Monday 22nd February 2021

Good Morning Parents and Guardians!

I trust that everyone has had a peaceful half term break, away from the stress of home learning!  PLEASE COLLECT A NEW LEARNING PACK FROM SCHOOL THIS MORNING.  See the above note regarding times of the collection of new learning packs.  Please return all completed work along with the Collins workbooks.  I have explained to the pupils that there are a few topic worksheets (Romans and Celts/Celtic warriors/Queen Boudicca) that have not been completed yet.  PLEASE DETACH THESE AND KEEP THEM as we shall be using them this week.

I have decided to utilise some new online software that I hope makes it easier for your child to learn at home.  All teaching instructions and links are still through the Purple Mash blog posts but instead of reading through a lot of text based instruction, I have created short video clips using LOOM software.  I hope that you will agree that there are many benefits to this approach but perhaps the greatest advantage is that my teaching is more explicit and it is more accessible for struggling readers in the class, therefore encouraging them to be more independent.  Please encourage your child to leave a comment indicating their experience of using the LOOM videos today as it will inform future planning with this format.

Finally, I did not finish the latest round of telephone calls on Friday 12th February so I am aiming to complete these TODAY.  I shall be ringing between 1pm and 4pm.  Please listen out and answer a withheld number as I would really like to have a brief chat with your child, if possible.

1) Spellings ( 'u' sound) and daily tables (dividing by 7/ dividng by 3 - see PM).
2) Mental Maths: TopMarks Hit the Button

6) Literacy: WALT Use prediction skills to understand a story. This is a comprehension activity consisting of the first two                                           pages in the Literacy booklet.
7) Silent Reading 20 minutes of own material.  I have provided two school reading books in your child's pack today.                                           These should be for reading in their own time, in addition to the suggested period of silent reading each                                 day.  Aim to finish one book per week.
8) WAU: Discover more about the Roman Invasion of Britain. Finishing worksheets from the old WAU booklet (Romans                       vs  Celts and Celtic Warrior)

As always, any assistance with marking would be very much appreciated.  Answers are provided below, along with a weekly overview of our learning.

Tuesday 19th January 2021

Good morning, Parents and Guardians.
Thank you so much for your continued support in helping your child to continue learning at home.  As a parent of young children myself, I realise that this is not easy!  Thank you for continuing to submit or email photos of completed work.  This can be very useful so that your child can gain immediate feedback but I'd like to reassure you that this is not expected for every piece of work.  Perhaps only one indicated item per day, if possible.  All completed work should be filed and returned to school at the next provided opportunity so that I can thoroughly assess your child's activity.

I plan to conduct phonecalls this week to give pupils an opportunity to talk to me if they wish.  Please answer your phone if a 'withheld' number appears.  I'm looking forward to having a brief chat with anyone who is available and willing!

Numeracy and Literacy answers are provided below.

Today's learning:
Spellings and tables - the 'l' sound recorded as 'le'.  See the Purple Mash Spelling blog post. Learn dividing  by 3 facts out of order . Please emphasise the correlation with x3 tables already learned.
Mental Maths - Fraction Wall 2Do on Purple Mash.  Choose Challenge A.

Phonics Challenge: This is a 'Countdown' type of activity that we would occasionally complete in class.  Pupils could post their answer in reply to the Purple Mash post.
Literacy: WALT: Understand Report Writing.  3 sides of Fairtrade comprehension activity.   It is the next literacy task in your yellow pack.  Your child may need some support reading this.  Please encourage them to use the glossary on the sheet for unknown words.  If marking, please refer to the photo that has the same number of stars in the bottom left corner as is on your child's sheet. You can click on each image to enlarge it.
Silent Reading - at least 15-20 mins.
I have discovered two potential sources of free online digital storybooks but they may require subscription.  If interested, please follow the links to investigate more:

home.oxfordowl.co.uk/reading/free-ebooks/

The Oxford Owl website provides a selection of free digital books to download, some of which belong to our school reading scheme, but I understand that there is a lot of demand and there may be a wait for access.

library.thenational.academy/spend-time-with-tracy-beaker-and-jacqueline-wilson/
Oak National Academy provides an author focus per week and a free digital read of one of their books on the website.  This week it's Jacqueline Wilson.  Ideal for girls especially.  Hopefully next week shall be equally appealing for everyone!

UICT: WALT: Communicate Safely Online.
Last week, pupils were asked to write a short article about what makes them happy.  This week, pupils are being asked to type up their work and submit it in C2K Newsdesk.  Step by step instructions are on Purple Mash.

Good morning, Parents and Guardians!
Thank you for the work that was completed or submitted on Friday.  I trust that everybody has been able to collect the new learning packs from school.  A new weekly planner is attached above.  Just to clarify, at the front of the folder is an assortment of paper for recording work on, and a  multiplication tables grid/ 1-100 grid sheet for pupils to use, if necessary, during numeracy activities.  A file divider separates these resources from the numeracy and literacy worksheets for daily activities.  These worksheets are compiled in order starting with the earliest to be used. If there is a problem with any missing material please email the school or ask your child to contact me via the Purple Mash comment function on the blog.  Completed worksheets could then be placed at the back of the folder or in another location, ready to be returned in future.   Many thanks for your help with this.  Each day I shall continue to publish a brief outline for your benefit here, as well as answers to activities.  As Mr Armstrong has already requested, it would be very helpful if you could mark some or all of your child's work before it is returned, if possible.

