Friday 26th Dairy Council and Sportathon
Y6 began their day with exercise and ended their day with exercise. Molly from the 'Dairy Council' came to speak to us about healthy food and fitness. Everyone listened carefully and participated well.
In the afternoon we had our annual 'Sportathon'. We were once again lucky with the weather; Mr Blakely did a brilliant warm-up and all races went to plan. I think the children were thankful for the ice lollies at the end! (Thank-you Alison for collecting them from Eurospar)
Tuesday 16th May
Year 6 took a break from tests and went on a visit to McDonalds, Banbridge- we had a great time and were treated so well by John, Rita and Stephanie.
Shared Education-
We have been participating in shared education with St Michael's PS working on maths activities which involve IZAK 9.
5th May- Coronation Celebrations
The children dressed up in various outfits and aswell as ordinary work they studied Colin Tinsley's book 'The New King' with competitions galore. The PTA had produced a craft pack for the children and they made a peg Royal Soldier. I would like to thank the PTA who entertained the children throughout the day with, badge-making, icing royal biscuits and fun and games with pin the diamond on the crown. A lot of time and effort was given by the parents- well done, we all really appreciated your hard work!

3rd May- Special Coronation Assembly
On Wednesday 3rd May we welcomed parents from our PTA, Mrs Irene Martin from our Board of Governors and the Mayor of Lisburn and past pupil, Scott Carson. The hall was decorated with beautiful bunting which the children had created to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III. We also filled our time capsule with the children's written work, photographs and a Belfast Telegraph newspaper from that day. This will be kept, padlocked in one of our glass cabinets, not buried and then opened in a couple of decades time.
After the assembly we all went outside to watch the Mayor plant an apple tree to mark the coronation of our new King and Queen.

April 2023
Back to school on April 17th- a busy third term lies ahead for Year 6. We need to continue our 'Irish Myths and Legends' topic, continue with 'shared education', enter competitions, go on school trips, participate in sports and celebrate the coronation of King Charles III.
Looking forward to all of the above aswell as seeing all of Year 6 achieving their full potential in their academic studies.

Visit To The Mayor
Visit To The Mayor
After swimming Year 6 went to the Island Centre to meet with the Mayor of Lisburn and Castlereagh, Scott Carson. They were greeted with juice, crisps and chocolate muffins, which put everyone in a good mood!
Scott gave us a guided tour and everyone got a seat in the council chamber. He gave us lots of interesting information about the workings of the council and also facts about the city of Lisburn and Borough of Castlereagh. Year 6 listened well and asked many questions. After this we took a seat in a very comfortable Mayor's parlour where the children and adults had an opportunity to try on the Mayor's chain of office. The children were then all presented with goody bags and the adults received pens or handy shopping bags.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Scott for his hospitality and kindness to us- we all had a really informative and enjoyable time. So proud of my ex pupil!

February 2023
Before half term the children had a great time at their Valentines Disco. We also had a very worthwhile session from 'Hip' providing lots of tips to help with anxiety from belly breathing to 3 point turn methods for dealing with anxious thoughts.
Year 6 visited the Ulster Museum on 1st February.
We first had a 'Discover Nature' lecture from Nicola about animal skulls. Looking at the skulls, which ranged from Polar Bear to Duck Billed Platypus, allowed the children to discover what the animals ate and how they hunted. I was very impressed by Year 6- they knew every skull and some members answered very difficult questions. We were taken by Jackie to the Egyptian room which held the mummy, 'Takabuti'. The children were very impressed at what they saw and I think the process of 'mummification' really hit home ie. bodies were able to be preserved by these people for thousands of years.

