SUMMER 2021
Thank You
Hi Y7 I hope some of you may check the site over the summer and pass this on. A very big thank you to you and your parents for the very kind and generous gifts they are all lovely. Thank you again for the amazing memories book you made for me I have enjoyed reading it already and will do many times in the future.
I will be thinking about you when you start your new schools in August and September.
Hope to see you sometime out and about.

Basketball and BBQ Friday
Friday was amazing. Mrs Collins organised a basketball tournament where we had to just a colour theme for our team and talk tactics. We had an exhausting and competitive morning and with very close matches right up to the final which went to extra time the winners were the blue team, red in second place and green in third.
This was followed by a delicious barbecue cooked by Mrs Burns; really tasty. Then lollies to follow.

Community Tribal Drummers
Mrs Reain kindly organized an in school activity where we learn about tribal drumming, did some plate spinning, decorated pebbles and plaited. We had great fun making plenty of noise.
Summer Cycling
Cycling proficiency is going well and only one major downpour so far; we are all doing well.
LCCC Tree Planting
LCCC bio diversity team Tracy and Steven arrived today with all the tools needed to plant about 60 trees in the Lagan Park area. Y7 were invited to plant at least 1 tree each and to put a personal label on it so in years to come they can see their tree grow into a beautiful woodland. We had the most amazing morning learning how to plant the saplings to ensure maximum growth. As a reward our tea break was some welcome ice lollies. We had a brilliant time; thank you to Mrs Burns for organising the whole activity. Here are the photos, blue sky, blue hoodies, greenery and yellow buttercups.
It's always good to learn some life skills and none better than some cookery. So we made delicious pizzas from scratch, no need for bought ones anymore or take aways. We learnt how to make the dough, knead it and leave it to prove to let the yeast and gluten get to work. A quick blast in the oven and they were the best we have tasted.. Look at the faces!!!!
10 Minute Talks
Summer term in Y7 means many things but top of the list is our 10 minute talks. No matter how chatty a person you are with your friends it's a whole different ball game when you have to stand in front of the class and speak for at least 10 minutes on a favourite subject. BUT... they have started and some excellent talks already. From boxing to bowls; from Portugal to Blackpool to the Philippines we have been truly entertained and educated. Our latest set of talks included making metal people from car parts, Holiday in Lanzarote and the world famous group BTS. Here are the relieved faces of those who can now sit back and enjoy the rest. Scroll on down to see the latest.
This week's talks have included a collie dog named Rex, farm machinery; tree cutting and replanting activities Dromara style; football teams such as : Manchester United, Liverpool and the famous footballer Ronaldo; Anime which is a Japanese cartoon; and Finn the labradoodle. All really enjoyable.
The latest round of 10 minute talks took us from sheep farming to Chelsea FC; from amazing art to Manchester City FC; from Disneyland, Paris to fantastic holidays in Europe. We are looking forward to the final 5 this week. Everyone has done really well, a lot of hard work and a few nerves conquered. So to our final round of talks and what a variety we had today; from caravan holidays to West Bromwich Albion; from cookery and Devon the dog to The Brexit Protocol, no that was a wind up it really was Oreo the dog.
Finally it was NSPCC number day and we had brilliant fun out on the MUGA doing all kinds of team games to score team points, followed by Who Wants to be a Mathionaire and here is the winning team so far between team games and mind games.

Titanic technology
As part of out studies about the Titanic we have been learning about Morse code. We were able to build circuits with our Hot Wire electronic kits to make a sender. We were able to send and receive and decode each other's messages. A lot of beeping going on.
The sun is shining and there is still frost in the mornings but we are all sunshine smiles because the hoodies have arrived!!!!!!!
Here we are modelling them and having fun in the sun. If it's anything like previous years the weather will now be roasting and we will wear our hoodies no matter how warm we get because .........

