School Trip to the Ark Farm
Look at the photographs from our trip to the Ark Farm in Newtownards and read about how our day trip went!
When the school bell rang, everyone in Dromara Primary went inside to begin their work - apart from 29 very excited Year 1’s and 3 adults who were boarding Danny’s bus for their visit to the Ark Farm. The journey to Newtownards flew by with the children anticipating all of the different animals they would see and maybe even feed!
On arrival, we were given a warm welcome by Davy, our guide for the day. We went inside to the restaurant area and ate our break in record time, before listening to the farm rules. Then it was time to see the animals! Our first stop was to visit Davina the pig. We found out that pigs are actually very clean animals, which surprised more than just the children! The pigs were also not pink, but black, light brown and ginger!! After feeding a lamb, Davy also introduced us to some kittens (baby rabbits).
The farmyard came next where we were introduced to the cows and their calves. The highland cows didn’t seem too interested by our arrival as they continued to lie in the straw, paying us no attention! We also saw some alpacas and found out that they come the whole way from Peru. Great excitement was had when we discovered some real reindeer with antlers. Their names were Dancer, Prancer and Rudolph! There was also a baby reindeer which had not yet been named - we came up with plenty of suggestions!
Next, we visited the chicks which we all got to hold. This was great fun! We even got to bring an egg back to Dromara which one of the chicks had hatched from the night before our arrival. Davy explained to us that the chicks were under a red light to keep them warm as they don’t have their mummy hen with them.
After this, we met several Shetland ponies and examined the black cross on the donkey’s back. Greedy goats were very keen to greet us, standing up as we went past.
We also visited the Creepy Crawley Loft - this had lots of animals from all over the world such as snakes and lizards. Thanks to some persuasion from Davy, some pupils got the opportunity to hold a large tarantula and have a snake around their neck! (Mrs Price and Lou-Ann politely declined this opportunity). We then made our way down the steep hill to the duck pond where we saw lots of ducks, black and white swans and some noisy geese!
Next it was time to wash our hands and go for lunch. Unfortunately, due to the rain the day before, the ground was wet so we ate our lunch inside. Our last visits of the day were to the outdoor play area where we got to use the slides, swings, see-saw and the roundabout and we also had great fun on the rainbow coloured kangaroo jumper!!!
Finally it was time to go home. The journey was filled with lots of stories about our favourite animals along with several dozing eyes! We had a marvellous educational trip and we all had lots of fun!

Year 1 Assembly
The boys and girls from Year 1 helped Mrs Price to take assembly on Wednesday 29th March. Everyone had an important part to play as each pupil had their own speaking role and a musical instrument to play. Year 1's explained the many special uses of water, e.g. we use water for drinking, washing, travelling on. We spoke about our floating and sinking observations, e.g. metal is heavy and it sinks, wood floats in the water, and we also read some bathtime stories aloud to pupils in Years 2 - 7. We finished our class assembly with a fantastic musical number called 'Please Mr Noah'. Mrs Price had all the Year 1's dressed up as animals - we had zebras, lions, monkeys, crocodiles and even rabbits on board Noah's Ark. Everyone had an instrument to play and also had to help Mrs Price with all the words of the story. What an enjoyable morning we had. WELL DONE YEAR 1! |

World Book Day
On Wednesday 8th March we celebrated World Book Day in school by dressing up as our favourite book characters for the day. All the staff were dress up too, as 'Where's Wally?' . Each year group participated in a parade in our school hall and got their photograph taken both individually and with their class. Year 1 also joined up with Pre-School pupils and Mrs Price had storytime with 48 children. Look at our photographs -

Number Day
On Friday 10th February we celebrated 'Number Day' by either wearing a onesie or a t-shirt with numbers on it. Year 1 pupils went to the school hall and participated in 8 different workstations, all related to 'numbers'. We all had a lot of fun learning about numbers for the whole day - even our P.E. was number related!!

All About Me
This will be our second topic and Year 1 will be learning about their bodies, talking about their families and finding out about our 5 senses. We will have a hospital set up in the imaginative play corner so don't panic when you hear conversations about broken bones and x-rays!

Bear Hunt
To complete our 'Bears' topic we had a bear hunt around the school grounds. We donned our bear ears and hunted high and low for teddy bears and re-enacted our "We're going on a bear hunt" story by Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury.

BEARS
Our first topic in the school year is 'Bears'. We will be learning all about polar bears, grizzly bears, koala bears and panda bears! Where they live, what they look like, what they eat, how they move will all be discussed. Lots of our literacy and numeracy activities will be linked to bears.

Bear Sorting
We had great fun sorting our teddy bears in the hall. We sorted for large/medium/small bears and all the brown bears/not brown bears and bears wearing clothes/no clothes.
The biggest bears belonged to Alexander and Daniel and the smallest bears belonged to Zoe, Maddison and Jaime.
We finished our sorting activity with a teddy toss - Mrs Price and Lou-ann had to run for cover as the bears went flying through the air!

Practical Numeracy
We do practical numeracy every week in Year 1. In September we were making colour patterns, making sets of 0 - 5 objects, sorting sets for different criteria and not forgetting 'size' activities linked to Daddy bear, Mummy bear and Baby bear! We had a lot of fun!
