END of YEAR REPORTS
Parents - please collect your child's end of year report on Tuesday 30th June from the school office.
They will be available to collect between 10.00am and 1.00pm.
Please return any school textbooks/reading books when you come to collect the report. It would be appreciated if you could put the books into one of the manilla folders from the pupil packs or a plastic bag with your child's name on it.
We really need to get these books back as there are many hundreds of pounds worth of books, that we can't afford to lose.
Thank you.

* I realise that the weather is now not as good as it has been so don't panic if you haven't had an opportunity to produce a short video of your child having a go at a sports day event. I shall not be producing the class video until the end of the month.*
Tuesday 30th June 2020
Good morning!
Well, this is my last update for Y5 on this, the last day of the school year! The year has gone by so quickly and as I was saying to many of you yesterday, it's a very strange way to end the year. Thank you, parents for all of your support through which has undoubtedly been, and continues to be, a tough time for us all. It has been great having the chance to say goodbye to your child over the phone and maybe answer one or two questions. There are still a few homes that I could not get through to but I shall try again this morning. I have a small number of Sports Day event videos that have been sent and I shall post these on a new Purple Mash blog post today. I am aware that some pupils may not have completed all of the activities and this is not something to worry about but could be a useful part of summer revision in preparation for starting Year 6.
Once again, many thanks and best wishes for a safe and restful summer!

Good morning! Many thanks for the pupil projects that have been completed in Purple Mash. I shall be reviewing these this morning and leaving a comment for those pupils so pelase encourage your child to check back into Purple Mash to see what I thought of their project.
It is not too late to send me a short video clip of your child completing a favourite Sports Day event. If I have enough, I hope to share them on Purple Mash tomorrow.
Unfortunately I could not get speaking to many pupils on Friday when I was contacting homes so I shall try again today. This is just an opportunity to say 'farewell' to Year 5 and your child can ask any questions about what life in Year 6 is usually like.

Good morning! This is the last website update for homeschooling! Today is the last day that work suggestions shall be posted online. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all the parents for their support and cooperation over the last three months. It's been a tough undertaking for many for us! I intend to make phonecalls this morning just to have one last chat with your child to say goodbye at the end of Year 5. I'm sure that amid the delirium of starting summer holidays there may be mixed emotions too, saying goodbye to the familiar and thinking about what lies ahead in Year 6.
So hopefully, a bit more of a relaxed day today:
1) Finishing the Coronavirus project.
2) One last audiobook chapter on Purple Mash.
3) Anything else that needs completed - Road safety and Chester's Challenge booklets. This can also be completed at your leisure over the summer, along with the summer homework that was included in the last pack.
Reports can be collected on Tuesday 30th and this is also an opportunity to return any outstanding class textbooks or reading books. Please read the note posted above. Many thanks!

Good morning! See the above note regarding reports. PLEASE RETURN THE BLUE MATHS TEXTBOOK (TARGET) THAT WAS SENT HOME IN THE FIRST LEARNING PACK. If your child still has a reading diary or any kind of reading book from school or the library van please also return it on Tuesday. Many thanks for your cooperation!
Today's suggested learning:
1) Mental Maths: Your choice of Purple Mash or TopMarks activity.
2) Project work: Keep going with these. Remember to check WILF in the project blog post. Have you included pictures from different sources? It's ok to include personal photos because the project is about your life too! What about COPS? Make sure that it is the very best that you can make it! When your blog is finished there is no need to 'hand' it in. I have access to each account. Save your project with a useful name in the class folder 'BB' and I will find it.
3) A new audiobook chapter on Purple Mash.
4) Finishing off: You have today and tomorrow to finish any outstanding work from your learning packs.
5) Silent Reading 20 mins
6) Youir choice of PDMU/WAU/PE etc from the weekly planner that you haven't completed yet.
7) Enjoy some sunshine!!
Wednesday 24th June 2020
1) Mental Maths: Your choice of Purple Mash or TopMarks
2) Numeracy: Shape and Space: Missing Coordinate Polygon Challenge sheet. A polygon is a fancy name for a 2D shape. Most of the polygons will be familiar to pupils Purple and Green group may need to be aware of the differences between different triangles for example. I shall post more explanation in a new Numeracy blog post.
3) A new audiobook chapter. This week I am sharing chapters from selected popular authors/books that may encourage your child to think more about reading over the summer.
4) Literacy: Please continue with projects.
5) Silent Reading 20 minutes.
6) WAU: Materials: Reversible and irreversible changes. See the new Purple Mash 2Do activity after reading this website and watching the clips.

