Work for Friday 26th June
Can you believe it's finally here the last Friday of your primary school career. One benefit of remote learning is today is officially the last day of work even though term doesn't finish until next Tuesday.
It was lovely to catch up with some of you today, and if we didn't get you we have left a message, I'm sure you were out enjoying the sun. Maybe doing the Outdoor Scavenger Hunt sheet.
I have three activities for you, none of them too difficult, just a bit of fun for the last day of work.
All are thinking skill type sheets; you have PENCIL OLYMPICS, WHAT'S THE QUESTION AND THINKING ABOUT TODAY.
The first two are fairly straightforward and of course can be done on the sheet. The last one I would change the TODAY to REMOTE LEARNING, it might be worthwhile filling in to have as a memento of this strange end to your primary years; strange but good I hope.
This will be the last piece of work posted on the class page but please keep an eye on it in case there are further updates.
We are really looking forward to seeing you when you collect your reports on Tuesday and looking forward even more to a time in the future when we can all celebrate you leaving properly.
We have enjoyed your company so much this year and you have shown that you are ready to move on to high school with all those independent skills. Two photos to finish; your Y1 picture and one of the many to celebrate being class of the week( we reckon Class of the Year).

NEVER MIND VOLCANO LEGENDS, WE THINK Y7 LEGENDS

TECHNOLOGY
As promised we have more than one challenge this week. In your pack you have a few sheets about bridge building. You may see what resources you have about the house and be creative. Try it out over a short span and experiment with different weights bearing in mind you don't want it to break on the first attempt with too heavy a weight.
THINKING SKILLS
Something for outside if the weather is as nice as they predict. You have a sheet called OUTDOOR SCAVENGER. See how creative you can be about the garden finding something to match each statement, maybe you could challenge a brother or sister to have a go too.
That's all for today, enjoy the sunshine and look forward to Friday, the last day of work even if not the last day of school; and have some ideas ready when we give you a ring.

Work for Wednesday 24th June
Hello Y7, unbelievable but we can now say this is the last Wednesday of Y7, better make it a good one.
Here are the answers for the last pages of the capacity booklet you completed last week.
Here are the answers for the last pages of the capacity booklet you completed last week.
We will be ringing you before the end of term for another catch up, this time both of us would like to get to speak to you all. Can you have a think about what you would like to do as a class whenever we are all allowed to get back together in the future, we would appreciate your ideas and not just what we think you would like.
Right on to less exciting things, today's work!!
NUMERACY You have a sheet in your pack titled GARDEN FOR A FUSSPOT
STEP 1 Read the whole page
STEP 2 Using the scale on the page label each side of the plan.
STEP 3 Read all the instructions again
STEP 4 Design the symbols you will need
STEP 5 Complete the plan neatly and add colour if you wish
TECHNOLOGY I know this is a sort of repeat of one we did together in class but now you're on your own and it may be even better.
You have a challenge called MARBLE RUN, so get together any materials and of course find a small ball or marble or a malteser if necessary. Follow the instructions on the sheets and as it says make any modifications you need to to either make it work or even better if it works well, make it longer. Maybe you could challenge someone else in your house to make one too then you can have timed races.
ART/TECHNOLOGY
You have another Sentinus sheet titled CREATE A PICTURE PUZZLE. You will need some cardboard and paper and of course pens to design. An old shoe box style of cardboard would be best or any amazon box, I'm sure someone in your house may have ordered stuff!!!! Keep the design simple, maybe imagine it is for a younger child. If you succeed please take a picture and send it in.
To finish off today I would like to show you how I have reconstituted some dry clay from the store, all the rain over the last few days has helped. I know you won't get to use it in school with me but hopefully in high school you will have plenty of activities using clay.

Tuesday 23rd June
Good morning Year 7. Hope you had a good yesterday.
Another reminder to please return any books you may still have to school . School is open every day this week with the exception of Tuesday. WE HAD ORIGINALLY SAID IT WAS WEDNESDAY CLOSED. Also can Nathan or Rebecca please return the Harrower cup?
Numeracy
Complete mental maths booklet
Geography
Rather than beginning a new numeracy booklet I though we could do The Earth sheets you got in your pack at the beginning of June.
What is latitude and longitude?
To help locate where a place is in the world, people use imaginary lines:
and this one second for a video and information
There's a quiz here to test your understanding
Now you should be ready to complete the first sheet. Do both sides but do the blank map first, then write the labels in the correct place on the second map.
The next page is about Time Zones
What are time zones?
Time zones are divided by imaginary lines called meridians which run from the North Pole to the South Pole.
There is an imaginary line running through the UK called the Prime Meridian. It runs through a place in London called Greenwich.
The Prime Meridian splits the world into eastern and western hemispheres.
Time in countries to the east of the Prime Meridian is always in front of that in the UK.
Time in countries to the west of the Prime Meridian is always behind that of the UK.
Time zones video and information here
There's a quiz to test your understanding and the picture below should help.
Now complete the sheet in your booklet called Extension: Time Zones

- To find out how far north or south a place is, lines of latitude are used. These lines run parallel to the Equator.
- To find out how far east or west a place is, lines of longitude are used. These lines run from the top of the Earth to the bottom.

Where Am I on the Map?
Today's activity is to design your own treasure map. Complete the key first, think of some of the things that were on previous maps. e.g a forest, village, winding river, swamp, rocky beach, cove, mountains, a secret island. Feel free to add your own ideas. Think of where you would bury your treasure but don't mark it on the map. Can you use all of your map skills to write a set of clues to help your mum,dad or sibling find your buried treasure? When you've finished , ask them to follow the clues to where you have buried you treasure. You might want to write the answer on a bit of paper before you begin. When writing your clues don't forget to use a key, 8 point compass directions, four-figure grid references ( some of you may want to use six-figure grid references) and distances . On this map 1 grid square = 1 km.
Please take a pic if you can and email it into school.
You may have noticed a paper copy of Battleships using 4 figure grid references in your booklet. If you enjoyed using grid references you may want to play this games with a member of your family. There's an instruction page and a game sheet each for two players. Additional copies can be downloaded below

Where Am I on the Map?
We're going to have a look at reading an os map. To read a map and describe where something is located you need to be able to use grid references. Today we are going to learn how to read 4 figure grid references which help us to pinpoint a particular square on an os map. (To pinpoint an exact point within the square you need to use 6 figure grid references which you can have a go at too _ links below )
Explanation of 4 figure grid references here Remember along the corridor and up the stairs.
Before you begin can you write a zero at the beginning of the numbers ( northings) on your sheet like the one in the pic below.

1. When you have added the zeros so your numbers read 05 -11 , can you follow the 10 clues to find the treasure on the map? The scale is 1 square = 1 mile
2. Treasure Island You have found an old treasure map .... but it isn't clear where the treasure is buried. Design and draw your own symbols for the places in 1a -1e and draw them in the key . Then place them in the correct grid square on your map.
3. Have a go at this quiz
You will need to watch this first as the last couple of question use 6 figure grid references
and this powerpoint will help too

I thought you would like these magazine strip silhouettes, so today's and tomorrow's art lesson is to create your own version. Here are some ideas . You can find lots of animal silhouette outlines here

I'm going to have a go at making a cat with this rather pathetic looking collection of Farmers Weekly, Classic Tractor, Lego magazines and Emma Bridgwater booklets😂. I will stick my template onto a piece of card before I begin. I shall report back tomorrow when I've finished it.
Have a good day year 7!
Have a good day year 7!
I worked on this last night and got it finished. Whoop whoop! I'm actually rather pleased with the result and may consider framing it. This is how I made mine
1. I stuck my cat template to a cereal packet and cut it out.
2. I ruled and cut lots of strips of paper. Oh ,how I missed the school guillotine in the photocopy room!
3. I took the other side of the cereal packet ( Crunchy Nut in case you're wondering ) and using pritt stick, I stuck the strips down to make a rectangle. I glued the cereal packet not the strips themselves. Make sure this is larger than your template.
4. When I had covered the rectangle I drew around my cat template on the other side to the strips of paper. I changed the direction of the cat to make it fit better.
4. I cut the cat out.
5. I haven't chosen a background colour but I've photographed it against a selection of colours.
6. This was strangely therapeutic but did take quite a while to complete. You may want to prepare the template and the strips today and then glue them tomorrow. I would love to see your finished creation so please do email them into the school address.