This will be my favourite part of the class page, I hope you enjoy seeing all your pictures here, keep them coming. This will stay at the top of the page from now on with daily updates underneath. Some more amazing videos have arrived and I am stunned at how well you have completed this challenge, unfortunately we cannot upload these to webpage but I will keep them for us all to enjoy when we return to school.
Take a look at the updated gallery which shows all the art work you sent in, I'm hoping for plenty more with the next returned pack. Taylor and Adam were really creative with the clay egg decorations, if anyone else has pictures please send them in, either of creations or of you or both.
ALL THE LATEST EASTER ART, HOPE THERE IS MORE TO COME FOR THE COMPETITION!
Work for Friday 19th March
Friday yipeeeeeeee, last remote learning day; all looking forward to being back together and making some good y7 memories over the next few months.
So today's timetable (apologies for the confusion on Thursday about Titanic advert, I had looked at my printed timetable forgetting I had set different work on Wednesday)

Spellings
It would be great if someone could ask you 12 of these.
Numeracy
Please finish off any numeracy that hasn't been completed. Then you have a sheet labelled curves of pursuit. This would be easiest to do on squared paper to get a perfect square. Then follow the instructions and use a good sharp pencil and obviously a ruler for best effect.
Technology
This week I am challenging you to make a bird feeder, the most effective of which we will fill with seeds and hang up on the trees where we line up in school.
Design requirements:
A suitable shape to hold seeds
An opening for filling that can be closed over
At least 2 holes for feeding birds but that seed will not fall out of (so think a little ledge on edge of hole)
A perch bar
A means of hanging it from a branch
Will it be waterproof?
You can Google bird feeders to see what bought ones are like or just design your own much better one.
Suggested materials
Empty milk cartons (cleaned out)
empty juice cartons(cleaned out)
Kitchen roll tubes
plastic straws
lollipop sticks( a good excuse to eat one first)
wire coat hanger
I'm sure there could be more materials to use, this is just an idea of a few things.
Golden time, get yourselves outside if it's dry.
ICT
Free choice.
RETURNING TO SCHOOL. PLEASE BRING ALL WORK AND FOLDERS THAT HAVE BEEN SENT HOME ALONG WITH READING BOOKS, CLAY TOOLS, MASKING TAPE, UNUSED CLAY.
LOOKING FORWARD TO A GREAT WEEK NEXT WEEK WITH LOTS OF CHAT, ACTIVITY AND FRESH AIR. PLEASE BRING TRAINERS AS PE MAY BE HAPPENING MORE FREQUENTLY AND A COAT IN CASE IT IS COLD OR SHOWERY, WE WILL BE OUT.

Some things to look out for when working out on a calculator.
1. A calculator doesn't show money to 2 decimal places for example £16 divided by 5 = 3.2 on a calculator but a real money answer would read £3.20
2. You need to put = at the end of a calculation or it will continue to the next sum you do.
3. To make sure the sum is complete clear the read out screen.

Please colour building according to their use eg homes - school - church; river and draw a key on the page. If you have time and you would like a challenge please do the extension activity perhaps writing 5 more clues for your features.

Work for Monday 8th March
Good morning Y7 I hope you had a good weekend and are ready for the next pack of work. It can be picked up from the hall this morning; I have sent you a wee treat to boost sugar levels and to say thank you for all the work you have completed already.

Numeracy
We are going to do some preparation work for high school that I hope you will enjoy, it's algebra so in many examples it's letters not numbers.
You have a sheet called simplify 1 where you are going to learn how to simplify or shorten an equation.
An equation is just a number sentence.
Here is a video to explain how to simplify
You should also read the examples at the top of sheet 1
Please copy out the questions and give the simplified answer beside it.
To do an algebra x you simply draw a c back to back with another c, so it looks like a curly x
Silent reading
You have 1 book in this pack as some are quite long.

Literacy
You have a set of sheets called I See Things from a Different Angle.
You may remember we did activity with Newbridge School about pathetic fallacy which really means putting feelings into an object or animal.
So read my idea about a tv remote then choose something in the house or you pet and write about your day with your human family.
It doesn't need to be as long as mine but split it into morning, afternoon and evening with about half a page on each part.