Tuesday 23rd June 2020
1) Mental Maths: Your choice of activity from Purple Mash or TopMarks.
2) Numeracy: McDonald's Investigation. Normally at this time of year, after the last swimming lesson, Year 5 would be asked to consider their order from a visit to McDonald's. We cannot visit this year but the pupils can still undertake this little activity as it is good practise in using money. Head over to the new post on our Numeracy blog.
3) The World's Worst Children audiobook (Purple Mash)
4) Literacy: Coronavirus project. Some pupils have started putting these together. Well done and keep going! I'll post a comment on your blog when the project is finished.
5) Silent Reading 20 minutes
6) UICT: research information and pictures that you can use in your project blog.

Good morning, everybody! Just one more week (or thereabouts) to go!
1)NO SPELLINGS THIS WEEK
2) Mental Maths - choose your favourite Purple Mash or TopMarks game.
3) Numeracy: Let's become familiar with another currency - Euros and cents. Watch this for an introduction https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VOffWozT4jA
Complete the Euro cents worksheet in your pack using the correct symbol > is greater than and < is less than. Purple and Green groups, for an extra challenge, could 'spend' the coins and find the change from one Euro.
Finish the activity with this game from Top Marks but choose the Euro flag in the bottom right hand corner.
https://www.topmarks.co.uk/money/coins-game
4) A new audio story on Purple Mash.
5) Literacy: Continue your research for your COronavirus project. Start writing or typing it up if you're ready. Finish for Friday if possible. See the Purple Mash insrtuctions on the main class blog.
6) PDMU - Chester's Challenge or Scooter's Road Safety booklet.
Friday 19th June 2020
Only one more week of online learning to go! But first let's look after today:

5) We have finished Danny the Champion of the World so you can catch up with that if you need to. I shall start something else on Monday.
6) Literacy: If you finished your science investigation planning notes yesterday, could you please type it up in a reply to yesterday's Material's post where I showed you what to do. Remember COPS! This would normally be going into your black writing folder so make sure that it is as good a standard as you can make it.
7) Art: Try learning some more drawing techniques along with the author/illustrator Sarah McIntyre

Tuesday 16th June 2020
Good morning everybody! Hopefully everybody has collected their new learning pack. If there are any problems with material that you think is missing, please get in touch via email and we'll fix the problem as soon as we can.
Today's learning:
1) SACAWAC
2) Mental Maths: Continue with another round of Bond Bubbles (see yesterday's link).
3) Numeracy: An introduction to decimal tenths. Please watch this first. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgrTBxKbrgk
Pupils should remember that when we talk about fractions, we always refer to an item such as a pizza or chocolate bar. So one tenth is imagined as a pizza with ten equal slices. The same applies to decimals. It should be stressed that the role of the decimal point is to separate the whole number from the fraction (part left over).
Blue group: Twinkl sheet Fractions: Tenths
Green: sheet ‘70’
Purple group: sheet ‘70’
4) Danny the Champion of the World chapter 20
5) Literacy: Prim -Ed comprehension skills sheet. Fact and Opinion. Pupils have already been introduced to this and today's activity consolidates previous learning:
Chestnuts: Blue-ringed octopus
Maples: Marvellous Magic Safety Machine
Lexia: Showbags
6) Silent Reading 20 minutes at least.
7) UICT: Accessing the C2K Newsdesk for project research. See a new post on the UICT blog.