Friday update
JUST TO LET YOU KNOW THAT YOU CAN RETURN YOUR TEXTBOOKS PACK TO SCHOOL ON MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, THURSDAY OR FRIDAY BETWEEN 9AM AND 3 PM AS SCHOOL WILL BE OPEN, THANK YOU SO MUCH. ALSO EITHER NATHAN OR REBECCA CAN YOU RETURN THE HARROWER CUP PLEASE.
Work for Friday 19th June
I am just back from our very tidy and quiet classroom, doing some much needed filing and clearing(you know what my desk can look like sometimes). Thank you to the people who have returned their text books so far, we need the rest of you to do the same ASAP, please make sure you include any reading books and or library books, not just numeracy and literacy textbooks. Still a good few packs to collect with yearbooks and edibles.
NUMERACY You should have a sheet in the present pack called FOLLOW THE RULE, it has a clown with a mega phone at the top. It's a bit like algebra in that it has an equation, or number sentence, with symbols; you have to replace those symbols with numbers and always remember to do the bit in brackets first. If you are in the red or blue group you may not have time for this as you need to complete the capacity booklet, refer to Wednesday for instructions especially when balancing two sides. Just discovered I had missed the last instruction pics so here they are. THINKING SKILLS MAP WORK You have a sheet in your new pack called Map Mayhem. This involves a bit of reading carefully and then plotting the pictures on the grid, in pencil first then you could add colour. EXTENSION I would like you to design you own fantasy island and invent relevant symbols for the key, remember you don't write words on the map just symbols. GOLDEN TIME, have a bit of non screen time whether it's reading, being outdoors, playing a board game or making something in the kitchen, just not banana bread, I have too many frozen bananas. ICT I have set a variety of challenges on Purple Mash which some of you have started already or have a go at The Time Crimes of Logonator for a series of games on different levels. As promised answers to the capacity booklet. Don't cheat and look before you finish, as if you would. Answers to balance pages next week. |
Work for Thursday 18th June
YEARBOOK PACKS AND RETURNED TEXTBOOKS; THANK YOU TO ALL WHO COLLECTED THE PACKS AND RETURNED THEIR TEXTBOOKS, WE STILL ARE WAITING FOR QUITE A FEW RETURNS, AND MORE IMPORTANTLY I WOULD HAVE TO EAT THE GOODIES IN THE UNCOLLECTED YEARBOOK PACKS. PLEASE GATHER UP YOUR BOOKS AND CHECK WITH THE OFFICE FOR SCHOOL OPENING TIMES.
What a change in the weather, all your plants will have got much needed rain water( so much better than tap water) and my ponds will appreciate the natural water too.
Hope all today's work went well and you enjoyed the technology.
MENTAL MATHS Continue with the work book or go onto Purple Mash where I have set some multiplication activities according to your group level.
NUMERACY I will post the answers to this weeks work on Friday night in case your sheets were not in the same order as mine. Red and blue group please continue with the capacity booklet and refer to Wednesday's instructions if you need to. Black group you are on the copies of E18 and E19. Do this on a plain sheet of paper for best effect.
To get a near perfect square :
*measure in 1cm from the left side of the paper and 1 cm down, mark a point A.
*measure 1cm down from top and 10cm from point A and mark point B
* measure 10 cm down from A and 1 cm in from side for point D
* measure 10 cm down from point B and 10 cm in from point D and mark point C
And follow the instructions for curves of pursuit.
You can try whichever you find easiest from next page, your challenge is to work out how to draw the shape first(hint do it on squared paper then trace through on to plain)
LITERACY I hope you completed your debate, I would love to see a copy of these if you could email them to the school
If that is complete here is the art/literacy activity for today and Friday.
You should have a copy of Magazine and Newspaper Fun in the current pack but if not here is a pic of the page.
For literacy I want you to focus on the DON'T BUY IT ACTIVITY. You may want to cut out the advert and stick on A4 plain paper and annotate round the edge, remember that means make wee notes.
For the art part try either or both HEAD SWAP AND NEW HAIRSTYLES.
TECHNOLOGY Double dose this week( in preparation for next week) do whichever aeronautic one you didn't do on Wednesday so helicopter or rocket.
Hope all today's work went well and you enjoyed the technology.

Hello Y7 Mrs C back again, where has the time gone since Friday?
Hope you are enjoying looking through the yearbook, leavers' script and photo album, you made some happy memories over the year both in school and in your remote classrooms.
Any worksheets included for technology or other activities that are a mixture of literacy, thinking skills etc are for next week so put them away safely and I will post instructions for them next week.
MENTAL MATHS Please continue with your work book as you would do for Monday and Tuesday
NUMERACY For the black group who would have had NHM extension book you should now have a photocopy of Page E17
Rotational Symmetry. Look at the pic below for guidance on how you could tackle it, you maybe know already.

For red and blue groups this week you have a booklet of worksheets about capacity. I hope they are in the same order as mine but in case they aren't I am going to post pics of all my advice on each type of activity today.
You can fill it in on the sheet.
You can fill it in on the sheet.
LITERACY I am putting the literacy activity up today but you have until Friday to complete it as of course technology will get first priority.
It's week 3 June and it is teaching you how to write a debate which in real life would be like a speech maybe in parliament,
they do love debates there.
I have given you an example of how a debate about wearing school uniforms would go, so read it the have a go at your task which is
HOME SCHOOLING IS BETTER THAN REAL SCHOOLING
You need to write 6 bullet points which would agree with that and 6 bullet points to disagree, when you finish present it to the family, better than TV.
TECHNOLOGY
You have a sheet called BLAST OFF, where you are going to make a mini rocket from straws and either paper or cardboard, straws were in the last pack. If you used them all in the skeleton hand and don't have any more do the second sheet which is BUILD A HELICOPTER; both have sheets to tell you which materials you need.
Have fun with these and set yourself some challenges on height, distance etc.
ART if you have time today use squared paper with a vertical line down the centre and design a symmetrical space ship of any sort and keep the colouring symmetrical too.
FINALLY I did say my golden time last week was pond excavation, so many trowels later and feeling like an archaeologist I scraped enough for the liners to sink into the hard ground, we now have a mini pond or bird bath, sparrows love it and a larger one for who knows? Here are my efforts.

Tuesday 16th June |
Good morning year 7. Hope you got some time outside yesterday to enjoy the sunny weather. Don't forget to apply sunscreen regularly.
Your last home learning pack went home yesterday and I'm sure you have enjoyed looking through your yearbook : reading everyone's blurb and wondering how on earth the last 7 years have passed by so quickly. As with every year 7 group , we are sorry to see you leave but happy to know you're growing up and starting to spread your wings. Just think 7 more years and some of you will undoubtedly be preparing to head off to university
With regards to the yearbook, Mrs Collins and myself would like to say a huge THANK YOU to Maeve for all her hard work over the last few weeks. She has typed up blurbs, added photos , organised the layout and the cover and all the other things that need doing to create a wonderful book of memories for you all. I think we can agree she has done an amazing job!!
PS Next time you see her about the village , don't forget to say thank you. I know she'd appreciate it. Social distancing rules apply of course 😎

Numeracy
We are continuing with the same booklet but moving onto interpreting line graphs today. We will complete the work on tree diagrams next week.
A line graph is often used to show a trend over a number of days or hours. It is plotted as a series of points, which are then joined with straight lines. The ends of the line graph do not have to join to the axis. You may have seen lots of line graphs on the news in recent months as they are an excellent visual resource to track changes over short and long periods of time.
Have a look at the photos below which show temperature changes at midday over 7 days. Can you see which day had the lowest and highest temperatures straight away? Answer the two questions in the 2nd photo and check them in the 3rd.

Good morning year 7. Hope you had a lovely rest over the weekend and enjoyed the glorious weather yesterday. I spent the day in my vegetable garden helping put up a fence to keep the chickens out. Fingers crossed the fence works!
Numeracy
Today's booklet is the one with Percentage and Piecharts written on the front page.
Pie Charts
Pie charts show the proportion of answers from surveys or investigations. They are called pie charts because they are round and show the categories like slices from a pie (or a cake).
How to read a Pie Chart
To read a pie chart you must look at the fraction of the circle assigned to a particular category. You cannot tell the total from a pie chart unless the numbers are indicated somewhere on it, but you can see the proportion and compare these. For example, in the pie charts below more people in year 7 chose apples as their favourite fruit than bananas as the slice for apples takes up more of the chart.

What is a Percentage?
In French per cent translates to ‘in one hundred’ and this is the basis for percentages.
When we consider percentages we divide a quantity into 100 parts.
Sometimes it is best to find some building blocks of percentages, such as 1%, 5%, 10%, 50%. This way we can build 60%
For example,
Find 26% of 120
1% = 1.2
10% = 12
5% = 6
So, 26% = 12 + 12 + 6 +1.2= 31.2
Percentages of numbers video
BBC bitesize
The piechart on the first page of your booklet is called 'Favourite Ice Cream Flavours'
You can see that chocolate is the most popular choice with the largest slice of the pie and therefore the highest percentage( 40%). If 50 people were questioned, how do we know how many chose chocolate?
You need to calculate 40% of 50
so
10% of 50 = 5
So, 40% = 5+5+5+5 =20
Calculating 16% is a little trickier
10% = 5
5 % = 2.5
1% = 0.5
So, 16% of 50 = 5 + 2.5 +0.5 = 8
Have a go at the first 4 pages in your booklet today. The answers to the first 3 are attached below. I shall post answers the the 4th page tomorrow ( when I've worked them out too 😇)

ART
I came across these on Instagram and thought they would make a fab art project for my very creative year 7s.
The ones below are by an artist called Phil Christer. He sells limited edition wall art which uses typography as its base.

Obviously you can't do the rope climb and you may need to make a substitute hoop out of a ring of socks or a couple of sweatshirts but I think the rest are doable.
NUMERACY As you can see from your timetable it's Ks2 blue book P212 and 213
Polyominoes; you have dominoes two, triominoes three, tetrominoes four and pentominoes five. Follow the tasks on P212 and 213 and see if you can reach task 5.
ART Following on from ghost train activity yesterday I would like you to design the entrance for the train ride, it could be a huge clown mouth, a skull, a dragon mouth, an imaginary monster, it's up to you, just remember a gaping hole for the train to go through.
GOLDEN TIME For me it's excavating a hole for a plastic pond liner( a new addition to the garden) just a bigger hole than I'd thought,I will post pictures of my efforts.
ICT I have set various 2dos on Purple Mash; some typing, some reading, some numeracy and some art.
Have a great day and a sunny weekend, we hope, and look out for pack collection updates on the website.

First of all thanks for all the brilliant 2do work on Purple Mash, I have set some more starting today and tomorrow, plenty for you enthusiastic typist and readers.
Hope you enjoyed the skeleton hand challenge, pictures would be good. On that point tonight is final night to get a picture of you remote learning by email to school as I'm printing out album on Friday.
Right now the work.....
NUMERACY Answers to yesterday are posted at the end of today so I don't mess up the page.
As you can see from the instruction timetable we are all doing distorted coordinates(remember across first then up or x comes before y and the x axis is the horizontal one and y is the vertical one)
You have photocopied sheets of grids and here is the instruction page in case you don't have the book.

Next 3 pages in your Number Sequence booklet today.
I have tried to upload a video of me talking through a few examples but I'm still learning how to do this. If it works I will upload it here. If it doesn't, remember to have a look at all the numbers before you begin and draw arches either above or below the numbers and work out what the rule is , then move along from left to right or right to left depending on the question.
Mental Maths
There are lots of references in your booklet on choosing the most appropriate unit of measurement to measure distance, length , weight , capacity. The following worksheet provides an excellent talking point to discuss these with an adult. The poster is a good revision tool.

Today's activity in your "Where Am I on the Map?" booklet is a research fact file on our capital city.