Next we met Mrs Baird who took us to the 'learning zone' for our Egyptian lecture. Firstly the children discussed the benefits to Ancient Egyptians of the 'Nile'. The 'mummification' process came next. The children again impressed me with their knowledge by how they answered the questions. The children were also given time to handle lots of artefacts, many being thousands of years old.
Finally, the children discussed in groups certain jobs held by the Ancient Egyptians- scribe, makeup artist, jewellery maker and embalmer. Mrs Baird wanted specific things from each group and Year 6 obliged. After lunch the children were able to visit the shop and then it was time to return to Alistair and the bus for our journey back to Dromara.
January 2023
January has flown by as Year 6 have been revising for and completing tests. Everyone has worked very hard.
As well as this they have had fun with Miss Briggs completing a technology challenge- good teamwork, ingenious designs and creative back stories.

They also had great fun in the snow.
On Wednesday 25th January an ex pupil of Dromara PS and now the Mayor of Lisburn and Castlereagh, Scott Carson, visited assembly. Year 6 asked him questions and a member of the class wrote a lovely poem for him.
The mayor also helped me give out gymnastics certificates. It was lovely to catch up with Scott- he left Dromara PS 23 years ago. Both children and adults enjoyed his powerpoint about his duties as Mayor and we wish him all the best for the remainder of his time in office.
Year 6 will finish 'The Egyptian' Topic with a visit to the Ulster Museum on Wednesday 1st February.
Their next topic will be 'Flight/Transport.

The children all had a lot of fun in the games' room. We had experts at building bricks up high; using chopsticks to move Maltesers; scoring goals; hooking ducks; getting the brick closest to the tub of sweets and trying to get three in a row with the balls on the 'target tent'.
Everyone had an opportunity to try every game and lots of prizes were won. A great first 'Festive Friday'.

Wednesday 16th November
Julie Kinkaid, a parent and District Nurse Sister visited our class on Wednesday 16th November. She gave a powerpoint presentation explaining how she became a nurse and her journey so far. She also taught the children how to do 'CPR' on Annie (the dummy); She talked about DRS ABC
D stands for danger
R stands for response
S stands for shout
A stands for airway
B stands for breathing
C stands for CPR
Julie also demonstrated putting a person into the recovery position by using a pupil as a model. At the end she answered some very good questions from the Year 6's. All in all it was a great ending to our 'Human Body' Topic and I would like to thank Julie for giving her time to us on her precious day off.

Tuesday 15th November
Year 6 were very excited to attend the 'Business Masterclass' held in Lisburn Island Centre and organised by 'Young Enterprise.'
The children had a presentation which expanded their vocabulary about terms connected to business. They were then set a task which involved making a tower out of dried spaghetti, marshmallows, string and tape. To my delight one of the Dromara groups came joint first. Well done!

After an interesting talk by an entrepreneur- John, who owns 7 McDonalds restaurants the children had break. They got to take part in a 'Global Marketing Challenge.' This entailed the children reading information about a pretend country and then developing a product to sell to that country. Year 6's ideas were fantastic and I have given them time in class to make a presentation about them focusing on promotion and product design. We had another winner that day, who had asked the most interesting question- well done!

Sponsored Walk- 7th October
What a beautiful day for our sponsored walk. The sun had come out and the children were full of energy and excitement. (As you can see from the pics!) Year 6 had also collected a lot of their sponsor money for Friday 7th. It will be a great boost for school funds when all the other donations come in. Thank- you parents and friends in advance!

Welcome back everyone to Year 6. I hope you have all had a great summer break and are ready for the school year ahead. Parents, please keep checking and signing your child's homework diary and reading diary- there may be messages from me in them from time to time.
All children need to have their books backed and get a dictionary.

Year 6 begin their 'Human Body' topic-
I shall be catching up with some parents about their children in the week beginning 5th September. At the start of October you will all receive a 'tick sheet' report of how your child has settled in.
Our first topic is the 'Human Body' and this will be followed by 'Ancient Egypt', after Halloween. Depending on the Covid situation I hope to have visiting speakers and also class trips connected to our topic work.
Please remember education is a process which requires input from the pupil, the teacher and the parents. I thank- you for your contribution in advance and look forward to working with your children this year.
