Say them slowly to write them down or make using magnetic letters. Here are some examples which have -ud -um -ug endings.
I will post more tomorrow.
cud mud bud dud hum mum sum tum dug tug hug jug bug mug rug lug
****It will be necessary to explain what some words mean e.g. dud, cud, lug. This is usually done by showing a picture and by putting the word into a sentence.
****Ask your child to give you a sentence with some of the easier 'u' words. This is good preparation for spelling sentences in Year 2.
e.g. A cow can chew its cud. I can hum a song.
Here is a middle 'u' video. See if you can read some of the words.

Year 1 Pupil Message
Morning everyone, ask Mummy or Daddy to show you the the 'Home' page of our website. Everyone who helps us in school has made a special message for you. See if you can read some keywords and find Lydia, Pamela, Alison and Mrs Price too!
Dear Parents,
You have received my second pack of home learning and this will cover the next 3-4 weeks. It is helpful to establish a good routine with young children so that they know what they will be doing over the course of the day. In school, we call this our 'visual timetable' and we have a simple picture for each task e.g. numbers for numeracy, letters for phonics, an ear for when we listen, books for stories etc. As a parent myself, I realise that every family situation is different , I have outlined a timetable which you can use or adapt to suit your own needs.
9.00 am - Check the Year 1 website and plan the day with your child especially deciding on the creative activity for later. This is the BRIBE in my house!! We talk about 'first' and 'then' in school.
9.15 am - Mental Maths. Follow activities on Foundation Stage Progression.
9.25 am - Numeracy activity from pack. Complete 1/2 pages in workbooks.
9.45 am - Brain Break linked to Numeracy. We usually do some number rhymes/songs which involve actions with our body, hands e.g. Numbers songs 1-10 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I73EDjFOl50
10.00 am - Literacy activity from pack.
10.20 am - Listening time to a short story https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCcmxTZVheAmKX_u7VuSckFQ
10.30am - Break and Snack time.
11.00 - Numeracy Topic Work from pack - Measures booklet/Pattern work. Complete 1 page.
11.20 - P.E. with Joe Wicks. 30 minute session which can be accessed at any time of the day.
11.50 am - Phonics Work. Concentrate on the new sound(s) for the week. Watch my suggested programmes on 'Alphablocks', 'Get Squiggling', or practice writing the letter, play phonics ICT games.
12.10 pm - Lunch time and outdoor play.
1.00pm - World Around Us. Complete 1 page in 'Spring' booklet 2 times a week and please complete the TOPIC pinned to the inside classroom in Mini Mash.
1.20 pm - Creative time/ICT time e.g. Art, craft making, board games, jigsaws, music, Mini Mash (The outside classroom, literacy, numeracy and simple city areas to explore), Teach your Monster to Read website, Topmarks website games.
1.50 pm - Story time to finish the day .
2.00 pm - Jobs to help around the house e.g. make your bed, walk the dog with mum, tidy your toys.
Please remember lots of incidental learning takes place when engaging in practical tasks around the house or talking together when out for a walk e.g. read numbers on car number plates and house numbers, look for signs of Spring when outside, count how many steps it takes to walk around the house?

Year 1 Pupil Message
Good morning boys and girls! Today is Monday and it's back to doing some school work . I have made a 'tray' for everyone in Mini Mash to save your art work into. There is also the topic of EASTER to do which is at the top of the inside classroom in Mini Mash . This has some fun jigsaws, pairs games and art activities for you to do this week. Our sounds this week are 'qu' and 'x' and that will be the whole alphabet completed!! I hope you will watch our programmes on 'Get Squiggling' and 'Alphablocks' this week to help you and don't forget to have a walk around your house to find some things beginning with these sounds.
I miss you all.