Today's learning:
1) SACAWAC - high frequency words. The last week of this! Keep going over these because accurate spelling of them will really help to improve the quality of yor writing.
2) Mental Maths: Purple Mash 2Do - Bond Bubbles. Blue group Challenge A, Green group Challenge B, Purple Group Challenge C. A great way to improve number bonds of a given multiple of ten or even hundred (if you get that far!)
3) Numeracy: Biscuit Decoration investigation. See the new post on our Numeracy blog.
4) Danny the Champion of the World chapter 19.
5) Literacy: 'Like What?' similes activity in a new post on the Literacy blog.
6) Silent Reading 20 minutes
7) PE: A virtual Sports Day challenge. What is your best event at Sports Day? Is it running? Three legged race? Sack race? How about egg and spoon? Why don't you practise all of these in whatever space you have and, if possible, film your best event. Send your performance to me via school email and I'll try and put them together in a class video to be posted on Purple Mash at the end of the week.

Friday 12th June 2020
It's Friday! Here are today's suggested activities:
1) Have a go at a spelling test. 15 random words from this week's spellings. These are high frequency words that should be familiar anyway. Let's see how you do.
2) Mental Maths: A Purple Mash 2Do has been set. Have another go at the Dividers test from last week. Can you beat your scores?
3) Numeracy: MEASURES: Volume and Capacity. All groups complete the measuring cylinder sheet in your pack Spend some time thinking about the intervals along each scale and how many ml there are between each 'step'.
4) Danny the Champion of the World chapter 18
5) Literacy: Sentence construction part 2. This time focussing on punctuation. I have set it as a post on the Literacy blog in Purple Mash, along with instructions for each group.
6) Silent Reading 20 mins
7) PDMU: Chester's Challenge booklet. Keep going with it! I'd love to see your finished comic strip!

It's Friday! Even better news, it's a bank holiday on Monday so it will be a longer weekend off school work than normal. If you want to use the extra day to catch up on anything that you have missed, that's fine but there shall be no new activities set for that day. It will be back to the normal schedule on Tuesday. So, today's learning:
1) Parents, please ask your child fifteen of this week's spellings. This can be oral or written.
2) Complete the times tables 2Do on Purple Mash. Blue Group - you get to make your own speed test using x2/5/10.
3) Danny the Champion of the World chapter 5.
4) Numeracy: King Cones investigation sheet. Read the information and colour the ice creams on the reverse to show the different combinations. Try and think of an organised way to do it that can help you check if you've go them at. Then work out the prices. Work these out mentally if you can. If you are finding it tough, show some working out.
5) Literacy: Group comprehension skills: Fact and Opinion sheets. Read though the passage along with the 'Learning About the Skill' sheet. Then the 'Practice' page followed by 'On Your Own'.
6) Silent Reading 20 mins.
7) PE: IFA skills on Youtube. Click here - skills videos
*It would be great to see some photos of pupils learning at home, if possible. What about a snapshot of an enjoyable activity? Is there a favourite part of the day that you can capture on camera and upload to this website? Maybe there's some creative work going on that can inspire others! Send your photos via email to the school and Mrs Watson can upload them.*

Good morning everybody! No formal work set for today as it would normally be a holiday in our school calendar. However, if you wish your child to continue learning, they could ensure that they are caught up with Purple Mash activities and anything that is outstanding from previous learning packs.
I'd like to share a couple of links that may help your child with reading. As personal libraries are being exhausted and public libraries remain closed, it's a good idea to explore the opportunities offered by e-books. I have shared a post on the Shared Reading blog of Purple Mash, encouraging pupils to sign up for LibrariesNI online where they can access potentially hundreds of e-books. Audiobooks are also offered on that site and may help to entertain as well in engage children in books. The other resource is the Oxford Reading Owl website which has made a selection of books available to read online. You may even recognise some of the titles from the scheme that we use in school and this can give you an idea about which books may be suitable for your child.
Encouraging our children to read is vital to their educational achievement. Whether you have a bookworm or a reluctant reader in your household, the important thing is to get them to read something - anything! Books, ebooks, magazines, emagazines, websites, comics, graphic novels - the internet provides all of these and more. Maybe your child could contribute to our Shared Reading blog - I'd love to hear about what we are all reading during Lockdown and I'm sure pupils will too! Have a lovely Bank Holiday weekend!

