END of YEAR REPORTS
Parents - please collect your child's end of year report on Tuesday 30th June from the school office.
They will be available to collect between 10.00am and 1.00pm.
Please return any school textbooks/reading books when you come to collect the report. It would be appreciated if you could put the books into one of the manilla folders from the pupil packs or a plastic bag with your child's name on it.
We really need to get these books back as there are many hundreds of pounds worth of books, that we can't afford to lose.

Thank you.

Monday 29th June

Friday 26th June

This is the last day of our 'China' topic. I have printed some facts out for you to read. Hopefully from all your research you will have seen some of these facts before. If you haven't, research the unknown fact a bit further to fully understand its meaning.
Please look at this class page on Monday 29th June- for magic maths activities which you will enjoy when you're bored during the summer.

Thursday 25th June

Attention parents- when you collect your child's report on Tuesday 30th June please return the following text books that your child may have:
  • Collins Comprehension Skills Pupil Book 5
  • Maths on Target 5
  • Reading Book
  • Reading Diary
  • Any library van books
Please put in a plastic bag with your child's name on it so that I can mark off from my records.
Many thanks, Heather Milligan.

Endangered animals.
Pandas- China's national symbol- are no longer an endangered species.  From the 1960's China established panda reserves. Read the 'Panda Facts' [they are big eaters!] Then complete the 'Endangered animals' worksheet [they don't have to be from China.]

Wednesday 24th June

Picture
Work with someone in your family and complete the 'Chefs at work' worksheet.
I have included a Chinese restaurant menu to help you. My favourite main course is 'King Prawn Chop Suey.'
When you have completed your worksheet study the menu and ask your family what they would like to order. Use your maths skills to see how much this would cost.
Remember to set your work out in an orderly way-
                                          £
e.g. Salted Chilli Squid- 5.70
Fried Chicken in Satay- 6.80
Sauce
Special Foo Yung-          6.80                etc etc [keep in line!]

Tuesday 23rd June

Rice production in China.
Find out by using your research skills:
  • How is rice grown?
  • Where is rice produced in China?
  • What type of rice is grown in China?
  • How much rice is produced per year in China?
  • One more amazing fact about rice?

[You will find videos connected to rice growing if you google 'rice production videos for kids.' Try to find one that links only to China- Clue: Wild China- BBC]
*Remember to finish your '2Do' on Purple Mash- save it and send it to me.
Well done Adam Younge and Amy Dougan- superb Chinese lanterns🤩

Monday 22nd June

You all had a comprehension connected to a Chinese traditional tale- 'The Dragon Pearl.' Please complete the comprehension before trying this activity.
Picture
You will find lots more Chinese stories if you google Chinese traditional tales ks2 and go to 'Chinese Folk Tales/ Faiytalez.com
Make a list of the stories you read- research any Chinese terms that may occur in your reading e.g. in 'Bamboo and the Turtle' it mentions 'mandarins'- what are mandarins? Remember Year 6 if you don't know the meaning of a word you must look it up in a dictionary in order to extend your vocabulary.

Friday 19th June

Chinese Paper Lanterns.
I want you to try to make a Chinese paper lantern- you will find an information video to help you if you go to: Youtube- kidspot [Chinese paper lanterns]. The ones shown on this video have not been decorated so before you do any cutting or sticking remember to decorate the paper first.
Send me a picture of your lantern or lanterns, I would love to see what you have created.
Picture
Remember you can decorate it in any way you want- but perhaps dragons, Chinese writing or the animals that represent Chinese New Year could be added, it's totally up to you!

Thursday 18th June

Picture
You may have discovered this when you have been researching the 'Chinese New Year'. Find out which animal you and members of your family are represented by. I am the year of the 'Monkey' but my birth year isn't mentioned on this- can you work it out by counting back- Ox will be 1973. Just be careful- I'm not that old!!

Wednesday 17th June

Research Chinese New Year. [ Google Chinese New Year Facts for kids]
I have set you a '2 Do' on purple mash connected to this. You will be writing a newspaper article about Chinese New Year. Remember only use facts that interest you and you think will interest your readers; use pictures to make your work eye-catching; and remember to use accurate punctuation, grammar and spelling.

