Thursday 25th February

Good morning Year 3! I hope that you are all well.

Super instructional writing on Purple Mash yesterday. Was it good fun pretending to be a chef? Your Rice Krispie buns instructions were brilliant. I think I’ll make some at the weekend! I’ve enjoyed seeing the baking photos you’ve sent in for our Home Learning Gallery.

Our focus today:

Numeracy – Number
Squares: Ordinal Number (NHM 3 Activity Book)
Today we are learning about ordinal numbers. That’s words like first, second, third …... Could you say the rest of the ordinal numbers up to twentieth? Here’s an ordinal numbers video and some ordinal numbers information with some activities too.

Picture
Often, we just add ‘th’ to the number e.g. ‘four’ becomes ‘fourth’ but there are some numbers where this isn’t the case. I wonder could you sort the ordinal words (first to twentieth) into the two groups - those where you just add ‘th’ (12 numbers) and those where you don’t (8 numbers).  Some of these words are tricky to spell.
Find today's activity in your booklet and read each ordinal numbers before writing or matching them.
Complete: NHM3 page 23.
If you have extra time, there are some 3-digit numbers activities in your pack to develop your understanding – complete two pages.

Rectangles / Triangles: Subtracting 10 (Addition and Subtraction to 100 booklet)
Today we are focusing on subtracting 10. We completed some activities in December where we used the 100 square to take away 10. We clicked on a number of the hundred square and subtracted ten by moving up one square. Click on 10 more and 10 less to watch a video to help you.  Here’s a game called Ten Hunt. Click on ‘10 less’ to practise taking away 10 using the hundred square. Look at page 18 in your booklet. Use your 100 square to help you subtract 10.
Complete: A & S to 100 page 18.

Circles: Facts for 12 (Addition and Subtraction to 20 booklet)
Today you are developing your understanding of addition and ways to make 12. Use your number line to find out how to make 12. Complete the top half of the page 8.
Complete: Addition and Subtraction to 20 page 8 (Top half)

Complete:  Alphabet activity – Page 9.

Black, Blue and Green Groups: Complete today’s phonics activity ‘Brainstorm’ to practise your spellings.

World Around Us - Food, Glorious Food - Food Diary
All groups: Continue to record the foods you have been eating this week. Points for discussion:
-Which fruits have you eaten?
-Which vegetables have you enjoyed?
-How many different breakfasts have you had this week?

Research:
-Could you find out which foods are grown in Northern Ireland?
-Which foods grow in the summer / winter?
Complete: 'Food Diary’ - A4 page.

Let’s think about the great learning you’ll do today. When you’ve finished today’s activities you should have a better understanding of (depending on your group):
-(Literacy) reading instructions / showing understanding of text / the alphabet / how to spell words containing ‘ay’ or ‘it’ / literacy concepts.

Wednesday 24th February

Good morning boys and girls! Did you enjoy making a restaurant menu yesterday?

This week we are thinking about the food we eat. In your pack you will have noticed a food diary sheet. Could you record the food you eat each day this week? (This is an activity to keep at home and purely for discussion at home. You don’t need to return it to school.) At the end of the week, you can look at your food diary and notice if you’ve eaten fruits and vegetables, had a variety of lunches or look at the different types of dinners you’ve enjoyed.

During this topic we usually try to find food facts to share with each other. If you have time, could you do your own research and share a fact on our Food, Glorious Food blog under the ‘Food Facts’ post. Have fun researching!

World Around Us – Food, Glorious Food
I wonder have you ever seen a piece of food that has been left out for a few days and started to go off. During our Food, Glorious Food topic we would usually complete an investigation to find out what happens to some foods when they are left out for a week. We place an apple (cut in half), a slice of cheese, a piece of bread and a biscuit on a plate a notice the changes that take place. Maybe you could carry out your own investigation at home.

- I was late because I cut my knee.
- You can make a cake if you have flour, eggs, sugar and butter.
- I have a drink when I am thirsty.
- Dad was pleased that I went to play outside.

Click here to watch a video about Subordinating Conjunctions. There's a quiz you can play too.

World Around Us – Food, Glorious Food – Fruit Collage
This week we will focus on fruit. I’m always delighted to see lots of Year 3s enjoying fruit for their break at school.