Literacy: Complete parts 3, 4 and 5 of the 'Make up Your Own' poetry sheet. Remember to keep the rhyming words simple and count the syllables carefully so that you keep the rhythm of the nursery rhyme the same. Your final version can be neatly written and illustrated on a blank sheet, in your book or even typed.
Numeracy: Money. Don't forget ten minutes of mental maths (finding change).
Purple and Green groups continue with calculator work on p68 Q1-6.
Blue group: Pounds to pence side of the sheet from yesterday.
WAU: Introduction to materials: Watch this short video and then complete the 'Solids' sheet. What are the qualities of a solid material?Write down three suggestions from the video in your exercise book. Answer the sheet questions too. If you can, try and investigate solids around your house. Use your hands to find out - not just your eyes!

Today's suggested Literacy activity provides a foundation to tomorrow's work when pupils shall be writing their own versions of popular nursery rhymes. These verses are of course designed for younger children to enjoy but are a suitable way to help older children appreciate work on syllables and rhyming in poetry. So, today please refer to the 'Make up Your Own' sheet in your pack and read the alternative example of Hey Diddle Diddle. Ask your child to find the original online and write it out into their exercise book. Rhyming words should be underlined in pairs. Count the syllables and write the number at the end of each line of the verse. Compare this to the alternative version. Is there the same number of syllables in each line? Now have a go at part 2 on the sheet. Find the original verse of Three Blind Mice. Change it on your sheet but don't forget that it should rhyme like the original. Keep it simple by choosing words that rhyme easily. Parts 3, 4 and 5 to be completed tomorrow.
Numeracy:
Mental Maths this week is using https://natwest.mymoneysense.com/students/students-5-8/the-change-game/ There are two intitial difficulties. Blue group have a go at the easier version. There are levels within each stage so see how far you can get as you practise each day!
Purple & Green groups - Complete Using a Calculator sheet p67. The emphasis is on developing calculator skills as there may be some questions that are tricky to perform on paper. Be careful with the prices and make sure that you enter them into the calculator the same way by changing the pence into pounds first (or the other way round).
Blue group - changing pence to pounds p46 sheet Q1-5. Have a go at Q6 finding change from £1.00 as an extra challenge but this could be tricky as you will have to exchange using a written method.
UICT: See the new 2DO set in Purple Mash. Can you create a staircase pattern using LOGO?

Good morning! The start of another week of homeschooling but the good news is that Friday is a bank holiday and we would normally be off school anyway so it's a shorter week than normal. However, if you wish your child to continue with school work, some pupils still have Purple Mash activities to complete. Please find below a weekly planner that I have attached and may be helpful in providing some notice for the week ahead. This will be supplemented by further explanation of the activities each day on this website or on Purple Mash.

Good morning! It's Friday! Please remind your child about catching up with activities on PM, including the Tables Toon speed test, and also ask them a selection of fifteen spellings that they have been learning or revising this week. Today is usually a more practical day in Year 5 so if pupils are up to date with all of their numeracy and literacy, why don't they spend some extra time on ICT practising their LOGO with a different background in PM? Maybe it's time for a different PE lesson with a different personality on Youtube such as Oti Mabuse (Strictly Come Dancing) who has some great street dance tutorials. Or if you have space outside maybe some fitness training with running, jumping and hopping . Even something as straightforward as throwing and catching different items can be very good for coordination. Thank you to everybody who has completed PM work and managed to upload attachments. Have a lovely weekend and a good break from homeschooling!

Almost the weekend! Today pupils should be revising their weekly spellings (high frequency words). One useful way to do this is to write a sentence for each word, demonstrating not just correct spelling but understanding as well. Please encourage your child to continue practising and improving their speed of recall for the selected tables this week, so that they are ready for the speed test 2Do on PM tomorrow. I shall check scores tomorrow evening. Any grammar or punctuation activities in the packs should be mopped up by the end of this week as well as numeracy tasks. I hope that the introduction of repeated subraction hasn't proved too stressful! Please support your child in developing their understanding of this method of written division. I realise that it is very different from methods that we were taught when at school but it is our school policy and provides a sound understanding for later development of advanced (and faster) calculations.
Any work that is required to be submitted via Purple Mash attachment is best done as a photo rather than a Microsoft Office document. Many thanks for your patience in this as I do appreciate that there can often be technical issues when working with children and technology!

