June 2022

24th June
Year 6 also got to have lunch in 'The Village Grill' and had a great time in Dromara Park.
Thanks to Mrs Burns' Year 7 group for organising 'Movie and Mayhem' in aid of 'Daisy Lodge' which looks after children who have cancer and their families. The children throughly enjoyed the scavenger hunt!
22nd June
The football tournament took place on Wednesday 22nd June. Dromara had three teams competing and had pupils from Year 7,6 and 5. Dromara A team got to the final after playing exceptionally well. Well done to all the pupils taking part and congratulations to Fairhill PS who were the overall winners
21st  June
Year 6 girls were involved heavily in Dromara A and Dromara B netball teams. They played well but were up against teams made up completely of Year 7 pupils. Congratulations to all the teams who took part and especially Fairhill PS who were the overall winners.
Thursday 16th June
Year 6 Portrush Trip
Just some snaps of 'The Giant's Causeway' and 'Curry's'. The children were fantastic- impeccably behaved and incredibly independent. I was so proud of them. Recount writing about the trip will follow soon.

 June 8th
The children had great fun and plenty to eat whilst celebrating the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. Both children and staff were excited to meet our special guests
The children also received a beautiful keepsake book and bookmark about the Queen's reign and her duty to the Commonwealth

May 2022

On Friday 27th May we had our annual 'Sportathon'. We got superb weather and everyone had a great time with all the games. Thanks to Melissa and the Year 6 helpers for bringing out equipment and also bringing it back in again. Thanks to Mr Armstrong for the ice lollies they were much appreciated at the end of the afternoon.
May has been a very busy month for Year 6. They have all completed standardised tests in maths, english and reading. They have also completed their class tests which you should have seen, signed and returned to me already. The children have all worked very hard and performed to the best of their ability.
On the 26th May we had Wendy Donaldson from the 'Livestock and Meat Commission' to give us a cookery demonstration. Wendy also told us about 'Farm Quality Assured' meat and how it is traceable to the farm it comes from. She made the children sweet chilli mince pasta and I must say it was very tasty. She also mentioned that 'Farm Quality Assured' meat has to pass about 87 tests before being sold to the public. Each child received a recipe booklet so you can all try to make the chilli beef for yourselves. I don't think you'll be disappointed!

April 2022

8th April- After show party and kite flying to finish 'Flight' topic.
I hope you all enjoyed the show, it was great fun and the children were fantastic! Have a lovely Easter break, let's hope we get good weather and a well deserved rest. Take care and stay safe.
All go for 'Ali Baba and the Bongo Bandits'. The children have worked so hard both in the classroom to keep up with their academic studies and on the stage to make this the best production possible. Many thanks to all the staff who helped in so many different ways- a real team effort was required.

March 2022

World Book Day 2022
No dressing up for world book day this year- too much preparation needed for school production. The children were asked to bring in their favourite books and read a passage from them to the class. They then answered questions about their particular book. An interesting range of books was discussed.

January/ February 22

January has passed so quickly for Year 6- what with revision, tests and the dreaded Covid. We managed to finish our 'Ancient Egypt' topic also. As you can see from the photos the Egyptian jewellery featuring 'scarab beetles' looks very grand indeed.
On February 2nd Dylan and Gabby became our 'Dromara Dynamos.'

Year 6 also had fun on the Gym-time equipment (financed by the PTA). They were working on gymnastic balances- very impressive!
Also many thanks to Amanda, Jenna's mum for baking the beautiful birthday cake which we had on Friday 4th February. It was delicious.

December in Year 6

Dear Parents,
Melissa and I would like to thank-you for all the lovely presents and cards- we really appreciated these acts of kindness. We would like to wish you all a wonderful Christmas and a happy, safe 2022!
Friday 17th December
This was our last 'Festive Friday'- Christmas jumper and photo booth. Year 6 also had a little stall going which the Year 3's really loved.
Picture
We also had our class party with games, dancing, food and far too much fizzy juice! Great fun and we shall continue on Wednesday 22nd.
Friday 10th December
Second 'Festive Friday'- lots of little elves wrapped presents for mums and dads. We do have photos and hopefully no spoiler alerts!
Wednesday 8th/ Thursday 9th
Year 6 recorded their pieces for 'The Christmas Production'. Many thanks to Mrs Burns for videoing- she was amazing (so were Year 6).
Friday 3rd December
First 'Festive Friday' was held. Year 6 had great fun in the games room. Lots of prizes were won.
Tuesday 2nd December
Christmas dinner day- Year 6 had a ball with crackers, Christmas music and dancing whilst eating their dinner!
17th November 2021
Jackie from 'REACH' (Resilience Education Assisting Change to Happen) has visited our classroom for six weeks teaching the children about RESILIENCE through games and powerpoint material. We have had great fun with her as well as an excellent educational experience. Wednesday 17th was her last day and I was really impressed at what the children had taken in and remembered. Enjoy the pics.

October 2021

October has been a strange month for Year 6, with many absences and myself having to isolate.
However, the work went on, thanks to Mrs Vaughan. The children have also been having 'Resilience' teaching by Jackie who is from the 'Reach' organisation. I shall include photos of this next month as we are half way through the course and have three further sessions.
Year 6 have also been revising for September/October tests. The results of which have been shared with parents at parent interviews during the week beginning 18th October. (Please return, signed, to me, thanks)
On Wednesday 20th October we had a lovely assembly for Kenny Hanna, the minister of 2nd Dromara Presbyterian Church. He leaves his position on 31st October to be the only rural pastor in Ireland. The children in Year 6 made him a card and I was so proud of them as they sent Kenny such lovely wishes within it.
On the last day before half term, 22nd October, the children were treated to gorgeous Hallowe'en cupcakes from Jenna's mum, Amanda Fitzpatrick. They were delicious and enjoyed by all- thanks so much Amanda!
We also had the draw for the Hallowe'en hampers by Mr. Armstrong- such excitement. Here are the winners- Abby, Ella and Abbie.
All the children got a little Hallowe'en bag of treats provided by Melissa, my classroom assistant and myself. (Thank you Melissa)
We continued with 'The Human Body' topic and all the children became doctors using stethoscopes and a blood pressure machine- great fun!
Have a restful half term break everyone- stay safe!

Sponsored Walk - 1st October

24/09/21- European Day of Languages

'Italia Day'

Year 6 had been preparing for 'Italia' Day during the week beginning 20th with fact-finding homework, geography- placing some main cities on 'the boot' and historical videos about the founding of Rome and the Roman Empire.
When Friday 24th arrived we were all set to start with learning of the language- 'Hello', 'Goodbye', 'Good morning', 'My name is' and of course 'numbers 0-10'. I was so proud of Year 6, they were great with pronunciation and accents after such a short time!
Next came traditions and I decided to focus on the beautiful masks connected to Venice. After this the children made their very own masks- great fun!
Take a look at the photos and thanks to all the children for dressing up and also thanks to Ballynahich Kitchen for providing Italian dinners on 24th. The teachers, classroom assistants and non- teaching staff all enjoyed a beautiful Italian lunch- what a spread- just gorgeous! Thanks to Mrs Burns for co-ordinating and all the teachers for providing.
A great day was had by all!
Year 6, at work.
Year 6, at play.
September 2021
Pupils, parents and friends- welcome to the Year 6 website. I try to update this at least twice per month. I will let you know what has been going on in the classroom with photos, written work and the experiences your children are having. Up until half term our topic will be the 'Human Body' and after that 'Ancient Egypt.'
Please look out for the 'curriculum content' information which I shall be updating and adding shortly.