Tomorrow you’re going to write an imaginative adventure about a piece of fruit. Your piece of fruit can go anywhere you’d like it to go, can travel in a way that you choose and it’s up to you to write about what it gets up to!

Today you’re going to make a fruit collage. Get the piece of blue card from your folder, choose a fruit and draw the outline of the fruit on the piece of card. Remember to just choose one fruit. Now find old Christmas cards, items from the recycling bag or anything that you don’t need anymore. Look out for the colour of your fruit. Now rip small piece of the card or paper that are the colour of your fruit and stick them on to your fruit. When you have completed your art activity you should have a piece of fruit that is ready to go on an adventure!

When you’ve finished today’s activities you should have a better understanding of coordinating conjunctions/phonics/digital time/quarter past/quarter to/days of the week/mental maths and literacy concepts (depending on your group).

I hope you have a great day.

Thursday 21st January

Good morning Year 3. I have enjoyed being able to talk to you on the phone this week. It’s been great to hear about the fun you have when you’ve completed your home learning. You can share those activities on our blog, if you can. Thank you to Bobby, Charlie, Harley, James, James, Jessica, Susannah and William for posting about their favourite activities. Super!
Parents, thank you so much for engaging so well with learning at home. Thank you for your help with marking. I really appreciate it, but it is also better for your child(ren) to have their work marked shortly after they have completed tasks. This gives pupils immediate feedback. They will either know that they have a good understanding of a task or that they need to revisit any answers that are wrong. Also, a great way to motivate pupils to make progress with their learning.
Our focus today:
Numeracy – Number
Squares: Numbers to 1000: Halfway Between (NHM 3 Activity Book)
Find the number halfway between the numbers given. Use the number line to begin with, if you need to.
Rectangles / Triangles: Addition (Addition and Subtraction to 100 booklet)
Today you are adding numbers together to find a total. Use the numbers at the top of the page (in the rectangles) to make the numbers in the circles. I’ve uploaded a video onto Purple Mash  to help you.
Circles: Word Problems (Food Picture Addition booklet)
Today you are drawing pictures to represent word problems and adding them together. What does the word 'altogether' mean? Discuss this with a grown up.
Complete: Word Problems (1 page).

All groups:
Practise this week’s spellings for your test tomorrow.

Literacy - Reading
Take some time to read by yourself or with a grown up each day.

Art – Food, Glorious Food
All groups:
Ask someone in your family about their favourite food / dish or meal. Could you draw this on the paper plate in your pack? Try to add as much details as you can. If you have time, you could design the rim of the plate too!

It’s important to think about the great learning you are doing at home. When you’ve finished today’s activities you should have a better understanding of (depending on your group):
-(Literacy) reading a text for meaning / answering comprehension questions to show understanding / the alphabet / how to spell words containing ‘ee’ or ‘id’ / literacy concepts.
-(Numeracy) halfway between / making totals within 100 / doubles and near doubles within 20 / number facts / mental maths.

Have a great day, Year 3!

Monday 18th January
Good morning Year 3. I hope that you had an enjoyable weekend.

Year 3,
A huge well done to you all! I am delighted with how you have completed tasks on Purple Mash and posted on our blog. I am looking forward to seeing the work returned on Friday. I’m so proud of you and how you are continuing your learning at home. Keep it up!

Parents,
Thank you so much for all you are doing to help the children to progress with their learning. I am absolutely delighted with the engagement and appreciate that it’s not easy, so well done!
Thank you to everyone who collected their new pack and returned the completed workbooks or booklets.

Daily Check List –
- Check the Year 3 Class Page – for information about each day’s tasks.
- Read every day – daily reading is so important. (Record books in ‘My Reading’ book.)
- Numeracy and Literacy tasks – See timetable from pack.
- Spellings and number facts – See A4 or A5 spelling booklet with word sort and / or Look, Cover etc. (Record these daily in Homework Diary.)
- Mental Maths and Literacy Practice (Starting today) – See the respective booklets.
- Purple Mash – Activities, videos, blogs, educational games.