Good morning. Thank you to those pupils who have been uploading completed work onto PM. Please encourage pupils to check back for a comment that I will have written regarding their work. Please continue with the daily Litercy and Numeracy activities in the packs. Another writing/WAU task has been set on the Literacy blog, to be completed by Friday if possible. Pupils have been given instructions to design a persuasive poster about joining the Ancient Roman Army. There are help sheets attached in the blog, along with information about submitting the task, if possible. New home learning packs are being compiled and should be available next week. Details to follow.

Good morning! Thank you for the completed Boudicca comprehension and artwork. This can stil be completed if not finished. Just upload the answers in a post on the History blog on PM and I can then reply and inform your child of how he/she has performed.
There is a new Literacy blog post concerning a piece of writing that is linked with our topic. Please allow your child to read (with help if needed) the attached example of a letter by a Roman soldier. Please complete this task by Friday if possible. I shall approve work as soon as it is posted. Sometimes it can also be helpful for children to read each other's work to help with inspiration. Maybe your child could also leave a positive, constructive comment on a classmate's work.

On another note, I have managed to contact a lot of Year 5 parents and it has been very useful discussing your child's progress at home so far. A voicemail was left for anybody who was unable to answer their phone. I shall be attempting to call parents again at some point in the next few weeks and this shall appear as a withheld number. Please answer if you wish to discuss your child's learning with me for a short time. Please also ensure that any updated numbers are forwarded onto the school via email. Many thanks in anticipation of your cooperation.

Hopefully by the end of this week, pupils shall have completed most, if not all, of the activities in the home learning packs. No need to panic if your child is not in this position. Please keep working your way through whenever you can and keep up with the 2Do activities that I am setting on Purple Mash. I shall be increasingly using this website and Purple Mash to set daily activities throughout May and beyond.
Learning for the week ahead:
1) Ten high frequency words daily (SACAWAC:Mon-Wed for Friday 'test').
2) Continue improving speed and accuracy of times tables using PM 'Table Toons'(there is a new 2Do for Friday).
2) Daily grammar/punctuation booklet.
3) Daily mental maths revision booklet.
4) Your choice of daily paper-based numeracy activity - if you are up to date or even a bit ahead of the game please continue with written division practice (repeated subtraction).
5) Your choice of daily paper- based literacy activity - don't forget to practise joined handwriting. There are two pieces of writing that I would like you to work on: A Roman soldier letter and a Roman Soldier recruitment poster. These shall be set as 2Do tasks with more guidance for pupils in PM. Try and catch up with any remaining grammar or punctuation sheets.
6) UICT - A LOGO 2Do has been set. When complete, your child could explore more LOGO activities on PM.
7) WAU - any remaining worksheets on the Ancient Romans. Use BBC Bitesize for visual resources and more info.
8) Please also encourage your child to share any other activities that they are interested in e.g. music, art, drama, PDMU. I'd love to see photos of any homelearning if possible and these could be shared on this site.
Many thanks for your support and if there is anything else I can do please contact me via the school email address.

Good morning everybody! It's almost the weekend! Today's suggested learning:
1. A Friday 'test' of your high frequency spellings so far this week.
2. Complete the Table Toons 2Do on Purple Mash.
3. Your choice of paper literacy activity.
4. Your choice of paper numeracy activity.
5. WAU: Complete the Boudicca comprehension and artwork on PM.
If you are up to date and need ideas for keeping busy, don't forget the Out of the Ark music resources or get a little head start with using LOGO in Purple Mash Computing. Joe Wicks is still hosting the nation's workouts too!
Have a great day and an even better weekend, staying safe!

Another bright morning and I hope that everybody is doing well. Today, after you have completed spellings, practiced some tables on PurpleMash (PM) and completed your choice of literacy and numeracy, perhaps you could complete some topic work that is in your folder? I have created an activity in a new History blog in PM named 'Boudicca'. Please have a go a the Twinkl comprehension sheet but type your answers in a reply to the Boudicca blog post. Lexia group have a go at only the first 7 questions. You may need some help reading the material on the back of the sheet but that's okay.
This web page on BBC Bitesize has more information and a short animation that may help you for the next activity:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zm62d6f/articles/z9j4kqt
I'd love to see a bit of artwork too! Can you use 2Paint a Picture (ART) to create an illustration of Boudicca based on the information in the comprehension? Upload it separately if you can.
You could spend two days on this activity and I'll check them all on Monday.