Thinking Skills
If you have time and energy left after admin here is what I think could be an interesting activity:-
Redesign your house.
We have all spent so long in our houses that we really know them so here is the plan:-
Step 1
Draw a large plan of the ground floor of the house, only walls, door openings and a word where the windows are.
Step 2
Draw or label each room with what would be your dream home - maybe a mini football pitch, a games room, a gym a movie room, a music room, a make up bar, who knows. There is no limit to the spending.
Golden time outside I hope.
ICT
Your choice.
Thank you for another week of hard work. I hope to catch up on the phone with you all over the next 2 weeks.

As it is World Book Day there are some online activities that you may like to take part in instead of the regular timetable or maybe as well as!! follow world book day

Black and red groups - distance chart reading and questions. Here is a wee video to explain a little about how to read these charts
Questions 1 and 2 are quite straightforward but question 3 needs to be done in 2 steps that are then added together.
For example if I travel from Exeter to London and then on to Aberdeen.
First Exeter to London is 277 km then London to Aberdeen is 861 km so altogether it is 277 + 861 = 1138 km
Return journey- if I travel from Cardiff to Brighton then on to London that means I go there and back.
So Cardiff to Brighton is 296 and Brighton to London is 85 so 296 + 85 = 381 and because it is a return journey you double it, 381 x 2 = 762 km
Question 6 finding an average speed
For example It took 10 hours from Newcastle to Brighton which is 550 km so 550km divided by 10 is 55 km per hour
Red group try as far as this and black group see how many of the next questions up to 9 you can do, a bit of a challenge.

Work for Friday 26th February
Friday again and the end of February.
First of all a message for your parents.
I know I normally talk to Y7 directly on the page but I would just like to say a huge thank you to yourselves for all the support you are giving your children both in every day learning and for getting together all the work returned for assessment. I really appreciate all that you and your children are doing.
Now back to you Y7, thank you for all the amazing work you have completed over the last two weeks, well maybe numeracy can't be described as amazing but the amount you have done certainly is.
However the poems, the castles, the views from your window and your art work is really fantastic. I have put any returned work up on display and will take my camera in tomorrow so I can post images on the gallery, superb work that really inspired me.
CALCULATOR ALERT, THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HAS REPLIED ON PM ABOUT HAVING A CALCULATOR. WE WILL NEED THESE FOR THE NEXT PACK SO LET ME KNOW BY NEXT THURSDAY PLEASE.

If it is as nice as Thursday I suggest you get some fresh air and time away from worksheets or computers. My golden time may be grass cutting.

I have set a number of Purple Mash activities for you to choose from, please do whichever ones appeal to you and don't stress if you don't get them all done, I know some of you share i pads or computers.

ART
Clay at last !!! You are going to make Easter tree decorations which when they are fired and painted you can hang on a branch or twig, inside the house or outside or from a window handle.
You need:
The clay
The clay tool
A paper towel or piece of paper to roll on
A rolling pin or substitute - I though a tin of beans , someone suggested wrapping a rolling pin in cling film and another the inside of a pinata bat!!!
The Mini Egg template sheet.
When you have collected all your materials and equipment here are the steps:
Step 1 Mark with a pen or pencil as in the photo where the threading hole will be.
Step 2 Cut out the templates neatly.
Step 3 Take your clay and using the heel of your hand knock back the clay to get rid of any air, like we did in class.
Step 4 Place it on kitchen roll or paper, stand up and using you rolling tool roll evenly to an even thickness of half a cm deep.
Step 5 Using your template wisely see how many you can draw round then cut out, use a pencil point to make the hole for hanging the decoration.
Step 5 Put your initials on one side
Step 6 Use the clay tool or perhaps something you have at home to make imprints on the other side, maybe stripes or zigzags or chequer board, whatever you like.
Step 7 Place these on a flat surface carefully to allow to dry. They will be fragile until fired in school so take care of them.
I look forward to seeing the finished eggs and even a picture of you at work would be good for the gallery.