Whilst browsing for videos about Belfast ( I didn't find any good ones- sorry) I discovered this video of young adults trying to locate all the countries in Europe on a map in 10 minutes. They failed miserably!
I'd like to think you could do better than them . Perhaps this could be this week's challenge. How many can you name?
Interactive quiz or you could try it on paper if you prefer

For next Monday I would like you to complete the London fact file in your WAU booklet. You have the rest of the week and the weekend to do this so it's up to you when you complete it. This will be good preparation for year 8 when you will be given homework for the following week and it's up to you to use your time wisely.

Monday 8th June
Good morning Year 7. I hope you are all well following the excitement of finding out your new school for September. I wanted to remind you that all of the staff in DPS were rooting for you and hoping you would get your first choice of school. Unfortunately, that isn't always the case. So.... when I read this poem (written by another p7 teacher and posted onto social media) I knew I had to share it with you. Obviously these aren't my words( I'm a dreadful poet) but the sentiment behind them are mine. I'm incredibly proud of every single one of you and hope you are proud of yourself too. You should be !
That's enough sentimentality for a Monday morning. You're all still mine for another few weeks !
And so to work......
Numeracy
You have a booklet in your folder called Number Sequences. This is your numeracy work for today and tomorrow.
A question on a number sequences is in most of your mental maths daily tests so I thought this video would help you.
When you look at the numbers don't forget to draw a wee arch from one to the next and write the rule above it. This is important because sometimes the rule starts with + 2 but then becomes +3, + 4 and so on. Do not assume that because the first one is +2 , they will all be the same.
Some of them also work from right to left with the gaps at the beginning of the sequence . Like number 8 on your sheet. The arches work in this example too but you're working from right to left this time.
Complete the first three pages today and we will finish the next three tomorrow.

Where am I on the map?
This week we are going to be looking at maps of the UK .
Turn to the map in your booklet and complete the UK map adding the labels in the box at the bottom of the page. Also include The Irish Sea and The Isle of Man
This will help:

Today's next page is the "Map of Cities in the United Kingdom"
Can you write the names of the cities( in the box at the bottom of the page) onto the map provided.? You can use the map above to help you. The only city from your list which isn't on the map above is Bangor in Wales so if you leave it to last you should be able to work it out. Cross their names out as you find them .
Last page for today is the map of Northern Ireland. You should know the names of all six counties but in case you've forgotten you can find a map of the counties here. We will be looking at the provinces and counties of Ireland next week so you could read the information on the link above to give you a head start.
Art
Last week I left you to finish your Escher inspired art. I finished mine on Friday evening and ended up with this so it does work out quite well but did take some time to complete. I made the mistake of using watercolour paint to paint one of the fish and all I can say is 'don't do it' . It looks dreadful and I wish I had just used colouring pencils.
Ps I am not doing it again😜

This week's art has been inspired by a lesson that L was given from her school. I had never heard of 'Zentangles' before but as I watched her completing her work, I had one of those lightbulb moments and thought you might enjoy it too. It's basically a fancy name for doodling. PS I did not steal their idea!!! Ok maybe a wee bit. The patterns are ones we see in a lot of modern colouring books so not completely new to most of you.
I have uploaded a few pics of ideas for patterns but feel free to google zentangle patterns and choose you own. I have also uploaded some template ideas which you may wish to print or I have provided the links below to a circle template, a heart template and some leaves.

Work for Friday 5th June
First of all a request; I was in school today sorting out books and art work which will be collected later in June BUT... I can't remember who owns which extra large sweet wrapper art, except of course Nathan!!!! Can you please either send a message on Y7 Blog on Purple Mash saying which wrapper is yours or email the school. AND while you are emailing the school why not include the picture of yourself doing some remote learning for the leavers' album.
Secondly I hope you all found out which school you are going to in September. It will be a new and exciting time, so why not finish your Moving On booklet.
Work for Friday should start with your virtual swim so again if it's not raining, a long time since we have seen that falling from the sky, get outside and do some lengths or laps or jumps or skips or cycles.
NUMERACY Today everyone is doing the same activity(can I just say regarding numeracy textbooks, some groups have NHM 6 and some NHM Extension, whichever you were given in your pack is the one you follow instructions for, sorry if you thought you were missing a book).
Right, back to beetle drive.
Get as many of you family who can spare half an hour, find the beetle sheet so they can copy it onto a plain sheet. Find a die or dice as we all call it or you hexagonal spinner with numbers 1-6 on it.
Then ready to play, a reminder of the rules.
1. You must throw a 6 to start with the body
2. You can add legs and a tail if you have a body.
3. You need a 5 for the head before you can add antennae or eyes.
4. Take it in turns to spin or throw.
5. First person to complete beetle gets 39 points, the rest of you have mental maths to do to get your total.
6. Start next game and carry on until you have completed at least 6 beetles.
7. Total all your games.
8. Persuade an adult to provide a prize for the winner and a booby prize for the lowest score.
If you have time get everyone to design a beetle and the best gets another prize.
DESIGN WORK
If you completed Croast Valley I would like you to do the designing a poster part.
I'm looking for big bold letters for the area.
At least 3 persuasive comments.
3 illustrations of things they will see.
ICT I have set a number of 2dos on Purple Mash(Scarlet has done a lot already so I may find more) but it is a variety of typing, number games and other activities.
GOLDEN TIME as ever is you choice. Have a great weekend.

I noticed that there is a question today on how many vertices a triangular prism has. The following should recap the properties of 3 d shapes.
BBC Bitesize link I recommend reading this and doing the quizzes.
Additional worksheet if you need to revise these in more depth
What am I? 3D shape pp quiz Test your understanding.

Numeracy
The second page in your tessellation pack is entitled 'Tiling Investigation'. Write down your predictions, explaining why. Then test your answers. You could print this sheet and then cut out the shapes to test your predictions.
Mathematical Art ?
We are going to create some Escher inspired artwork ( you will have the rest of the week to complete it)
Dutch graphic artist M.C. Escher, ,1898 - 1972, is famous for his work with mathematical prints using tessellations. He was intrigued with how maths and art could rely on each other.
The last two pages in your tessellation pack is a 'how to ' of your own tessellation artwork .
I found this video useful when creating my template. I decided to use the card from a cereal box to make my template easier to draw around. Don't do this unless you make the entire thing out of the card to begin with. I thought I could transfer my design from paper to card but it didn't work. See pics below.

So I did what any self respecting teacher does and started again!!!! 😩
This time I used a thinner square piece of card from the beginning. You can use a rectangle if you wish.
I haven't finished it ( I stopped to update this page) but I will try to get it completed by next Monday, which is when I would like you to have yours finished. This is excellent practise for next year when you will be responsible for organising your weekly homework by yourself. Photographs of my more successful attempt are below

Where in the world am I?
I hope you enjoyed looking at the world today and learning about cities you may not have heard of before.
Today we're going to concentrate on the continent we are on. Did you know that every continent on earth has a place called Rome or Roma? The USA has 9 cities named after the Italian capital. (That's another fact to file away for table quizzes in the future)
Look at the map of Europe on the next page and using an atlas, the map of Europe in your booklet or the internet, try to write down all the capital cities of the European countries. Can you learn the capital of each country off by heart and locate it on a blank European map? Test your siblings and your parents too.
This is a fantastic capital cities game to play by yourself. Have a go and then impress your family with your knowledge. I must admit that this game is quite addictive although the more you do it the better you get.

Monday 1st June 2020 June? when did that happen?
.Good morning Year 7 and welcome to a new week and a new month. Hard to believe we're now in week 9 of home learning.
Your new pack will be available for collection later this morning. As well as notes on what's included in your folder, there's some information and contact details regarding notification of your post primary school place on Thursday 4th June. We have included information on what you can do should your letter not arrive as planned.
If you are ready to start before you receive your new pack then you could complete today's mental maths test. You will notice that the topic of tessellation has now been introduced so it would be good to recap this by watching the video below
Tessellation is when shapes fit together exactly with no gaps. Triangles, squares and hexagons are the only regular shapes which tessellate by themselves. You can have other tessellations of regular shapes if you use more than one type of shape. You can even tessellate pentagons, but they won't be regular ones. Tessellations can be used for tile patterns or in patchwork quilts!

The video below recaps tessellation and if you scroll down there is a quick activity for you to complete called 'Complete the tessellation.'
What is tessellation?
Tessellation Vocabulary
In your pack you will find several sheets on tessellation stapled together. The first one is called Tessellating patterns. Having read through the information above and watching the video link you should have a good understanding of the difference between regular and irregular polygons. Your task today is to cut out the various shapes and investigate which shapes will tessellate alone ( regular tessellation) and which need another shape ( irregular tessellation). Use the sheet provided to draw your own tessellating pattern. Colour it in.
Note: You may want to stick the page to a piece of card from a cereal box to help keep it rigid before you begin. Use the cut out shapes as templates to draw around.
Tessellations in Nature Just because I found it fascinating
Tessellation colouring sheets to download
Tables
Use Hit the button regularly to keep you up to scratch with your tables. Even 10 minutes every other day will keep these fresh in your mind. If you download the app ( £2.99 and worth every penny) to your phone or tablet you can save your name and those of family members. Why not have a competition amongst your family to see who can get the best score in the best time?
WAU
You have a booklet in your pack called " Where am I on the map?.
Can you use the following link to complete the first page
Continents of the world
How many countries are on each continent? Record this in the word bank below the continent name.
The next page to complete today is the wordsearch on the 20 biggest cities in the world. Find out which continent they are on? Choose any two of the cities and find out five facts about them.

I have uploaded a screen shot of the answers to your mental maths booklet. I have looked on the site but can't seem to locate the teacher's guides atm. I will post a direct link here if/when I do find it. I hope this will be useful to parents and pupils alike. We don't have a copy of the answers in school so I've just been going over them here as I would in class. I will continue to go through some of the most tricky topics in the weeks ahead.

