Welcome to  the Year 2 Class Page 2022-23

Pupils, parents, carers, siblings and everyone else - welcome to our class page!
Here you will be able to keep up with our day to day learning adventures in Year Two -
newest updates will be at the top of the page, please scroll down for older updates!

SNOW DAY!

Is there anything more exciting than a snow day? We certainly don't think so!

With the pupils all attending school in their cosy winter gear, we were able to make the most of the weather through some exciting learning activities.  Letters and numbers in the snow, snowy science and art, and great teamwork to build a snowman which was much admired by all of the older pupils!

Weighing and Measuring

As the pupils' understanding of basic Numeracy concepts has progressed, we have been able to move on to more complex Numeracy topics, such as weighing and measuring.  The pupils really enjoy these activities as they are practical and there is always lots of time to discuss what we have been learning. Look at those happy faces as everyone makes important discoveries!

New challenges for the New Term!

Following the Christmas break, the pupils came back full of stories and ready to learn!
We have hit the ground running, moving on to more phonics blends, bigger numbers, trickier concepts, a new topic (Peope Who Help Us!) and some ICT challenges.  Looking forward to some great progress and memories being made!

A Warm Winter Treat

The Year Two pupils have been working hard and with interest to learn how to write instructions.   To put their new skills to the test, they worked together to write or sequence some instructions for making Hot Chocolate - and it only seemed right to make the real thing to make sure they were correct! Great work everyone!

Festive Friday Fun!

In Dromara Primary School in December Fridays are very special - they are our FESTIVE FRIDAYS.
On these days the pupils enjoy a range of activities to help them to count down to Christmas - from Craft days, to Games days, and the ever popular Christmas jumper day there is always a lot to look forward to. Here are a few highlights of the fun!

Christmas Craft!

We took some time in December to create some really lovely Christmas craft including special Christmas cards featuring the pupil's photos, keepsake Christmas baubles, Santa Door hangers and these fabulous sparkly antlered reindeer.
Great use of glue, scissors and artistic skill from all of the pupils.

Our Amazing concert!

After weeks of preparation and great excitement, we were delighted to present our amazing show 'A Snowman at Sunset' on the 14th and 15th of December.   The pupils did an amazing job, particularly following a few weeks with illnesses and absense (a different number of snowmen in the line-up for every single rehearsal!)
We are very proud of how confidently they were able to sing, dance, tell jokes and entertain us all. Well done!

Lets keep learning with Numicon!

Having learned the basics of the Numicon patterns and colours, we were able to extend our learning to include number bonds, addition and odd and even numbers. Lots of investigation activities and explaining what we had learned were of course included. Super learning!

Party time!

Party time!
One of the highlights of the year is the Year 1 - 4 Hallowe'en parties.
Organised by our PTA and always a huge hit, the pupils all loved coming along in their coolest costumes to dance and play together!
Great behaviour that made us feel very proud and great fun for everyone!

Hallowe'en fun!

"The bats come out,
the cats come out,
the pumpkins come out too!
The treats come out,
the spooks come out,
its Hallowe'en time: boo!"

In Year Two we like to keep the learning fun and engaging by finding new things to explore or celebrate, and Autumn and Hallowe'en time have brought lots of opportunities for this! Through fun practical activities the pupils have been building their knowledge, physical, social and creative skills.  From haunted house snakes and ladders to develop counting,  manipulating the special spooky playdough and our designing our super creepy spider hats, to pumpkin bowling for an adding challenge, the pupils have joined in with every challenge: and smiled all the way!

Keep on Counting!

We have been thinking all about different representations of numbers in school, using toys, dice, dominoes, making sets and more recently working with Numicon. 'Seeing' numbers in lots of different ways is helpful in enabling the children to make connections between counting, estimating and completing calculations  and our Numicon resource is particularly helpful for this, providing a hands on approach to making connections between numbers.  We've been ordering, sequencing, sorting and investigating and every pupil has been able to display and talk about their understanding.
Great work!

Let's Play!

“Play is our brain’s favorite way of learning.” – Diane Ackerman

The pupils always look foward to our play sessions, and this week was particularly exciting as there were some new Play areas to explore.  With new sand and water toys, construction on the Tuff Spot, 'A squash and a squeeze' story to act out and our 'Vets' role play area there has been fantastic team work, turn taking and learning taking place.

Learning to Measure!

A new skill for the Year Two pupils this week - we have been learning to measure!
The pupils were able to use maths vocabularly to talk about their measuring activities - long, longer, longest, short, shorter, shortest and 'about the same'.  We used our colourful 'can of worms' to complete lots of activities and measured just about everything we could find in the classroom. Great work!

Ready, set ...alphabet!

In addition to learning our phonic sounds through 'say the sound' and 'write the sound' we have also been working on tasks to increase our alphabet letter name knowedge!

These tasks are collaborative and practical and as you can see the pupils were all delighted with their success in completing them!

Sponsored Walk Fun

On Friday 7th October it was SPONSORED WALK DAY!
Every year we look forward to this excellent opportunity to walk, talk and raise some funds for our school.
The sun shone brightly for us, and all of the pupils had a really fun, active time together (with juice and biscuits to finish!)

Thank you to all of our families and friends for supporting our efforts, it is very appreciated!

Our Ssss-super Science Snakes!

Our first World Around Us Topic this year is 'Wild About Animals!' The pupils will be learning lots of interesting facts about Animals and carrying out some exciting Science investigations.
In this investigation the pupils had to use their scissor skills to cut out a spiral snake and then figure out how to make the snake move without touching it! Lots of great ideas and lots of fun using paperclips and magnets to take our snakes for a walk!

Lets get to work!

After a busy few days settling in and catching up on all of the Summer holiday chat, the Year Two pupils were ready to settle into their work and play!  Equipped with lovely new twistables, big smiles and great attitudes, everyone has been trying their best to listen carefully and show their best effort!  A great start to the year!

The Daily Mile

We love to get outside to walk, play and chat together, so the 'Daily Mile' has fast  become a favourite for the Year Two Pupils!  During this time the pupils can talk with their friends or a familiar adult, have lots of fun observing the changing weather and environment around our school and get a great cardio workout!

September!

After a lovely long Summer break, its back to school for the new Year Two pupils!

I am so excited for a year of great work and play and with Diane and Ellen on the team, to helping your special little people grow and learn!

This month we will be learning rules and routines for a happy classroom, revising initial phonics sounds and letter formation, revising numbers to 10 or 20, adding, taking away, and thinking about o'clock times and how to spend and save our pennies! Our World Around Us topic is 'Wild About Animals' and we will be developing lots of motor, social and collaborative skills through Practical activities and Play!