Tuesday 16th June

Monday 15th June

Lucky, lucky, lucky!
Read all about the Chinese lucky symbols.
Think about these and then try to design a lucky symbol for yourself. It might be an animal, number, a picture drawn in your favourite colour- it is totally up to you!
Picture

Friday 12th June

Here are some parts of a Chinese dragon. Can you copy them and make them into your own spectacular dragon? Draw this on a blank sheet of your WAU book.
To help, you can google: Chinese dragons and go to images or how to draw a Chinese dragon [Youtube].

Excellent writing Amy D!

Thursday 11th June

Learn the Chinese numbers and practise writing them on a page in your WAU or home learning book. [You can hear me saying them on the Purple Mash to do.]
Picture

Wednesday 10th June 2020

Practise the Chinese writing.
  • The numbers tell you which line to do first, second, third etc.

Each picture is called a character
  • The Chinese do not have an alphabet as such- each character represents one syllable of spoken Chinese and may be a word on its own.

Well done Kacia- good idea, using rain water- think we might get some rain later this week!
Picture
Well done Amy D- first poster completed😃!

Monday 1st June

Ulster Teachers' Union
International Relations and Global Solidarity Competition 2020
Today, Year 6 I want us to enter a competition and this is what I need you to do.
* Please creatively express your feelings on the theme of lockdown.
So what could you do [basically anything]- here is a list of possibilities:
  • picture [drawing, painting] of what lockdown means to you.
  • poster [you have had practice] make it clear and interesting.
  • poem [acrostic? L is for, O is for, remember explain, don't just say L is for lockdown.]
  • Non- fiction story- A Day in Lockdown
                     - My Lockdown Experience.
  • Fictitious story-
Picture
Look at the pictures above and a write a short, fictitious story [made up in your imagination] connected to these.
  • Photographs- you take them and compile a montage.
  • Your own idea.
If you submit an entry you will get a prize from me and then your entry will be submitted to the main competition to be judged by members of the Ulster Teachers' Union. You must email your entry to Mrs.Watson:info@dromaraps.org by Monday 8th June at 5pm.
Remember- a high standard of work is what I am looking for and your true feelings about lockdown, please.
                                                     Good luck!

Friday 29th May

Your task is to produce a poster that will encourage your family to save water. You may wish to use ICT.
  Your poster should create:
  • Attention- it should be eye catching. It is important to use colour and pictures/ photos.
  • Interest- It should be interesting to look at and be read quickly.
  • Desire- It should make the people who read it want to help save water.
  • Action- It should encourage your family to make changes and save water.
 Designing your poster
When you design a poster, remember to:
  • include all the information that is needed;
  • use pictures and different colours; and
  • try to arrange things in a bright and eye-catching way.
Remember to include the following information in your poster:
  • why your family should save water;
  • what they can do to save water; and
  • where they can get more information about this.
Photograph your completed poster and send the photo to Mrs Watson, who will email it to me- can't wait to see the finished ones!

Thursday 28th May

Buckets of Fun! [You need two buckets filled with water.]
  • Work with a partner.
  • Choose a flat, straight part of your garden or street to walk on.
  • Mark a start line.
  • Measure approx. 10 metres from the start line and mark a finish line.
  • Decide who will carry the water and who will measure the distance.
  • The water carrier must carry the buckets of water backwards and forwards between the start and finish lines until their arms get tired.
  • The measurer must record the number of times the carrier is able to walk from the start line to the finish line and back again.
  • Swap roles and repeat the activity.
  • Were you able to beat your mum, dad or brother/sister?
  • When finished find a useful way of using the water, don't waste it!

Think how easily you can access water: when you want a drink you just have to turn on the tap. In some parts of the world, people do not have easy access to water and many people live in homes without a water supply. Many people have to walk a long way from their home to fetch the water they need from rivers or wells. [That is why you did the 'Buckets of fun' activity so that you can see what it is like to carry water for a short/ long time and now you can empathise with the children you see on the video.]
Go to www.wateraid.org/uk/learn zone/educational resources
Search for Free School Resources/ Games, Flims and Songs/ Water Aid UK.
* Play some games and watch the film called 'A World of Water!'

Wednesday 27th May

Ways of Saving Water.
Have a discussion with your family- find 3 ways you could all save water in or around your house. Write these in your WAU book and try to put them into practice.
Google- Online Water Conservation Game
https://wateruseitwisely.com>kids
This site will give you ideas of how to conserve [save] water. There are cool games on the 'Kids and Teachers' section like 'Tip Tank.' Learn more on 'Kids Tips' and 'Kids Activities and H20 facts.' Have a look at 'Wayne's Adventures' [You may have realised that this is an American site- find out what a faucet is.]

