World Book Day AGAIN!
Year 1 pupils celebrated World Book Day for the second time on Wednesday 27th March. We dressed up as our favourite book characters for the day. Staff dressed up too, as black cats! Each year group participated in our parade and danced on the stage to all the latest dance moves. Year 3 pupils were our 'reading buddies' and read to us in the afternoon. Look at our photographs -

Shapes everywhere!
We had a 'shape hunt' around our school and surrounding grounds. Year 1's were brilliant at finding shapes on our walk. Back in the classroom, some wonderful 2D shape creations were made, even the numberblocks characters featured.

Yoga
Most Year 1 pupils participated in a 4 week yoga course. The children loved trying out new balances and stretches and remembering their names, e.g. bunny ears, the lion and the mountain. The sessions did promote relaxation and helped to build self-esteem and confidence. Thank you Julie! |
Mr Hullaballoo
Pre-school gave Years 1 and 2 the opportunity to see Mr Hullaballoo and his nursery rhyme show on Monday 18th March. The traditional stories of 'The Three Little Pigs' and 'Jack and the Beanstalk' were acted out with Kurtis from Year 1 being the cow. We had a fabulous morning!

Number Day
Year 1 actually participated in 2 special number day sessions. We teamed up with the morning Pre-school children to engage in number activities and then after lunch, we linked up again with Pre-school afternoon children and participated in another range of number tasks. Year 1's were all dressed up in our number tops and onesies - have a look at the fun we had!

Recycling in Year 1
The 'Waste Education Van' came to school and Year 1 learnt all about the materials that we should be recycling. Great fun was had examining a lizard made from recycling tinfoil and a 'coke can hat' caused a lot of excitement! We made a newspaper pot, filled it with compost and planted cress seeds - we really were very busy indeed!

Aladdin
On Thursday 10th January, the whole school had a fantastic treat of watching the pantomime of Aladdin in our hall. We sang along to dance hits, loved all the fabulous costumes and scenery changes and even Mrs Reain and Mr Bovis had a teacher dance competition! We had a super afternoon! |

Quality Time Trip
Look at the photographs from our trip to Quality Time in Banbridge and read about how our trip went …
On Thursday 20th December, 16 Year 1's and 3 adults boarded the bus, with Ernie our driver, for the morning ahead. Everyone (especially the adults!) were delighted to be off school and the short journey to Banbridge flew by with lots of chat and the usual chant, "Are we nearly there yet?".
Quality Time opened in January 2018 and has a different play related theme every month. On arrival, we were given a warm welcome by Natasha, the owner and manageress of Quality Time. We went straight into the playzone which was Christmas themed and had a fabulous time wrapping presents, cooking Christmas dinner, dressing up as Santa, Mrs Claus and elves. We bought presents from the Christmas shop, decorated Christmas trees, completed Christmas jigsaws, built a Christmas gingerbread house - the list really was endless!
Following this we had a well deserved healthy snack of pancakes, grapes, breadsticks, rice cakes, cheese and orange. With milk/water to drink and a not so healthy chocolate log cake to finish off it was not surprising that Mrs Price has never seen food vanish so quickly.
Our next activity was a messy play workshop which involved:
- painting Christmas decorations
- making hot chocolate
- making reindeer food
- icing biscuits
- creating Christmas trees from green playdough and decorating
- water play with Christmas toys
- glitter play cake mixing
- play with snowmen and fake snow.
We were certainly all very busy indeed!
The highlight, however, came when it was time to board our bus back home as a special visitor surprised us - the ELF on the shelf! And to top it off, it started to snow and Year 1 got to dance in the snow with the Elf.
Many thanks to Pamela and Caitlin for all their help and good humour throughout the day. We all had a marvellous educational trip and we all had LOTS OF FUN!

Halloween Party
The Year 1 and 2 boys and girls joined together for a fun-filled evening in the hall. The costumes were fantastic with even Mrs Price, Miss Briggs and Mr Armstrong dressing up for the occasion! Here are some happy and scary images from the night ....

Bear Hunting!
After reading 'We're going on a bear hunt' story by Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury, we donned our bear ears and hunted high and low for teddy bears around the school grounds. It is safe to say that the story was well and truly re-enacted with Charlie getting lost in the snow storm and James pretending to get stuck in the mud. The Year 1 pupils followed instructions expertly in order to recover all our bears.

Teddy Bears' Picnic
In connection with our 'Bears' topic, we had to 'retell a story' to the bears before we had our morning snack - this picnic was by invitation only and at one stage it looked like no adults were being invited.

Measuring
We had to measure our bears using coloured cubes. Then we counted the cubes to see who had the most cubes and thus the biggest bears. Our touch counting really improved!

Bear Sorting
We had lots of fun 'sorting' our teddy bears in the hall. Mrs Price made everyone (including Pamela), sort for large/medium/small bears, bears wearing clothes and no clothes and we had to sort for brown bears and not brown bears! The biggest bear belonged to James Price and the smallest bear belonged to Ella.
We finished our 'sorting' morning with a teddy toss to see which bear would go the furthest. Mrs Price and Pamela had to run for cover as 16 bears went flying in the school hall!

Practical Numeracy
Every week in Year 1 we have several sessions of practical numeracy. The pupils rotate around the planned activities over the course of a week. We created our own patterns using 2 colours using pegs and beads. Some of us are now ready for the 3 colour pattern challenge! Lots of sorting tasks, counting objects and making sets have all been carried out.