Work for Friday 29th May
End of the week, end of the month and end of your 2nd work pack.
It's been great to catch up with some of you and your parents and we will be in touch with the rest of you.
We are glad that you are looking at the website to keep up to date with the work and please keep sending as many photos as you like and any pieces of completed work, we love hearing from you.
I thought we would have a different Friday to celebrate the end of May. so we have 2 TECHNOLOGY ACTIVITIES AND REMOTE SUPERSTARS.
The first technology is battleships see the first 3 images, so find a brother or sister or Mum or Dad to play against when you are all set up.
The second technology is a home made cloud activity second 3 images (if you don't have food colouring a wee bit of paint might do and a teaspoon will do instead of a dropper, who has those about the house?)

Just realised 2nd battleship picture was a bit tiny.
Now on to REMOTE SUPERSTARS.
Normally at this time of the term we would do our superstars event so I thought this might be an alternative.
There are 5 events, you can do them all today or 2 today and more at the week end or next week, and your family is included in it too.
Events, all to be done in 1 minute so stop watches and paper to record results at the ready.
Shuttle runs, put a start marker in the garden and pace out either 5 or 10 metres, a big stride and another marker. How many full runs in a minute.
Toilet Roll stacking ( see picture below) Put a pile of toilet rolls at a marker and pace out 5 metres, take one roll at a time make a stack, if it falls over only the remaining rolls after a minute will count, run back for the next one.
Skittles(see picture below) in the hall or outside place 7 plastic bottles preferably empty but of any size spaced out 5 metres away then roll an object like a ball or orange, from you marker to knock down (it would be helpful to have someone to roll ball back unless you have a huge supply)
Throw and catch, a ball, orange or apple, throw up in the air and catch, doesn't count if you drop it.
Socks in the Bin ( see picture below) get a pile of paired socks like a ball, or gloves place 2 metres (and we know how far that is now) away from a clean empty waste paper bin, then see how many you can throw in the bin.

I hope that makes sense. Then to record you results and of course at the end crown your remote superstar, I hope it's you.
It would be brilliant to get some photos of you doing these to include in the leavers' pictures. Have fun.
Work for Thursday 28th May

We hope you got lots done outside today as well as some basics. Good day for a flower count, I will be interested to see and read about any of your results.
Thursday's grid is going to be an addition grid.
Across 35 23 46 74 98 77 34
Down 19 20 13 17 30 11 15
Does it matter which is across and which is down? No change it round if you wish.
NUMERACY Today you are going to change mixed numbers into improper fractions, read the instruction sheet first then Worksheet 1, worksheet 5 and the other half of the homework sheet that you started yesterday.
Answers to Wednesday's work, above and below.

I would like you to complete the literacy from yesterday and have a go at the other activities Mrs Reain put on the class page yesterday, there is plenty to keep you going.
ART Why not design an A4 size shop front for one of your imaginary businesses.
ICT and literacy based 2dos are on Purple Mash to be handed in next week, good for typing skills and spelling extension.
PE- remember to check the Spar Virtual Sports Day website for this week's activity.
Thank you for continuing to send work you have done, don't forget we need 10 minute talks to level them.

Wednesday 27th May
We hope you got your work completed ok and then got to enjoy some of that vitamin D from the sun. Please do remember that while we would encourage you to do some school work every normal school day, we do not expect you to be sitting at a desk for 5/6 hours. If/when your parents are working you may need to complete some things with them for a while in the evenings or at weekends. We hope you continue with numeracy, literacy and reading as standard. Then do what you can of the various other activities we post here and send home in packs.
So here we go with the work.
NUMERACY
We are going to be working on improper fractions and mixed numbers for the rest of the week. You have an instruction page titled MIXED NUMBERS AND IMPROPER FRACTIONS, this just is a reminder of the different types of fractions and their names. Next is a sheet telling you how to change improper to mixed and the steps and an example or two.
When you think you understand what to do try SIMPLIFY IMPROPER FRACTIONS WORKSHEET 1 THEN q 1-16 OF HOMEWORK SHEET 9. Leave the rest until tomorrow.
TECHNOLOGY This isn't about making today but testing(there will be plenty of making in the June pack)
You are going to test different members of the family for left or right brainness following these instructions and recording the findings.

You are going to test different members of the family for left or right brainness following these instructions and recording the findings.
As you can see it asks you to create some more tests , be inventive and if you can take a photo or two of yourself for the gallery and the leavers' pics that I am putting together.
LET'S HEAR IT FOR THE BEES
Outdoor activity. Did you know that bees feed the planet, without them we would starve as they pollinate all the flowers and crops. SO THIS WEEK IS DON'T MOW IN MAY WEEK.
We are being asked not to mow the lawn and let bee friendly flowers grow. I would like you to do 2 things.
1 Take a selfie with bee friendly flowers in your garden whether wild flowers(weeds) or planted like the magic sock did for me(I don't do selfies)

2 Complete a metre square census, this simply means mark out a 1metre by 1 metre square with whatever you have like bamboo canes or floor brushes and write down the name if you can of the different weed flowers, you may be like me and have daisies and buttercups, maybe some late dandelions. Then count how many flower heads of each sort. Like picture 2 of the gallery, if you don't have a lawn don't worry simply do the first part.

Work for Friday 22nd May
Friday has rolled round so quickly and by the look of the email replies and purple mash you are working really hard.
We will be reporting on your work this year and it would be great to have the extra evidence from 10 minute talks and Countdown scripts to see how far you have progressed with literacy this term.
Some people have also been emailing a selection of numeracy tasks which is great so we can see how you are coping with it.
With it being Friday please do your normal substitute swimming exercise and mental maths booklet.
PDMU: please complete these pages in Moving on booklet -Get Your Act Together and What If..... I will put up my thoughts next week especially on the What If page.
You probably would like time to complete any of the following( I was thinking this is good training for high school as you are set work for a week ahead and it's up to you to complete it)
Countdown scripts (please email on completion)
10 minute talks, (only 7 received so far)
Mrs Reain's USA fact file ( please email on completion)
Our Day Out from yesterday
If you feel you have too much to catch up on, take a breath and choose one to finish.
ICT I have set a number of 2dos for next week handing in. How could I forget golden time, have fun with a new hobby, I'm afraid my indoor one is still jigsaws!!!!! if it rains.
Monday is a bank holiday so if you want, have an official day off and get some vitamin D from the sun and some fresh air into your lungs.
Oh and here are some Roman numerals answers.

I thought it was time to share my gardening efforts from a few weeks ago.
I'm very proud to show you these pics. TADA!!!!!!!
As you can see from the first photo, my tomato plants have developed their first set of true leaves . All future leaves will look like these. (The first leaves which appear after planting are the seed leaves and don't look like the plant's normal leaves)
Once this second set have grown and are developing well, it's time to repot the seedlings. When doing this, I very gently removed the seedlings and separated them as carefully as possible. Hold them by their leaves not their roots when repotting them and plant them deep, up to their first set of leaves. This will help them grow strong roots to support the plants as they grow taller.
As you can see I have a lot of seedlings and some are stronger than others. They're currently cosy in my dining room but as they grow ( if they all make it ?) I shall have to donate some to friends and neighbours. I could even be persuaded to drop one off at your house if you promise to take care of it (and talk to it)
It will be a while yet before I have any tomatoes. If you planted some, I hope they are growing well too.

Lastly is a photograph of my gorgeous pea shoots. I have to admit that I didn't know if this would work but I am pleasantly surprised with the results. I'm going to cut them tomorrow and use them in a stirfry. I shall report back on how they taste. I'm hoping that I will be able to cut these at least two or three times (and they'll grow again )before I start the process again.
If you've been planting any seeds or growing fruit or vegetables at home. We'd love to see photographs. Somehow everything tastes better when you grow it yourself.

For the rest of the week. I'd like you to carry out some research on one of the USA states. There are 50 so lots to choose from. Perhaps choose one which you're familiar with from a TV show, one you'd like to visit or have already visited. I have cousins in Michigan, California, Oklahoma and North Carolina so I'd choose one of those. Although I would love to visit Hawaii .
Some suggestions of what to find out:
The capital city
When did it become a state?
The total area ( some are much bigger then others )
The population ( how many people live there)
Major cities
What kind of products are produced /grow there?
What's the climate like?
Names of the major rivers
Most famous citizens/ residents
What are the state symbols?
Tourist attractions
There isn't one right way to collate all your information. You decide how you'd like to present it . You may want to lay it out in a fact file or perhaps you'd prefer a poster with illustrations and some key facts. A bit like a travel or tourism poster. Like these
Remember: you have all week to complete this so please don't panic or rush to get it all done today. Enjoy and think of how useful all this information will be when you're asked to join a quiz team :)
If you can we'd love you to email a photograph or scan of your finished work to school at info@dromaraps.org.

The highest mountain in the USA is called Denali. It's in Alaska.
It used to be called Mount McKinley. It is 20 310 ft or 6190 m above sea level.
Mount Everest is 29029 ft or 8848m above sea level which makes it 8719 ft or 2658m higher than Denali. (yes I used a calculator to work that out)
Our own lovely Slieve Croob is 1752 or 534m which means you would have to stack almost 12 Slieve Croobs on top of each other to be the same height above sea level as Denali.
Note to self: memorise these for the next series of " Who wants to be a millionaire?"

Numeracy this week is learning about Roman numerals, so have a good read at the info sheet before you start. Then start with the worksheet where you change our number eg 5 to the Roman numeral V. Then you can continue with the second sheet where you change Roman to Arabic eg X in Roman and 10 in Arabic.
Literacy over the next two days is Potato Press sheet, as I have said on the general instruction sheet do not do something for every section, pick and choose your favourite and it may take more than two days; someone can let me know if you need more time.

Two 12-Hour PeriodsThe 12-hour system divides the 24 hours of a day into two periods lasting 12 hours each. The first 12-hour period is designated as am. It runs from midnight to noon. The second period, marked pm, covers the 12 hours from noon to midnight.
The abbreviations am and pm derive from Latin:
Ante meridiem is commonly denoted as AM, am, a.m., or A.M.; post meridiem is usually abbreviated PM, pm, p.m., or P.M.