Good morning everybody. Hopefully all learning packs have been collected. Just a reminder for those pupils who normally complete LEXIA activities to try your best to complete those at least three times each week. Aim to spend 15-20 minutes each time if you can.
I also wanted to let you know about two useful websites for pupils to use.
The first is EnglishMaven which has a lot of free online literacy activities. The link will take you to the reading comprehension section where pupils can read a passage or poem and then answer multiple choice questions. This can be very good especially for those more capable readers who may be up to date with the paper comprehensions. Perhaps your child could take a screen grab (fn + prt sc buttons) and paste it into Purple Mash to me their score.
The second website is BBC Bitesize which has been overhauled and now has daily lessons covering most areas of the curriculum. Again, this can be used to provide an introduction to any new concepts or may be useful in reinforcing existing knowledge.
At the moment the best way to use these and other sites that I share is to support the lesson activities that are in the packs.
Have a great day!

Good morning! New home learning packs are available to collect today. Please see yesterday's information if you haven't already. Pupils should still be working their way through some of the Literacy and Numeracy in those packs so you may not need to launch into the new folder immediately. Please encourage your child to keep in touch and engage with the learning resources provided via Purple Mash. I shall post activities and resources for them using that platform. This web page shall be used primarily to inform you as parents/guardians. If possible, a suggested daily outline is as follows:
Daily mental maths revision (10 mins)
Daily grammar/punctuation revision (10 mins)
10 High frequency word spellings (Mon-Thurs, revise for a Friday 'test')
One written literacy activity
One written numeracy activity
15 minutes of sustained silent reading
One other activity related to an area of the curriculum e.g. history/geography/music/art etc...
This of course is a suggestion and will have to be tailored to your own individual circumstances as we all try and home-school as best as we can. If possible, it is a good idea to mark your child's work with them so that you can get a good idea of any reinforcement that is needed. Please contact me via the school email if I can be of any assistance.

Good morning everybody! The Easter holidays are over and we would normally be back in school ready for another term's hard work. Unfortunately this is still not possible so another home learning pack has been produced to help your child continue their learning at home. Packs can be collected on Tuesday 21st April from the main entrance porch and will be staggered for each class. If you have children from a younger class, you may pick up Year 5 folders at the same time. Please see other class pages for details. Year 5 (and older sibling) packs can be collected from 11:00AM to 11:15AM. This new pack will contain work for the next few weeks but I expect that there are unfinished activities in the first pack from last month. Please help your child in any way that you can, given the constraints and circumstances that you find yourselves in. If you need to contact me, you may do do via the school email address and Mrs Watson shall forward on any concerns. I shall endeavour to reply as soon as possible. Many thanks for your ongoing support and cooperation in these difficult times!

Hello everybody! Normally it would be the Easter holidays and we'd be taking break from school. Of course this year it's a bit different! It's good for everyone at home to stop the learning for a while (Numeracy and Literacy anyway) and just enjoy the good weather and celebrations of the season. I've shared a blog post about a brilliant, free music resource that you can access online. Out of the Ark is full of feel-good, easy to learn songs and some of them are great for Easter too! Don't forget to share any Easter/homelearning photos with us here at Dromara PS. We'd love to see how you are all doing! Best wishes from Mr Bovis, Donna and Diane.

Happy birthday to one of our class members! Why don't you head over to Purple Mash to see who it is and send them some birthday wishes? There's also a new 2Do to have a go at, involving RE and Literacy. Enjoy your break from school work for a while over Easter and don't eat too much chocolate!

Good afternoon everybody in Year 5! Thank you for keeping in in touch with my updates on our Purple Mash website. Keep sharing your own work and comments there, I am sure that others are enjoying it too. From now on, I shall be using this website more for parents but continuing to use Purple Mash to set activities which can be completed in your own time. Don't forget to keep going with all of the paper activities in your folder that was collected two weeks ago. If possible, you should be completing some Numeracy and Literacy each day and then maybe one other activity such as PE, music, art, ICT. Think about what you would normally do in afternoon class, if it helps. I'll
start giving you more detailed ideas soon.