Mental Maths
You have a stapled set of worksheets for mental maths, the top one should say Homework sheet 22 Mental arithmetic 2.
Please complete test 1 today on the sheet.
Numeracy
Roman Numerals. This is a topic in maths that most people love. Our number system is called the Arabic system where we use numbers but the Roman system uses letters. I have put together a set of sheets, the first of which gives you the rules but if you find it easier to listen to an example here is a video link
Once you have either watched the link or read the instruction sheet or both please complete the first 2 sheets in the pack on the worksheet.
Literacy
In the literacy bundle you used yesterday the next sheets are proof reading sheets, either Our Excursion black group or Sports Day red group.
Our Excursion: follow instructions as to what is needed to correct the passage then list the words that have been used incorrectly in 2, finally spot and record the nouns and verbs.
Sports Day: follow the instructions about correcting punctuation then find and record incorrectly used words and finally find the compound verbs following the examples.
Silent Reading
Find a quiet corner and spend 20 minutes reading.

Map Mayhem
This sheet is with art and technology sheets, I'm sorry if the first letter of each line has been cut off like my copy, but we'll cope.
In case the left side of the map locations are missing on yours too here is what I reckon they are:-
Brown Boulder
Juile Quicksand
Flapping flag
Phil's lighthouse
Dusty Dunes
Someone's cave
I see the last bit of the story is also missing so be inventive and make it up putting in the remaining places that are missing, writingthe final bits of the story on the sheet. We will call it using your initiative!!
Please use colour to make you map and key more interesting.
DON'T FORGET TO SEND ME A MESSAGE ON PM SHARED BLOG WITH YOU IDEAS FOR REPLACEMEMT ROLLING PINS.
Work for Monday 22nd February
Hi Y7 and welcome back to online school!! I hope you had a good half term in spite of the weather some days.
The packs are ready to be picked up this morning and because you won't be ready to work until half way through the day the timetable is shorter.
Your pack has a timetable for the next 2 weeks; a set of numeracy pages, literacy pages and then a variety of pages for thinking skills and art. You will be glad to see some clay; put it away somewhere cool until Wednesday when we will be using it.
This week's timetable is the side with 'er' spellings.

Please read the whole sheet before you start to plan, I have looked at the scale and it seems wrong as a 1m bench would be hard to draw so I am going to say the arrowed line would represent 3 metres so 1cm equals 1 m.
Pay attention to the direction of North as this will give you a hint as to where the sun will be shining from.
Please rule neatly in pencil and for a better finish add some colour and a key to these colours.

Paper and straw rockets
You should have the following in your T and A folder;

thin art straws
thick art straws ( keep 2 of these for next week)

You need to cut and colour the rocket templates and then work out how you can attach the straws so that you can blow through a straw but the air will get trapped to make the rocket launch. I have included a picture of finished rockets but not how you attach the straw. A Little hint would be one straw is hidden inside the other, also each rocket has 2 outer sides so the straws are sandwiched between the templates!! GOOD LUCK Pictures would be great of you and the completed challenge.
Golden Time - your choice, my choice would be something outside away from a screen.

Volcano Poem
WILF
A 4 verse poem with 4 lines in each verse.
It doesn't need to rhyme.
I suggest you have a theme for each verse perhaps colours, noises, actions, comparing to creature or mythical human.
For the colours and actions look at the clips I have included below.
For the comparing to creatures think about maybe:-
An angry dragon beneath the earth breathing fire and smoke etc
A blacksmith of the underworld hammering at his anvil over a fire.
A sleeping giant who comes to life and is angry with the people above,
Vulcan who was the god of fire throwing lava bombs and flames.
A giant snake like a river flowing down the mountain.
I'm sure you will be very creative, you always are.
Watch this video clip of an eruption and this one clip two
Make sure the poem has a comma at the end of each line and at the end of the verse a new line before the next verse. You will be word processing this tomorrow.

As you are looking at volcanoes in WAU I thought we could do a bit of art work using either felt tips, crayons, pencils or even coloured paper to make some images of our own which can be sent in to school to make a display.
I really like the last one where you can use lots of volcano related words for the cone.