Items underlined are to be returned for marking, either when we return to school, when returning a pack (I’ll let you know) or through Purple Mash. I would really appreciate your help with the marking and will provide answers when I can. Pupils will benefit from their work being marked when they’ve completed it rather than getting the feedback after it’s been returned to school. It’s also a great motivation too.

By recording spellings and number facts in your Homework Diary, as usual, you’ll have an up to date record of spellings and number facts (Scroll further down this page to Monday’s information if you need another look at them).

Please remember to click ‘Hand In’ when you have completed tasks.

Road Safety Calendar
When we are in school we look at our Road Safety Calendar each week. This week's calendar page is all about snow!

You could read the 'Discussion Time' with someone in your family.

The discussion section suggests thinking about:
- how snow and icy conditions make it difficult to stay on your feet.
- how snow and ice can make footpaths and roads dangerous.

Remember to:
- take care
- walk slowly
- hold hands with a parent, if possible, when on or near a road.

Great reminders for us all, Year 3.

World Around Us - Year 3 Topic – Food, Glorious Food
Our new topic for this term is ‘Food, Glorious Food.
During this topic we usually plan to:
  • discuss foods we like and dislike.
  • sort foods into two groups – healthy and unhealthy.
  • use the terms ‘starter’, ‘main course’ and ‘dessert’ and the foods that would be in each category.
  • discuss and taste foods from around the world. (when we’re back in school)
  • find out about the foods we eat and how they are grown.
  • complete some food investigations. (when we’re back in school)
  • learn about plants and meat available locally.
  • learn about the nutrients found in foods. (when we’re back in school)
  • find out about changes in shopping and cooking from 1900’s to today. (when we’re back in school)
We’ll cover what we can through home learning but we’ll wait until we return to school to complete the topic. We hope to have a food tasting of food from around the world when we get back to school.

Today discuss foods that you like and dislike with a grown up or with your family. Maybe think about your three favourite foods and ask those in your house what their favourites would be. You could let us know which foods you chose on the Year 3 blog.

I hope that you have a lovely day. I wonder which foods you chose.
Mrs Irvine

Monday 11th January
Hello everyone! I hope that you enjoyed your weekend.
This week we will continue to use our current materials. Our first ‘Home Learning’ pack will be available for collection on Friday 15th January 10:15 – 11:00. Please return the children’s Collins English and Maths Workbooks so that I can see how the children are getting on. Those who had the ‘Number Names to 10’ booklet should return it.

Our jokes blog on Purple Mash is up and running. Thanks to Ava, Harley, James, Jessica, Jessica, Kurtis and Lucas for getting it started with some great jokes.

Parents, thank you for all that you are doing to help your children move forward with their learning. I know that these are challenging times (I’m a parent too!) but I know that we all want the children to make progress. Remember that not all the information below will apply to your child so please don’t be daunted. Watch out for information that relates to your child's group. My posts will become briefer once we’re into the way of home learning!

You’ve got this! Together we can make learning continue for your child. Please find a way that works for you and your family. Below is the information for today's activities.
Take care,
Mrs Irvine

Remember ….

Our focus today:
Literacy - Phonics

I've uploaded viseos onto Purple Mash to help the pupils with their phonics. It would be helpful if the children could see the picture of their sheet below while listening to the video. Some groups have two videos to watch as a longer video was too long to upload!
Black, Blue and Green Groups
On Mondays we focus on our new sound for the week.  We are beginning to learn that sounds can be represented (written) in different ways.
Our sound for this week is 'oa' and our spellings will all contain the ‘oa’ sound except for the high frequency words. The ‘oa’ sound is how we say the letter name ‘o’, for example, old, coach. 'oa' can be written 'oa, ow, o, o_e'. (‘o_e’ just means that there is a letter between the o and e, as in bone.) We don't cover all the representations for these types of sounds in Year 3. You'll develop this knowledge next year in Year 4.
(Your new Phonics Booklet and Phonics(Sounds) booklet will be in your folders on Friday but for now use a piece of paper to complete the tasks below.)