Work for Friday 15th May
Good afternoon, just thinking there's another week nearly over of home/remote learning and looking at your pictures you seem to have learnt so many new things as well as work from school. Your pictures are inspirational and I have started to put together a collection of images from the gallery for you all to keep. So far I have 9, I only want to use ones with you in them doing something creative, so you can take a look at those people who have sent pictures of models they have made, seeds they have planted or maybe cookies they have baked. If you would like a picture of yourself included please email to the school and I will add it to the gallery and the collection of images on word. There is no rush just whenever you have a photo you like, who knows I might have to do more than one collection.
Thanks to Scarlet and Carter M for their fantastic sweet packages, take a look at the gallery. Also more gardening pics, we are so green fingered in Y7.

You have inspired me to do even more gardening than I usually do and this afternoon I planted strawberry plants from Mrs Reain. I will post pictures as they hopefully grow.
I have been reading another 10 minute talk and am proud to have a champion karter in the class, work out the connection, it's in the spelling!!
And another has arrived we also have a champion archer, fascinating info Scarlet, never knew about the clout.
I hope you managed to complete the crossover polygon investigation ok and got it colour coded.
I also suggested doing some pages of the Moving On booklet, one was about ranking worries about high school from 0 - 4. It would have been better to have a discussion in class where we could talk over the points and listen to each other but I hope this short set of thoughts to each worry may help.

Finishing up Friday. I know some of you will still be working on Countdown scripts and 10 minute talks which is fine, maybe you need to complete the polygons too.
If you have finished I have set some typing 2dos and a geography one.
As it should be swimming don't forget to exercise for at least half an hour, here are some images to remind you of reps.

And golden time of course, no jigsaws being done at the moment, far too nice outside I hope. If the weather is bad I got a new brush paint set, like watercolours and a felt tip together, I may experiment.
Mental maths answers for Thursday
Work for Thursday 14th May
First of all thank you to Carter M and Ruby S for Countdown to Disaster scripts and power points, enjoying reading them so much.
You will see that some classes have new work packs to collect but you have all the sheets you need until 29th May as well as our instructions on line. If you were unable to collect the pack that was available from school on 4th May it can still be picked up on Monday 18th May(see opening times on Covid 19 and home learning page).
Here are the answers to the final algebra value sheet

Take a look in gallery to see Ella and Zara's packaging designs, we also have a happy camper and his strawberry plants. Keep sending your sunshine pics.
Numeracy for Thursday is the first stage of crossover polygons investigation. It is quite straightforward if you read the instructions carefully, maybe twice before you start. All you need for the first stage is your numeracy exercise book or a plain sheet for the codes you create.
If you are speedy you will probably get on to stage 2 which needs the circle sheet. Again follow the instructions carefully. If you complete all the mapping of codes on the circle sheet you can start the colouring bit, neatly and all in the same direction( you know how fussy I am) and it may look like this. PS My colouring is bad as I only had a ball point pen or two, no felt tips!!!

You may choose to take the numeracy and literacy time to to this properly so don't worry about the literacy if you run out of time.
However if you want to do the polygons over two days and you need to complete countdown or 10 minute talks, please do.
For those of you who have finished the above literacy why not write an advert for you sweets technology challenge as if you are trying to sell it to the public, either like a newspaper ad or a tv ad.
PDMU....learn how to tie a tie for high school next year, its not as easy as it looks, get someone to show you then practise a few times and post me a picture so I can judge. You may like to do a little more of Moving On ,the next page is about worries on a scale of 0 - 4, fill it in and i will try to answer any fears I think you may have, because they are not big fears in the end.
Get rid of any stressful feelings by some outdoor exercise.

Work for Wednesday 13th May
Hello Y7, so Tuesday 5pm and time to think about Wednesday.
Thanks to Niamh and Scarlet for their countdown to Disaster scripts(I think I missed you yesterday). I have read all the ones that have been sent, they are fantastic, just what I was looking for. I also had great fun reading the 10 minute talks, I have learned about Tunisia, what makes hens different, how naughty a little dog Daisy can be and about Judy and Heidi, also pets. I look forward to more work coming in.
Talking of which still 5 blurbs and pics to come, I have selected lots of class photos to put in the yearbook and I know Maeve has it well under way.
Thank you Ruby and Kane for getting your parents to send a class photo from Y1, you were all very sweet looking.
Numeracy for Wednesday
Mental maths to start from your booklet.
Algebra, the second sheet where you need to find the value. Here are the answers to the first sheet.

Tuesday's MM answers below

Algebra all complete for the week I hope so it's on to technology.
You have a sheet called Packaging Challenge, read it thoroughly and find what you may have about the house and get designing and creating.
You probably don't have marbles but you know the size and shape of a malteser, I look forward to seeing your results.
This may take the rest of the day if you wish as I know you will want to go into plenty of detail and colour with packaging, name of product and slogan. BUT.......
if you have time and you feel like it make a start on Moving On booklet...I suggest the Looking back at my Primary page, next page on questions about high school and if you have time the Fact Finding page.
That should be plenty, don't forget to get out in the fresh air for exercise or gardening, some seeds are growing well so keep them watered, or do like I do take a book and have a half hour read.
Work for Tuesday 12th May
Firstly a big thank you to Carter, Ella, Ruby and Zara who have sent their 10 minute talk scripts and or their Countdown to Disaster, I am looking forward to reading them thoroughly, good work. I hope the rest of you are making good progress and look forward to receiving a copy.
Thanks to the people who have sent a picture of themselves in Y1, I really wanted the whole class photo if possible.
I hope all is going well with the algebra value finding sheets, I will post some answers on Wednesday.
Keep going with any literacy that needs to be completed and of course the Guided Tour activity was for two days.
I will set some more 2 dos on Purple mash on Wednesday and of course the technology challenge.

Answers to Monday's mental maths booklet

As promised here are a few more links to some topics covered in the daily mental maths booklets. I've included links to a variety of videos, worksheets and games to help to reinforce these concepts.
Square numbers
To square a number, you multiply it by itself.
This is a good visual representation of squared numbers to 100
Chart of square numbers
There are a variety of worksheets below the chart if you need some practise.
Game
Greater than/less than
When one value is smaller than another we use a "less than" sign 2 < 7
When one value is bigger than another we use a "greater than" sign 10 > 4
More info here
The photograph of the ruler may help . Think of the numbers getting smaller when you move to the left but bigger if you move to the right. It can help to replace the sign with words e.g. 2 < 7 becomes 2 is less than 7
10 > 4 becomes 10 is greater than 4
Symmetry
Excellent video explanation
A useful link for parents which goes onto to discuss reflective symmetry here. We're just revising the basics at the moment.
Worksheets
I really enjoyed this game :) Symmetry sorting
Symmetry matching
Art
Symmetrical art ideas
WAU
If you didn't get started on our new wau topic, don't worry, just do what you can .
I'm happy to report that I did complete the USA states worksheet but less happy to share my result with you all. I'll post a photo of my effort before the end of the week and we can compare scores.
This reminded me of an episode of Friends when Ross can't remember them all.
Enjoy the link. I miss you all !
What do you know about the discovery of America? This is worth watching
Work for Monday 11th May
Here we are back to school again, hope you all had a great weekend and enjoyed more sun before it vanished on Sunday.
Numeracy for today Tuesday and Wednesday will be finding the value of letters when other number values are given, see my sheet for information on how to find missing values before you start each type of sum.
For literacy if you have finished your Countdown to Disaster and your 10 minute talks can you please email a word copy to school email address so I can give them a level. If you are still working on them that is fine.
If you have completed these and are up to date the activity for today and tomorrow is The Guided Tour activity.

As you can see there are two different tours of your house, choose one or both but read carefully, it doesn't just want something like this.....
When you open the front door you go along the hall and on your right is the kitchen NO.
This might be how it goes, remember we want some trivia facts that you may have to look up on the computer....so more like this
Good morning and welcome to number 6 Lisburn Street and as you enter the house you will notice all the windows have wooden Venetian blinds. Venetian blinds you ask now why are they called that well let me explain( here is where you put some extra info). Our first stop in number 6 is the most important room in the house yes the bathroom and super fact for this room is to do with the toilet itself. Did you know where the slang word we use for something that is rubbish came from ( here you need to do some research about the man who invented the toilet bowl)?
This is what I would like.

Mental Maths answers from the end of last week are below :
The MM booklet provides good revision of many areas of the maths curriculum, Below are some links to various topics which may help you to complete it in the coming weeks:
2 D and 3 D shapes
2D shape properties
3D shape properties
Some games scroll down to the ones for 9-11 year olds
Corbett maths 2d and 3d shape Videos and worksheets
Prime Numbers
Remember a prime number is one which is divisible only by itself and one e.g. 2,3,5,7,11. Numbers which are not prime are referred to as composite numbers.
Here is a good explanation. There's a calculator at the bottom of the page which allows you to type in any number to see if it's a prime number . Yes, I did try and it really works, even for big numbers!
worksheet
Types of Angles
Powerpoint
or if you prefer a video
The photograph below is an excellent reminder of the properties of the more difficult quadrilaterals and also the various types of triangles.
It may be useful to refer to it if you get stuck.

I shall add some revision of a few more topics tomorrow . Go through these at your own pace if you need a little reminder.
WAU
Time for a new topic. Click the link below to discover what it is!
This will make an excellent cover page
This is the first piece of research I'd like you to do. Ps the answers are provided ( on the last page) but please see how many you can name before looking at them. I'll do it too and I promise not to cheat!!

As you know Friday is a public holiday to commemorate VE Day which took place 75 years ago. It stands for Victory in Europe Day and you can learn more from bbc.co.uk VE Day BBc Teach where there is a short video explaining about it and VJ Day.
Big celebrations were planned across the UK including street parties so why don't you have a garden party to celebrate. Here is a recipe for cup cakes and some pictures I found of how you could decorate them if you have the ingredients. If not why not raid the fridge and cupboards set up a picnic table in the garden and enjoy time with your family while remembering another huge time in history.