Literacy
Spend 1 hour on literacy.
Please complete the Richter Scale illustration, sorry for any confusion with the weekly timetable where I had said Mercali scale, if you did this instead of Richter it's fine, either will do. It should have 2 pages divided in to 6 squares each with 2 introductory squares then 9 squares giving magnitude, an illustration of what you would see and a sentence to explain. Please put this in poly pocket or cardboard folder to return for marking.
If you finish that please use the internet to research news reports about earthquakes as you are going to be a reporter from the scene for this activity that will be completed over 3 lessons.
Stage 1 research
Stage 2 Write a news report, do a rough draft today for typing or rewriting in ICT on Friday. ( I have put a 2do link on Purple Mash which even though it is like a newspaper report will give you some ideas of what to include in your news report. The news report can be word processed or hand written)
Stage 3 Powerpoint for a backdrop of your report(next week)
Look at the pictures below then use you reporter skills to compile a new report like this:
* Introduce yourself and the Tv station you report for.
*Say where you are ( check which countries would have had a lot of quakes)
*Say when the quake happened.
* Say what magnitude it was on the Richter scale.
*Describe what you can see around you, people, buildings, cars, sounds, maybe after shocks.
This should be at least 10 sentences.
*Interview an eye witness or rescue worker ( at least 3 sentences)
* Recap what happened and hand back to the studio, maybe mention when your next report will be.

Good morning Year 7. I trust you all have your new home packs.
A couple of you didn't have your mental maths booklets in your folders under your desk . I am assuming you have these at home. If this is not the case, please email me and I'll organise another copy for you asap.
Before Christmas I sent home both numeracy and literacy homework books ( 2 of each). Use one of each to record your work for the next two weeks.Put the date and a title at the top of each piece of written work. These can be returned to school for marking when you collect the second pack on Friday 29th January.
I have posted links to the New Wave answer books to mark as you go along otherwise we will go through them when we return to school.

Then workbook P102 Bar charts
As these are a little more difficult I suggest you get a parent to help you fill in the missing numbers in the spaces at the side. Again do this in Challenge 2, work out what each square is worth.
Technology
Today's challenge is to build a bridge to span a 30 cm gap
Suggested materials
cereal box strips
rolled and taped scrap paper or newspaper
straws
tape
string or wool
kitchen roll tubes
The challenge is to see what weight your bridge can hold, I would test the bridge with a toy car first to make sure it will hold that.
Record your results in a table giving name of object and weight. Try at least 5. Under your table of results write a brief evaluation like you did last week for me to grade.
Here are some images of what abridge might look like but yours may be different.

Obviously you don't have a rope to climb or maybe no skipping rope, but for step ups use the bottom step of your stairs and replace those you can't do with extra ones of the other reps. Make a hoop shape from a jumper.

Reading - Please return your current reading book to school when collecting your home learning pack on Friday. Attach a note/piece of paper with your name on it, so we can tick you off our list. Unfortunately lots of textbooks were not returned at the end of lockdown last year and we simply cannot afford to replace reading books as well. You will find one non-fiction and one fiction reading book in your new pack. These have been noted and will need to be returned before new books can be given out in the second pack.
In the meantime I hope you are all enjoying reading some books of your own choosing. Don't forget about downloading ebooks from the library online.

A tip for challenge 2 is find the difference between the numbers in the sequence to work out the rule, for example 16,20,24 _ _ the difference is 4 each time so add 4 is the rule.
In Qu3 in challenge 2 is to draw the grid out and complete all the missing numbers.
In Challenge 3 leave out Qu 2

