on to the computers to type their own stories. Lots of great ICT skills on display!

Little people, BIG ideas!

We have been working hard to build our creative and imaginative skills in the first few weeks of Year Two. The pupils have been able to plan what they are going to make, select the materials they needed and talk about their creations. Great imagination on show in these artistic activities!

The Daily Mile!

September has been very kind to us so far, which means we have had lots of opportunities to get out for 'The Daily Mile'. This is always a happy time for both pupils and staff as we walk, chat, and soak up some lovely fresh air together!
Picture

Back to School!

Welcome back everyone!
We have been back to school for a week already: time flies!
It was a real pleasure to see the Year Two pupils come to school with enthusiasm and independence - what a difference a year makes!
Everyone has settled in very well already.  We have been learning the rules and routines which are important to making each day in school a success, have started reading, and have already completed lots of literacy, numeracy and enjoying play activities! Great work everyone.
We are looking forward to a great year of work and play: stay tuned for updates!

Getting to know you!

Our first challenge this year was to gather some 'treasure' to bring to school to show the class!
The Year Two pupils really embraced this challenge and we saw all sorts of objects - photographs, toys, vegetables, accessories - and even a Lego driving license. Thank you to all the Mums and Dads for their help with this and WELL DONE to the Year Two pupils for being brave enough to speak in front of the whole class!