Remember water is precious- it is everyone's duty to save it. Please, please don't waste it.

Tuesday 26th May

Picture
Have a look at Resource A and link the amount of water used in litres to the plan of your house e.g. in your bathroom you could have a power shower [80 litres], a bath [80 litres], a toilet [9 litres per flush] and a wash basin [4 litres].
If you shower, use the toilet 4 times in a day and use the wash basin for washing hands and cleaning teeth- the total for the bathroom would be 80 litres+ 36 litres+ 4 litres= 120litres used by one person in a day.
Work this out for each room in your house that has a water source. Write it on your plan.

Monday 25th May

Answers for 'The making of a waterfall.'
Picture
This week, Year 6, we are going to look at how much water we use in our own homes and how we can save this precious resource.
Draw a plan view or bird's eye view of the main rooms in your home. Here is an example of a plan view.
Picture
Try to draw the rooms in proportion to their size- use a ruler.
Now try to be a water detective carry out a survey of where water is used in your home. On your plan insert a water tap symbol or the letter W to indicate where water is used.

Friday 22nd May

Google- waterfalls and take a look at the world's most beautiful ones. Write the names of some of them in your WAU book.
Google- how are waterfalls formed. Go to videos and watch some to help you complete the worksheet. Try to draw the picture in your WAU book.
Picture

Thursday 21st May

Go to BBC Bitesize rivers KS2.
Watch the animation that takes place in Sweden and follows the source of the river to its mouth. Listen carefully. Find the meaning of source, meander, gorge and mouth in relation to rivers.
Read- What is a river? How are rivers formed? [From the website]
Watch the next video to see more on rivers.
How much do you remember?
Test your knowledge on rivers.

Wednesday 20th May

Picture
Look at the map of Northern Ireland
  • First of all list all the rivers marked on the map.
  • List all the loughs.
  • Find out where the River Lagan starts. [You may be surprised]
  • Find out what the longest river in Northern Ireland is.
  • Find out what the deepest lough in Northern Ireland is.
  • Which ocean would you be paddling or swimming in if you were staying in Portstewart?
  • Which sea would you be paddling or swimming in if you were staying in Newcastle?
  • If you went on holiday to Enniskilllen which lough could you banana boat on?

Tuesday 19th May

Year 6, today you can choose your activity. Either look at the photos below and make the water cycle or draw your own picture of 'The Water Cycle'. Don't forget labels- a title, evaporation, condensation, precipitation and any others you feel are needed. There are lots and lots of examples on the internet. The main thing is you understand what your picture is telling you.

If you choose to make your own water cycle please email me a photo via Mrs Watson. Many thanks, miss you lots, Mrs Milligan.

Monday 18th May

I hope you all got the hidden message- 'use water wisely.'
This week we are going to study 'The Water Cycle' and geography connected to water.
Google 'The Water Cycle.' You will find lots of information. I particularly like- The Water Cycle/ Educational Video for kids [Happy Learning], BBC Bitesize and 'The Water Cycle Song.' Try to watch some of these videos- if you want to sing and dance watch 'Water Cycle- Blazer Fresh/ Science Video/ GoNoodle.'
Find out the meanings of evaporation, condensation and precipitation- write them in your WAU book or home learning book.

*Remember the water cycle is the movement of water from the land to the sea to the air and back again.

Hello pupils, parents and friends- you are all very welcome to the Year 6 class page. I am pleased to say that everyone has settled very well and I would like to thank the parents for their support in backing books, returning forms and attending meetings, if asked.

This year, as well as all the literacy and numeracy we need to cover, we will be studying 'The Human Body,''The Egyptians,''Flight and Transport,''St Patrick/ Irish Myths and Legends,' and mini topics of 'China' and 'Water'. Therefore, we shall be very busy - I have organised trips already and we shall also have visitors to the classroom who can expertly pass on their knowledge about various topics. Our first visitor will be Nurse Brendan Bradley who is a former parent. He will be telling the children about his job and also teaching 'CPR' techniques and use of the epipen, as we do have a child with a severe nut allergy.

