.....to the Year 3 Class Page

21st June 2017
Today Year 3 took our school Assembly. We shared some of the activities that we've done as part of our class topic 'Let's Celebrate'.  Well done to all the boys and girls!

20th June 2017
On Tuesday 20th June Year 3 left school at 9:20am and travelled by bus to W5.   When we arrived at W5 we had some time to have our break and relax before our adventure would begin!

We began our visit with some time in the Discovery area where pupils had some time to enjoy the activities.  Pupils had the opportunity to use and learn about pulleys, levers, magnets, health and fitness, nature, space, air and water through play.  There were also light, microscope, colour, senses, sound and music, engineering, animation, punctuation and weather exhibits.

Next we went up to Level 5 to the workshop rooms to learn about ‘Toying with Forces’.  Pupils used a variety of toys and magnets to explore the effects of pushes and pulls. These activities followed on from our STEM activities completed in school. The children also made their own fridge magnet to take back to school for further investigations.

After lunch we went to the Climbit area. Climbit is described as being a huge multi-storey climbing structure which is a cross between a maze and a jungle gym! The pupils were able to climb up the oval platforms to almost the height of the W5 building! A great achievement! Then time to head back to school!

June 2017
During 12th June to 16th June Year 3 held a Science Week. We had lots of fun learning about forces, creating models and using our thinking skills too! The children did lots of brilliant Science at home too and brought their projects into school to show the class.

June 2017
This month we have been using Photo Story 3 to create movies about our Activity Based Learning construction area. We took photographs of some pupils using Octons and sequenced them. We added text and voice to the pictures and created a movie with music. Here are the photos we used - we began with them in the wrong order as below! We had great fun being 'Movie Makers'!

May 2017
We've been completing a series of STEM lessons (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). We've focused our lessons on Movement and Energy and will follow this up with a class trip to W5 in June. During the trip we plan to enjoy a workshop called 'Toying with Forces'.

The week we've been making rockets using a drinking bottle, an art straw, a drinking straw and blu tack. We enjoyed the challenge! We had a competition to see whose rocket could fly the furthest. 3, 2, 1 blast off!!!!

We've had a great time learning about People From the Past. Time to look back during this historical topic  We have been researching people who made a difference and who remain famous today because of how they impacted others.

Pupils completed a 'Finding Out Homework' at the beginning of the topic and enjoyed sharing their research with their peers. We were able to research the lives of people from the past using various sources and record using profiles and write informative stories. Here are some of the people we researched:

World Book Day fun ......
On Tuesday 28th February we made pancakes to celebrate Pancake Tuesday. We discussed the purpose of Pancake Tuesday, the ingredients used and the cooking process.
On Friday 24th February we welcomed Kacia's Mum, Kyla, and her colleague, Kieran, to Year 3. They work for Hovis and came to tell us how bread is made. We really enjoyed their visit and learnt so much about the process from the grain being harvested to the loaf of bread we buy at the shop. Here are some pictures from their visit.

Thank you so much for visiting us!

Do you think you can recognise crisp flavours using only your sense of taste?  We did! So Mrs Irvine challenged us to taste and recognise some flavours of crisps!
Year 3 investigating and sorting dominoes using a Carroll Diagram .....
Feb 2017
Today we tasted a variety of foods from around the world as part of our food topic. Year 3 had the opportunity to try spring rolls, bagels, croissants, brioche, bhajis, swiss cheese and pizza. Lots of great tasting and lovely smells in our classroom today!
Number Day
10th February 2017
Today we took part in Number Day. We'd great fun doing a Number Day Treasure Hunt, enjoying 'Musical Numbers' with Year 2 and being contestants in 'Who Wants to be a Mathionaire' with Year 4.

Jan / Feb 2017
We're enjoying our topic 'Food, Glorious Food'.  During this topic we plan to:
  • complete some food investigations.
  • discuss and taste foods from around the world.
  • learn about plants and meat available locally.
  • learn about the nutrients found in foods.
  • find out about the foods we eat and how they are grown.
  • find out about changes in shopping and cooking from 1900’s to today.

During World Around Us we've investigated changes in foods when left uncovered. The children were able to described their observations and record the information in their World Around Us books. More recently we have observed changes to bread when stored in different ways. This resulted in discussion about their own lunch boxes. The pupils acknowledged the sensible choices their parents have made to keep their lunch fresh! Great conversations!

Dec 2016
On Monday 19th December Year 3 left school at 9:45am and travelled by bus to Lisburn Police Station.

We began our visit by going to the briefing room to learn about the Police Station. Then we were given a tour of the Station which began with an opportunity to visit the CCTV Room. We really enjoyed watching the activities in Lisburn and neighbouring villages. Next we went out to the car park where the pupils enjoyed seeing the police vehicles and learnt about when they are used.

After this, we returned to the briefing room where we enjoyed our break and learnt more about the role of a Police Officer. The pupils had an opportunity to see the various types of uniform worn by the Police Officers and when they are required.

We had a fabulous day at the Lisburn Police Station and are very grateful to those who organised the visit for us.
Nov / Dec 2016
Year 3 pupils are participating well in our new topic, Jobs and Transport'.
During this topic we will be finding out about jobs people do today and in the past, meeting and interviewing people with a variety of careers, learning how people in the past travelled from place to place and investigating push and pull forces.

On Thursday 24th November we welcomed the Evo Soccer coaches into our classroom to tell us about their career. The Evo coaches come to our school every Thursday to teach pupils in our school how to play football. Lots of the pupils in our class really enjoy football and are interested in learning how to be a coach. We prepared some questions for the coaches and enjoyed learning about their job.

Thanks Evo!

On Tuesday 29th November we were able to learn about the career of a Vet. Elif's Mum came to tell us about her job. She brought lots of interesting items with her and showed us how a Vet would use them. She told us about why she wanted to be a Vet and answered our questions.

Thank you so much for a great morning learning about your job!

We are continuing to enjoy our Mile Walk and enjoying the good weather. We walk quite quickly so the camera had difficulty capturing photos of us!
Oct 2016
Year 3 have been enjoying Activity Based Learning tasks linked to our topic 'Whatever the Weather'. The children have been creating weather forecasts, making clothes suitable for the four seasons, creating bar charts using data we've collected, making waterproof coats using various materials and using construction materials to make buildings and vehicles.

Oct 2016
Year 3 have been using dominoes and counters to develop their understanding of counting and addition. They have been developing their understanding mental strategies used to add and subtract and the structure of numbers.