Finally, during and after the war people planted seeds to grow their own food like you have been doing so here are my efforts, see what you can do with a milk container, who needs seed trays. Have a lovely weekend with your family, hope you are all well and enjoy the weather.
Firstly I hope the hovercraft turned out ok, looking forward to any pics and reports of how well they hovered. Such a beautiful day so I hope you did some planting too, I just got some seeds so can add to my Marks and Spencer's little gardener tray. It's rocket and sunflowers so I will send you progress reports.
Answers to the second and if you had the third simplifying sheets, other answers for today's replacing will be posted tomorrow.

Answers to Wednesday's mental maths.
Seeing as it's Thursday and we have some super competitive parents, yes I have been told it's mega grid again.
Multiplying
Across 4 6 5 3 7 8 10 2 12 9
Down 8 6 4 2 3 5 7 10 9
Look forward to hearing your times.
Now for today's work on replacing letters if you finished sheet 1 it's on to sheet 2
Blue group first 3 sections if you can.
Red group first 4 sections
Black group whole page.
You might like to re read my instruction page especially for the dividing.
On to Literacy and I know you will need plenty of time to get on with your ten minute talks, please don't worry if they are taking longer than you thought, better quality and not rushed.
Thursday afternoon is art but I am just about to do a photographed set of instructions so you may wait if you are reading this on Wednesday afternoon.

Art is exploding shapes, not literally.
You need a piece of plain paper A4 if possible and I used some wrapping paper but any coloured paper you can find will do.
I tried 2 shapes firstly a triangle which as you can see was a bit too big once exploded, then a smaller square which worked better. So cut out a square, triangle or circle from the coloured paper( pic 1), about a quarter the size of the whole white page.
On the back either do straight lines or wavy just not too thin(pic 2)
Number them(pic 2)
Cut them out and as you do place them coloured side up so they are in order(pic 3)
Finally when you are happy with your explosion, stick them down(pic 4)
Pictures 5 to 8 are just with the better size of square.
Why not try all three, looking forward to seeing the results.

and answers to Tuesday's MM ( apologies for wonky pic)
Now for Wednesday's work.
Mental maths from your booklet as usual.
Numeracy- algebra replacing letters with number values, please read the first two sided sheet where I have given you a guide to this.
Then please complete Algebra worksheet 1.
Blue group do first 2 sections.
Red group do first 3 sections.
Black group all 5 sections .
A little hint about writing the letter x so it doesn't look like a x sign, I normally draw a backwards c and a forwards c to look like a curly x, look at the simplify sheet to see what it looks like, also be careful z doesn't look like a 2.
Technology Hovercraft
This is great fun to test afterwards with a hairdryer set on cool. PLEASE DO NOT TEST THIS ANYWHERE NEAR WATER AND GET A PARENT TO SUPERVISE YOU, THE FLOOR IS BEST OR A CLEAR TABLE TOP.
You have a photocopy of the template and a piece of card so Step 1 on the sheet should say cut the template out then stick on to the card and cut out again then you can follow the instructions on the sheet.
When it says score along the dotted line it means close the scissors and use a ruler to drag the blade along the line to make folding easier.
BEFORE YOU STICK IT ALL TOGETHER PLEASE DECORATE TO MAKE IT MORE PERSONAL.
Here are some photos of how to cut the centre circle out and how to attach the funnel so it is air tight

Picture 1 cutting a hole out. Put the circle over a rubber or blutak so you can pierce a hole without damaging yourself or the table.
Picture 2 cut out to edge of circle like pizza slices.
Picture 3 cut the slices off from the edge
Picture 4 cut a rectangle from paper about one third the size of A4
Picture 5 wrap it to fit the hole and stick to make a cylinder.
Picture 6 cut small 1cm in all way round one end
Picture 7 spread them out like a flower
Picture 8 slot the funnel through the bottom side of you hovercraft so the flowery bit can't be seen
Picture 9 and 10 secure the flower shape with glue underneath.
When you are ready to test set the hovercraft on a flat wooden surface and hold the hair dryer above the funnel, blow the air down and the hovercraft should hover and move over the floor.
Art if you have time after making the most wonderfully neat and well decorated hovercraft and testing them well away from water may I add, a flat table top or floor is perfect.
Take a look at the front cover of your Moving On booklet, it looks very boring so please decorate in anyway you like with multi colours or cartoons or whatever to make it special.

MISSING PAGE ALERT, NOTHING TO DO WITH TODAY'S WORK BUT IN CASE YOU HAVE CHECKED THE PACK AND FOUND THERE IS A PAGE MISSING. OOPS, I HAVE LEFT OUT THE GUIDED TOUR PAGE FOR NEXT WEEK'S LITERACY BUT DON'T WORRY I WILL POST THE PAGE ON THIS PAGE NEXT WEEK.
Answers to all numeracy sheets will be posted here later in the week so you can mark them.

We hope you all were able to collect your new packs from school and maybe made a start.
For Numeracy on Tuesday if you didn't start the simplifying equation work read Monday's instructions but if you made a start you are going on to the second sheet which is hand written and says simplifying homework. You should all be able to complete this sheet.
Literacy, continue your writing of your ten minute talk, little and often will make it seem easier to do.
There are still prizes up for grabs connected with the picture puzzle from Friday.
You will find a selection of 2dos on Purple Mash for handing in next week.
Below are the answers to Monday's mental maths questions. Mark these (if you haven't already) before completing today's.

We had talked about learning morse code before we left school in March so I've included a link below if you'd like to learn more
Morse code and worksheets
and another one
These can be downloaded or you can work from the computer if you prefer.
ps I learnt how to do links today :)
We talked about bringing in torches to practice morse code (do you remember that conversation Nathan ? ) Perhaps this is something you could try at home.
Flashlight SOS Code
and there's a website which will convert your text to morse
here
Can you find out who invented The Morse Code? I've given you a clue already.
When and where was it invented? What was the first message?
WAU or as I like to call it #Feedthenation
My trusty assistant helped plant the dried peas this afternoon. As you can see they have really expanded in the last 20 ish hours. Now we just have to wait !

I discovered this fantastic resource when googling money management skills for children . The link I've provided is a game for 12-16 year olds. I thought the activities for younger children were too easy for you all. It might be interesting to play this with a parent . You can email your results to me at the school email address. How many weeks can you survive? Have fun!
Update : I've included a picture of my results after week 23. Seems I'm quite good at budgeting but not so good at "fun" things. However, it's important to point out that in real life, you don't have to spend money to enjoy yourself. Financial security is crucial :)
Can you manage your money for three months?
Monday 4th May
Home working packs will be available for collection today Monday 4th May from 1130 - 1145.
As you won't have the pack first thing in the morning we may delay the start of the basic numeracy and literacy instructions, but if you are keen to start it's the simplifying algebra sheet which is explained in the pack, for today blue group please complete 1-15 on P62 sheet and red and black please complete 1 - 25. Answers will be posted later in the week. Literacy for the week will be ten minute talks, take a look at the instruction page and get thinking and planning.
We have included a daily MM booklet with this pack. There's a test for each day Mon - Thurs and then a Friday test at the back . We shall upload photos of the answers throughout the week.
We will start proper instructions if needed tomorrow.
Well done to Niamh, our first winner of the picture puzzle. We have two more winners, Alex and Scarlet, so three more prizes can be won.
I hope those of you who planted the tomato slices are starting to see little seedlings appear. Below is a photo of ours , which we planted on 20th April. I'm quite excited to see how these will develop in the coming weeks.
This week I thought I'd have a go at growing some peashoots. These don't need a lot of gardening equipment or knowhow and can we used in salads and stir fries. Yes ,I know they're green but they are good for you and unlike the tomato seeds , you should have your first harvest in less than a month. Apparently they can be cut and will grow again three times before you need to sow new peas. I shall report back on this .
I have included a couple of links below if you would like to have a go. One to a youtube video and another to a website I discovered while googling " How to grow peashoots" .
youtube video
https://moralfibres.co.uk/grow-your-own-snow-pea-shoots/
The link above is ridiculously long so I'll have to learn how to shorten them. My apologies. Something for me to learn tomorrow.
Along with our tomato seedlings, I've included some photos of my peashoot experiment so far. The peas I used are the ones I use for broth. I was able to buy them in Eurospar in Dromara last week. I put some into a glass and covered them with water. The young lad in the video recommends soaking them for 20ish minutes whereas the website link recommends 24 hours. I'm going to soak mine overnight and will see what they're like in the morning. The first photo was taken at 18.15 on Sunday evening and the second at 22.15 ( 22.18 if I'm being fussy). Yes I checked :). As you can see they've expanded quite a lot in just a few hours. After I took this photograph I moved them to a measuring jug and topped up the water. I rescued an ice cream tub from the recycling bin to use as my container, gave it a good wash out and filled it with compost ready to be planted tomorrow. It will fit onto my windowsill in my utility room without taking up too much room. I shall post some more photographs later.
Friday and school day is over again.
I have a little picture puzzle for you and the first 6 to send me a message on Purple Mash will win a prize. I want to know where I have been today and how you know from the picture.
You will be getting a message about new home school packs, you will be so excited to see them I'm sure, I have put a covering letter with them but to say again please don't panic when you see how much there is IT IS FOR 4 WEEKS OR MORE. We will post instructions each day to tell you which sheets to do and how much of them we expect for your group.
Keep all the photos coming and dare I mention it again BLURBS, STILL 6 TO COME, THANK YOU.
HAVE A LOVELY WEEKEND AND HOPE THE RAIN STAYS AWAY.

Work for Friday 1st May
Gallery update, take a look at some of the new pics of work from enormous Titanic to neat algebra. Thanks to all the pupils today who have emailed their work, you are such hard workers, I can't put every image in the gallery or it will tell me I'm above my limit but I am looking at them all and saving them in a folder. THANK YOU
Can you believe it will be a new month tomorrow?
First of all my grid and messy answers, I did it in 1.39 minutes but I don't think I would get much out of ten for presentation.