I would also like to take this opportunity to encourage Year 6 parents to download the Year 6 curriculum information which you can click on shortly at the top of the page. This will give you an insight into what your children are being taught this year. Your child and I need your full support to help them fulfil their potential in school this year. Let's have a great one!
October
During reading week the Year 6 got the chance to read to the Year 2 class.
Year 6 have had a busy October. On Friday 4th October we had a picture taken to say 'Thank-you' to the council for our new footpath.
Picture
We also had the council out again on Friday 18th October to launch all the new activities they have created around the Lagan Walk Way.
We also have been working very hard, revising for tests and completing tests. On 23rd October Nurse Brendan Bradley visited the class in connection with our 'Human Body' topic. He was fantastic as usual, telling the children important facts about bones, muscles and organs. He showed us how to listen through a stethoscope to our heartbeat, he took everyone's temperature and showed us how to take blood pressure. He also showed us how to use the epipen and the signs to look out for if someone needs this medication. Brendan then showed the children how to administer CPR and put someone in the recovery position. We had great fun practising this! I would like to thank Brendan for giving up his time to talk to us, especially as he had just come off nightshift. A great experience for the children, as usual!
The 24th October brought 'Snow White' the panto presented by 'M and M' productions to school. The children thoroughly enjoyed it as did the dancing staff- Mrs. Irvine and Jennifer!
On the last day before half term there was great excitement for the 'Halloween Hamper' draw [thanks to all those parents who contributed]. You can see the winners below.
November
During November Year 6 have been working hard on their Egyptian topic in preparation for their museum visit on 10th December. I think their 'Egyptian Death Masks' look particularly effective.
December
Everyone had fun at the craft fair on 5th December. Year 6's definitely shopped until they dropped!
Tuesday 10th December
At the Ulster Museum Mrs. Baird welcomed our class and explained they had a special day to look forward to. The children started with geography and where Egypt could be found on the world map. Mrs Baird informed the children of the benefits of 'The Nile.' She also told us how 180 years ago Thomas Gregg donated 'Takabuti' [the mummy] to the museum after buying her as a souvenir on his travels in Egypt!
The children listened intently to all they were told and answered all of Mrs Baird's questions correctly- she was very impressed. The children got to look at and handle artefacts, some of which were dated as being 2000 years old.
It was a very informative visit which the children thoroughly enjoyed. The history room was also a hit!
On 11th December
Year 6 had their first shared education day of this school year with St.Michael's Primary. We had great fun with IZAK 9, our Christmas wordsearch and a general knowledge table quiz. Congratulations to the girl's team of Elif, Jasmine, Ella-Rose and Robyn who won by half a point!
The last week of term was very busy for Year 6. We had a very successful open night for prospective Year 1 parents and children on Tuesday 17th December. Thanks to all the children who took part whether it was by singing, playing an instrument or entertaining us with gymnastics.
Wednesday 18th was our special 80th Birthday Celebration for Dromara PS- what a day! The theme was 80's and I must say the children went to town on dressing up- they looked superb and we had great fun, lovely cake and special 80th Anniversary mugs.
On Thursday 19th Year 6 had swimming as usual but after we visited McDonalds for lunch. I must say I was very proud of my Year 6 children and our school. The staff in McDonalds told me that they love to see our school coming because the children are the best behaved, most well mannered, easiest children to deal with. Everything went to plan with the help of Jackson's mum and Alistair, the bus driver- thank-you!
The last day, the 20th was party day and we had a great time- plenty of music, food, singing and dancing- great fun!
I would like to thank all the parents and children who gave me such lovely Christmas gifts- they were very much appreciated! I would also like to wish all of Year 6 and their parents a very happy and healthy 2020.
Looking forward to term 2 to finish 'The Egyptians', start 'Flight/ Transport' and 'Irish Myths and Legends'.