Today's learning:
Spellings and tables - the 'l' sound this week.  See the Purple Mash Spelling blog post. Learn dividing  by 3 facts. Please emphasise the correlation with x3 tables already learned.
Mental Maths - Hit the Button game on Top Marks website.    Dividing facts
Numeracy: WALT: Use A.M. and P.M. correctly.  If possible, please upload a photo of this work to your child's Purple Mash 'My Work' folder.
Shared Reading: First News newspaper cover
Literacy: WALT: Write Direct Speech correctly.
Silent Reading - at least 15-20 mins.  On Purple Mash I have explained a little about reading material.  We cannot send home reading books as normal and so we would encourage pupils to read owned paper material or seek out child friendly websites for reading material.  A good starting point is perhaps the C2k Newsdesk which the children are already familiar with and can be accessed via MySchool.

Good morning!
Thank you for all of the work and comments that were submitted to Purple Mash (PM)yesterday.  Where possible, it would be useful for me see a photo of your child's work uploaded into the My Work folder of PM.  Thank you to those who are already doing so for at least one activity.  Please encourage your child to check their alerts to see comments that I have left regarding their work or queries.  Please also remind your child to clear their backlog of alerts once they have been seen.   Hopefully they are getting into the way of deleting each alert by pressing the 'x' when read.  Unfortunately there may be a lot of alerts that are not directly relevant to your child because it may be another pupil posting a comment for me.  I am afraid there is no way around this but deleting previous alerts will help keep on top of it.

To keep up the motivation I have started to award 'stickers' for impressive work.  These are found if your child has a golden trophy displayed in the top menu of Purple Mash.

Today's outline of work.  More detail and teaching info found on the PM blog.

More pupils are now starting to reply to the posts on Purple Mash.  Thank you for this.  It is very helpful for me to read their opinions and to see who is actively participating in the lessons.  All of our activities this week involve revision of material previously learned.  This would normally be the case for mid year class tests but of course these shall not be occurring.  Nevertheless it is very beneficial to recap elements of Literacy and Numeracy after the Christmas break.  Please note that I would like the Collins workbooks returned to me on Friday so that I can assess pupil work completed so far.  Spellings and tables should be completed in homework diaries (as usual) and I shall collect those at the end of the lockdown when pupils return to school. You shall be collecting a new work pack on Friday consisting of photocopied material.  The Collins workbooks shall then be used for the second home learning pack in two week's time.
Our outline of activities for the day's learning:
Spellings and tables - continuing the 'r' sound this week.  See the Purple Mash Spelling blog post. Learn dividing  facts. Please emphasise the correlation with x tables already learned.
Mental Maths - Purple Mash 2Do - Recall Game
Numeracy: WALT: Add and subtract using a written method. Activities in Collins workbook.
Shared Reading: Poetry (in PM blog post)
Literacy: WALT: Understand fiction genres. Activity in Collins workbook.
Silent Reading - at least 15 mins

Good morning! Thank you to all of those pupils who completed and submitted activities yesterday.  There were a lot of high scores for the Monster Multiplication - well done boys and girls! They can keep practising that when they have a spare moment and would like to improve.  I apologise for the minor teething problems that some of you may have experienced yesterday on Purple Mash and I trust that all will run smoothly today.  Please ask your child to double click the daily blog post and my instructions will expand fully and more clearly.  Here's an outline of activities, with more detail on the Y5 Purple Mash blog.

Mental Maths - Revise selected times tables please.

Good morning Parents and Pupils of Y5!

I hope that you all had a peaceful Christmas break and I would like you all for your cards and gifts at the end of term.  Your kindness was very much appreciated.  As mentioned earlier in the year, we shall be using the Purple Mash online platform to conduct home-school learning over the current lockdown period.  I intend to use this school webpage for general, daily instructions with more detailed information being found over on the Year 5 blog on Purple Mash.  Our pupils are all familiar with this software from last year and it was used for homework/classwork activities during the last term.  If needed, please find instructions for accessing the blog in the attached Word document.

Over the next two days we'll ease ourselves back into homeschooling before adopting a more formal timetable next week.  Here's the plan of activities for today:

Spellings - see the Spellings blog on Purple Mash.
Mental Maths: Complete the Purple Mash 2Do - Monster Multiplication.  Have five tries and see how many rewards you can get!
Numeracy: We Are Learning To: Understand Place Value.
This is a topic that we already covered in Term 1 but it would be useful to reinforce it at the start of this term.  Complete the following pages in the Collins workbook that you ordered and was sent home last term:
If you have Book 2 please complete p22-23
If you have Book 3 please complete p12-13
If you have Book 4 please complete p16-17
All pupils should complete all 3 challenges in the workbook.  Parents, you can find answers at the back for marking purposes.  It can be very useful for pupils to see how they have performed afterwards.  If you would like me to see the work on the same day, you could take a photo of it and upload it to the 'My Work' folder in the yellow 'Work' tab.  See below.

Literacy: We Are Learning To: Understand different types of fiction.
Book 2 : Reading Fiction p38-39
Book 3 : Fact Retrieval 1 p24-25
Book 4: Fiction Genres 1 p22-23
Please attempt all 3 challenges across the two pages.  There is no need to upload this work.  I shall look at it when you return the books at a later date

Silent Reading: Please encourage your child to read independently for at least 15 minutes each day.  Discuss their reading with them and, if possible, listen to all or selected pages.

PE: The forecast is for snow and, if you have any, get building a snowman! Don't forget to loosen up those arms and legs first with some gentle stretches and arm/leg rotations.  You could post a picture of it on the blog for us all to see! If there's no snow, nevermind! Why don't you do some exercise anyway? You could check out Joe Wicks pupil workouts on Youtube.

Finally, working with children and technology can be challenging! If you experience any kind of technical difficulties, I shall understand.  If you think that I can help, please do get in touch via an email to the school and I shall endeavour to reply as soon as possible between the hours of 9:00am and 3:00pm.  The same goes for any queries at all regarding your child's home learning over the next number of weeks.