Right work for Friday
First of all virtual non swimming time. I suggest we all do PE and numeracy in one, like this, I reckon 1000 steps is getting on for 1 km, big strides, so I want us to either do laps of the garden, lengths of the garden, or in my case the lanes around Dromara for 45 minutes and see what we can do as a class. Please post you steps or km on Purple Mash or email along with any other work to the school.
Today's work is going to be a big finish off of the following before next wek's new set of work, more later:-Blurbs, yes still some out there
-Countdown scripts, please email your word copy for me to assess
-purple mash 2dos
-technology challenges
- Mondrian work and research
- still life drawings
When all that is completed as best you can what about the usual golden time after lunch.
I suggest no screen time, perhaps reading, baking, drawing, gardening or in my case if it's raining my jigsaw obsession.
Finally ICT, you will see I have set a couple of 2dos but if you have countdown scripts to complete do that instead.
Mrs Reain and I have been preparing you a new pack full of work and fun activities which will help you focus on high school, please look on the web page soon to see when to collect these, they should keep you going for a month.
Work for Thursday 30th April
Urgently needed six more blurbs please and photos to go with them, Maeve is making a start and you all need to be in it.
End of the month already.
What do you think of Scarlet's fantastic cork raft, now that is using your common sense, I hope you send it to sentinus they would be thrilled. If anyone else created some clever rafts please send through your pictures.
right let's get set for tomorrow.
Numeracy guess what we are starting with.......yes a grid, what else?
but....... today is a super grid 10 by 10 and just the one. When you have it drawn out and timer found write down a rough estimate of how long it will take you, I'm going to do it too and won't cheat, I will post my time.
Across 2 5 7 3 8 9 10 4 12 6
Down 10 3 5 7 9 2 4 8 6 12
Numeracy
To give you an idea of what we will be doing next week in preparation for high school I thought we would introduce some algebra where as well as numbers you can use letters or symbols, so dark blue KS2 book P152 and 153
If you read the example at the top it really is straightforward.
Now a mix of literacy and mapping skills and of course thinking skills.
look at the map below and copy out neatly on an A 4 page labelling what is there already, then read the clues and work out which road is which and label all the missing streets and buildings, keep it neat.

Finally some art, find 4 objects from round the house like my collection but more interesting trying to choose things that aren't too difficult to draw and colour then set them up on a table or clear space and get drawing, it's called still life(because it's not moving) another introduction to high school.
I have also set a few 2dos for next week in case this isn't enough!!!!!!

Work for Wednesday 29th April
Hello everyone, first of all end of day catch up. Thank you for the emails with yet more Titanic models, they are all so good, also a big thank you to Scarlet for her countdown to disaster script, absolutely perfect, I can't share it with you but look forward to you all finishing yours and sending a copy by email.
If you are still working on it keep going and if you have completed it and you can access power point or slideshow on your computer look below the numeracy work for more instructions.
Numeracy today is from KS 2 dark blue textbook, P50 puzzles if you didn't get them all done.
So these are the instructions for your powerpoint if you can do it, it may take a couple of days, if you haven't got powerpoint don't worry why not draw me a 10 image cartoon strip on an A4 page with a drawing of what you might have behind the news reader.
Now as it's Wednesday it must be technology so here is today's challenge, it does involve straws but if you have to improvise, ie use others materials, like twigs or loo roll inners or whatever please do.

And now on to art activity, please don't forget to email either dragons, Mondrian,or even the original Andy Warhol task from before Easter.
As you can see we have four monsters that you can copy out and then cleverly disguise for a forest, a beach, a supermarket and a busy street( remember those from before lock down)
I think that is plenty for today, looking forward to hearing from you on Purple Mash and some more 2 dos coming up tomorrow.

Following on from yesterday's lesson on Mondrian, I'd like you to do a little research. Write your research in your book or you can type it up and print it out.
Can you find out about the most expensive Mondrian painting sold in recent years?
Some ideas of what to include:
Where was it sold?
When?
The name of the painting and the year it was painted.
What was the starting bid ?
What was the final bid?
Can you work out what that would cost in £ if the exchange rate is 0.80 pound sterling to 1 dollar?
And finally, do you like it ? Do you think it is worth the selling price? Why do you think it was so expensive to buy?
Include a pic of the painting.
Ps I love your Mondrian art Scarlet . Well done !
If anyone gets a chance to upload a picture , we'd love to see it !
Work for Monday 27th April
Good morning everyone. I hope you have had a restful weekend and enjoyed the lovely weather we've been having. Can I just remind some of you that we are still waiting for your blurb for the Year 7 yearbook. Please email these to school asap.

This morning could you click on the link below for our favourite "Hit The Button".
Go to division and select either up to 10/12. Then select Hit the answer. Let's see if you can improve your score throughout the week.

PDMU
During the summer term in Dromara PS we would normally be starting to think about your transition to secondary school. In the next few weeks you will be finding out which school you will be going to in September. The various schools usually invite first year pupils and their parents along to look around the school and meet the members of your class or registration group in June. Only time will time if these evenings will go ahead.
In the meantime I have been having a browse of the new BBC bitesize resources and I must say I'm quite impressed with the variety of lessons, videos and worksheets they have put together . With regards to PDMU , they have a section called Transition. The first one is What's the difference between primary and secondary school? I've added a link but just in case it doesn't work ( I could do with our ICT helpers' help :) )If you go to BBC bitesize , then primary, then NI, KS2 and PDMU you will see a selection of topics ..Perhaps you could take 5 minutes each day this week to work through the 5 titles.

Finally, I thought we could look at the paintings of Piet Mondrian.
This link will tell you all about him. His work is very modern so it's hard to believe he died just before the end of the second world war.
https://kids.kiddle.co/Piet_Mondrian
Piet Mondrian Facts for Kids - Kiddle
Piet Mondrian (7 March 1872 – 1 February 1944) was a Dutch modern artist of the De stijl group. His early paintings show abstract landscapes in post-impressionist and cubist style.. He painted in an increasingly abstract style, until he finally achieved the style which made him famous.By 1920, he adopts a totally abstract motif, with an irregular checkerboard drawn with black lines, and with ...

Have a look at the photo pack below for inspiration. He didn't just draw coloured boxes!

Your task is to create a piece of art in the style of Mondrian.
You can use whatever materials you want. You might decide to use coloured paper or paint or you can simply print the colouring page I've linked to above. Perhaps you could use a sponge to do some printing? You decide .
I've attached a photo of one we made over the weekend for inspiration. As you can see we opted to use lego . We started by sorting out all the flat pieces we could find in our lego box, then sorted them by colour. We didn't have enough flat black so compromised by using the normal 8 by 2 basic brick and lots of the single length longer bricks. Our supply of pink lego is limited too, hence the very small pink rectangle in the bottom corner. From start to finish including sorting the lego, our masterpiece took about 1 1/2 hours to create. Thumbs were hurt in the making but we were very pleased with the finished result.
I may have to frame it 😉
If you wish to send a photo of your finished masterpiece to the school website I shall add it to our gallery. Have fun!

Thursday 2nd April
Where has the sun gone?
First of all a big thank you to those who have completed their geography to do, some good scores which you can improve by having a go again and finding some more like it.
Thanks for the first lovely photo for our gallery, let's have some more so we have the whole class.
Today as it's nearly the end of term and if we were all in school together we wouldn't be doing ordinary numeracy and literacy so this is what I would like you to do.
First I really need you to finish and send in your yearbook blurbs, we want to get started putting it together. Please remember they need to be 150 words and definitely no more than 200 or we may have to edit bits out.
Also your head and shoulders pic and now that the hoodies have arrived they would look great. PLEASE SEND THE PHOTO SEPARATELY AND NOT ON THE END OF YOUR BLURB TO MAKE EDITING EASIER.
RIGHT, AFTER YOU HAVE COMPLETED YOUR BLURB I WANT YOU TO COMPLETE YOUR EGG DESIGN AND IF YOU CAN EITHER SCAN OR PHOTOGRAPH AND EMAIL TO SCHOOL I CAN TRY YO PUT IT ON THE CLASS PAGE.
THEN A BIT OF TECHNOLOGY WHICH MAY TAKE LONGER THAN TODAY.
BUILD YOUR OWN SCALED DOWN TITANIC, I RECKON YOU SHOULD HAVE SOME OF THE FOLLOWING ITEMS:
SHOEBOX OR CEREAL CARTON
KITCHEN ROLL TUBE OR LOO ROLL TUBE
SMALLER BOXES LIKE TOOTHPASTE OR BISCUIT
SOME PAPER
LIDS FROM MILK OR DRINKS( FOR PORTHOLES)
Take a look at on line images and I know you will have better ideas than me.
TOMORROW WE WILL HAVE A NON WRITING NON MAKING ACTIVITY FOR YOU SO SEE YOU THEN.

Found this and it brought back memories of some PE sessions, give it a go after lunch. Do each one 10 times in total or 5 either side then repeat whole routine again.
Wednesday 1st April
Good morning Y7, you don't have to do any work today because..... what date is it?
April fool's day!!!!! Anyway you do have work to do so here we go.
As it is Wednesday you have 4 new speed chains to have a go at.
Basic 1. 3 + 4 x 8 + 4 div by 10 x 2 div by 3 x 4 - 1 div by 3 x 6 + 2 =
Basic 2. 8 div by 2 x 6 - 3 div by 3 x 5 - 5 div by 6 x 9 + 3 div by 6
Extension 1. 8 squared + 1 div by 5 x 2 + 13 div by 3 x 4 - 2 div by 5 the square the answer=
Extension 2. 32 x 2 find square root of this x 9 div by 10 x 2 x 10 square root x 9 =
Good luck.
I have also set a geography to do on purple mash, to do with European countries. I know who will be good at that.
Please carry on with the other work we have set in numeracy and literacy.