Read the scaffolded text and list the words that have the ‘oa’ sound in the text. Remember to only write down words where you can hear the ‘oa’ sound. Everyone ‘o’ doesn’t make the ‘oa’ sound! Only record those with the four representations we do in Year 3. I’ll do the first line with you….
Joe (‘oe’ is another way of writing the ‘oa’ sound and you’ll learn more about this in Year 4.)
old
goat
Now make 4 columns with the headings oa, ow, o, o_e (as in the picture).
Can you sort the words at the bottom of the page into columns under these headings? This is tricky when we aren’t in the classroom to work through this together. I’ll post a picture of the answers below! Now practise your spellings using ‘Look, Say, Cover, Write and Check’.

Here are a couple of videos / games that may be helpful:
BBC Bitesize 'oa' clip and game.

Red Group
Today we're continuing to work on words where the middle sound is 'o' e.g. hop, pop, log, dot. You’ve worked really well on these words and so were going to revise this sound this week before moving on.

Here is a video that may be helpful.
Alphablocks 'o' clip

Can you find a piece of paper and sort the words? Practise your spellings, as you usually do, using ‘Look, Say, Cover, Write and Check’.

Purple Mash - Literacy
All Groups

Today the activity is a phonics game linked to sounds your group is familiar with.
Great to see lots of pupils completing the Purple Mash art activity on Friday. Great fireworks pictures Harley, Jessica, Susannah, Reuben, Lucas, James, Charlie, Jessica, Kurtis, James and Ava.

Suggested Daily Timetable
A daily routine is helpful when home learning. The pupils are familiar with a daily structure in school. A daily timetable can be helpful so that everyone knows the expectations for the day and helps to make learning time productive. I'll post suggested timetable tomorrow which you can use or adapt. I hope that it will be helpful.

I'll put posts on our Year 3 blog over the next few weeks where the children can share how they are helping around the house, being creative, what they are doing for exercise etc so that they can encourage each other. We're working together to help each other.

I hope you have a great day. Get your work done, do your best and get outside if you can!

Friday 8th January
Good morning everyone! I hope that you are all well and getting into the way of home learning.

I have uploaded a video onto Purple Mash which you should be able to watch by logging in and clicking on ‘Alerts’. (There is an 'Upload Work' button under the video. You don't need to upload anything when you've watched the video.) We’ve been using Purple Mash this year and it’s been great to know that you all have access. This will be one of the main ways we’ll keep in touch. Send an email to our school if you have any issues with accessing Purple Mash. Our first blog gives pupils the opportunity to share their jokes. Thanks to Harley who has already posted a joke on the blog for us all to enjoy. Super!

Thursday 7th January
Hello Year 3! Happy New Year! I hope that you have had a lovely Christmas with your family. Maeve and I worked in our classroom yesterday but we missed you all. Normally on our first day back to school after Christmas we'd enjoy hearing about all the fun you'd had over the Christmas holiday. Not today! For now we'll be learning from home but we'll be looking forward to seeing you all back in our classroom when schools are able to return to face to face teaching.

In the meantime, I will post activities here on our class page, be putting together packs for you and keeping in touch by phone and online (Purple Mash). Please do your best when completing tasks and show your family the great work that you can do. I hope that your parents will be able to tell me that you've worked really well on your activities. Always try your best.

We have a Year 3 Purple Mash blog which you can access by clicking on the 'Sharing' tab in Purple Mash and then clicking on 'Shared Blogs'. Do you have a fun joke to share with our class?

Parents, we know that these are challenging times. Please try to keep learning as positive as possible and early in the day when the children are usually more able to focus (if you can). Make the most of days of good weather to get outside too.

Literacy - Literacy Revision
Today we will revise concepts covered to date using the packs sent home during the last term. Some packs contained Collins workbooks and some contained other differentiated workbooks. Note the title of the workbooks contained in your child's pack (Collins Year 1,2 or 3 etc) in order to complete the correct tasks. (Remember that Year 2 is the equivalent of Year 3/P3 in Northern Ireland). The answers for the Collins Workbooks are found at the back of the book. Please mark completed tasks to gauge understanding.

New Year Task
At the beginning of a new year we often think about what we might like to achieve during the new year. Think of three dreams or wishes for 2021. Design your own page to record your thoughts or you could use this one if you are able to save and print it.

I hope you have a great day learning at home and see you back here tomorrow!