January 2020

Year 6 are having a very busy month. On 13th January we had the second 'Shared Education' day with St.Michael's  PS. We continued our work with Izak 9 and worked on 'Elimination Strategies.'
As well as revising for tests- we had our test week during the week beginning 20th January. The children all worked very hard.
During this week (Wednesday 22nd) we also had a visit from David Palmer who told us about a holiday he had had in Egypt. It was very interesting and with David dressed as if he had just got off his camel, the children listened very well to all his stories and his powerpoint commentary.
On the 28th January Year 6 visited the Bible Exhibition in Growell Gospel Hall. It was a bright, informative and educational exhibition which the children got a lot from. This could be seen in the competitive quiz, boys against girls, at the end of the session. We were indeed very well looked after with refreshments and goody bags. Thanks to all the helpers from Growell for the invitation.
Year six using the 'gym time' equipment.'Travelling and balance' is the theme. This equipment was bought with money raised by the PTA.
February 2020
On the 3rd February we had day 3 of shared education with St. Michael's Primary School. It was very much a girls v boys day [as you can see from the photos]. Lots of competition and working together on maths and general knowledge!
Tuesday 11th February brought 'Safer Internet' day. The children have been completing posters for Mr.Bovis' competition. Some excellent advice on these- I shall display them in the classroom when the judging is complete. We had a frank discussion about the dangers of the internet and the children had comprehension to complete at home and hopefully discuss with their parents.
On the 14th of February we had our annual 'Number Day' charity event for NSPCC. As usual this was great fun. All classes took part including pre-school. Year 5 and 6 came together for 'Who Wants To Be A Mathionaire?' The winners were 'The Fearless 4'- Paige, Kacia, Reid and Elijah. However, it was very close and came down to a tie- break question.
Year 6 also included physical activity with maths. A lot of counting went on in their PE session when they had to count how many they had completed- bouncing balls, sit-ups, step-ups, bench presses and forward rolls team event. The overall champion was Aaron Jones- well done!
26th February
As part of our 'Flight' topic Year6 made paper planes and then we had a competition to see whose plane would fly the furthest indoors. The 'Grand Final' was between Charlie, Paige and Taylor. The eventual winner was Taylor with a very aerodynamic plane.
Tuesday 3rd March
Year 6 had a visit from former parent and pilot- Rich Black. As usual Rich has given up his time to inform us about all the workings of an airport and all the jobs a pilot does before, during and after a flight. As usual the children found his powerpoint very interesting and asked lots of intelligent questions and gave lots of supper answers.
                                               Thanks again, Rich!

World Book Day- No dressing up this year but Year 6 really enjoyed reading to Year 2. [I think the feeling was mutual!]
Monday 23rd March- Home working
Hi Year 6- I'm missing and thinking of you all. Hope you have started your work pack and have organised a time- table for yourselves. Remember some literacy and numeracy every school day. We were meant to start an 'Irish Myths and Legends' topic. You can start this by going to the website- https://www.toptenz.net - Top 10 Irish Myths and Legends.
I would like you to draw a picture of each one and write 3 facts also- you can do this in your WAU book or your home working book. Have fun!
Tuesday 24th March- Home working

Take a look at this beautiful picture. It is taken from 'The Children of Lir' by Sheila MacGill- Callahan and pictures by Gennady Spirin.

Those of you who love to draw could try to copy it. All of Year 6 should try to find out about this story. Read it on https://www.irishcentral.com.

In your home working book write three things you liked about the story and three things you didn't like. Remember full sentences, punctuate and use a dictionary to help spelling.

I hope to give you all a call next week to see how you are getting on. Speak soon- looking forward to hearing your wee voices, missing you lots.

This work I set on the website is additional to the work I have set in your packs. It is mostly connected to your current topic. It is usually cross- curricular and it is work we would be completing in class either in school or for homework. Please aim to complete it on the day on which it is set.
Take a look at the 'Pronunciation Guide and Glossary.' Read through and practise pronunciation. Find the name that means 'Hound of Ulster.'

Dear Parents,
As I mentioned at the start of this learning process, it is a good idea to draw up a time- table that suits both you and your child. I would suggest you start with spellings and mental maths. Then move onto literacy and numeracy. AQE people need to factor in test preparation also. I would recommend that this all takes place in the morning before lunch. However, some days this may not suit. I would leave the afternoons for reading and 'World Around Us' activities that I set on this class page. Also there are sheets about Tom Barnardo in your second learning pack which could be used.
It is totally up to you and your child the order in which tasks are completed, but they need to be completed. Keep working hard! [Remember children need play and exercise also.]
                                                                         Best wishes, Mrs Milligan.

Probability

Helpful hints for parents
In the first learning pack the children were asked to complete Page 66  in the 'Maths on Target Book.' If your child is in 'Brown' or 'Green' tables group they were expected to complete Sections A, B & C or A and B respectively. Here are the answers for sections B and C on Page 67 starting at B number 11. The reason there are no answers for section A& B 1-10 is that there could be 2 or 3 different answers for the statements according to your circumstances. When we completed probability in class the children were very aware of this.
If your child is having trouble with probability the YouTube video- 'Maths Antics- Basic Probability' should help.

Star Wars fans may or may not know Monday 4th May is "Star Wars" Day. Fans of the science fiction movies greet one another with the catchphrase, " May the fourth be with you."