Activities on the Year 1 class page are designed to supplement the work in the home packs.
Please complete these during this week.......
- Get Squiggling literacy programme on both the 'q' and 'x' letters. Go to youtube get squiggling letter x
- Alphablocks phonics programme for both the 'qu' and 'x' sounds. Go to youtube alphablocks letter x and then letter q. Also, the 'Alphablocks Q needs U song' is good for understanding why these letters always go together.
- Please practice writing the lower case 'x' and 'qu' letters. I have included a letter formation sheet in the home pack for your reference.
- The writing rhyme for 'x' is 'down the arm and leg and then down the other side'.
- The writing rhyme for 'qu' is 'round the queen's head, up to her crown, down her hair and flick.........down and under the umbrella, up to the top, down to the puddle and flick'. Pictures for these sounds are located in the handwriting pages in the new home pack.
- Purple Mash - Mini Mash - the inside classroom now has a topic box EASTER which is 'pinned' at the top corner. Click on the picture of Easter eggs to access the activities. I will be changing this every week. Pupils can now save any work into a tray and give their pictures a title.
Happy Easter !
Year 1 Pupil Message
Good evening everyone! I hope you are looking forward to getting some chocolate treats over the holidays. I am going to have an 'egg hunt' in my garden for Daniel and James on Sunday, maybe you could do one too? Please continue with your Mini Mash egg pictures and the Jigsaws and Pairs games at the table area. Thank you for all the your great photos in our home learning gallery. Keep sending them in so we can see each other.
Take care and don't eat too much chocolate!

- Well done for all the home schooling and completion of work over the last two weeks. Take a break over the Easter holidays and take time, if possible to do more family style activities...play a board game, make rice krispie buns, have a chocolate egg hunt , watch a family movie, have a jigsaw afternoon, make playdough and one of our favourites is to build a den inside.
- A really good free website for phonics practice over the holidays is 'Teach Your Monster to Read'.
- Thank you for all the photos to date for our home learning gallery. Please send photos to the school email address. Many thanks and happy Easter!

People who help us
We had a visit from David, a paramedic who came into our class to tell us about his job in the community. David showed us a range of resources that he uses every day from bandages, a neck brace, a stretcher and even a blanket that looked like tinfoil! Pupils had great fun trying everything on and many questions had to be answered during our discussion.

Cress growing
In connection with our topic of 'water', we planted cress seeds and watered them every day. We made faces for the front of our pots and the cress would be the hair. Year 1 pupils loved the green hair!!

Quality Time
In December we went to Quality Time in Banbridge. On arrival, we were welcomed by Natasha, the owner and QT elf on the shelf who caused a SNOW STORM! We split up into two groups, with Group 1 heading straight into the playzone and Group 2 into a 'messy play workshop'.
The playzone was Christmas themed and pupils had a fabulous time wrapping presents, cooking Christmas dinner, dressing up as Santa, Mrs Claus and elves. We bought presents from the shop, decorated Christmas trees, completed Christmas jigsaws, built a Christmas gingerbread house ... the list really was endless!
The messy play workshop involved:
- making reindeer food
- icing Christmas biscuits
- water/glitter play making Christmas elf soup
- making snowmen
- creating Christmas trees from green playdough and then decorating them
- making hot chocolate
- investigating Oobleck and the ice brussel sprouts!!
In between all of this, we also had time for a well deserved healthy snack of pancakes, grapes, cheese, breadsticks, rice cakes and milk or water to drink.
We were certainly all very busy indeed and had a marvelous educational trip with lots of FUN!

Happy Birthday Dromara!
This year we were celebrating our school's 80th anniversary. The pupils all dressed up for the occasion with an 80's style disco in the morning, lots of cake and a special commemorative anniversary mug was given to each pupil as a keepsake of the event.

A Miracle in Town!
I hope everyone really loved watching our Christmas musical 'A Miracle in Town' in the Year 1 - 3 concert. The children were all fantastic and I was very proud of them. We had just over 4 weeks to put it all together ... acting on stage, learning songs and dance moves ... not to mention the costumes, the face painting and serious amounts of glitter everywhere! Look at our photographs of the angels, stars, shepherds, camels, kings, narrators and not forgetting Mary, Joseph and our donkey.

Bear Hunt
We finally finished our Bears topic with our bear hunt (we had to wait for quite a few days until the rain stopped!) We donned our bear ears and hunted high and low for teddy bears around the school grounds. It is safe to say that we expertly managed to recover all our bears with a little help from Mr Armstrong and Alison!

Bear Sorting
We had a lot of fun sorting out teddy bears in the hall. We sorted for large/medium/small bears, bears wearing clothes/no clothes and brown bears/not brown bears.
The biggest bear belonged to Vanessa and the smallest bear belonged to Emily. We acted out the story 'We're going on a bear hunt' by Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury with plenty of actions and movements. Finally, we finished our sorting morning with a teddy toss - Mrs Price and Lydia had to run for cover as 29 bears went flying towards them! Caidan's went the furthest.

Practical Numeracy
Every week we have several sessions of practical numeracy. Pupils rotate around the planned activities over the course of 2 weeks. We created our own colour patterns, counted and made sets of objects and investigated which furniture will go with each of the three bears.