.
As you can see they are 3 very different designs, picture 1 is on a flat piece of card propped up where the other 2 are more 3D in design.
Materials you could use:-
Empty cereal box
Lid of a shoebox or shoe box
Toilet or kitchen roll tubes
Extra strips of card or paper
Selotape or masking tape
Drinking straws
Paper or plastic cup
A marble, small ball or spherical sweet.
The run should have lots of chutes, (open slides) a covered tunnel, a start flag (like Formula 1 races) and a finishing banner.
You have an hour and a half to collect your materials, make the run and be ready to test. You may try the run out along the way and maybe add speeds ramps to slow the marble down or more corners to make a bigger zigzag.
When you are ready to test get a stop watch and piece of paper to record your times. Allow yourself 5 goes to find a technique to help it slow down.
Evaluation
When you have finished I need you to write a short evaluation which you can either email to school or put in a safe place to return next Friday for me to mark and grade. This can be hand written or word processed, remember name and date please.
The evaluation needs:-
A title
2 sentences about what the challenge was.
A short paragraph(2-3 sentences) about the difficulties in making.
2 sentences about how well it worked, or didn't.
Conclusion and results, about success or not and a table of results.
Please take a photo if you can and send it in.
ALTERNATIVE ACTIVITY
If you do not have the materials please don't worry you could do me a very detailed plan with lots of notes around it explaining how you would make it, add plenty of colour and illustrations.
ICT
Today you are continuing the 2dos from Purple Mash, please make sure you save your work and if possible put a comment so I can see how you liked the activity. I will be recording all the results of your activities and will share them with you when we are back at school. I am so glad to see how busy some of you have been on Purple Mash so in case you have run out of activities I have added a few more; these include serial mash where those of you who love books can get a sample of a chapter, design a vehicle and a different maths game.
I hope you get some time for Golden time or as it will probably be called 'fresh air' or of course a bit of silent reading from whatever book you like for 20 minutes.

Our festive Friday

Our photographer was too busy with duck supervision to take more photos!
As well as all the basics we are enjoying plenty of other activities one of which is virtual lessons from Newbridge Integrated College in Banbridge.
This week it was science and we learnt about cells, their make up and the names for each part. After a bit of written work we got to create our own cells using either lego or k'nex and here are the colourful results. Ask your child to show you the cell membrane, cytoplasm, mitochondria and nucleus. Our last photo shows someone getting creative with their break!!!

Virtual high school lessons.
Newbridge Integrated College in Loughbrickland have made a series of lessons to replace their open days this year and over the next 3 months we will get to meet some high school teachers and be in their virtual classroom.
Our first lesson was technology where we learnt about plastics both thermo and thermo setting. Then we got to use wet and dry paper to smooth our plastic photo frames which we can bring home. Here we are at the smoothing and then the finishing stage.

New month, new activities.
We have all settled back into the routine of work after Hallowe'en with plenty of numeracy and literacy.
To add to out thinking and processing skills we have started technology on a Friday, which is a good replacement for swimming at the moment.
Today's challenge was to make a cardboard hovercraft. Here we are making them. We then used a hairdryer to recreate the effect of air being forced down to make the craft hover above the ground. All worked well.

October 2020
Hallowe'en
Continuing the Hallowe'en theme we celebrated an early finish for half term with our hamper draw to raise money for school funds and we had 5 lucky winners. One won twice but shared her second bag with the rest of the class, how kind to share the sugar rush. We then had our usual golden time out in the sunshine followed by a mega sugar eating marathon, sorry parents if we return home a little bit hyper.
With only 2 weeks to go before Hallowe'en we have created some fantastic clay pumpkins all ready to be fired, be afraid, very afraid, look at those faces.

We have now completed our Picasso faces in clay, they have been created, fired and painted and we are now ready to show them off. Here are the results so far (more to come).

Welcome to all the pupils and parents of year 7. We are now nearly 2 weeks in to the autumn term and learning new ways of doing things both with work and routines in school. We have been working mainly on literacy and numeracy but everyone needs a break from that at least once a week; so here are some photos of us making a start on Andy Warhol type cartoon repeats. The finished masterpieces will be photographed and posted soon.
Picasso in pastel
We have been recreating faces in the style of Picasso a famous Spanish artist and here are the results.
Andy Warhol inspired cartoon images
A couple of weeks ago we posted photos of ourselves at the first stages of our Andy Warhol repeat cartoons. We learnt how to draw the cartoon accurately then trace it, found out how to transfer the traced image to paper and finally use a rotation of 5 colours to imitate the process Andy Warhol used. Here are the brilliant results. Why not look up the real images on the internet and see if ours as as good as his.
Sponsored walk October 2020
On a beautiful sunny afternoon we did our annual sponsored walk round the loop. We set ourselves the target of 280 laps between 27 of us plus Mrs Collins. Well we not only did it we surpassed it. We managed 343 laps at 400m a lap sooooooooo, we reckon that would be 114 km. Here is the evidence in photos.
