Take a look at the sport's day photos. Monday 3rd June Our Year 6 class and Year 6 from St Michael's Primary School went on a 'shared education ' visit to the Giant's Causeway and Portrush. We all had a great time from learning about the Irish myths connected to the Causeway to riding on the 'Big Dipper' in Barry's. Monday 13th May 'The Amazing Journey' visit Year 6. We learnt all about the books of the Bible. Friday 10th May Construction time in Y6. Thursday 9th May Key stage 2 dance the night away at the 'PTA' disco. Friday 3rd May The children had a great time- climbing in and out of the planes and helicopters. This trip really brings our topic to life. Great place to visit- the guides are experts! I love to see the progress made from year to year on the new planes the specialists from the Aviation Society are working on. Some great photos!! Wednesday 1st May Year 6 had a visit from Mr. Ernie Cromie from 'The Ulster Aviation Society.' Ernie is an expert on the history of flight- he had a question and answer session with the class in preparation for their visit on Friday 3rd May. Thank-you Ernie for your time- excellent as usual! |

Tuesday 26th March
As part of 'Shared Education' our Year 6 class and the Year 6 from St Michael's Primary School visited the National Stadium at Windsor Park. We had an enjoyable morning reliving some of Northern Ireland's great goals and learning about their outstanding players. We saw some outstanding players ourselves when the children had a chance to take penalty kicks against a computerised goalie- tricky enough. Zara from St Michael's was awesome!
We visited all parts of the stadium including the dressing room, the media room, the stands, the tunnel and of course the dugout at pitch side. Our two guides were very knowledgeable and the children asked many questions. I learnt that you had to have a personal invitation from the IFA to go into the 'George Best Lounge' and the seats outside the lounge were lovely, comfortable, padded ones!
All in all it was a very good trip and is well worth a visit. The only thing missing was a shop with affordable souvenirs- but they are working on that one.
Many thanks to Kris Lindsay for offering us the chance to visit.

Wednesday 6th March
Rich Black (Dad of Dan, in Year 7) who was a pilot for 'Aer Lingus' visited our class to help us with our 'Flight' topic. Rich told the children everything they needed to know about the job of a pilot. On his powerpoint he also showed the children how pilots take off and land a plane. The children asked Rich lots of questions and also gave good answers to the questions he asked them. I would like to thank Rich, once again, for giving of his time to help Year 6 (so informative, as usual). Also, thanks so much for all the gliders he brought for the children.

Friday 1st February
'Number Day'. Once again we held number day in the school for the charity 'NSPCC'. The children dressed up in onesies or tops with numbers on them. Throughout the day Year 6 completed a lot of maths- 'Ken Ken', 'Counting like an Egyptian', 'Who Wants to be a Mathionaire', with Year 5, 'Number Tricks' and 'Number PE'. You can see photos of 'Who wants to be a Mathionaire' on the homepage. On our class page are pictures of the three mixed teams of Year 5 and 6s. Needless to say all pupils were involved in answering the questions.

16th January
On 16th January we had a visit from the 'Waste Education Vehicle'. Year 6 made wallets from tetra packs not 'milk cartons'! It was an interesting experience- the children learnt a lot about recycling and what can be made from different waste items. They also had a lot of fun making their wallets.

JanuaryOn Friday 11th January 2019 Year 6 visited 'The Ulster Museum' in connection with their Egyptian topic.
Mrs Baird, was our lecturer and she began talking about the geography of Egypt and how influential the River Nile was. She then talked about 'Takabuti' the mummy in the museum, given as a gift by Thomas Gregg, over 180 years ago. The next topic was mummification and I was so proud of year 6 - they answered the questions like experts! Mrs Baird talked to the children about 'Canopic Jars' and about which parts of the body went into which jar. Happi the baboon held the lungs, the jackal held the stomach, the bird held the intestines and the jar with the human head held the liver. Next came the ancient artefacts and the children were allowed to handle all of the following: -Lid of canopic jar -Bandage of mummy -Amulets -Necklace -Stones for make up -Wooden comb -Papyrus -Wooden pillow -Spices - Frankincense, myrrh The children were amazing - careful and respectful. They answered every question correctly and asked Mrs Baird intelligent questions - she was very impressed! |

November/December
After the excitement of Halloween we returned to school to finish our 'Human Body' topic and begin 'The Ancient Egyptians.' November was a month of hard work and preparation for all the events to come in December.
The 1st December brought the switch on of the Christmas Tree in the village and some members of our class assisted Mrs Irvine with beautiful singing to entertain the Mayor of Lisburn, Uel Mackin, family and friends. We were joined again by the Year 6 from St. Michael's Primary School for shared education on 4th December. We worked with Izak 9 on multiples and factors- it was fun! On 11th December we had a special visit from an Ulster Rugby player- Marcell Coetzee. He answered many questions from the children, posed for photos and signed autographs- a genuinely lovely guy. In connection with our 'Egyptian Topic' we had a visit from David Palmer on 17th December. David and Victoria dressed in 'galabiyas' and David told the children about all his adventures whilst holidaying in Egypt. It gave the children an opportunity to see what modern day Egypt was like as well as seeing David's photos of the pyramids, ancient temples and many other ancient artefacts. As usual, it was very interesting and I would like to thank David for his time and expertise. I can't believe Term 1 is over and I would like to thank all Year 6 parents for the lovely Christmas presents. Year 6 will visit the Ulster Museum in January for a lecture on Ancient Egypt. Watch out for the photos! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! |
October
Wednesday 24th October
To start the day the children took part in 'Glow Fitness'. This was all about keeping fit but in a fun way with luminous paints and vests, great music and ultra violet lighting. Thank-you Lisburn city council for the experience.

After break we had a visit from Nurse Brendan Bradley who was going to help us with our human body topic . As usual Brendan was a big hit with the children teaching them new facts about the human body, revising old ones and introducing the children to CPR and the recovery position. I think Victoria Bennett enjoyed dressing up as much as the children! The children have written Brendan 'Thank-you' letters which will be delivered to him in November.
Many thanks Brendan - as usual you did a first class job!

On Tuesday 9th October Year 6 children from St.Michael's Primary School visited our class for our first 'Shared Education' lesson.
We were working with IZAK 9 which is a resource used for teaching maths. Firstly, the children worked together, in groups to get IZAK 9 back into its box in the correct order. This proved difficult at first but then the penny dropped - working as a team was the most important factor! Each group were given a wall of nine cubes from IZAK 9 and set mathematical problems to solve connected to this wall. As you can see from the photos the children were fully engaged in their work.
We look forward to visiting Year 6 in St.Michaels after half term for IZAK 9 part 2!

SeptemberLook at all the hard working pupils. Year 6 is a busy year in the educational life of your child.
During September there will be a settling in period when we shall be getting to know each other. 'The Human Body' will be our topic and as with all topic work I shall be calling for help from parents who perhaps have a particular interest in, or work within a connected area. The remaining topics will be- 'Ancient Egypt', 'Flight and Transport', 'St Patrick and Irish Myths and Legends', 'China' and if time permits 'Water'. So if you feel you can help in any way please let me know. I shall be inviting Nurse Brendan Bradley in to help with our 'Human Body' topic- look out for the photos. He is the dad of Erin Bradley in Year 7. I would also encourage you to read the curriculum information for Year 6 and I hope this proves useful. Let's all work together to make this year a fantastic learning experience for your child! Many thanks, Mrs Milligan. |