Ok, apart from the technology photo which crept in, well done again, we have a step by step picture montage showing you how to create the cartoon repeats that I mentioned in November 2014 archive page.
So step one, divide a page into 4 equal parts portrait wise.
Step 2 copy from an image or make up your own character.
Step 3 find a piece of tracing or grease proof baking paper that is the size of you character and draw over the lines.
Step 4 take the tracing paper off the page, turn it other way up so pencil marks are touching the table or a rough piece of paper, then scribble along every line on the back. (This picture should have scribble marks on the back)
Step 5 put it the right way up with the scribble underneath in your next rectangle.
Step 6 (with me still?) draw over the lines again and your character should appear faintly in the rectangle.
Step 7 repeat this twice more in the other two rectangles, so four identical images.
Step 8 Choose 5 or 6 colours and colour the character and background of your first picture, remember to colour properly, not scribble!!
Step 9 take a look at the example in the archive to see that if the t shirt was green in first image it cant be green again but maybe pink. You are only allowed to use the same 5 or 6 colours. Only use black for fines lines or outlining.
Good luck

Work packs have been prepared for you and we hope you will work through them over the next few weeks. If we need to give you anymore information we will leave a note here at the top of your class page. A letter is going home to your parents today about collecting them, also with info about hoodies and Greenhill.
It would be great if you could send a head and shoulders photo of yourself, preferably in your school shirt and sweatshirt for us to include in the yearbook.
New way of thinking, more logical to put fresh posts at the top; save all that scrolling!!!
Tuesday 31st March
Good morning and I hope you've made a start to the basics.
Here hopefully is the next bit of art work. Sorry it's jumped to the top of the page, usual techno problems.
Thank you for more of your blurbs we can’t wait to get started on putting the year book together so keep them rolling in as well as a photo.
I am going to find pictures of other activities so far this year to include.
Have you had a go at the to do on purple mash, I will put another one on tomorrow connected with geography so take a look.
Why not do Hit the button for mental maths.
Monday 30th March,
Good morning all and hope you had a good weekend in the lovely sunshine in your garden. I hope you gave yourself a break from school work.
Anyway back to routine. You should have plenty of work in your packs, some mental maths warm ups then some basic numeracy and to follow either some comprehension or grammar work.
If you have a chance in between all that can you have a go at starting your year book blurb. Already received a nice happy photo from one of you.
Im sure you’ve seen the stem flyer on the website so check it out for a technology activity, no need to wait until Wednesday.
Any more egg designs done?
The new activity for this week is connected with a favourite cartoon character, so check out the archive pages for y7 for November 2014 and see what I will be giving you advice on how to do them tomorrow.
And finally, please check your alerts on purple mash.
Right enough of listening to me, have a good day.
Tuesday 24th March
Hello everyone, hope you are getting on with your home pack. Just thinking as we all love our art so much and it is just as important as numeracy and literacy; I would usually do an Easter art class competition. So, take a look at the archived pages at the bottom of the class pages section and go to Y 7 2017 2018. Then scroll to April 2018 and take a look at the pics of giant egg designs. Draw a large egg on A4 paper then get designing. When we get back to school I will judge and display your work.
I am going to set a daily extra speed test to keep you all in the routine, you know how we all love routine. But until then keep up with your work but please have a go at the art challenge and keep up with some exercise if it’s only slow squats and some running on the spot a few times a day.
If you could share this info on the y7 group that would be great in case people miss it.
Wednesday 25th March
Good morning Y7, I feel I should be taking the register to keep the routine and hear you reply “Present Mrs Collins.”
Anyway firstly it’s Wednesday speed chains. Here are four altogether, two basic and two extension. Answers tomorrow.
Basic
6 x 2 + 2 div by 7 x 9 div by 3 x 8 + 2 div by 10 x and 5 - 1 div by 3 =
8 + 5 + 2 div by 5 x 9 + 1 div by 7 x 5 + 1 div by 3 x 6 - 2 =
and then
Extension
5 squared - 1 x 2 x 2 + 4 - 19 div by 9 x 7 + 2 div by 5 x 3 =
17 x 3 + 5 div by 2 - 3 x 3 - 5 div by 10 square the answer - 3 div by 2 - 7 div by 4 =
If you feel like challenging anyone else in the house please do, I hope you win.👍
Sorry about lack of dividing signs, can’t find them on my iPad keyboard.
When you get round to writing your blurb for the year book and need a bit of inspiration about what we have done so far this year, take a look through the pictures on the class page.
Its also quite interesting to look at the archive pages to see your pictures from way back.
Thursday 26th March
Good morning everyone.
First of all answers to yesterday’s basic and extension speed chains.
Basic number 1 was 8 and basic number 2 was 40.
Extension number 1 was 39 and basic number 2 was 4.
Right, it’s Thursday so that can only mean one thing, yes grids. Did I hear a collective moan?
To make the annoyance of doing it easier by challenging someone else in the house?
Get you L shaped grids drawn, yes we are doing two as usual, find a stop watch and here are the numbers for each grid.
Grid one, across 6. 7. 9. 8. 4. 5. Down 3. 4. 10. 6. 8. 7
Grid two, across 8. 4. 6. 9. 7. 4. Down, 10. 3. 8. 7. 6. 4
Ok, ready, off you go.
Now as for other things: thanks to the people who have emailed their yearbook blurbs; lovely positive memories.
I’m giving Purple mash a go setting a task but not sure if it has worked, can you check and send me a message on Purple mash, I’m going to try again today.
Hope the Easter egg designs are going well, there will be a new art activity next week.
Friday 27th March
Good morning everyone and I hope you are all well and doing some school work.
Thank you to the people who have completed the purple mash Titanic to do, I now know it was successful.
If if you want a bit of interactive mental maths try mental-arithmetic.co.uk and scroll down to online tables quiz, there are two versions.
Otherwise keep up the good work and don’t forget the egg design for art because there will be a new one next week.
Welcome to the year 7 class page, we hope you find the photos and information interesting and we will keep it updated as often as possible so you can keep track of all the activities and school work.
This year will involve a lot of hard work for all but along with that there will be plenty of fun, lots of opportunities to try new things and time to make the next steps in our school careers.
Take a look at these pictures on our second day of September and then maybe look back at the end of the year to see how much we have matured.

Bridge Building in Technology
The school has purchased a kit to help us learn about the mechanics of bridge building, so as Y7 we were given the chance to test it out in our science lesson. It was really easy to use although following the instructions proved tricky for some of us but we learnt how to construct and cooperate with our building team to achieve the result.
CLASS OF THE WEEK SEPTEMBER 2019
We are very proud to report that we, Y7, have been awarded the cup for class of the week. We earned it by setting a good example to younger children in assembly, lining up and generally being good role models around the school; as well as hard work in class.
WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS
Year 7 took part in a primary schools' sports event at the High School Ballynahinch competing against half a dozen local schools. They took part in a variety of different sports which involved hockey skills, netball skills, cricket skills and football skills among many others.........and Dromara Team 2 won the event.

Engineers of the Future
We have still been experimenting with the school's new bridge building kit, bought with funds from the PTA, as well as our k'nex kits and we have built different cantilever style bridges similar to the Forth Rail bridge in Scotland.
Picasso Faces
Over the last two weeks in art we have created our idea of a Picasso face using pastels, here are the finished products. Very impressive, hard to tell the difference between ours and a real masterpiece.
Taking it a step further, and learning new techniques in pottery we are now making these faces into ceramic tiles. Here we are scratching, slipping and blending!!
Ceramic Picasso Faces
The finished products!!! Faces all fired in the kiln, with a few minor breakages but with a coat of paint they are looking brilliant.
We wonder what Picasso would have thought of these.

Class of the week again!!!!!
Reading Week
To celebrate world reading week we teamed up with Y3 and read them stories, we all loved it; hope to do it again soon
Hallowe'en hamper winners
Y7 made up 4 hampers stuffed with enough sugar to sink a ship(or to keep a dentist busy!), here are the 4 lucky winners.
We Are The Champions Again!!!!!! Class of the week again!!!!
We are very proud to report that for the third time this term we have been awarded the class of the week; we must be doing something right. We are so happy; another night off homework as a reward.
Spring Flower Planting with LCCC
Y7 were invited by LCCC to help with planting hundreds of spring bulbs to brighten up the Lagan Park walkway. So on one of the muddiest days ever we pulled on our wellies and grabbed our spades and trowels and set to work. We had great fun and look forward to seeing the colourful display in the new year.
Christmas Sleigh Technology
AQE is over and Christmas is coming and a tradition in Y7 is to create a Santa sleigh out of shoeboxes and other junk material, so early December we made a start.
Some weeks later
After several sessions of cutting, sticking, designing and redesigning we finally have the completed sleighs; the rest of the school really enjoyed judging them.
Christmas Cup Cakes
Christmas is coming and there's always time for cakes. Y7 brought The Bake Off to Dromara. We spent the morning beating, folding and blending our cake mixtures and when they were baked the rest of the time seeing how much icing we could spread on top followed by sprinkles and decorations. Very professional results.
Technology Challenges Start
Welcome to 2020 and a new term brings the weekly technology challenge in preparation for the STEM Sentinus challenges where we can compete against other schools.
Our first challenge was to build a buggy which could be powered by the wind, in other words us flapping a cardboard sheet; they would have been blown away outside. Here are some of the finished machines.

K'nex Technology
In preparation for the Sentinus Challenges later this year we have been working in pairs to improve our building skills with the k'nex kits. This week's challenge was to design a merry go round with chairs that would rotate while still being stable and here are the results.
Ballynahinch High School Taster Day
We were very kindly invited to The High School Ballynahinch for an exclusive taster day having been unable to attend one last week for lots of different schools; we were very privileged. The day included technology, science,HE and art where we learnt plenty of new skills and felt what it was like to be in Year 8. Not only were the lessons really good but we were treated to break and lunch; chicken nuggets and chips are always welcome. A big thanks to Mr Marks, staff and pupils for a brilliant day.
IT'S A WRAP
Cadbury's look out we have some super sized chocolate wrappers! We have been using our artistic skills and creating giant versions of our favourite sweets. Take a look at the results.
TECHNOLOGY CHAMPS
Congratulations to our team of three technologists, they won the local STEM challenge heat at Our Lady's Grammar School in Newry. They competed against 10 other local schools and have progressed to the finals. We have to keep their winning design under wraps as they are now going to challenge the rest of the class to complete the challenge.
WORLD BOOK DAY
Year 7 celebrated World Book Day by reading stories to Y3. They had a great time and to see the looks on the faces of the younger children was a real treat. Good work Y7.