Take care,
Mrs Irvine

Christmas Crafts
We’ve been enjoying time to be creative this week. The children have made Christmas cards, snowmen, Santas and paper chains so far.
Our snowmen allowed us to incorporate STEM into our art lesson. The snowmen’s balloon hats propelled the snowballs (cotton wool balls) and gave us the opportunity to discuss the forces involved! Great excitement in Year 3!
Friday Friday 2
Our second Festive Friday was all about craft for Years 1, 2 and 3. We had a great time making our Christmas decorations with Christmas hats on and Christmas tunes playing. It was a challenging task but was wonderful to see the pupils persevere to complete their craft.
Activity Based Learning
This week we’ve been hard at work, learning through our play. Here we are in the Toy Shop, constructing with Octons, painting creative pictures, playing a literacy game and creating vehicles using Purple Mash.
Independent Writing
We’ve been working on our story writing skills in Year 3 while learning about our topic of ‘Jobs and Transport’. The children are writing and spellings with more independence and are developing good strategies. We use our whiteboards to try to spell words by ourselves.
Our Classroom
We love to display our work around the classroom and in the Resource Area to share it with our friends.
Numeracy - Handling Data
We’ve been learning about how to collect data and create graphs. Great work, Year 3.
Festive Friday 1
It’s starting to feel a lot like Christmas in school. Lots of Christmas trees and decorations up in the classrooms.
Today we enjoyed our first Festive Friday. The pupils went down to the hall where there were lots of games set up for them to enjoy with their friends. Here are some photographs of the children having fun!
November 2020
Welcome back after our half term break. The pupils are refreshed and ready for learning.
During this half term our topic is ‘Jobs and Transport’. Unfortunately we won’t be able to welcome visitors into school this year but we plan to take oppirtunities to learn about careers in different ways.
Activity Based Learning sessions are valuable for developing our numeracy, literacy and topic learning. Here we are in action.....
Hallowe’en
Thank you to everyone who supported our Hallowe’en hampers fundraiser. Here are the happy winners! Well done!

Practical Numeracy
This week we have been working on adding and subtracting strategies using counters. We were challenging our partners to work out how many counters we were hiding under our hands. For example, ‘I have 12 red counters. I’ve added some blue counters and now I have 20 counters. How many blue counters did I add?
Great mental maths strategies, Year 3!
Sponsored Walk
We completed our Sponsored Walk on Friday morning. What a great day for being outside and enjoying the sunny weather!
Picture
Activity Based Learning
We’ve been learning about literacy and our ‘Whatever the Weather’ topic through our play. Here are some photos of our class making weather graphs using Purple Mash, developing understanding of rhyme through a phonics game, making clothes for a season of choice using play dough, designing a waterproof coat using paper and sweet wrappers and being creative with colour to decorate rain men.
The Alphabet
This month we’ve been working on our knowledge and understanding of the alphabet sequence. Great progress being made. Well done everyone!
Picture
Picture
Weather Symbol Collages
The pupils used their knowledge of weather symbols to create some art work today. Here they are in action!
Whatever the Weather
The pupils are engaging well with our first topic. So far we’ve been learning about the various types of weather, how weather symbols are used and where we can view weather forecasts. It’s been wonderful to have a range of weather types already this month, especially the sunny days!!

We began our topic by thinking about ‘what we already know’ and then ‘what we want to find out’. One way of developing our knowledge was through the research homework (Finding out homework). Pupils were able to share their research clearly and confidently with the rest of the class. We learned so much about weather and the children shared lots of great weather facts. Well done Year 3!
Picture
September 2020
It’s great to be back in the classroom and settled into our new school year.
Having thought about what we missed about school and how each pupil is special, we completed some activities to share our thoughts with one another.
September 2020
During our Activity Based Learning sessions we will be completing activities to further our understanding of our ‘Whatever the Weather’ topic and develop Numeracy skills. Here are some photos of Year 3 today!
August 2020
Welcome to Year 3. It has been wonderful to see all the children during our first week back to school.
We’ve been settling back into school with some fun activities which focus on what we enjoy about school. Great to see the children's smiles!
Here is a photo of the children in their new classroom.
