Happy New Year!
The children are back and have begun their third Year 3 topic! Our topic for the next six weeks is 'Food, Glorious Food'. It's a favourite as there are lots of opportunities to discuss foods we enjoy eating, investigating food changes and trying foods from around the world.

We made Rice Krispie buns to help us to understand how food can change when it is heated or allowed to cool. We also used this task as an opportunity to develop our understanding of sequencing and how a recipe is a list of instructions in a particular order.
We are investigating food changes this week and discussing why these changes happen and what we can learn from our investigation.
Food Investigation 1
We are investigating the changes in different foods when they are left uncovered for a week.
Food Investigation 2
We are investigating the changes observed in slices of bread when covered in different materials.

The Waste Education Bus visited our school to help us to understand the importance of recycling. We recycle much of our rubbish in school and at home. Keep it up!
Abbie's Auntie is a Paramedic and works for the NI Ambulance Service. The Year 3 pupils were really looking forward to her visit and were able to prepare super questions to ask her about her job. We were very interested to see inside the ambulance and were reminded of how important it is to call for an ambulance if it is an emergency.
We were very excited to meet Marcell Coetzee and ask him about his job as an Ulster Rugby player. The pupils prepared questions to learn about Marcell's career. Year 3 were able to learn about how he became a rugby player and what he enjoys about playing the sport professionally.
As part of our Jobs and Transport topic, we completed a traffic survey to observe the number of vehicles that pass our school. We recorded the number of cars, vans, lorries, bicycles, motorbikes and buses that drove past during the ten minutes before our lunch break. Here are some photographs of us in action!
Another exciting day in Year 3. Today we switched on our Christmas lights!
The children had great fun decorating the tree when they finished their work. They did a great job! The Tidy Helpers for this week had the very special task of turning on the lights! Well done girls! Exciting month ahead!

A few photographs from around our classroom ....
We were very excited to have a visit from a Firefighter on Wednesday 28th November. Our visitor who told us all about his job and how to keep safe. Mark informed us about how he trained to be firefighter and about what happens when they get a call to help someone. He also reminded the pupils of the importance of having a smoke alarm and checking it each Monday to make sure that it is working.
On Thursday 22nd November we welcomed Catherine's Dad into our class to learn about his job. We learnt so much about the processes involved in bringing a product to Northern Ireland to prepare and sell to costumers. We found it very interesting to find out how important different types of transport are in this process. A great afternoon.
Thank you so much to our visitors so far. We really appreciate you taking the time to visit us.

September 2018
Year 3 pupils have made a great start to the year. Great to see the children settling into their new class and classroom.
We have begun our first topic 'Whatever the Weather'. We have already been learning about the seasons of the year, the water cycle and weather associated with winter. Year 3 recorded the weather we experienced at school for two weeks and were able to discuss and write about what they noticed.
We've been writing too! Year 3 have written about their favourite summer memory, a weather forecast and a weather diary. Some great poets here too! We've written poems about two types of weather! Super ideas!
